Great fried chicken. I ordered a full meat and three but really only wanted the chicken which was excellent and I don't like fried chicken. The reason filled up? I ate my homemade coconut cream meringue pie as an appetizer. Wanted to savor every bite. Can select white, dark or mixed chicken. Will go again. Easy to find if coming in from south side. If you're on the way, it's worth the stop, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there as most of the other comments state the restaurant is extremely dated, like your great southern grandma, chicken, decorations, old carpet, old tables chairs, etc. however the food is decent. We got there around 4 o'clock and was no wait. We had an excellent server ordered the fried chicken and three sides. Food prompt. Vegetables were cooked perfectly, chicken had a great flavor, but extremely overcooked. If you get the white meat, be expecting it to be dry, typical southern flour dredge. reasonably priced for the amount of food you get $15 for a platter. Pulley breast are small. The attitude of the employees is beyond unacceptable. They treated my stepmother so disrespectfully and then, to add insult to injury they tried to put the blame of not only messing up our order but also overcharging us on an specific meal that they have printed on their menus with a set price. Their poor excuse was, it was her (my stepmother) fault due to the fact that she didn't speak English as perfect as their country bumpkin selves thought she should've been speaking it! 1st, when my step mother order via telephone she had them on speaker phone with me right next to her. I heard the entire conversation. She spoke perfectly clear and proper English! 2nd, this isn't the first time one of the employees at this establishment has openly disrespected her. Rudely HOLLERING, "you need to speak better English", when she's been less than a foot away! The epitome of how the rest of the US thinks Alabama people are... uneducated, racist, and pure trash! That is how these lovely ladies of this establishment have represent themselves, on more than one occasion! FYI, yes you're right, English isn't my step mothers first language, obviously meaning that her intelligence surpasses the norm of not just having the ability to retain, but also read, write, and speak fluently in two completely different languages! I was thinking that this place was going to really knock my socks off but honestly it was just ok. The fried chicken was pretty great but some of the meat was a bit dry. The sides were pretty decent but sadly I didn't order the best ones. I liked the creamed corn and the mashed potatoes so I highly recommend those. I would strongly encourage you to avoid the Chicken Fried Steak. Its not very good and doesn't taste like it was fried at all. It is just hamburger meat with gravy. So that was a bit weird. When I ask someone what the best soul food in the gump is, they always answer with Martin's. Martins fried chicken keeps me alive, and up at night at the same time. I've been to a bunch of different soul spots around mgm, nothing compares to Martin's. Seriously if this place ever closed down I'd host a funeral in my backyard for this spot. Anyone giving this place a 4 or below is just a hater and doesn't know soul food. Seriously I go to this place on my birthday every year. Having seen first hand the damage the Waffle House can do to someone, I always choose my southern eating places carefully. Earlier in the day I received a text from Grace making fun of me for being 2,000 miles away from Ad Hoc's fried chicken night. Because of this, I was determined to get some real southern fried chicken. Lucky for me, Martin's specializes in fried chicken. While I haven't yet tried Mr. Keller's chicken at Ad Hoc, I can say that he's got his work cut out for him if he wants to compete with Martin's. Finding Martin's was a little tricky. I asked the concierge at the hotel how to get there. Archie: So you say I pass the Winn Dixie and the Sonic after the 6 churches? Concierge: Yes sir. But don't go past the 6th church, there are 4 more after that. It's easy though. Archie: Easy? How so? Concierge: Well, it goes Protestant, Lutheran, Methodist, Jesuit, Bapist and then it repeats with Protestant so once you pass the 2nd protestant, you're there. Archie: Sweet. What makes a place 5 star worthy? The food? The service? Of course. But another 5 star quality is intangible. It's that feeling you get when you are in a uniquely local place. This is my kind of place! I love down home cooking and Martin's fits the bill perfectly. Nothing fancy, just good food in a friendly environment. Lots of locals here which made it extra special. Two of our adjoining tables even started friendly conversations with us. Several selections to choose from depending on the day. Wanted some good Southern Soul food and found this place on Yelp. Came around lunch time and it was packed, but we only waited 10 mins for a table. We ordered their fried chicken and beef tip with Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, collard greens, green beans and some rolls. The corn bread and rolls came out piping hot! I'm sure Robert Irvine would not give the decor a pass, as it's difficult to tell what the original color of the carpet was and the place hasn't been updated in years, but I'm also sure that the good people of Montgomery couldn't care less. It's all about the food, and the food is good. I've had the fried chicken on both of my visits here and it's wonderfully crispy outside and succulent inside. The corn bread muffins that come to the table are delicious; it required an act of will for me to eat only one, but I wanted to save room for what was to follow. They give you plenty of food here and the sides are good...not the best I've had, but everything was tasty. I went with the mashers and gravy, green beans and black eyed peas and was satisfied. The only thing I missed on my return was the chow-chow they had on the table during my first visit; it was yummy and obviously homemade. The people here were so nice. Not just the staff, but the patrons as well. I dropped by here on a cross-country trip and this is when I knew I was in the South. I came by on a Sunday, when the Church crowd had just came in. Great chicken, incredible candied yams, and the best chocolate pie I've ever had in my life. I really started to sweat once I ordered the fried chicken, because I know it can take a while, but what was I supposed to do? You have to get the fried chicken. Luck was smiling down upon me that day, because Martin's is well-versed in the business lunch. My meat and three came out within ten minutes, and it was just about the most perfect fried chicken you could ever hope to achieve - crazy crunchy skin with juicy meat, and even if I burned my tongue several times on the nuclear-hot bird, it was worth it. The meat was great, though the three were less so - run-of-the-mill mac and cheese and long beans, pretty good greens. They even price the food so with tax it comes to an even $10. I don't understand the hype. The restaurant itself was filthy. The carpets are disgusting and caked with dirt and food, and the table had clearly not been wiped down before we were seated. The server, while friendly, was clearly overworked and stressed. I found the fried chicken to be dry and bland, very disappointing. This was my second visit to this homey Montgomery legendary restaurant. I ordered fried chicken and picked green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and steamed rutabaga as my three sides. The chicken was crispy, juicy and delicious. Likely will remain in my 10 best list. The sides are good. Solid, not special. I finished with a piece of coconut cream pie with merengue.
