The pandemic happened. I worked from home. I haven't had Mary Brown's for a few years. Recently, was in the western end of Markham. I needed to fetch some dinner. I did a search on my Uber Eats app and found a BOGO deal at Mary Brown's. Perfect! The Big Mary sandwich was BOGO. I also got a large mac and cheese, and a small waffle-cut fry poutine. My app stated that it would take fifteen minutes for my order to be ready. I was good taking my time driving northbound along Woodbine Avenue. I needed to make a left turn. I've been to this area before, with Freshii, Pizza Studio, Big Smoke Burger, and more in this plaza. I had an impatient dealer car behind me who honked while there was oncoming traffic and wanted to bypass me to make a turn. I had never seen that move before. If he wanted to get hit by oncoming traffic, be my guest, but don't do a tailspin into my car. I turned left. He gave in and followed suit. Weird. I parked away from Mary Brown's, as there was a tow truck helping out a car closer to the eatery. I realized walking over that I could have parked closer to the entrance. There were spots for pickup orders like mine. I walked in. This eatery is humungous. It was nice seeing St. John's row houses as a backdrop on the wall. I saw a cubicle area where you could pick up orders through the Mary Brown's app. There is a lot of seating and it looked clean. There was a customer ahead of me. I waited patiently before I headed up to the front. I got a nice woman. I showed her my Uber Eats order details. She nodded and grabbed my paper bag with my order. I thanked her and headed out the door. I had my food once I got home. I was excited to have dinner. My Big Mary's sandwich looked small in my hand. I do have large hands. However, this sandwich is a bit deceiving. The chicken was thick. It had a crispy exterior. It was juicy and fully cooked. I loved it. It was filling. The bun with the signature pickle slice on top was yummy. I loved this sandwich so much. I had the other one the following day. I got a large mac and cheese. It's a cold salad. I'm not sure why it has the cheese part in it. It doesn't taste cheesy at all. What's funny is that I don't mind that it isn't cheesy. I like macaroni salad and this version makes me happy. It's creamy and cold. The macaroni is cooked perfectly. I had half the mac and cheese salad during this meal. I had the rest the next day. I consumed all my waffle-cut fry poutine. The cheese curds were stretchy and the real deal. There was lots of gravy, which I love. It was salty, though. Bummer. The waffle fries were yummy. If the gravy wasn't so salty, this poutine would have been excellent. Instead, it was good and I needed a lot of beverages to quench my thirst. It was great finally visiting this eatery. I'm a fan. At the counter in store,…read morewe ordered the 9 pieces of chicken, three spicy Big Mary chicken sandwiches, and a side of taters for dinner for three people. They had the Big Mary Mondays $5 deal on sandwiches. The 9 pieces of chicken was $33. When we got home to eat, we found that there were only two sandwiches, and only one of them was spicy. One sandwich had pickles sitting on top of the bun. The other had the pickles inside, but it had no lettuce while the other did. There were no sauces included at all. I enjoyed the sandwich, but I probably liked it more because it was $5. It wasn't enough food for me, so I proceeded to eat more chicken. I thought the chicken was fine, but my dining companions commented on the dryness and lack of flavour of the chicken. I did notice the blandness in it, which really could have been helped with some sauce. The taters were too salty.

I parked at around 3 pm on a Saturday and went in. My Groupon was for six chicken tenders, two sides, two drinks, and two biscuits. I was greeted by a competent, friendly woman. She went to get a pen to jot down my Groupon number. She then let me know that my original chicken tenders would take three minutes. Nice! I ordered two orders of coleslaw as my sides. While I was waiting, I witnessed a young man lose his mind when another staff member was making a sundae for this man's friend. The staff member put a honey-butter biscuit in the butterscotch sundae. Wow! I enjoyed seeing this guy lose his mind. I could relate. I was doing the same inside. Sure enough, I got my goodies and went to chow down. The chicken tenders are amazing! They are hands-down my favourite tenders that I have had this year. The breading was light and crispy. It was almost like tempura, but with more substance. The tenders were juicy and matched their name -- totally tender. You pay extra for dipping sauces. I didn't get any and glad that I took the gamble. They were that juicy and perfect. Last weekend, my family and I popped by this Popeyes for a quick meal pickup. It turned into a scary experience. I captured several photos of the restaurant store front & the busy interior. However I didn't initially notice there was a mentally ill man eating next to me. Presumably this is one of more affordable spots around. The man muttered at me with a homophobic slur in an upset manner even though my phone camera was never directed at him. Upon telling this man that I didn't appreciate his muttering, he pulled a large pocket knife to show his long blade and committed to charging towards me. That's when I realized the imminent danger and quickly exited the restaurant while no staff took no notice or action. Outside, I tried to de-escalate the situation at which point he went back inside. I was still worried for my family's safety and lingered near the entrance. Fortunately they exited with their order and we quickly drove away but I noticed the black man come out again. Skip it or hit it? I won't be back here if my life depended on it. Literally! Be safe out there in this post-pandemic environment.

If the store is quiet, the chicken is soggy, steamy after pick up. So this is truly a hit or miss. Some of the deals they let you swap out (biscuits for Mac and cheese for example - but for 4 biscuits they give you a small mac and cheese, is it worth it?) Restaurant is fairly clean, it's a fast food store not a Michelin restaurant. Staff are typically pretty friendly every time I visit. Haven't had any issues with them - except when you give me a small Mac and cheese in exchange for 4 biscuits Anywho probably my wife and I's favorite location for Popeyes. Stay crispy.
