    Jean d'Cancale - Yummers!

Fresh oysters on the boardwalk for breakfast! Yummers!…read more A French friend insisted we have fresh oysters for breakfast since we were at St. Malo, about a 30 min drive away. I was a little skeptical, but heck, I'm in France, and if this is a French thing to try, why not??? So we made the drive, found a paid parking lot near the pier, then took a short walk along the boardway & pier to this place where several vendors have set up tents with trays of different kinds of oysters. All the oysters are from the sea in Cancale - and VERY fresh! So we picked some trays of different varieties, paid cash, and they shucked it open on the spot, provided lemons to squeeze onto the oysters and napkins to wipe up, and we were off! There is a limited amount of table and seating nearby, so if you're lucky, you park yourself in the open air and enjoy your oysters. So very fresh, they are still alive when shucked, full of different flavors.... I was glad I accepted the breakfast invitation! After you're done, you take your tray with the empty shells, remove the lemons and napkins, and just throw the shells onto the beach nearby. Then you toss the lemons and napkins into a nearby trash receptacle, return your empty tray to the vendor you purchased your oysters, and all pau! So... fresh oysters for breakfast - I fully endorse it! Bon appetit!

Parking is free before a certain time and is pretty reasonable once it becomes for pay. When you get there, you are greeted by 4-5 oyster stands all carrying different sizes and types of oysters. I chose a DOZEN wild large oysters which were shucked and lemons provided for a total of 6.50 Euro. WTF? It costs like $3 plus tax and tip per oyster at most oyster bars here in San Francisco!! Anyhow, you just sit at the picnic table next to the market slurping down your freshly shucked oysters and frisbee throwing the shells into the ocean whence they came. The oysters were full of briny flavor - more than some of the high end oysters here in the Bay Area. Mind you, I had this at 9 am for breakfast.. maybe a bit hardcore for some people but I loved it haha.. Basically, if you're an oyster fan - do yourself a favor and come here if you're in the area. I think it's definitely a secret gem that most tourists don't know about.

We actually wanted to go back our last night here, but didn't, it was that good. One of the popular menu items in the area is oysters. You can't find any more fresh than this! My husband and I were with another couple, and ordered oysters, mussels, fish soup and white fish (merlu). It was the prix fixe menu where you get three courses for one price. It was a bargain for what we got. Food was delicious! Everything was cooked perfectly and flavorful. The wine was as good as the dinner. In fact, when we got back to the US we looked for the same wine we had here and couldn't find it. My husband and I highly recommend this restaurant!

This seems like a family run establishment. The inside feels like you are on a boat. Now on to the juicy details. When in Brittany one must get some seafood. We sure got out share with a seafood platter, Cancale oysters, and house smoked salmon. On the appetizer platters you get 2 oysters, 4 shrimps, periwinkles, snails, and mini shrimps. I really liked the periwinkles. For the mains we got charcroute of the sea which was sauerkraut with fish and shrimp which was surprising delicious. We also tried the lamb dish which was tender and seasoned to perfection! Lastly we tried the mussels which were savory and tender! Dessert came with our meal. We were disappointed in the Cream Caramel. The crepe was good. But the real star was the kourig amann with buckwheat ice cream! YUM!

We took the "seafood platter for 2" at 95 euros and ended with one crab each, a dozen oysters, lots of clams, small and big sea snails and grey shrimps - the owner warned us that there wasn't any langoustine because of the weather, and he added more of everything else to compensate. That was fine and can be expected when dealing with fresh products ;) They offered us a small appetizer of fish mousse; we had the seafood platter as main course; then we had desert (3 fruits sorbet for my wife, chocolate profiteroles for me) and an espresso each. Add a champagne glass for aperitif, a glass of White Muscadet wine with the seafood and a bottle of carbonate water and the bill was less than 150 euros! You won't see this kind of price with this kind of food on the West Coast, sadly... Overall, the place was packed for dinner (we had a reservation) but nice and quiet. Both locals and tourists enjoyed their (great) food in a very relaxed setting.
