Flew into Batesville for a day to visit a client, decided to stay at the Sherman. Have to tell you my expectations were very low as I figured "I'm in middle of Indiana, how good can this be?" Well, to start, the hotel itself is small yet historic and completely remodeled. Room is small yet upgraded and i really enjoyed the shower water pressure. The bar has incredibly affordable prices (compared to la) but equally as tasty. The restaurant, despite poor reviews from what seems like folks with either unrealistic expectations or simply a poor palette, is incredible. Got the onion soup + brat plate -- worth every penny. Was the place fairly empty when i got in? Sure. But so was the town. I'd go back here in a heart beat. If you read any reviews about this place, read mine. I'm as picky as they come and really enjoyed myself here. In addition, those complaining about the prices of the restaurant.... don't come to LA. You'll just complain all day. To the owners of the hotel + restaurant = great job. To preserve a place that's almost 200 years old, while upgrading certain aspects to maintain an up to date look, is really inspiring. Edit : listening to tables near me, everyone is enjoying food + drinking beer and having a positive experience. Not sure what the poor reviews below me were talking about. One thing to note about reviews on a small business: don't be so harsh. This isn't some large corporation that has customer service departments to feed your complaints. Very nice Euro style Inn. Older German style but with modern updates including big screen flat TV, wifi access in room refrigerator etc. floors squeak a bit and some spots in halls are not level but add to the charm. No elevator! So travel light enough to hoist your luggage. Located in downtown area noise levels are quiet through most of night but gets noisy as town wakes up around 6:30 am. On site restaraunt, beir garden and bar are nice amenities. Overall a nice place to stay ! read more

What do you do on a cold winter day with no plans? Get in the car and start driving. We headed out and ended up in Batesville, IN ready for lunch so we stopped at The Sherman to sample delicious German food. The braut on a pretzel bun was outstanding with sauerkraut and horseradish mustard, and the potato cakes were scrumptious. Next time I'll ask for a side of sour cream as I think that would keep have been a better dip for them than ranch. A big surprise was the filet. It was tender, perfectly cooked Ann's seasoned to perfection. They also have amazing daily deals- on the day we were there it was $5 shrimp cocktail. If you are on 74 between indy and Cincinnati make sure you take a break at this local gem. read more

I stopped in here with a friend on the way back from Indianapolis. I suggested it as I have eaten here before, even though it was years ago. We were seated right away and ordered drinks (okay I had water) and ordered a meal. I ordered the meatloaf which I might say was some of the best I have had. The way the meal was presented I would have thought we were at a 5 star restaurant or somewhere trying to get a Michelin star. Prices are more than cheap fast food, but not as bad as a Michelin Star place. Even still I was pleasantly surprised. Then I ordered the Cheesecake. Let me say that I am not normally a cheesecake person as most places get it right off of the Cisco truck. I was told it was an old family recipe and I will say, that for once I would believe this was a family recipe or some form of miracle as this was the best cheesecake I have ever had. I would drive out of my way just to eat another piece of this. There is no topping other than the double cream that has been made wonderfully into this. Amazing is almost to soft for this. I stayed here for business and the business chose this hotel establishment. It is centrally located in town. Parking is free in the lot across from hotel. It is quaint and small. The rooms have been updated witH ikea furniture and finishings. The room I had was small but utilitarian. It was clean but no elevator in entire building. Breakfast is traditional continental. The entire place is German themed although when I got there the bars and resto were not open. Front desk staff was a young man from the Philippines who was very professional and courteous. read more

We planned a cycling team ride to St Leon and decided to make it a local adventure by staying at Sherman. Dinner and drinks were great addition to our Sherman visit. The staff and attention to details at this local gem were really asset to our stay. Example... our waiter helped me join VIP app to enable me to get my free pretzel... then later when we returned to bar, she left her dinner to take our drink orders. The front desk permitted us a late checkout... and the place is warm and charming. The food was so hot... we had to wait to eat. The pretzel was great and had an assortment of mustard and a white alpine inspired beer cheese. Creamy and rich. The Kraut Balls were tart crunchy and battered with shell. I went for Fish... did I mention it was hot, big halibut filet. It was hot. Chips fresh and crunchy. Red cabbage was added side, and very german style... my buddy had pork schnitzel and was very happy. His too was hot. This is a neat German restaurant located in downtown Batesville(!). The outside retains the old German architecture/charm, but the inside has received a complete makeover. The bar especially looks amazing. This would be a good place to come on a Friday or Saturday night (if I lived closerl for dinner and drinks. The food is very good, and in typical German fashion, plentiful. There are a lot of German classics (bratwurst, schnitzel) as well as American dishes (hamburgers, pasta, etc.). read more

