And I have a friend who loves libraries. Turns out libraries are great places to work. In the UC Davis library is fantastic. It has more study space than most libraries, even university libraries. It's perfectly laid out. It's immaculately clean. There are plenty of electrical plugs for your laptop. There are rooms where you could have a small gathering and chat, and there are areas where you can study or work quietly . There's a museum exhibit on the main floor with an interesting display related to agriculture and food. Parking on the UC Davis campus is allegedly very easy, as long as you're willing to pay.

Shields Library is a neat library located on the UC Davis campus. It's open to the public. Parts of…read morethe building and elevators feel a bit dated, but that adds to its character and charm. It's a great place to wander around and explore. I loved looking at the collection of old books. There's a lot of space and seating for studying, reading, or relaxing. There are exhibits in the lobby too that were interesting.

The 2nd floor is great for group work while the third floor is great for a more silent environment. Large tables are everywhere and the chairs are slightly padded. I feel like bathrooms are something UC Davis always skimps on. Old buildings always seem to undergo some type of minor renovations but it always excludes the bathrooms. Consequently, the small tiles have gathered decades of grime and filth. It doesn't help that they only seem to be cleaned once a day. There's only a single occupancy restroom for men on the 2nd floor.

Even if it's busy everyone is very quiet, not like Shields with all the chatter. Just not a fan of the computers not being part of the normal page printing. They're a part of repro so you end up having to pay a minimum of $5 even if you want 1 page. They're also extremely extremely slow, I don't think they've updated the computers in over a decade. I just complain because they're the closest to Mondavi and I sometimes have to print and don't want to walk all the way to Olson, it's probably not a problem for most people. I've never used them, but they have legos to play with when you walk in, seems like fun :)

The Friends of the Davis Public Library supports the Mary Stephens branch of the Yolo County…read morelibrary system. Some of their funding comes from memberships ($10-$100 depending on level) but a majority comes from proceeds of book sales. Every other month there is a HUGE book sale in the Blanchard Room of the Davis library. Real bargains can be found, especially it you go on Sundays where a whole bag of books costs only $5. If you are a member you receive a postcard announcing the next sale dates and the card is worth $4 towards your purchase. I've found bestsellers, numerous books on my "must read" list, cookbooks galore, and so much more. The Friends also run the Logos Books store in downtown Davis and have a sale shelf inside of the library.

I was impressed by their children's area!! Gorgeous story mural, fun pirate theme with a life size mermaid and pirate! Lot of books and a big indoor play area!! Our toddler had a blast in their play kitchen with other kids, putting together age-appropriate puzzles, playing with transparent tiles, stuffies, dinosaurs and more! They have great summer reading challenges for kids! For example 1,000 books before Kindergarten. Your child places a spaceship on the library wall to track their progress and earns prizes along the way! if we were residents, we would sign up! I would definitely recommend stopping by and checking out this popular library! Your kids will thank you and the staff are really sweet and welcoming! SYOY! :-)

The library is absolutely gorgeous and is a historic building that has a large green lawn out front and a parking lot out back. It's deceptively large and very welcoming. The staff are super friendly and happy to help!

My 3 year old grand-daughter attends the yoga classes with Miss Gabi and the kids get way more than…read moreyoga. They're taught listening, behaving, taking turns, friendship, appreciation and a calm rarely seen in any 3 year old. The instructor is patient yet firm and in a kind way. I think the kids are getting so much more than just the yoga. This program could be in every schools curriculum and be beneficial!!

It can be a bit loud with chatter, cell phone usage, tutoring, etc. If you can focus on what you're working on with audible distractions it's a great place to go for reading, projects, etc. Otherwise bring ear plugs. There are also comfy cushioned chairs for sitting. There is an information desk in the middle of the room for assistance and suggestions. The bathroom is clean and well stocked. Plenty of parking and restaurants nearby if you need to go eat.

First time I've been to a library that requires you to check in with the police department. I had…read moreto get back in my car drive a few blocks away to the police department which was only labeled by the police cars in the lot. For the new welcoming place for all parking permits it's remarkably unlabeled and not easy to find. Don't go to the main doors of the building go down to what seems to be a lower level area to find the police department. Also write down your license plate number yo save yourself a trip back to your car. I love that everyone just kept saying sorry new rules. Library visits require a visit to the police station. Someone call the firemen.

