The Maryland Zoo is not nearly as flashy as the National Zoo in DC, but it is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. It is a small zoo, so you can feasibly see all of the animals in one bisit. The exhibits are well maintained and the animals are surprisingly active. It's not nearly as crowded as larger zoos, so you can easily see the animals and even sit for a moment and watch them. My only complaint is that there is flat admission fee of $33 for anyone over the age of 2. Most zoos and museums have a children's rate, but I think the cost is worth the experience. read more

The Maryland Zoo has potential. It looks like there is a lot of ongoing construction so hopefully they grow into a better zoo. Admission is pricey for what is on view. It does include carousel and train rides though. The zoo had some nice kid-centered exhibits that were fun-namely the bat cave, the tree house/slide, and the goat coral. We enjoyed the penguin feeding. We also saw the elephants being fed. You can get closer to the lions here than in DC. There are rhinos too. Several animals were out of exhibit still "hibernating ". It looks like at one point they had polar bears but not currently. They have flamingos. Walking down from the entrance were several empty and overgrown enclosures. One had a deer in it who I don't believe was a zoo animal. While you can bring food in, there are two places to grab meals with several other stands scattered throughout. We waited about 45 minutes for my kids meals and this lost a lot of time since the zoo closes at 4pm and we arrived around 11:30. Parking is free. We rode the carousel a few times but never made it on the train. The zoo is in what looks to be one of the worst areas of Baltimore. The whole drive there once we entered the city consisted of driving down whole streets where every building was boarded up. With the free DC zoo in our backyard, I can't really justify returning except my kids have asked to return so whether I want to or not, I'll be back. read more

A great zoo. It is paid unlike DC but still quite fun. They have more of the North American and African animals whereas DC is more Asia centered. Maryland zoo is so much fun. My kids are 6 and 3 and we have been having a blast here for years. It always feels like there's something new to explore and entertains us for hours. The zoo is large enough that it can take an entire day or if you just want a short visit, it's easy to breeze past the small things and do the whole thing in just an hour or 2. The zoo is clean, plenty of seating/shade options, so many free activities for the kids, and lots of exciting animals to see. The main sections are Africa, Maryland wilderness, and the penguins with a very small North America section near it. The highlight for us is always the swinging bridges in the Maryland section and seeing the penguins. read more

I love supporting the Maryland Baltimore zoo. We were here for the Wine in the wilderness event. This event was held from 05:30 till 9pm. The admission included seeing a lot of the animals and wine tasting. I was very impressed with the availability of the animals. It was a cool day so they were available. Such cuties. The wine tasting was just so-so. I didn't like that most of the wine tasting was just dry wine. I felt like it should have been a variety of selections. To suit all individuals taste buds. They also had food trucks available. They had a DJ available. This was a really nice event. Just wish they would have more flexibility than only having dry wines available. Some of us like it sweet. We visited the Maryland Zoo on June 25th for the Spring Illumination experience. The setup was sooo beautiful! We arrived right at dusk, and it was the perfect time. There was still enough light to take pictures, and as night crept in, the lanterns came alive. Visually, it was stunning, magical even. My kids were in awe, and honestly, seeing their excitement was the best part. That said... for $68 (three tickets), I was expecting a bit more interactivity, more immersion, more to do... The walkthrough didn't take very long, and while there were a few vendor tables and food options, nothing really stood out enough to make us stay longer or spend more. We ended up eating elsewhere because nothing on-site really pulled us in. It wasn't a bad time, it just didn't feel like a full experience worth repeating or recommending at that price. Would we go again? No. Am I glad we went once? Yes. It gave us memories and beautiful photos, but I'd love to see them expand the offerings and create more interactive value for the cost. read more

