NEVER GO HERE. At 6'7", finding a good fitting suit is difficult. I haven't purchased a new suit in 15 years due to this reason. Therefore I got a new suit made for me at an amazing tailor in Chapel Hill (thanks Julian's). Unfortunately, due to timing, I was not able to use them for alterations. I live in a small town and thought I'd like to take the alterations to a "professional" location in Asheville. Therefore I took the suit to Mary's based on the great recommendations here. I asked for the pants to be CUFFED, fairly simple request. I was told they would be ready to pick up 1 week later. I got a call asking me to come 2 days later. When I arrived my pants were not done. I arrived tonight to pick up the pants on the way to a major meeting to find that they WERE NOT CUFFED!!! The owner looked at the ticket, said "oh, sorry" and then told me there was no way to correct it (since the remaining fabric was in my pocket). The hemming job is adequate. Honestly, they took the time to kneel on the floor and mark my pants with chalk but couldn't get my request straight?? This is a lot different than overlooking my steak, I doubt they are buying my a new suit. Of course, they still charged me for the service of messing up my custom order suit. read more

I came in with a short timeline and a bridesmaid dress in need of alterations, they took care of me and it fit like a glove. At a terrific price if I might add as well! Stopped in to see if they could fix a zipper on a bag the "new American" had damaged. After a short wait (as they were very busy!), they fixed in 5 minutes flat, and DIDN'T CHARGE ME. Granted, it took just a few minutes, but would have happily paid at least $5 or so, because they saved me from having to get a new one. Great service, will definitely go back! read more

Very slow when fixing my prom dress and they inconsiderately made me wait for a long time in the waiting room without even acknowledging me for 30 minutes. The price was also more than I had agreed to. Will not be returning. read more

I alter all my vintage clothes and new clothes here. I alter all the pants I buy, since I have to have them hemmed and taken in at the waist. Mary's Magic always takes in the waist perfectly and matches the thread well for those expensive fancy jeans. This is the best place in town to have alterations done. I'm picky and have been to other places in Asheville and this is by far the best place. Big city skills in a small city. read more

I am new in the area, so I was a little nervous bringing in several pricey things to be altered for the first time...They did an amazing job, and I have always had to have things tailored, so I believe I know quality work when I see it. I brought them six pairs of designer denim to be hemmed, they kept all the original hemlines and matched the thread perfectly, I also brought a vintage blouse in to be taken in and again they matched the pattern and thread perfect, I am so pleased, and I will definitely use them in the future. I found them on yelp and sometimes you have to take reviews with a grain of salt, but the person who reviewed them before me was right on, and I'm super grateful. read more

So pleased with the work I had done here! I had a bridesmaid dress that was so tight that I would need to remove a few ribs to be able to take a deep breath. It took forever for the dress come in, so I was on a time crunch and worried that it wouldn't be able to be let out in time, or that it would be let out and the shape of the dress would be changed. I had no need to worry! They had it ready for me in exactly one week, I can breathe and even zip it with no assistance, the shape of the dress is exactly like before, and it was $40 total. I am so impressed with the kindness, speed, and quality here. Would absolutely recommend taking anything you need altered to Mary's. read more

Mary IS magic! When I first moved here, I asked a trusted cousin where to go for fine alterations. I sew, but don't enjoy alterations. Bless my cousin for sending me to Mary! Since then, I have been fortunate to have Mary alter for me and tailor for my husband as well. Most memorably, she altered my wedding dress significantly. The result was exceptional - it fit like a custom couture gown when she was done. She has remade a size 16 to fit my size 10... and all sorts of other challenging tasks. On the one occasion when the fit was not quite right at pick-up, she generously insisted that she rework it... and it was ultimately perfect. There is a small sign in her shop that says something like, "trust me, I know what I'm doing". It is spot on - she DOES know what she's doing... and you SHOULD trust her! Mary IS magic! read more

I needed a quick hem for a wedding I was attending. Mary hemmed my pants quickly and for a great price. I wish I lived closer to Weaverville, I'd take her everything! read more

So I gave them 2 wks to hem a few pairs of pants. Took a while to locate and not ready. We're gracious and got them done quickly. I know they must be incredibly busy but still very frustrating. Maybe a better system or something would help. Will not go back though they do seem like very nice folks and surely have loyal customers. read more

They get the job done....not on time. And not very friendly or gracious. They stomp around the shop like they have a chip on their shoulder because they had to do work and now they have to find your clothing. Then two of the workers had an argument right in front of me and was jerking clothing out of each others hand. Will NOT be back. read more

I am not impressed with my three visits in to Mary's alterations. Nothing good to say except that the button has stayed on my pillow, so the easy sewing request was done well. What lacks is customer service. I just didn't see any out of three visits- no greeting, no smiles, no going beyond to see if the customer is happy . I had to call and check up on my pillows both times I left one there for button attachments, and neither call produced any sort of apology or concern for the lack of letting me know my pillow was ready . When I picked up the second pillow, it looked like it had been laying in a lint trap for the 2 1/2 weeks they had it. I'd rather go somewhere that shows a little concern and effort to get you back as a repeat customers. read more

The 3 pairs of pants weren't tailored by the promised time and when we picked them up (three hours late), they were hemmed but the waist wasn't tailored so they were unwearable. Two trips to Mary's and the pants and the job wasn't complete. Now I have to go somewhere else to finish the job. Not good. read more

I took a skirt in to receive a new hem. While I was seated at my desk in the kitchen, my long skirt on the floor, I didn't notice the puppy was chewing on the hem as he was contentedly lying there, curled up in my skirt. Took it in and it was ready fast, and honestly looked good as new and even and just like nothing had ever happened to it. I love this skirt and I'm tall, so knocking an inch or two off the bottom was not even noticeable. Very affordable. read more

Brought a bridesmaid dress in to get a simple alteration, just needed a simple hidden hem on the neckline. I was told it would be a unseen hem and you would not be able to tell it was there. However, upon picking my dress up, I soon found out it was very much visible. The thread they used to hem the neckline was gray and very evident as my dress was a red wine color. The woman attempted to fix it but it just made matters worse. I would not recommend this for even the most simple of alterations and especially any large alterations. read more

Two week wait time to fix a zipper, I went to pick it up two weeks later and it wasn't done. Mary told me to wait ten minutes while she fixed it right then, charged me $6 and she completely missed the edge of the zipper flange! read more

Excellent and skilled alterations place. Small shop located upstairs in a modest brick building on Merrimon Av. They must do hundreds of wedding dresses each year so expect delays during "wedding season." Worth whatever wait you experience. read more

Took an a-line formal dress for hemming, when my husband picked it up, he was charged $40. This seems excessive to me. I should have asked for a price quote when I dropped it off. Otherwise the service was fine. read more

I went to Mary's for the first time to have a pair of slacks fixed. Everyone in the store was standing around admiring and talking with a young lady wearing her informal wedding dress and chatting. It took 5 minutes before one lady said someone would be with me shortly, then they all went back to talking. After another 5 minutes I left. I would not call them client focused. read more

Mary IS NOT Magic! I dropped off several items to be hemmed and was given a two week promise date. I went in a few days after the promise date to find my items were still waiting to be attended to. I understand that this is a busy season but a phone call would have been nice. I waited another two weeks, still not ready. It took six weeks to get my items! I checked in every week. They did a descent job on the alterations but provided very poor customer service. No apology just a very substantial bill...very disappointing. read more
