This place is a joke. My cobbler in California was a master craftsman, an artist who took great pride in his work, with wonderful attention to detail; he would return your shoes good as new. Marvin's Shoe Service is two-bit shoe repair. I went in with my pair of well-worn knee-high moccasin boots that I have had for 6 years, and have previously taken to my California cobbler for maintenance before I moved. One of my boots needs a new zipper, and the pair is due for a cleaning and touch up. The man took my boots and declared there was mold on the foot part, and I quickly corrected him that no, the fine white powder was in fact alkali dust from a dried up desert lake bed. (I corrected him only because I imagine that in order to clean something properly you must know what substance is on it.) He was very dismissive and seemed uninterested in knowing and understanding. Fine. So he quoted me a price for the zipper. Bit higher than I would have paid in California, but fine. But HERE's the kicker. THEN he told me that before he repaired my boots that I had to take them home and CLEAN THEM MYSELF. I was in disbelief. Keep in mind there was no dirt or mud on the boots, just fine dust. I said, "But you are a cobbler, I do not know how to safely clean my leather boots, that's why I'm bringing them to you." Then he said, "Well I DON'T HAVE TIME to clean your boots". I had in no way indicated that I wanted them done in some sort of hurry, or by a certain date. I would have been fine with them taking a month to get done. I repeated "You don't have TIME?" He said "Look around, I have a lot to do." Apparently he has time to put a zipper in, but can't be bothered to do menial things like clean and treat a boot. I must do that myself. Unbelievable. I was so taken aback. Again, if you need new soles put in or maybe shoelaces restrung or something, take your shoes here for this kindergarten SHOE REPAIR. If you want a REAL COBBLER who is a master of his craft, GO ELSEWHERE. read more

When you walk through the door of this shop, you may stop and think to yourself, "hmm...how do they keep up with everything in here?" They don't. This shoe shop misplaced my shoes. The owner offered to call me when the shoes were found, but didn't he call until I'd come by to inquire twice more. (I'm not sure he even looked). A month and one week after I left my shoes to have the heels replaced, they finally found them and THEN repaired them (as it was a 10-minute repair). Oh, and they still charged me. I have had shoes that have had worn through heels, soles, needed stretching, reinforcement, etc. and he does all of that at an overly reasonable price. These guys have pretty decent prices. Really nice, Southern folk who understood what I needed done to my shoes. However, they are almost always super busy so don't believe it when they say they'll have them done by the time they say. Apparently they haven't learned the maxim, "Under Promise, Over Deliver." I went in three times in one month and found the shoes werent ready yet. I wasn't angry because I do have other shoes to wear, but I did think the organization was lacking. Marvin's used to be a pretty decent shoe repair shop. I have been using them over 20 years. However, I have noticed over the past few years the quality of their repair has really gone down. It seems the repairs never last long anymore. I took a couple of pair of shoes in to them early this year to have the soles glued back on. The repairs lasted less then one month. I started to go back and complain, but figured that would do me no good. I came to think about their repairs and realized I have been having problems with their repairs for the past few years at this shop. I do not like paying good money for repair service and have the repair fail in a short period of time. I will not be using them again and will be looking here on Yelp for a better shop close to where I live. read more

I had the heel of my leather boots replaced here. I thought the work on the heel was fine and at a reasonable price. However, as someone who keeps my nice leather boots in good condition, I was very upset to pick up my boots and find that they were stored folded in half in a cubby and now have permanent creases all throughout the leather. I'm bad to my heels and purses. Once I find a pair that I love, I wear them down. My favorite pair of heels was down to the metal and Marvin's fixed them! (for only $9). Much cheaper than the pain of trying to find a super comfy, pretty pair of heels. The also fixed my purse quite well and cheaply. If I could deduct a half star, I would, just because it took so long (about 2 and a half weeks). It was worth it though. I would have had to throw my heels away! read more

I took a pair of black patent pumps here to have the heel repaired. They told me it would take a week and they would call me when it was ready. After 12 days, I had not heard anything so I called and they could not find my shoes. They said they were going to look for them and they would call me back. After an hour of not hearing from them, I decided to just stop by. The shop was unorganized (which might be why they lost them to begin with). The guy told me I could look around to see if I saw them. I finally saw them on the floor hanging on the side of a bag with someone else's stuff and they had not been done yet. I explained to them that I needed them and asked if they could have them done that day. They were able to and I picked them up. I also dropped off another pair of heels on that day to be repaired. They told me they would be ready in a week. I called 9 days later and he said he was working on them at that moment. Bottom line: they do a great job and are fairly inexpensive but they are unorganized and they take way longer than what they tell you. read more