Came to the zoo for a special event. I haven't been to the zoo since my kids were little, so I was looking forward to this visit. There was plenty of parking available, all within a short walk to the zoo's entrance. We arrived and once we entered, I was ready to explore. The Maryland Zoo has changed since my last visit. The changes were of course, well needed. During our visit, most of the animals were out and on full display. We saw penguins, gazelles, monkeys, cheetahs, bats, snakes, elephants, giant tortoises, rhinos, zebra, and giraffes, and more! I was disappointed that I didn't see bears, lions, and tigers, but oh well... I was taken back to wonderful memories of my time as a child and the numerous school and personal family trips to the zoo. They had gift shops and places to eat typical zoo fare (hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, popcorn, ice cream, lemonade, etc.) There was a merry-go-round, a train to take you around the zoo, and other rides for purchase. All in all, a nice trip and a great local zoo to enjoy with family and friends. read more

We went to the Maryland Zoo for the first time and had so much fun! There were a lot of areas to walk around and the animal areas all seem to be well maintained and designed with the animals' comfort in mind. The zoo has a lot of educational signs and employees and volunteers are wonderful about giving information about the animals. I love that they focus heavily on conservation. I used to have a negative feeling about zoos, but modern zoos are not the same as the zoos of old (which you can learn about walking through the historic area on the way to the exhibits). I believe they are doing good things here to protect animals that could not make it in the wild and promote safety of species that are endangered. Highlight of the day included getting to wish Sampson the elephant a happy 17th birthday! We loved all of the exhibits. Don't miss the bat cave and reptile area under the giant tree! Overall, this is a cool zoo and it's amazing seeing all of the beautiful animals and walk around the grounds. read more

It's clear if you look at the map of the zoo that the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore isn't huge---and it doesn't claim to be bigger than other area zoos. Comparing it to the DC Zoo (which is part of a billionaire dollar Smithsonian Institution) and saying it's smaller and thus it sucks is not fair. Our December visit was primarily for the Penguin Encounter, and we spent time before and after to explore the zoo. ||||||The Zoo|||||| The parking lot is ginormous and parking is free. The road leading to the zoo is in disrepair (potholes, uneven road, broken pavement) and the surrounding community is pretty dilapidated, trashy, and rundown but what can the zoo do about that? I'm hoping that because of the cold month, not many animals were out for viewing. Many exhibits were closed, there weren't many animals inside the open ones, and there were also permanently closed buildings. There were also not that many food options, and it wasn't easy to find restrooms. More signage and more clear signage would benefit the zoo. We got turned around a few times and wound up not where we expected, and the directional arrows weren't very helpful. There was only one food station open among not that many to begin with, and they were out of many of the items on the menu but had a pretzel, which was not on the menu. The employee didn't seem to enjoy her job---unfriendly and brusque. We ended up buying a yearly membership since it was only $30 more than the cost of two tickets, plus it comes with some perks such as train and carousel rides so it seemed worth it if we go at least once or twice more. We enjoy the zoo, a membership forces repeat visits that ultimately promote walking, the membership cost supports animal care, and it's not too far from home, so we felt that was a greater value. Definitely consider the membership for $100 a year that includes admission for two! ||||||The Penguin Encounter|||||| You also need to buy zoo entrance tickets along with the Penguin Encounter tickets. It was a really fun experience! It started on time, two penguin experts introduced themselves and asked us to wash our hands in a nearby restroom, and then led us behind a gate to an area with ambassador penguins that are accustomed to human interaction, photography, and videography in an up-close and intimate setting. The experts explained how the penguins came to the zoo, their names, their ages, their weights, their personalities, and their unique characteristics. You're seated the entire time in a maximum of 8 people per session (we had 6 others who selected the same time slot as us) on a bench but the space is small so it is definitely intimate. You get to touch them, gently, take as many photos and videos your heart desires, and ask any questions to the experts so it's a learning experience and not just an Instagrammable moment. It lasted about 30 minutes and went quickly! read more

