Loved checking out this farmer's market on a dreary Saturday a couple weekends ago in Amsterdam!…read more Located in the Jordaan neighborhood, this market has a history of being located in this public square since 1623, when it was renamed after the newly built Noorderkerk, a church which still stands today. Its prior name was Prisenmarkt (named after Prinsengracht (Prince canal)). The earliest version of the market sold everything from pottery, textiles, household items, second-hand goods and pigeons. There's a detailed accounting of this market's history on their website. The current iteration of the market consists of 1) a farmer's market with many local and artisanal producers of farm produce, meats and dairy, baked goods, etc. and 2) a "general goods" market which consists of stands selling housewares, art, vintage clothing and accessories, antiques, textiles and household furnishings, and more. The former is held on Saturdays 9-4pm, the latter on Saturdays same time as the farmers market and Mondays 9-2pm. From where I was walking around, it looked like about three dozen vendors with stands of varied sizes gathered here to sell on a Saturday morning. I also arrived around 9:30am, so there were still vendors setting up too. What a bustling atmosphere and certainly lots of locals doing some weekend food shopping--saw plenty of veggies, fruit, bread, placed directly in bicycle crates (on the front or back of this popular transportation method Amsterdam is well-known for) and biked away. So many yummy looking items! It made me wish I had a kitchen there so I could buy and prepare food from this market. The grill in the middle was really good, as was the noodle stall. We bought cheese and bread and wine. Fun to people watch, snack, and enjoy a couple hours on the weekend. Recommended.

What a great market!…read more I usually go to the Albert Cuyp for normal shopping, as it is closer to my house, and bigger. But last Saturday, when I ended up there rather by coincidence, I remembered why I passed by there almost every week back when I used to live in Oud Zuid. Thus, I have decided to do my best to visit next week again. The market is small, but very 'gezellig'. It's quite cute actually. It has a lot of different things - flowers, burgers, wine, meats, vegetables, cheese. I also got a homemade spicy sun-dried tomato mayonnaise. It was a bit pricey at 6,95 euros, but it is amazing! Perfect also for summer dishes, I paired it with cod cheeks on little gem salad and onion-parsley-tomato salsa. Delicious! But indeed, the price is a little shocking, especially if 3 stalls further you can buy a bottle of rose for the same price (even a bit less, actually). Also, my friend and I got a burger and enjoyed it in the sun; I recommend :) There is not a lot of place to sit, but if you can snag a spot at the shared tables, it is really great. Anyways - loving it - and I will be back for sure.

The restaurant at the entrance was too busy for us to eat at but it was perfect to slup in and use the bathrooms because we only saw porto toilets at the PureMRKT. The market had a good variety of food vendors and knick knack vendors. I sampled and ate a great lunch. I bought some fresh ground chili Infused peanut butter that was weirdly good. Small market but fun to get outside and shop local.

On the first what happened to be a warm day, it was +21 C on Sunday afternoon we found ourselves wandering through the stalls of the market. There are so many vendors and so much food to choose from. Wine merchants and rotisserie chicken, amazing Spanish sausages and jamon, sheep milk cheese and oysters. There are some merchants that sell some trinkets and clothing, but not a lot. We had a picnic blanket with us, and indulged on cheese and cured meats and wine of course! The market got a bit crowded but if you are relaxed and have nowhere to be this is a perfect lazy Sunday activity. Plus side - you don't have to cook a dinner :) Majority of the merchants accept PIN cards, but a few were only accepting cash. Bring a water bottle with you, there are water fountains you can refill it with. And don't forget sunblock and sunglasses. For the kids, there is a big playground area behind the market and for the fancy outing, there is a mini-golf course too.

Are cookies the first thing you think about when you think of an organic grocery store? No? Not for…read moreme either, until I was shopping at de bio specialist. Sure, they may not want to be known for their cookies, but OMG, their cookies are amazing. I'm talking about the ones near the register. They had some samples out, the husband and I tried a piece, and we ended up buying two. Chewy, amazing, oatmeal raisin cookies. For that alone, go here! Now, beyond cookies, this is an organic shop that is really top notch. They pack a lot into a little store, and I don't have trouble finding things. It's like they actually think about it and designed the store for ease of use (novel concept, I know!). The brands they stock here are fantastic. They sell about 6 types of lentils, a great selection of fresh produce (some interesting, non-traditional veggies, too!), herbs, spices, almond milk, snacks to go, bread, coconut milk and what seems like almost every type of 'super food' out there. Need nuts, goji berries, red quinoa, black quinoa, white chia seeds? Look no further. If you want it and its organic I bet this place has it. And that is a lot more than I can say for some of the bigger shops like Marqt or Eko Plaza. And....that is not all.....wait for it....wait for it...wait for it.....They are open late. What?! Open late? Like, how late? Like past 9pm on a weekday late? Yes. Yes, you heard me. This store is open late enough for you to go to work, go to the gym and then go grocery shopping. That is a minor miracle in Amsterdam. Also, the people that work here are really friendly. All in all, a very good addition to the 'hood. And they are open late!
