I had a truly excellent experience here on 12/14/24! Great old-school rental and tuning shop that RENTS SKI JACKETS!! (Marty saved me so much time and $$; I got everything I needed in one place, on my way to the mountain :) I initially came in just to have my binding settings adjusted, but after talking with me extensively about my skiing habits, reviewing all the binding guidelines, and discussing my strong desire to not incur knee injuries (lol), we decided to leave the settings as they were. Marty had thoroughly checked the binding release action on both points of both skis, and I had the benefit of his expertise, so I expected to pay at least something for that, but he declined any payment. So, I took the opportunity to have him give my skis a much-needed sharpening and wax, which he did, by hand, in about 20-30 minutes. We had a very nice chat while he worked; he's got all the local insider info about Killington and the area! He asked where I was off to next, and I explained that I was going to goodwill to try to find a cheap ski jacket, having forgotten mine as it was hung in a closet rather than bagged with the rest of my gear, and I was happy to discover that he also rents ski jackets- a too-well-kept secret! Don't expect anything fancy, but if you want something to keep you warm, for only $10/day, come here!! Later on, as I worked my way down some classic early-season black diamond trails, with generally great conditions but also the usual skiied-off areas, and my friends talked about how icy the trails were, I realized that the edge sharpening had made a huge difference for me! Marty went above and beyond in equipping our family with gear for a day of skiing at Pico. Not only did he hook us up with skis at a great price, he offered tips and tricks to maximize our fun and comfort on the slopes. Marty has a quick wit and is great with children. His location is super convenient- particularly if you are skiing at Pico, just a mile or so down the road. Last February I rented skiing equipment from this shop and the skis were very old. That day, I fell at Pico and the skis did not eject. The Ski dragged my right leg and broke it (both my tibia and fibula). If I had better equipment, this life altering injury could have been avoided. After the break I went through two surgeries and have 2 feet of metal inside my tibia as well as screws. It's been almost 1 year and I still don't feel anywhere near back to normal and still go to physical therapy. I wish I could have gone back and just rented from Pico instead of trying to save money. Now this injury will follow me for the rest of my life and I cannot even sue the place because I basically signed my life away when I rented. This has been expensive financially and physically. Found Marty and BSR online as family was heading to Killington for the week. Thought about a local shop in Albany but they had no short term rentals. Marty was a champ. He set up our teen with a great outfit including (most importantly) great fitting boots. Gear was in good rental shape, added a goggle purchase and we were ready to hit the slopes. I would strongly recommend against this place. You can read below for further details, but really what summed it up for me was the reaction of the ski intructor and ski patrol professionals at Pico when we mentioned my nephew and brother rented our skis at this place. They clearly did not approve of Budget. These are professionals dealing with skiers all winter, and while they didn't necessarily say anything inflammatory, both were familiar with Budget ski rental and seemed to say that they've seen their share of issues with the equipment AND service, like the ones I detail below. But I know some people like details, so here is some more: I stayed in the Killington area a few weeks back. I always like to save a few bucks by renting skis off mountain. However, this place did not work well for me. I called Budget a week or so before, and their prices were higher than the nearby shops (High Altitude, etc). Not severely higher, but a few bucks a day. The guy on the phone, I believe the owner, seemed to care less about answering some of my basic questions about type of equipment. But because it was so close to Pico and some of my friends had limited time, my brother went there, and he had an even more awful experience. Both on pickup and departure he had issues with Marty, the owner. On pickup, there was some dispute about sizing/fitting my nephew's boot. He didn't have a sizer. The owner said "you're his dad, you should know his shoe size." I have two daughters and am a very involved dad, and I don't know their shoe sizes. That's a pretty insulting/inflammatory thing to say. The equipment seemed fine enough, but the plastic tip on the ski had loosened for my brother, and my nephews helmet was beat up and the clip on the chin strap was faulty. On the way back he addressed the minor issue with the ski, and again Marty was very rude to my brother, saying something along the lines of "I know you're type - from Greenwich." Man, really sounds like an awful guy, he said that pretty much unprovoked. Who insults customers like that? Customer service really matters in this business, and this guy clearly is grumpy and I'm not sure why he is in the service business. If you have to go here, I hope you catch him on a good day and get lucky. The ski patrol and instructors clearly say it all, it is best you get your skis at the mountain or go somewhere else. read more