I've been to this zoo quite a few times; albeit in earlier years when my kids were little. Great when you want more than a petting zoo - but not a full-day event. See.. there's a lot to do; but it isn't quite the full variety of the biggest city zoos. Yet, it is great for kids that want to spend 2-3 hours at a zoo - vs. the whole day. At the bottom of the hill is a great kids section with spinning turtles to spin on, a cave with some animals, and a tree slide that you get to from inside the cave. You can feed giraffes. There's a train ride that doesn't pass by many animals, but has fun stuff to see. There's a petting zoo with friendly goats.There are often keeper encounters; we saw a couple. It is downhill at the start, which means when you're tired, it is uphill at the end. Many volunteers to share their experience. read more

I know that this zoo must get compared to the DC zoo plenty but I have to say that I love both so much for different reasons. I think this is the perfect size zoo for one day, you can definitely finish seeing everything before they close and it feels much less crowded. I do wish there were more exhibits that were open and that's partially why I don't mind the ticket prices. Your money is going towards a good cause and helps support the zoo and its animals! This review is purely for a special event they hosted. They did Wine in the wilderness which was such a cute concept! You get to experience the zoo at night with a 21+ crowd and try some new wines. Since I had never been to the Maryland Zoo i was excited about my first experience being in this way. I love that the Zoo is easy to find and had plenty of parking. The staff was so friendly and knowledgable and the exhibits were plentiful. My only complaint was about the spacing of the event. The wine booths were too far apart and there was LOTS of walking in between with no real direction of flow of event. Otherwise i love being able to experience the zoo in this way.n read more

I came to the Maryland Zoo many times before however, this is my first review. I attended the Zoo as a chaperone for my daughter's field trip. All of the animals were so vibrant, full of life and awake. I was so pleased to see the animals not sleeping during the day. My favorite animals were the elephants as they were definitely making out and the flamingos along with the penguins. The carousel was definitely a hit with all the kids. We had a great time. We like the option to take the shuttle bus if we don't want to walk up or down the large hill. Everything was set up and decorated nicely for spring illuminations. This place was great! The zoo was just the right size. It was fairly big but not too big. They had a great assortment of animals, although the African section was built up with a lot of animals and the other areas... not so much. This wasn't a big deal to me because the African section is my favorite part in any zoo. The enclosures are VERY big which was great to see and there was a lot of volunteers around the park who could help you out with where to go, information about animals and more. I never saw such nice, helpful, informative volunteers before at any zoo. The walk around the park was a bit confusing but again, we stopped to ask volunteers and they were able to assist! I didn't buy any food or drinks here but they seemed like they had a decent assortment and I didn't find the prices to be outrageous. My favorite animals I saw were the Chimps. I could have stayed there all day just for that! They were playing and it was just adorable. I loved all the little unique touches they have such as the bus you can sit in above the bears. Such a unique idea! Depending on how you come into the zoo, they have a whole section with abandon old cages that the animals were held in many years ago as well as facts about the zoo's former animals along the way. It was absolutely fascinating. The only downside for me was 2 things. 1) They were having an Octoberfest in one section and it was a pain to find parking. They kept telling us to go where it says "zoo parking" and we probably spent 30+ minutes trying to find this sign. We finally found it when we turned down a road that said, "NOT A ZOO ENTRANCE" in all caps.... apparently, it was after all! and 2) In my opinion, the zoo gift shop has a very small selection of everything. We haven't been in years- so we gave it a try. Druid Hill Park that is by the zoo needs some serious TLC from Baltimore City. The signage within the park to direct you to the zoo could be better. Fortunately, once we made it to the Parking lot, everything significantly improved. I was happy to see they increased the security cameras in the lots. I had sticker shock at the admission price- $33 per person (including kids). I know it's expensive to feed and care for the animals-so I could overlook the price. Plan not to purchase food at the zoo- food prices were insanely high. $10 for a hot dog $6+ for a soda...I'm still trying to figure out who pays $13 for a Truly Hard Selzer... The employees were friendly and the park was well kept. Definitely worth a visit. read more

