Physical therapy told my husband and I that I would never walk again and stated that I really neededto be trained to live in a wheelchair. To make a long story Short, I am now an outpatient physical therapy. Though I spend time in a wheelchair, I am learning to walk and will be able to do so with a walker independently. Additionally, the medical Director came to my husband and I and told us that I was dying, and should be placed on hospice. that was two years ago. All of my doctors are completely confused as to why he would've came to that conclusion. When we refused hospice, and refused to accept that I could not be taught more independent living, they discharged me. The facility itself is beautiful. It is clean and well-managed. However, they did not provide what I needed from them. Have they done so, I believe that I would be further along than I am now. Again, the good news is that I am progressing dramatically at this point.

It was arranged for her to go to Lorien Mays Chapel. I am writing to tell you that Lorien Mays Chapel was very disappointing and that my mother dramatically deteriorated there. Although they say the right things and have a lot of staff with all sorts of titles, they are really not set up to manage elderly women with dementia. They put her on a vigorous regimen of PT and OT which wore her out and there appeared to be a complete disconnect between their administrative staff like the dietician and their floor staff. In fact, the latter were more concerned about their break times and getting food from the small luncheonette there than with my mother. Lorien Mays Chapel has a good reputation and I think that for relatively healthy young to middle aged men or women who just need a little PT or OT, it is probably fine. However, for older individuals who need more care and attention, in addition to PT and OT, Lorien is not the place to send them. Seeing my mother deteriorate so quickly at Lorien, we managed to get her out of there relatively quickly - weak, very disoriented, and on oxygen 24/7. After returning back to her assisted living facility where they are better setup for her issues, she is much stronger and active again.

Diane and Sonia were able to support and encourage me through my anxious moments. They provided both physical and emotional support as I adjusted to being home. In addition, all my laundry was done, my bed changed, dishes washed, and my meals were prepared. They both went "above and beyond". I valued their companionship as I adjusted to being on my own. They became like surrogate family members, and I appreciate their caring and kindness above all.

GNA ratios reportedly average 1:15, making adequate patient care nearly impossible. Nurses often appear more focused on congregating at the nurses' station or visiting other units than working together as a team. Cleanliness throughout the facility is subpar, food quality is less than desirable, and basic supplies are frequently unavailable. Families should be prepared for bedridden or two-person assist patients to remain in soiled clothing or bedding for extended periods before receiving help. This environment raises serious concerns about dignity, hygiene, patient safety, and overall quality of care.

When you think of a retirement community you may be one of the people that thinks of a sad place where people are put to be forgotten. That's certainly not the case at all with Edenwald. It felt like a bustling community to me. More than once I thought "I wouldn't mind ending up at a place like this someday." Security wise there is a person manning the front desk at all hours of the day. Ask that person for the guest Wi-Fi password. There is a lobby where you can sit and wait for people where there is also a gift store. I didn't see it but apparently they have a fitness center and pool here. On the activity board they have a listing of all the activities that are taking place on site. They also offer multiple day trips to interesting sites around the area. If you don't want to drive to do errands they will take you places such as Trader Joe's. They have multiple restaurants on site. I got to sample two of them. One of them was a casual cafeteria. The other one was what we called "the pub", which serves alcohol. There is also a fancy pants restaurant across from the pub, but they enforce a dress code. I wasn't doing backflips over the food, but it was much better than I expected and I enjoyed my meals. I thought the nicest thing about the living quarters was that once you go inside and close your door it just feels like an apartment. You have a fully stocked kitchen, which is nice. Even though you have your privacy there are ways in the bathroom and bedroom to alert the staff that you need help. All the amenities in the world wouldn't matter if the people weren't treated right. I have to say I was constantly interacting with friendly people. Multiple times on the elevator the residents would be cracking me up. One man told me that he hoped I wasn't going to the 25th floor because that was his private penthouse. If you have an aging relative who wants their independence but could use the safety/security of assisted-living I can't think of a better place then Edenwald.

