While I was eating I noticed that the Tuesday special was Prime Rib and I heard that the Wednesday special was Prime Rib Sandwich. I am coming back for those. We stumbled upon this mom-and-pop, greasy spoon, homecookin, so-good-make-you-wanna-slap-ya-mama spot right before we caught a flight home. The outside and even the entrance kind of make you want to turn around and run. However, we stayed the course and I'm glad we did. Other than having the usual burgers and sandwiches menu, they also have daily specials. When a mom-and-pop shop has daily specials, you go with the daily special. I did just that and received heaven on a plate, pot roast with mashed potatoes covered in gravy. However, that's not all. It came with black-eyed peas, lima beans, and cornbread. To top it all off, I even snagged up some delicious buttermilk pie (I know, gross right? Not at all!). The chocolate cake looked huge but I couldn't fit anymore in my stomach. The food was authentic and delicious and fast. Overall, what a great little restaurant. The staff is extremely friendly, like "honey" and "darlin" friendly. If I lived here, I'd go every day. Well, I am not a big beef eater, but my spouse is so we stopped here today before a visit with Hyundai. Very cool and interesting place. Was cool to see the auction stands. We had a couple minutes to wait so we used the restrooms. BRW. There Are no locks on the ladies room door. I ordered a grilled chicken salad. I ordered ranch dressing on the side. He ordered a burger Staff are very friendly. Wet friendly. That is a treat! My salad came without dressing and consisted of a small chicken breast partially sliced through on top of iceberg lettuce a couple tomato wedges and shredded cheese. The burger comes with fries. So we had read all the reviews so we knew what we were getting into with the ambiance. It can be off putting but once you get past that it's completely worth it. The service was fantastic and everyone was very friendly. There was a little bit of a wait but it went quicker than expected. Now on to the food. This food was some of the best food we have had in a long time. My wife got the steak sandwich (she is very picky and critical) and she said it was the best steak sandwich she has ever had. I had a taste of it and it definitely was amazing. I got the chicken and dumplings and the flavor was fantastic. I also got a choice of three sides which desert was included in that. I ended up with a coconut pie and omg was it good!!! My kids loved their food as one got the steak, one got the double cheeseburger and the other got the chicken fingers. Well, let's get to this review: Atmosphere: You will see cowboys walking in and out of this place. It's very casual and can get crowded at lunch. If you decide to sit in and there's more than 2 of you, I'd call first. Cattle is sold on the premises, so if you've never seen a bidding, catch a glimpse. It's pretty interesting! Customer service: the staff is really nice! Typical southern hospitality type service. I felt very comfortable asking for what I needed and making my order. Food: 5 out of 5! That score is mostly right here! I don't typically eat a full burger, but the plain cheeseburger was deeelish! Very tender. The fries are meh. If you're driving through Montgomery, Alabama around lunch time. The place to stop and eat is the Stockyard Grill. It opens just for lunch at 10:30am and closes at 2pm. It's like an old southern diner. It seems to be a favorite local lunch spot. Don't expect nothing fancy on the outside but the food is great on the inside. The menu is simple and good. It's much better than stoping at a fast food joint. The overall staff seemed to be very nice and helpful. The attire is causal. There's plenty of parking in the front. I had the steak sandwich and tater tots and it was good. My wife had the club sandwich and it was also very good. We like stopping at novelty Restaurants like this and we we're glad we did. Probably gonna have to wait 10-15 minutes to be seated after you sign in for seating after arriving, but I found the wait worth waiting for. Not much of a menu, steak, hamburger, or fish - but ALL of it is delicious. I had the fried catfish, fries and slaw. Outstanding! My wife had the cheeseburger with tater tots and they were very good as well. We split a slice of buttermilk pie that was gone in 60 seconds. I think the reputation is based more on being the local gathering place rather than the quality of the cuisine. As we were passing through, we noticed this place via TripAdvisor and decided to give it a try. Walking up, we saw people waiting outside during lunchtime. I really wasn't sure I wanted to wait that long since we were headed to the beach. Still, put our names on the list. Didn't take long at all...maybe ten minutes. Well... I have to say when we pulled up I was slightly worried I had picked the wrong place to celebrate my sons graduation from OTS. We walked in and I felt like I was at Jackie in Nipomo! 10oz rib eye and shrimp for $16? Wait a minute... when the food cane I didn't even take a picture of it... dove right in and was not disappointed with the seasoning on my rib eye. We stopped here for lunch on the way to NOLA as an interesting alternative to fast food. It's definitely a restaurant in a working stockyard/auction barn, which is kinda interesting to check out... but FYI the whole building smells a little funky. Didn't bother this country girl. I ordered the cheeseburger. I usually feel like all burgers taste more or less the same, but this one was different and super tasty. Wish I knew what was in their seasoning blend! You hear of a restaurant located within a cattle auction and is known for their burgers, your mind makes a leap from one to the other, and assumes that the restaurant's beef must be top notch because the cows are RIGHT THERE. This assumption skips the butchering process, of which I don't think Stockyard is at all equipped. Compounding the issue is Stockyard's identity, which is primarily that of a meat and three restaurant. The burgers get their own spot on the menu, but you get the feeling the focus is on the daily stuff like fried chicken, meatloaf, etc. Regardless, Stockyard and Hamburger King were two of the five finalists chosen for the "Alabama's