I'm honestly shocked that the average rating for this place isn't higher. We enjoyed our time at this delightful little zoo. The first impressions were not great. The parking lot, or at least lot C, looks like it should have been repaved twenty years ago and there was litter everywhere. I also was horrified when one of the first things I saw was a row of multiple cages that seemed way too small for many types of animals. It was a relief to realize that all of these were empty and were a historical exhibit back from decades ago when the goal was to display as many exotic animals as possible in as little space as possible. It was especially interesting to see the abandoned elephant and polar bear areas. It was smooth sailing after this and the facilities impressed me. Ironically, while I was initially concerned about space, some of the animals such as prairie dogs and penguins had more than five times the space that my local zoo offers them. I also liked how some of the lemurs/monkeys had long tunnels that allowed them to traverse to different indoor/outdoor areas. I was also surprised at how many volunteers and employees they had in red shirts throughout the park to answer questions and give details. They were everywhere on the random weekday that we went. SCAM ALERT********Do not come here, and DEF Do NOT do the penguin experience. First off, they charge you 60 dollars PLUS 20 dollars for entry to the zoo. I left over an hour in advance to ensure I could be early and not miss my time, but still ended up few minutes late. They then would not let me in OR come another day (I would even be willing to repay the entry fee). I understand if they couldn't let me in, but the fact they only do 2 of these a day and the policy is so strict and they wouldn't work with me at all and allow me to come another day, even at an additional cost I was willing to pay, seemed very disrespectful and not customer oriented. Additionally, the zoo outside this penguin experience was the worst zoo I have ever been to. like legit. almost all of the animals were not in the cages. I would say maybe 30-40% (and that is being generous) were in their pins. I'm not going to bother doing a charge back with my bank, but I did want to warn others. I recommend going to the virginia zoo or the National Zoo if you want to come to one. read more

Another zoo update- some changes: -they've updated the parking lot, so it's no longer a stroller's nightmare, but a smooth easy ride to the gate -they removed the add-ons of the carousel & train ticket costs- so now everyone can enjoy with the ticket price- and oh we have- I think our min is 3 carousel animals & 2 train rides -they are renovating the long beginning of the zoo historical exhibits, so now there will eventually be things to see along the long trek the animal Boo at the Zoo is a fantastic time- so many volunteers helping to hand out candy, run events, put up decor- the kids absolutely loved it- we had so many fantastic photo moments read more

I loved my visit here with a group of Kindergartners I was chaperoning. It was free for me thanks to school funding, but I would gladly pay the admission charge to come again. It's not free like National Zoo, but parking is free and plentiful. You do have to drive through a sketchy area of Baltimore to get here, but once inside the main entrance you will be amazed at all there is to see. The zoo is over 700 acres and I think we walked about 4 miles trying to see as much as we could before our 12:20 departure. Must sees are the Penguin Coast - cuteness overload, and African Journey - who doesn't love big cats, zebras and chimps? You can even feed the giraffes. I love watching the prairie dogs that we observed on our way out. If we had more time and the littles weren't "starving", we could have seen more. It's basically a figure eight trail around the zoo. Luckily we had a beautiful day and my group were on their best behavior. read more

As a dmv local who's only been to the DC zoo, this was pretty nice. It was quite the hike in the sunny weather, but the place felt clean and safe. The highlight for me was seeing the talking bird and the swans/penguins. The walk was a bit confusing, even with the map. I think there should be more clear signs and places for drinks throughout the zoo. The animals were fun to see, gift shop was normal, and the people overall were friendly. The historical cages and old areas for animals were boring and unnecessary for me. You will pass through it to see all the popular animals. read more