The sign along Interstate 74 is the reason I knew about this place. It is a lodge and restaurant dating back to the 1850s. One thing I didn't like was William T. Sherman's photo just inside the front door. A union general burning the way through the south (Atlanta, etc.) does not endear one to Southerners. I digress. I am impressed with this restaurant, the service, the presentation/atmosphere of the restaurant. From the outside it has a taste of tudor style architecture. I had the Sauerbraten and Blue Cheese and dates salad. The sauerbrauten presentation and taste was like Germany (I lived in Germany/europe for years) and always must test the German fan-fair Stateside. The cost was surprisingly affordable. Batesville is a cute town and I liked walking around the downtown. I would suggest you stay the night here, I hope to if I am in this area again someday. But the greatest delight was the finish. I ordered the chocolate cake with the wineberry sauce. The chocolate was thick and heavy and the wineberry sauce took it to the top! The atmosphere is a really cool older German hotel/restaurant. The food was pretty good but a little on the pricey side. I had the spinach bacon salad and the dressing was amazing. Both kids had the cheeseburger on a pretzel bun and both devoured it. Overall a pretty cool placE to stop on a road trip not too far for 74. read more

Excellent service. We went on a Friday for lunch. We were seated immediately. It's clean and has some old world charm, mixed with the modern. The menu is two pages, so it's not overwhelming. The food was overall a disappointment, especially for the price. We had the Triple Play appetizer. The wings were juicy, but had no flavor. They needed seasoning. The sauerkraut bacon balls had no bacon flavor and were okay, but nothing special. The potato kegs were the best thing on the platter. They tasted great. For the entrees we had the Jagerschnitzel with warm German potato salad and Best Wurst Platter Ever with the potato salad. The wurst was very good. The Jagerschnitzel was too thin, overcooked (almost burnt), and tasteless, even with the mushroom gravy. The mushroom gravy had no flavor. They were a serious lack of salt and seasoning of any kind. The potato salad is strange. It's a cross between fried breakfast potatoes and traditional German potato salad. We didn't like the taste combination. We also had dessert. Caramel bread pudding and creme brulee. The bread pudding was good. It came warm with raisins, nuts, and a caramel topping. Whipped cream would have made it even better! The creme brulee was delicious, but it was extremely small for the price, it might have filled a 1/3 cup measuring cup. Also, this is a German restaurant, where is the bread? Overall it was okay but we probably won't go again given the price and quality of the food, which is unfortunately because the service and ambiance are excellent. read more

Would really like to give more stars and last year I would have given 5 but this year's visit was disappointing. We have stayed overnight before and enjoyed a delicious meal at the restaurant. I received an email with a weekend special for a room and meal voucher. When I called in the overnight reservation they did not mention that the restaurant is closed due to staffing and only the Beirgarten and Beer Hall were open for dining. Very disappointing as I was looking forward to their special German menu. We went to the Beer Hall for dinner. There was only one waitress who was scrambling so we went to the order window instead. After 90 minutes they had not even started our order...nobody came by to check on us or apologize for the wait until my boyfriend went up to cancel our food. They ended up preparing what we had ordered and comped us the meal but the service was lacking. The burgers ended up being delicious once we left and went back to our room. The rooms are simple and very European except that you have each room has its own bathroom. We love the charm of The Sherman Inn!!! The rooms are always spotless. We will probably be back hoping for our previous experiences rather than this latest. Really hope that management can get it together and bring the Inn back up to it's previous standards. read more