This review is for FRIENDS OF VACAVILLE LIBRARY (FOVL) operating the WORDS OF WONDER (WOW)…read moreBOOKSTORE located inside this Vacaville Cultural Center Library. The WOW bookstore is open several days per week. It sells donated, used books, CDs, etc., and it is staffed by volunteers. I signed up to volunteer, and was really excited to learn more about donating time to the Book Store and its Board of Directors, as discussed with Volunteer Coordinator Michelle. However my experience when attending the group orientation onsite was met with prejudice and discrimination by Director Cathy. When I arrived for orientation the library staff at the Information Desk directed me to the bookstore located inside and to the right. However the bookstore door was locked. I could see the lights were on and someone was inside so I tapped lightly on the door. Cathy unlocked the door slightly, and looked at me sternly. We were face to face - less than 1 foot apart. I introduced myself, advised I was referred by Michelle, and was there for Volunteer Orientation. Another new volunteer walked up behind me, and said she "was here for the same thing." This volunteer remained about 2 feet behind me. Cathy smiled at her, opened the door wider, reached around and behind me, and shook the other volunteer's hand. Then while looking solely at the other volunteer Cathy told us where to find Michelle and the others (at a table 100 feet away). It was obvious Cathy didn't want to acknowledge, touch or speak with me. The other volunteer was not a woman of color. I am. And since I was clean, well groomed, and well dressed, I can only assume Cathy's indifference and lack of respect was because of a prejudice against women of color. At the very least she didn't feel I deserved the same basic courtesies she extended to the new volunteer standing behind me. Her actions said she didn't value me or my contributions. Shocked by Cathy's overt act of racism I managed to move towards and even participate in the orientation. Alhough I couldn't stop thinking about the way I had been treated. I did tour the bookstore briefly after the group session, at Michelle's urgence. She was excited that I had experience working on and with Boards, and wanted me to meet Cathy. I try to look for the good in people so I decided to give Cathy another chance. However after Michelle introduced us Cathy still didn't give me the greeting she had given my counterpart earlier. No hand shake, no greeting, no smile - just demanded, "tell me (her) about your work history" - with a snarl and superior demeanor. I stopped her interrogation-type inquiry and extended my hand stating I would like to "formally introduce myself." She shook it reluctantly. Still no pleasantries. There was no mistaking that she was speaking with me because Michelle told her someone was interested in volunteering in the bookstore and on the Board of Directors but when she saw it was me she couldn't hide her prejudice, again. I left there knowing I could not volunteer my time or services to an organization whose director looked down upon people and treated them differently because of the color of their skin. I provided feedback to Michelle, and reminded her we are a diverse nation, and expertise and contributions come in all colors. And told her that based on my experience I could not and would not be donating my time or services to FOVL WOW. As long as the Cathy's are in charge here African American or others of color won't be treated with the same dignity and respect. So that's a big no for me.

I used to come here to study often and now I am bringing my toddler here to play. I love the…read moreremodel it's perfect for kids to enjoy time at the library. My toddler was running around the kid section and being a little loud and no one said anything they just allowed us to play and enjoy the space. They also have coloring tables for kids, an assortment of books and computers with kids learning games. There's a nice outdoor area too. We will be coming more often

First thing I noticed that it is very clean, including the bathrooms! It is also very quiet, which is an excellent environment to study in, even without headphones! There are some instance where people decide to talk fairly loud, but that can be ignored if you have headphones in. Each cubicle has their own outlets, so you don't have to worry about your MacBook/laptop battery dying. They also offer free wifi here! I did not have any trouble finding parking, thank God. There are several 2 hour guest parking, which is convenient and FREE! I'm definitely a fan of this library and I'll be utilizing it whenever I'm in the area.

Finding a library that's open on the weekends is tough in Sacramento and EG. Fortunately, this…read morelibrary is open on the weekends. I prefer this library because of its hours, in addition to it being quiet and clean. The only pitfall would be that you have to pay for parking if you intend on staying longer than two hours. The two hour parking is closer to the building, but if you're going to stay longer park in Lot 18 and pay $6 for an all day parking pass. DO NOT park in the parking structure, there's an hourly rate there. For $6, you can come and go as you please. It can get costly if you're going to study everyday, but think of it as an investment towards your future. Tip: The ticket booth is towards the back of the lot. I suggest driving to the booth, have your license plate readily at hand, pay for your ticket, and find a parking spot. Oh yeah, I didn't see any private rooms if you have a meeting of some sort.
