Physical therapy told my husband and I that I would never walk again and stated that I really neededto be trained to live in a wheelchair. To make a long story Short, I am now an outpatient physical therapy. Though I spend time in a wheelchair, I am learning to walk and will be able to do so with a walker independently. Additionally, the medical Director came to my husband and I and told us that I was dying, and should be placed on hospice. that was two years ago. All of my doctors are completely confused as to why he would've came to that conclusion. When we refused hospice, and refused to accept that I could not be taught more independent living, they discharged me. The facility itself is beautiful. It is clean and well-managed. However, they did not provide what I needed from them. Have they done so, I believe that I would be further along than I am now. Again, the good news is that I am progressing dramatically at this point.

It was arranged for her to go to Lorien Mays Chapel. I am writing to tell you that Lorien Mays Chapel was very disappointing and that my mother dramatically deteriorated there. Although they say the right things and have a lot of staff with all sorts of titles, they are really not set up to manage elderly women with dementia. They put her on a vigorous regimen of PT and OT which wore her out and there appeared to be a complete disconnect between their administrative staff like the dietician and their floor staff. In fact, the latter were more concerned about their break times and getting food from the small luncheonette there than with my mother. Lorien Mays Chapel has a good reputation and I think that for relatively healthy young to middle aged men or women who just need a little PT or OT, it is probably fine. However, for older individuals who need more care and attention, in addition to PT and OT, Lorien is not the place to send them. Seeing my mother deteriorate so quickly at Lorien, we managed to get her out of there relatively quickly - weak, very disoriented, and on oxygen 24/7. After returning back to her assisted living facility where they are better setup for her issues, she is much stronger and active again.

She gave me answers to my questions and informed me I would be contacted by my nurse for home therapy. Within 24 hours I had heard from my nurse, Ivy Appelbaum-Sanbank, RN and we worked to set up my five day infusion schedule. Ivy (I called her that after meeting her) arrived promptly the first day at 7:00 am and professionally went through all the paperwork, unpacked all the supplies that had be shipped to me and again, answered a lot of questions. I needed to have a line into my vein and even with my difficult circulatory system,it was accomplished with little or no pain, and it wasn't easy. Ivy stayed with me for the five five hour sessions, carefully monitored my vitals and was a pleasure to speak with. She explained a lot to me and my wife which put our minds at ease. Our family was told how wonderful hospice was, but unfortunately that was not our experience with…read moreGilchrist. My dad was receiving hospice care for two weeks when one night he was singing/interacting with his grandkids when my sister and mom noticed he was getting tired and his breathing became somewhat labored. The hospice nurse came in and said he needed morphine to control his respirations. Both my mom and sister expressed hesitations and concerns. However, in response, the nurse repeatedly stated how much experience she has had with hospice care, and that she has seen "all of this before." He was talked about like he was just another hospice case, rather than a person whose clinical history our family has expertise with. Overnight my dad kept getting his morphine increased. My dad never regained full consciousness, and he was dead two days later. Over those last two days, our family had frequent interactions and conversations with the hospice team, including a nurse supervisor. No one in our family felt heard or listened to. We wanted to stop the morphine to see if my dad bounced back, but the hospice folks told us we should be administering it every two hours, and attempted to shame us into administering it. One nurse insistently argued with my sister about the time of his last dose, even though my sister had spent the night with my dad and recorded every medication and time of administration. We were also promised a chest x-ray that never materialized. The Gilchrist hospice team repeatedly espoused how morphine "gets a bad rap," and we felt as if we were being bullied into continuing its administration. At one point the nurse supervisor said to me "is your dad's comfort not your main concern? Because maybe you should send him to the hospital then." I responded by asking "are you telling me our choices are morphine or the hospital? Because my understanding is that morphine administration is PRN and up to the family's discretion." Once again, during this conversation, my feelings and concerns were not being heard or supported. I just heard about her extensive hospice experience. The focus was on her and the team's experience, instead of my dad/family's wishes and feelings. From what I had heard, hospice's role was to support and guide us through my dad's end of life, but it turned out that 1) our voices and feelings were discounted/ignored, 2) we were strong-armed into adopting their beliefs, and 3) the experience quite possibly hastened my dad's passing. Moreover, no one from Gilchrist was there when my dad passed, and three days have gone by and no one from Gilchrist has reached out to my mother to offer their condolences. I'm sure that others have had a much different hospice experience, but please beware when it comes to Gilchrist.

The team was on top of everything to ensure my grandmother was comfortable and helped my mom and sister support caring for her final days. They handled providing needed medical equipment (and maintenance), navigating administrative processes, providing in-home nurse and health aide care with care and compassion. In a short time, they integrated themselves as family during this difficult time. As our family bids farewell to my grandmother this week, I tip my hat for the love, care, and support the Gilchrist team provided to give her a dignified experience in her final days.