Nice place with good cocktails with menu options ranging from $$ to $$$. I tried a blackberry mint julep and I was really pleased! My husband and I split the Best Wurst Platter, which was really yummy. Unfortunately, they were out of one of the three sausages so we doubled up on one of them. I'd probably pass on the shrimp appetizer if I went again, but overall our food was good. Very disappointed with our visit. Limited selection of German fare, to my disappointment. I was looking forward to having their schnitzel, but they "ran out". At 12:30 in the afternoon. That's like McDonald's running out of french fries. Moving forward, German beer selection was anemic. Like, if you can't get THAT right, then why bother labeling yourself a German restaurant? All in all it's just a hick town medium of the road steak house with a German draft beer and a couple obligatory German dishes. Both my parents, all of my grandparents etc hail from Bavaria, so I grew up eating authentic German food. Take a trip to the Rathskeller in Indy for a far better German fare experience. Impressive. Ordered off the Daily Brunch Menu (Sunday). The Reuben was vey good; asked for a side of the Thousand Island dressing because found my sandwich a bit dry. The side I ordered, Warm German Potato Salad was plentiful and absolutely delicious despite it not looking like any GPS I've seen before. Resembled cubes of fried potatoes (not in a bowl of sauce/dressing) with sautéed onions and real bacon pieces. Very tasty. Wife and son ordered the General Sherman Breakfast. WHOA! A large breakfast and they loved it. I found the Guetta (side) some of the best I've ever eaten. Additionally, the sausage gravy was perfect: just enough pepper spice and excellent ratio of sausage to gravy. The biscuit was large, baked to a beautiful brown color outside with a soft inside. The bathroom was spotless with a floor that shined like a mirror. Definitely recommend you eat here. read more

Not really that good... Ambiance: the restaurant has a weird atmosphere. When we went, it was pretty empty but there was no music and it felt kind of awkwardly empty. Really cool German decor and very clean feeling, however. Also the bathrooms were nice! Food: The Bavarian pretzel was tasty! Highly recommend it! However, the stroganoff looked like it had been under a heat lamp for a long time and wasn't very good. The rest of our food was also just okay. The food is the main reason for the 3 star review. Service: Everyone was super friendly and ready to help!! I really enjoyed the service. Visiting Batesville on business I had no idea where to dine, my first night I selected another restaurant (by epic mistake) based on the high reviews. Second night with peers, also from out of town (France and Chicago), they remembered this place from a previous trip. What a pleasant surprise!! Wonderful atmosphere, perfect music in the background, food was outstanding!! We had the salmon. Wine list was VERY reasonable by the bottle, by the glass they had subpar choices BUT charged appropriately (what you would expect for $6-$8). The Sherman has been a place we look forward to going to on our way from Cincinnati, where we live, to our lake house near Batesville. Unfortunately after last weekends experience at The Sherman we won't be going back any time soon. I work in health care... we are in a pandemic! Not one server, greeter, bar tender was wearing a mask. On top of that , not one customer was wearing a mask. It was a busy Saturday night. The waitress coughed as she was taking my order. Did not feel safe at all! People won't keep coming there if the don't feel safe Sherman. And I'm telling my neighbors at the lake who like going there. read more

I really hesitate giving this restaurant even two stars. We attended an event in their banquet room, so we did not experience the complete menu, but what we did have was absolutely dreadful. The salad was unbelievably bitter. The goat cheese did not come close to balancing out the bitterness. The dressing to accompany it was an unidentifiable pink goo that didn't help at all. They somehow managed to make the pickled beets in it have absolutely no flavor at all. The second item was a gnocchi(I think) that was bland and gummy and had an almost chemical flavor). The chicken was in some sort of mustard cream sauce and over cooked and salty. I am a big salt eater, and this bordered on inedible. The carrots were all undercooked. By that I mean they were basically raw carrots. The bar service was atrocious as well. The man behind the bar (German? Swiss?) was rude to everyone. The other bar staff appeared to be running around frantically but nothing actually got served. We literally waited 15 minutes just to get the drink menu, and there were only 12 people total in the bar. In 20 minutes only 4 of those had been served. My husband and i took a ride to Batesville for the cherry ding a ling festivities and decided to try out The Sherman not really too hungry, wanting to split a Ruben possibly some German potato salad, but assuming it being a Sunday they only menu items offered were slim to none because of a buffet being offered we were a little disappointed, but with the aroma of the food we decided to stay and try it out. The waitress was very polite and helpful with the menu items that were available to us and how the buffet worked we kinda went with the flow and ordered two buffets with a mimosa. I will day most of the food was pretty good the prime rib, ham and fried chicken was great the lasagna not so much i hey it's a brunch Buffett but would of been nice to have a other sides besides the corn offered either potato salad coleslaw potato patties something. I guess the eggs, goetta,fried potatoes, biscuits and grave made up for the sides. My suggestion take of the lasagna add some German potato salad to go with the meats offered. Very big selection just not enough sides of you want to go more with the lunch portion of the buffet, oh and the gentleman on the carving station disappeared quit often had to wait on him a few times just to get the meat that was offered on the buffet. read more