I visited the zoo for the first time this week (even though we have lived very nearby in Hampden for three years). I spent a few hours there as a work event, which included a tour led by some zoo staff members. There were things I really liked about the zoo. The staff and volunteers were really friendly and helpful, happy to share information about the animals, the species and their endangered status, and the zoo. The staff did a really great job of talking about what we can all do to help some of the more endangered species that you can see at the zoo (a website you can check to make sure the seafood you're eating is sustainable and not hurting other aquatic species, recycling your cell phones when you get a new one so that the mining operations that mine for a material needed for smart phones don't destroy as much chimpanzee habitat, etc.), which I really appreciated it. I also really enjoyed learning that they house the second largest population of African penguins in captivity (the species is down to one half of a percent of their historic population size). On the other hand, the zoo had some enclosures that I felt were really small for the species living in them (the lions and the cheetah in particular didn't seem to have enclosures large enough for them to run). Overall, it's great that Baltimore has a zoo for kids to visit and learn about wildlife. But it's an average zoo at best (but with above average staff based on my visit). Worth a visit if you have kids that love to see animals and wildlife! But it's probably not a place I'll frequent myself. read more

I prefer the Maryland zoo over the DC zoo any day. First off it's closer to me lol and parking is much easier . This zoo is smaller so much easier to get from one exhibit to the next not as many hills and walking. We happened to visit this time for breakfast with the Easter Bunny in which I think was very well executed. The Easter egg hunt missed for me the kids dumped the eggs collected out in exchange for a chocolate egg I didn't like that. Throughout the zoo for bunny bonanza there were games set up and the cute candy shoots the kids could collect from.... Needless to say we're gonna to Halloween here this year if they have the boo in the zoo for kids I though it was cute.... All the animals were out. Not hiding like they do in the summer ... also they put paper eggs in with some of the animals that had treats in them.... Such a cute idea looked like the chimps had popcorn in theirs.... There's a virtual reality game there and a merry go round .... Not sure if they still have the train but they did use to have that as well. Lots of food stand and snacks throughout .... It's big enough to wander for hours and spend time with the different animals but also small enough for a quick visit to your favorite animals. We love the carousel ride and train ride! I haven't been to the Maryland Zoo in years and I was pleasantly surprised. Let me start by saying there weren't an abundant amount of animals there but I had a great experience here. I would've stayed longer but the way my toddler's personality is setup I had to leave earlier than I wanted. Ordering tickets online was simple, check-in was organized, my only gripe was walking to and from the parking lot with my stroller. I live in Washington DC and am a lover of zoos and animals. I have visited many zoos including the Philadelphia Zoo, National Zoo, ZooMiami, San Diego Zoo, Zoo America, Jerusalem Zoo and more. However, I had never been to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, so I decided to visit, today. Coming into the zoo, there is a large plaza and two nearby habitats housing prairie dogs and another housing birds. To get to the main portion of the zoo, you actually have to walk through the former zoo, which shows off the Victorian style cages that the animals were held in many years ago. There are also facts about the zoo's former animals along the way. The zoo is broken into three sections: Africa, Native Maryland animals and Polar Bear Watch. I loved the Africa section, which has all sorts of great animals including rhinos, zebras, elephants, giraffes, okapis, warthogs and chimpanzees. They have large habitats and are easy to see. The native Maryland animal section was mostly shaded, and had some great animals to look at including river otters and bobcats. There is a large bridge that is really cool to walk over, too. The polar bears sadly moved away, but they still have grizzly bears. However, they were hibernating. The kids zoo here is cute with some nice animals such as sheep, goats and donkeys. Altogether, this is one of the nicest zoos that I have been to and I look forward to returning! read more

