She was super welcoming and shared some fascinating personal background stories of her own history, which added a really unique and personal touch to our visit. ​Highlights of Our Stay: ​The Atmosphere & Vibe: Everything was incredibly elegant, warm, and inviting. ​The Suite & Comfort: Our two-room suite comfortably slept all four of us for our one-night stay. A couple of the beds were on the firmer side, and a few pieces of furniture felt a bit small (almost kid-sized), but it was still a cozy setup. ​The Breakfast: We were treated to a freshly baked morning spread featuring a savory quiche and homemade scones. As a huge food lover, I was genuinely jealous of the massive kitchen--that gas range is a chef's dream! However, I didn't get to snap a pic of it. ​Exploring St. Joseph: ​This part of town itself is overflowing with history. Isobel was so kind to answer all my questions and dive into the history of St. Joe and the house itself, clearly a huge passion of hers. My wife and I stayed in the Romeo and Juliet suite and it was so cozy we had a hard time leaving. I was impressed how clean and functional everything was given the age of the home, Isobel left no detail untouched. Isobel was always available to address our needs. I showed up to breakfast an hour early one morning by accident and that didn't matter, she adjusted for me. The next morning I showed up an hour late to breakfast, when I went downstairs expecting to only have coffee available, she still prepared and served us our breakfast which was so kind and not expected. My only concern before arriving was the location not being very central. Turns out I was wrong. My wife and I could get to any of the restaurants downtown or off Fredrick in 3 to 5 min drive. Everywhere else in town could be driven to within 10min. We'll be back. (PS - Glory is wearing a jacket in photos only because we were on our way out the door. The home was set a very comfortable temperature and our room had an independent thermostat just for us.)

We had a family reunion dinner there, with an amazing fresh salad, hand squeezed lemonade, mashed potatoes, fresh garden picked green beans, chicken and homemade peach ice cream and chocolate cake. William took us out for a hayride and was kind enough to show us their home and beautiful gardens. They'll be moving to Kansas when they sell the place, but I hope they'll find someone else to keep on with the wonderful start they've made.

There were also fans in the rooms to help. Additionally, there was a very cool copper bathtub in our room. The location is great, right by the main stretch near a restaurant and antique shop. Additionally, there is a stash of board games and puzzles for guest use. The breakfast was nice, and included a lot of options. It was a very "country" meal, and pleasantly tasted hearty. It was filling. And if you're hungry, the tavern (about a black away) has GREAT grilled cheese and is open until 1 am :)

Back to our B&B - the host does not live on site but is available 24/7 to help if needed. We stayed in the Estate Room which has a bed and twin daybed plus a private bathroom suite. It was SWEET (intentional). The house is beautiful - with original woodwork and flooring. Plus, very, very comfortable. It is located in town with parking on site. Our hostess made an excellent breakfast of French toast, bacon, fried potatoes and watermelon. I was able to self-serve my Keurig coffee in the morning and sit on the front porch to start my day. Definitely stay here! Security? It's Hamilton, MO. Just be sure you lock the outer doors at night PLUS your room has a combination lock on it too. We had no problems at all.

Before booking a room at Shoal Creek B&B, you should be aware that it is not owner-occupied…read more On page 5 of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Environmental Regulation and Licensure Unit Governing Lodging Establishments, the definition of "bed and breakfast" states that "the owner must live in or adjacent to the building." The owner, Terri Westover, does not live in or adjacent to the building. This is not disclosed on the B&B's website or in the reservation confirmation emails. Westover sent me an email the day I was to arrive, asking me what time I expected to be there. She advised that she would not be onsite and gave me the front door code. She said she would meet me when she came to serve breakfast the next morning. A nice couple arrived the same time I did. They had not received her email because they had been on the road, and they were surprised that she was not there. She had not informed them about the parking arrangements, so they scouted around for a place to park their RV. Once we got inside and toured the place, it was apparent that no one lives there. The bedrooms are all guest rooms. The refrigerator has only breakfast items. This means that when you reserve a room there, you have no way of knowing if you will be staying there alone, or with people you would rather not be alone with. You don't get to decide if that's an acceptable risk. Westover decides for you. When I was there, the other guests were lovely people. Probably all the guests who stay there are lovely people. But it is purely a matter of luck. Westover doesn't know squat about who is at her front door. All she's interested in is your credit card. She left a Hamilton visitors' guide in a nook, but there was no printed information with instructions in case of an emergency. I did not see lighted fire exit signs or fire extinguishers or smoke detectors. If you need to escape from your room, you'll have to jump from the second floor. Whether she changes the door code in between visitors is anybody's guess. There was no visible security apparatus. Someone would only have to break a ground-floor window to gain access to the house. Westover provides her phone number but she did not leave a list of emergency contacts. The nearest ER is in Cameron, 16 miles away. Anything that happens to the house, or to you or anyone else there during the night, you will have to deal with until Westover can get there, which will not be as fast as if she was there already. Since she is almost certainly in violation of zoning and licensure regulations, it begs the question what her insurance would cover in case of theft, damage to property or injury to someone's person. Whatever. There is something furtive about her lack of transparency. Poor hospitality is the best thing I can call it. She is not trustworthy, which is even worse.

The inn is beautiful with four Victorian rooms to choose from and another three French inspired rooms a few doors down. All the rooms have private bathrooms, coffee service, gorgeous furnishings, access to their beautiful gardens, and an incredible breakfast, made by Linda.