Fabulous for a quick get-away! Got a great deal on Groupon too :) This is a restored hotel in a sleepy little town with lots of charm. Food was great and portions huge! The soft pretzel is not to miss and loved their sausage for breakfast. After dinner we hung at the bar and met several nice locals. Bartenders were fu and engaging as well as the folks in the restaurant. Room was nice and clean and quiet. All rooms are on second floor and there is no elevator, but staff quickly grabbed my suitcase and took it to our room. A great time and great place to celebrate our anniversary read more

I have not been to The Sherman in a while. Since my initial visit right after they first opened, I have noticed several things. First, the service has improved going from average to excellent - not sure what they did but they fixed it! Next, the food has improved had the Rueben and it was excellent, the German potato salad that I chose for my side was AMAZING and as silly as this sounds, the dill pickle was the best I've ever had, crisp, with just the right amount of tart and salt. We shared a piece of pecan pie that was really good, I think they soak the pecans in bourbon ( what's not to like right? ) served with vanilla ice cream it was the perfect finish. The only thought I had was ( and this isn't a complaint) that the pie should have been warmed. Don't know what kind of coffee they are brewing but it was FABULOUS. If you're traveling on 74 and want to stop a great place to eat with a relaxing atmosphere stop at The Sherman. We live locally and have taken this place for granted, we will be back! read more

This is one of our favorite weekend get-a-ways. The hotel is small, but they make sure you are comfortable. The bartender is very friendly with a lot of good information. He also makes very good drinks. The resturant is one of our favorites as well. We have never had a bad dinner and look forward to going often. We always ask for one of the coves to be very private. They also have a good wine list. I would highly recommend to stay, eat and visit the small shops nearby. read more

Stopped in for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The place was empty. The service was excellent, but again... the place was empty so what else would the kid be doing besides waiting on us diligently??? The kraut balls were good. The pretzel was good. Neither were great... just good. The pretzel was most likely a pre-made frozen item from sams club or Costco. The kraut balls seemed fresh but needed seasoning and more flavor. My wife had the hot turkey rueben sandwich. She said it was good. The hot German potato salad was pretty good. The potatoes looked to be frozen hash browns that were reheated. It needed salt and more vinegar to make it a real German potato salad. I had the Munich burger. It was terrible. They tried to tell me the mixture of beef and pork burger was supposed to taste like that, but honestly it tasted awful. If you could taste a smell, the burger tasted what the air at a cattle farm would taste like. It was like eating cow sh*t. It was disgusting. All in all, they have good service. Most of the food was ok. Nothing was delicious by any means. We won't be back, but hopefully they do well regardless. read more

Just stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday. Surprised to find a nice lunch special on the Reuben. I'm pretty particular about how I like my corned beef and they had a very nice ratio of kraut to meat... The essence of a good Reuben. Marbled rye was a nice touch. Monday night, only about 6 people in the restaurant and we have a group of 5... The service was extremely TERRIBLE! We waited over 15 mins before we were seen by our waitress (the gal who sat us took our drink order), it took about an hour before we received our food and then we're "comped" free desserts because our server "forgot to put our order in" but only two desserts and only a choice between cheesecake or creme brûlée... we saw 5 different servers delivering food and drinks, never once saw a manager to speak with either. They "just reopened" but maybe they need to close and train their staff! read more

Big portions and nice interior but some relatively big flaws. Every time I have gone they have been out of at least one menu item. On my most recent visit, it took 10-15 minutes for them to realize they did not have one menu item so the server came back to let my friend re-order. 5 minutes after that, a different staff member came out and announced they were out of another menu item. That being said, 3 of our 7 members had to re-order. For a place that had a $45 dinner special, that just seems silly. read more
