Flew into Batesville for a day to visit a client, decided to stay at the Sherman. Have to tell you…read moremy expectations were very low as I figured "I'm in middle of Indiana, how good can this be?" Well, to start, the hotel itself is small yet historic and completely remodeled. Room is small yet upgraded and i really enjoyed the shower water pressure. The bar has incredibly affordable prices (compared to la) but equally as tasty. The restaurant, despite poor reviews from what seems like folks with either unrealistic expectations or simply a poor palette, is incredible. Got the onion soup + brat plate -- worth every penny. Was the place fairly empty when i got in? Sure. But so was the town. I'd go back here in a heart beat. If you read any reviews about this place, read mine. I'm as picky as they come and really enjoyed myself here. In addition, those complaining about the prices of the restaurant.... don't come to LA. You'll just complain all day. To the owners of the hotel + restaurant = great job. To preserve a place that's almost 200 years old, while upgrading certain aspects to maintain an up to date look, is really inspiring. Edit : listening to tables near me, everyone is enjoying food + drinking beer and having a positive experience. Not sure what the poor reviews below me were talking about. One thing to note about reviews on a small business: don't be so harsh. This isn't some large corporation that has customer service departments to feed your complaints. Nice bar downstairs. Plenty of parking in the gravel parking lot which is well maintained (sports car friendly). The owners, Eric and Alyssa, are very friendly. I was happy that I found this place, because the room was adequate and it was fun to walk up and down the main drag in Metamora to see all the shops and restaurants open that weekend. I understand the accomodations of a b&b aren't going to be up to hotel standards, so if you expect that going in you shouldn't be disappointed with your stay. In the morning we had a yummy breakfast of cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy, fruit, cereal and anything else you could ask for. Betty did a great job making sure we were satisfied, and even sat and talked with us while we ate. You can't beat the price: $70 for the night we stayed. I would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone looking to stay in the area.

How can I NOT give this place 5 stars? They specialize in two of my favorite things...trains and…read morebooks. They've got a nice selection of used books, some that appear to be somewhat rare. In addition, they've got a supply of new books by local and regional authors, always a good sign! There are a lot of iron pans and skillets, too, if cooking is your thing. Add to that some posters, unique items, lots and lots of railroad lanterns and railroad related items, this is a fun place to stop while you're in Metamora. In addition, owners George and Gail have a wealth of information about the local area. They're friendly, personable folks. You'll enjoy your visit.

The staff is always friendly and I've honestly never bought anything from them that has been bad or tasted off. Most of what they carry isn't that far past the expiration date. But the huge reason for going here is, the prices. They have little signs posted, 4 full size candy bars for a dollar, or whatever, but they almost always charge you what they feel like charging. The last time my wife and I went in we got a full bottle of Claritin that was still in the box and it was marked for $3, A bigger bag and smaller bag of Planters honey roasted cashews, a bigger bag of Planters honey roasted peanuts, two large cookies n cream Rice Krispie Treats, two apple pie Kit Kat bars, a grab bag of Cheez-Its, a travel pack of Alka Seltzer Plus, and three travel packs of Advil (all pictured below) and they charged us $4. They mostly sell candy bars and nuts, but also offer bags of chips, a limited supply of grocery items, eggs, milk (I think), and a whole lot of other things. They're always bringing in new stuff. I bought a case of asparagus for $3.00, a case of tomatoes for $10.00, a huge bag (50)lbs of sweet onions for $20.00. I bought some miscellaneous items too. You just never know what you might find. It is so much fun and being out in the country without all of the junk in the air is good for your lungs which is also good for your heart. Bring a cart or a wagon, (if you're like me) and remember those neighbors and friends and family members when you see those great buys. I love sharing the big bags of fruits and vegetables. Grannies Cookie Jar & Ice Cream Parlor is a Metamora, Indiana icon, though it may be weird to call…read moreanything in this historic Franklin County town an actual "icon." There's quite a bit you know about me if you've followed my reviews for any length of time. This likely includes my long friendship with fellow Yelp Elites Rick G. and Holly G. - in fact, I performed their wedding ceremony! The three of us have actually collaborated on quite a few projects over the years, either due to Rick's music and comedy or because of my long history of activism and charity work. Frequently, our collaborations combine Rick and Holly's creativity with my activist spirit. For a couple years, Rick and Holly owned a shop in Metamora called Mosaic Learn & Play - I, in turn, owned a small charity bookstore within the walls of Mosaic. While I never spent nearly as much time in Metamora as did Rick and Holly, I spent my fair share of time there and grew to appreciate the picturesque, friendly town. Rick and Holly's wedding was even in Metamora! As is true of most historic towns, accessibility can definitely be an issue in Metamora. Truthfully, I'd say there's more that's not accessible than there actually is accessible in the town. Grannies is most certainly not perfect, a step greeting you at the front door and a crowded shop making even the most experienced wheelchair user more than a little paranoid. It's possible, I've been to Grannies more than once, but it's definitely a shop where I take my time wheeling and I am super careful everywhere I turn. Grannies, first of all, is an official world record holder. Granny owns over 2600 cookie jars - and I believe they're all actually here in this shop. She's held the record since 2012, as I recall. Grannies is, of course, an ice cream shop. Granny even makes all of her waffle cones by hand. Each one has a Hershey kiss at the bottom. She puts a whole lot of love in her waffle cones. The ice cream is pretty incredible, too. She has quite a few flavors and they're at reasonable prices for pretty darn amazing servings. Grannies is open 7 days a week throughout the year. While I can't say I'd drive all the way to Metamora for her ice cream, if I am in the Metamora there's no way I'm leaving without stopping at Grannies. Metamora is a beautiful little canal town. It has definitely been impacted by the pandemic, but the people are also hanging in there. I'm not quite going to say that time stands still here, but it's sure not a place you go to speed up. Metamora is a surprisingly easy drive from Indy and the entire Franklin County area could easily be a relaxing, fairly isolated day trip with Brookville also nearby as the seat of the county. There are even a couple places you can stay in Metamora, though they aren't particularly strong with access and you'd probably want to go to Brookville if that's needed. If you get a chance, head south to Metamora and be sure to stop in at Grannies for some ice cream and definitely check out those cookie jars!