Marty is a true ambassador to the great sport of skiing. I grew up on the mountain and used to race, but life has since taken me to places that only allow for skiing a few times a year. When I come back to visit, I always rent from Marty. Not only is he committed to keeping his prices affordable, he really takes his time to get you the right fit. I rarely write negative reviews , but I feel compelled to tell others about my experience dealing with this "curmudgeon " of a man. I've met a very diverse group of people in my life , good and bad, and am able to get along with most , but I have never , ever, met as rude and condescending a person in my life as Marty . Ok let me get straight to the facts; my 9 yo son and I had driven up straight from Ct to meet my brother and his family for a few days of skiing at Pico, and my brother had suggested I hit a shop to rent equipment with close proximity to the mountain. Since he had already been up for several days he had noticed a budget place that was real close to Pico, so in to Marty's I went arriving around 945 with my son . There was just one young guy being attended to by Marty , who appeared to be in the process of wrapping up having his board waxed. I say hello and tell him my son and are would like to rent skis, boots , and poles for 3 days. Without any kind of greeting or even looking up , he barks out "what size are you "? I tell him my size and say that I'm not exactly sure what size shoe my son is and simply ask if he could measure to make sure. He says to me , "you don't know your own sons shoe size?"and "you're the parent , you need to know these things " and "that's not my job to know " At this point , one part of me wanted to tell him to go to hell and walk out as he clearly was a rude person, but I was meeting my brother at mountain soon and just wanted to get in and out as quickly as possible - So now the one guy in the store is gone , and he still can't even come from behind the counter to help my son get fitted properly , so I'm left to try a few kids boots by removing the insert sleeve , and I'm able to find a pair his size , still by no assistance from him - I should add here that all his equipment was old and beat up, but we get our stuff , and I give him my info , address and such, he has the nerve to say , "Oh I should have know your from Greenwich , everybody I meet from down your way are all the same, last guy from Fairfield County was just like you "....now remember , I'm there with my 9 year old boy , and wanting to not lose my cool and set an example of how to act, but at same time demonstrating the ability to stand up for yourself. No wonder the store was empty, I have never in my life been treated like that by a store owner, especially when it was completely unwarranted, I hadn't been pushy in the least. I understand about people perhaps having a bad day , and could have overlooked a little grumpiness , but he insulted me in front of my son for no good reason whatsoever . I will also add that my sons helmet (which we also rented there ) was old and defective , and needed to have a ski instructor on the mountain who was nice enough to creatively fix it for us. Here's the icing on the cake , when the ski instructor asked us where we had rented the helmet and equipment, the expression on his face said it all ; evidently faulty equipment issued by Marty is a regular occurrence . In conclusion , Marty's store seems to me to be like somewhat of a "trap " because it has "Budget" in the name , and it is very close to Pico mountain . But you have to remember that you get what you pay for in life , and nothing is worth being treated in the manner in which he treated us . Avoid this place, just rent on the mountain, don't jet this angry old man ruin your ski experience. read more

Do yourself a favor and call into Marty's. even if you just need toe warmers, his knowledge of the area and his enthusiasm about life and skiing will put you in good stead to hit the slopes. Marty went all out when he found out my wife was from Utah and have her BRAND NEW skis and poles - he literally took the wrappers off her Blizzard skis "hey" he said "some one's gotta be the first to use 'em." There was no extra charge for that. He will take the time to perfectly tune your skis to your height/weight/ability. What's more he will give great recommendations on the best runs for the current weather conditions, and the best places to eat and drink. Marty is a 60 year old who skis 50+ days a year. We passed Marty's Budget Ski Rentals on our way into Killington, and stopped in on a whim to see if we wanted to get my ski rentals there. Man, am I glad we did. The other reviewers say it all about Marty's knowledge, personality, and professionalism (not to mention the best rental prices we found), so I'll just add that Marty's freely given tips and advice about the mountains, conditions and the town made a huge impact on our trip. He even took a couple runs with us when we ran into him on the mountain later in the week, and gave me some really useful friendly tips ( "run" into was almost literal for me = ) Bottom line, our trip was better for having met Marty. read more

I was recuperating from a leg injury and decided to ski on my 15 year old Salomons, instead of renting. I had not skied in 2 years due to health problems. On the morning of Dec. 28, I called Marty. He said to bring them in, he will tune them and check the skis and bindings. We arrived late after 6 PM. The lights were out, we thought we missed him. However, he saw us, turned the lights out and welcomed us. He checked my skis (no charge), said they needed a tune, proceeded to hand tune them (very rare these days). He charged an extremely reasonable price for the exam and tuning. We shared a few stories about his cat, who used to think he owned the place, and a few ski stories. He gives true old fashioned service with a smile. He is a great guy, very honest and sincere. I will never go to another ski store without checking in with Marty first. read more

I went skiing at Killington for the first time in 15 years and on the first day the shell of my boots shattered on Outer Limits. At my friend's suggestion stopped by Marty's to get boot rentals to fit my skis and he took the time to find the right pair, adjusted the skis and was extremely knowledgable in explaining everything to my friend and I. A trip to Marty's Budget Ski Rental for our equipment has become more of a tradition for us than a chore. It is our first stop on every trip to Killington. Marty is extremely helpful and it is always takes his time to fit each skier. My kids would not stop any place else to get their skis. Don't waste your time here. Marty has very old and questionable equipment, dark and dingy and a really bad attitude. He basically told us very rudely at least 3 times that we came to a budget rental so we obviously shouldn't expect good service. We were planning on just coming in for a snowboard and quickly getting out of there, but he gave us lots of tips and tricks and some fantastic stories along with a great beginner board and boots for my friend. I had a great experience at Marty's. I needed a ski set for my girlfriend and a quick edge for my set. Marty gave my girlfriend an almost new set of skis and even put some wax on it for free. Super cool guy that was nice to chat with while he was getting our stuff ready. The rental was the cheapest in the area too. He doesn't do boot molding or doesn't have demo skis, but for a regular set of skis for a beginner-intermediate his prices and skis are the best in the area. read more

This guy is terrible and very unhelpful. He sold me a broken boot, the clip for the boot was broken and he was very rude and basically said it's my problem. His equipment is terrible and dirty. Never go to him he is not a good deal and everything he has is complete crap he also tried selling me a cracked snowboard. read more