Due to Covid-19, you must make reservations ahead of time for this zoo. That being said, a couple in front of us didn't already have tickets, and were just told they couldn't get in at 10 am, but could at 10:30 am. The trams were not running from parking lot to zoo, so wear your walking shoes. The day we were there the weather was beautiful, so it didn't matter to us. We went on a Sunday, and it was surprisingly crowded. To be honest, I was disappointed in the amount of animals we saw. Some the zoo advertises it has, but for whatever reason were not out and about: polar bears, brown bears, zebras, chinchillas, leopards, swans, vultures, etc. Of the few animals we saw, my favorites were the baby chimpanzees, Maisie, Lola, and Violet. But each group of guests is only allowed a total of 5 minutes in the chimpanzee house, so take pictures quickly! I also enjoyed watching the penguins during the penguin feeding. In summary, if you want to pay $22/adult to take a walk on a nice day and look at a few animals, this is the place for you. But if you can get to the Smithsonian's National Zoo in D.C. instead, which is free, you will see far more animals there, and a wider variety too. read more

It's with sadness that I have to write a somewhat critical review of the zoo this time around. Although my family and I have been members for about four years, changes made on July 1 2024 has really sunken how I feel about the zoo. To start, the prices for the zoo have skyrocketed. The membership my family and I used to have, which was $165 per year as of April 2023 when we renewed, is now $300. Regular daily zoo tickets are now $33 per person. There is NO children discount if the child is older than one years old. They justify the costly increase by saying that that families get free access to the train ride (which the train ride is a slow and strange ride that doesn't actually overlook any animal exhibits) and the carousel is badly in need of refurbishment (it's a very jerky ride because the gears get stuck on every rotation). They also raised prices again on all food items. For example: the Bavarian pretzels which were overpriced at $8 are now $9. The chicken tenders, which was all ready outrageously expensive at $14 for TWO tenders and fries, is now $15. And their stuffed animals in gift shops have all increased in price by $5, with all of them costing $25 or more. A standard hard featuring the zoo logo is now nearly $40 with tax. The zoo leadership clearly believe they should be price gouging their patrons. Furthermore it honestly seems like their new pricing is openly antagonistic towards guests, viewing them merely ATMs. It's upsetting since the zoo is located in the Druid Hill area which is a non-affluent area. These price rises makes it seem like a goal of the zoo administration is to ensure that people of low-socioeconomic backgrounds can't come to the zoo. This is unfortunate because the general zoo staff are, by and large friendly and awesome. What's more frustrating is that there is no clear explanation for where the money they are taking from customers are going. When you enter the zoo, they still lead you into the "old zoo", which is a mostly empty quarter mile stretch of land with nothing in it. It's sad because they honestly should just tear it all down and rebuild. That much land good be put to better use. I still consider the zoo a friendly and wonderful place for families. Who doesn't love the zoo? It has easy parking and so much of it is outside, which is great for COVID precautions. Be prepared to walk a bit from the parking lot to the animals though. Ticket prices are reasonable and I definitely recommend the penguin encounter for a fun extra! Overall it's a great way to spend an afternoon. One thing unfortunately I don't recommend is the zoo lights around Christmas time. It was very short and not that impressive for the cost. read more

After speaking with the Senior Director of Sales for the Maryland Zoo, I feel a lot better. She addressed our concerns and apologized for our experience. She is new to the zoo, seven months in, I see a lot of good things coming to the zoo with her in a leadership role. Because of the positive second interaction, we are still considering the Mansion Porch House for our wedding venue. Hopefully Covid participates and allows us to move forward. The space really is beautiful and unique. read more

I really like this zoo. I have no complaints. I have lived in NOVA my whole life and never knew it was there. And the two days after visiting the 9 people I've spoken to, also have never heard of it. What a nice hidden gem. A friend asked me if it was a "real zoo". Yes. It has real animals and everything. Polar bears. Elephants. Lions. Giraffes and more. The setup is nice. A couple trails that go around in a couple circles. They definitely have a lot of land if they wanted to add stuff. Maybe my only complaint is they should have more signs for what I'm looking at. Maybe some more info. But I like exploring new zoos and seeing animals that others do not. DC does not have polar bears or rhinos or giraffes. I appreciate the different variety. read more