They handled providing needed medical equipment (and maintenance), navigating administrative processes, providing in-home nurse and health aide care with care and compassion. In a short time, they integrated themselves as family during this difficult time. As our family bids farewell to my grandmother this week, I tip my hat for the love, care, and support the Gilchrist team provided to give her a dignified experience in her final days. My dad was receiving hospice care for two weeks when one night he was singing/interacting with his grandkids when my sister and mom noticed he was getting tired and his breathing became somewhat labored. The hospice nurse came in and said he needed morphine to control his respirations. Both my mom and sister expressed hesitations and concerns. However, in response, the nurse repeatedly stated how much experience she has had with hospice care, and that she has seen "all of this before." He was talked about like he was just another hospice case, rather than a person whose clinical history our family has expertise with. Overnight my dad kept getting his morphine increased. My dad never regained full consciousness, and he was dead two days later. Over those last two days, our family had frequent interactions and conversations with the hospice team, including a nurse supervisor. No one in our family felt heard or listened to. We wanted to stop the morphine to see if my dad bounced back, but the hospice folks told us we should be administering it every two hours, and attempted to shame us into administering it. One nurse insistently argued with my sister about the time of his last dose, even though my sister had spent the night with my dad and recorded every medication and time of administration. We were also promised a chest x-ray that never materialized. The Gilchrist hospice team repeatedly espoused how morphine "gets a bad rap," and we felt as if we were being bullied into continuing its administration. At one point the nurse supervisor said to me "is your dad's comfort not your main concern? Because maybe you should send him to the hospital then." I responded by asking "are you telling me our choices are morphine or the hospital? Because my understanding is that morphine administration is PRN and up to the family's discretion." Once again, during this conversation, my feelings and concerns were not being heard or supported. I just heard about her extensive hospice experience. The focus was on her and the team's experience, instead of my dad/family's wishes and feelings. From what I had heard, hospice's role was to support and guide us through my dad's end of life, but it turned out that 1) our voices and feelings were discounted/ignored, 2) we were strong-armed into adopting their beliefs, and 3) the experience quite possibly hastened my dad's passing. Moreover, no one from Gilchrist was there when my dad passed, and three days have gone by and no one from Gilchrist has reached out to my mother to offer their condolences. I'm sure that others have had a much different hospice experience, but please beware when it comes to Gilchrist.

July 31 I want to update this review to say that there are…read moreareas that Stella Maris does well. One of those is taking care of her medical needs. The Director of Nursing's office makes us feel very confident with handling her medical needs. Our frustrations are NOT on that level. We do have an issue with the seemingly disconnect between the medical care and what we call the daily living care, like toileting, walking, and dietary. At this time, we are going to keep Mommie at Stella Maris and work with the staff. Hopefully, the actual hands-on staff's day-to-day care will improve. I have increased the star rating and hopefully will be able to increase it to another star as time goes on. JULY 25 Things continue to get worse. Two days ago my sister found my mother soaking wet in urine. Her clothes, the cushion and pillow she was sitting and resting on were soaked with urine. There was even a puddle of urine in the geri-chair she sits in. This means that the aids are not toileting her at regular intervals, and they are not cleaning up the pillows, cushion, or chair when she urinates. We have consistently complained about the aids failing to take her to the bathroom when she calls. The staff, including the nurses, turn off her call light, tell her they will notify her aid, and no one comes back for an hour, oftentimes well over an hour. Mommie calls us frequently because she cannot get anyone to come take her to the bathroom. We believe the problem is two-fold. First, not enough aids. Second, poorly trained aids in terms of the ability to shift priorities. We are very aware that our mother is not the only incontinent resident. But the aids need to be trained on how to manage incontinent residents so they are not subjected to the humiliation of having to sit in urine soaked clothes. Our mother has had frequent urinary tract infections since coming the Stella Maris. While sitting in urine soaked diapers and clothing may not be the only cause of UTIs, that certainly does not help. We asked for a meeting with the Director of Nursing and the Director of the facility. So far, all we've had is a phone call from the floor nurse manager telling us she asked the aids what their process was. We asked her what else she was calling to tell us more than once, and she had nothing to add. First, she should have already known the aid's process. Second, we need to know what's going to be done to make sure this unsanitary, humiliating situation does not continue. Taking care of people with serious health conditions is hard work, but if everyone started from a place of "This could be my mother or father" they would have to treat each resident with dignity, respect, and caring. Unfortunately, that is not the experience our mother is having at Stella Maris.

My father received home hospice care through Stella Maris after being discharged from the hospital…read moreon a Thursday. We were told no nurse or social worker would be available until Monday. During those four days, my mother and I were responsible for all care, including repositioning him and managing his hygiene, despite being physically unable to safely turn him. Repeated calls to the nurse line did not result in meaningful support, and assistance only came after multiple escalations. When my father began actively dying, I contacted the hospice nurse for guidance as he appeared to be gasping for air and in a lot of pain. The nurse initially answered and disconnected the call. When I called back, I was told, "What do you want? I'm busy." When I asked about medication, I was told, "You can't kill him." We were given a medication kit but no written instructions, which made it extremely difficult to manage his symptoms with confidence during a highly stressful and emotional situation. Staff also made comments in front of my father about his impending death in a way that felt inconsistent with maintaining dignity, despite acknowledging that hearing is the last to go. When the nurse arrived after his passing, the first comment made upon entering our home was, "Are you happy now?" (I'm finally here) We were told bereavement support would be available, but no follow-up occurred, and we were unable to reach the social worker. My father chose this hospice in part for its Catholic affiliation, but despite multiple attempts, no priest came to provide last rites. We ultimately had to find one ourselves. This experience was extremely difficult for our family and did not reflect the level of support we expected during end-of-life care. If you want your family member to die with dignity and to be treated like a human being - do not use Stella Maris.
