We had the private museum tour (well worth it to learn the history behind all the artifacts and the mansion). We did a paranormal investigation night with the folks from Haunted Night Experience and the Wraith Chasers and serval other professional paranormal investigators. Then, Dinner with a ghost our last night. It was one of the best experiences of my life. (I would drive the 17 hours for that dinner...YUM!). Lots of amazing paranormal activity was experienced and the pros were so awesome in showing us what they do, how they investigate, how they separate the electrical and radio interference from the actual activity and why they do what they do. We drove from central TX to VA for this event and it was well worth it. Even just visiting the museum is worth the stop if you are ever in the area of Wytheville, VA. It's a cute little town too.

We pass it every other year on our Ohio/Pennsylvania vacations, and we always joke about visiting. This year we decided to give it go. We were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed Wolf Creek. The staff is super friendly and our tour guide was exceptionally educated on the site, and you could easily tell that she enjoyed her job. This is a fun and relatively inexpensive way to spend 2 to 3 hours and learn fascinating Native American history

Nestled in the scenic mountains of southwest Virginia just off Interstate 81, the little town of Wytheville is a treasure trove of history of early America. Founded in the 1790's, Wytheville was a popular town for colonial tourists wanting to escape the summer heat of the deep South, the altitude providing cooler pleasant summers. There are plenty of winding mountain roads for scenic drives and panoramic views. Wytheville Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places, as are many of the beautiful old buildings and churches in town. Edith Bolling Wilson, Woodrow Wilson's first lady was born in Wytheville. Stephen Austin, the "father of Texas" was born in Wythe County. A team of volunteers at the research center/library/museum is eager to help you. The managers say their only "problem" is that everyone who volunteers there loves the place and they are often found standing on the doorstep when it opens, whether or not it's their day to work. Biographies, research on the Civil and Revolutionary Wars, maps, old photographs and information on First Families of Virginia are all part of their library. Selected literature can be purchased online at their website for those who need in-depth detail, including wills, birth, death and marriage records. There is even a family recipe book. Local historians and genealogy enthusiasts have seized the opportunity to preserve the history of the early days and to share it with all visitors, some of whom have traveled thousands of miles to make their inquiries. 800 visitors and counting this year alone ! Davis has 45 acres of vines - which is actually a huge planting. They seem to specialize in Chambourcin and other hybrid grapes, like Steuben, Marshal Foch, as well as some Pinot Noir (which grows decently in the area) and Chardonnay. Prices were very reasonable, although they tended to serve sweet and semi sweet styles, which isn't my thing The wine was OK, but I LOVED the distillery. I had a very brief, off-the-cuff tour, followed by a tasting. The maple bourbon was excellent and lives up to its name (I bought a bottle). But I also liked their moonshines, especially the apple. The 'heritage' bourbon was spicy, which was interesting but not for me.

We were told we could select 3 wines to sample. What they didn't explain was that my husband and I were to share those samples...we weren't allowed to each select 3. The staff member stood in silence as we sampled the wines, offering no information on what we were sampling. Very awkward and rude. Neither of us cared for the wines we selected. The distillery staff member was a slight improvement over the winery tasting, but not enough to save the rating. He was friendly enough, but didn't care for the spirits either. I wouldn't recommend to someone traveling through.