Best Burger" contest back in 2011... a contest organized by the Alabama Cattlemen's Association, of which the Montgomery Stockyard is a member, but I'm sure it's just a coincidence - the vote was primarily accomplished by Facebook votes. Either way, I wanted to try that burger, if only because the burger scene in Montgomery leaves much to be desired. The tiny restaurant fills up quickly during their daily three hours of operation, so rather than wait ten minutes for a table, I walked up to the counter to make a to-go order. The nice girl taking my order tried to upsell me from my requested cheeseburger to their special sandwich, a sandwich that packs both a burger and a 5oz piece of steak between the same two buns. Let's pause for a moment to think about this. Sheer amount of beef aside, burgers started as a means of using the tough scraps that we didn't want to discard. To top that with a piece of steak is not only antithetical to the whole concept of a burger, but there's absolutely no way the combination could work due to the contrasting textures. Even the most tender steak in the world is still going to require a considerable amount of chew in comparison to the pillowy give of a well-packed hamburger. And I saw a picture of this burger on Facebook - it's not the most tender steak in the world. This sandwich seems like a product of someone who doesn't have a point of view besides "beef, and lots of it". Meat and three restaurants, especially those who deal with a working lunch, make it a priority to get your food to you as fast as humanly possible. Most of the hard work is done ahead of time anyway (don't ask me what kind of voodoo it takes to turn out a good piece of fried chicken under that kind of time crunch, though), and as someone who doesn't have all day to wait around, I appreciate that. Dispite this, I was surprised that the time it took me from order at the takeout counter to getting my burger was less than five minutes. In a completely packed restaurant. This was not a burger that was completely made to order. It tasted like it, too: the thick patty was seared well, and seasoned, but overcooked and dry. combined with the plain white bun and boring onion, lettuce, and tomato, it was a significant disappointment from what I had built up in my mind. Sure, I admit my expectations of Stockyard Grill were largely a product of my own doing, but when you eat out an average of six times a week, you burn through Montgomery's clear favorites pretty darn quickly. We want to believe that there's some hole in the walls that will reveal themselves if we take the time to do the work, especially in a town where so much Yelp activity ends up reviewing the same restaurants that already have the most reviews. Even if it wasn't a home run, Stockyard Grill is a pretty unique concept, and probably puts out a mean daily special (as a side, I had some mixed greens that were plenty good), but to expect the world from them is asking too much. read more

Visited the Stockyard Grill for lunch today with my wife. We asked several people what was best to try and we receive a unanimous "Everything is Great!" We were told that the Stockyard hamburger was voted the second Best Hamburger in Alabama and that they specialized in excellent steaks, which made sense they know beef as it is located at the Montgomery Stockyard and Sales. After the recommendations and finding out that their "Dam Sandwich" was a combination of their famous steak sandwich with their award winning cheeseburger stuffed inside the sandwich... I ordered the Dam sandwich which came with fries and a piece of Buttermilk Pie (the reason we went to the Stockyard Grill was because my wife has heard from numerous people in the tri-county region that the owner - Jennifer- hand makes the BEST Buttermilk Pie in the World!). The Dam Sandwich was the best sandwich that I have ever tasted. I did not even need to put an condiments on the sandwich... the juices from the grilled steak and the hand-patted burger were wonderful mixed with the grill onions and cheddar cheese on Texas toast. Would recommend to anyone who loves beef! It is so good it would convert any vegan to being an carnivore! My wife tried the steak sandwich, which was the same as a Dam sandwich less the cheese and the hamburger. She ate the whole thing, which concerned me as she never eats everything on her plate! She was very pleased with the taste and the presentation of the food and that is a recommendation in itself as she is more of a chicken person. Now... to the epic taste sensation of this lovely meal... homemade Buttermilk Pie! This dessert stands above all else that I have ever tasted in my entire life! The pie was both creamy and textured at the same time. The sweetness was perfect! It had the hit of the tartness from a churned butter milk, but it blended with the sweetness like the greatest symphony by the greatest composer and played by the most outstanding master musician! Do not go there thinking you are going to get top notch steak and burgers, but they do a decent job compared to most lunch spots around Montgomery. It's a bit out of the way, but would you want a Stockyard in the middle of a city? I think not. Go early or late, as the place is very crowded at peak lunch time. This is a lunch spot only, no supper for you! Suggestions to the restaurant: Serve higher quality sides. Anyone can fry up French Fries. Came here on a business trip a while back and this is the first place the locals took us out to lunch to. It has a very homey, hole-in-the-wall feel to it. And the servers treat you like you're family, so it's a warm environment and friendly atmosphere. The special for the day that we went was the Prime Rib and we loved it. Pretty tender and very good value for the price...I think it was somewhere around $10 or $11, so totally worth it. I definitely wanna come back multiple times to try the other specials and desserts. Kinda cool that there's an actual stockyard there, I took a bunch of pics...never knew that cattle/stock was auctioned off like that. Definitely not the best place for a larger group during the lunch rush because we had to wait a bit to get seated, and even then, we had to sit at 2 different tables...but it was still OH SO WORTH IT! read more
