Ma's Loma Cafe is a real hidden gem in the middle of Montana big sky country! We stopped into this spot in Loma, MT completely by chance while visiting the nearby American Prairie preserve, and we were delighted by the whole experience. The atmosphere is pure, authentic Montana--warm, welcoming, and full of local character. For a restaurant in this outback town, Ma's Loma Cafe is punching above its weight. The people were friendly, the coffee fresh and endless, the waiter attentive, and the atmosphere fun and very Montana. As for the food, it was much better than your usual small-town diner fare. The burgers were juicy and cooked perfectly, and the BLTs were loaded and delicious, homemade potato salad like grandma's. The real surprise, though, was their variety of Mexican food. They make all of their own, including salsas on-site, and you can really taste the Mexican flare. This was a great place to stop and eat lunch along the way as we were traveling through on motorcycles. Someone had recommended this place a couple of months ago that used to live in the area. Their iced tea and ranch were both homemade and they were awesome. I had breakfast there, and it was done to order. Staff were friendly and helpful and lots of things to look at in that place for fun. Also took a gander at the local newspaper, which is always interesting as you traveling through areas. read more

Ma's is worth the drive from Great Falls. We shared the XL burrito which was gigantic and delicious. We had sour cream lemon pie for dessert and it was excellent. It's not a fancy place and the food is great. read more

Good food but don't ask for the milkshakes that are listed on the menu. The waitresses are very clever with their excuses on why you can't get one. Last time we were there we were told we couldn't get one - oddly enough the table next to us, served by a different person was able to get two. Right in front of us!!! One of the best sandwiches I have had...the house special was hot and juicy and served quickly. My wife is celiac so a hamburger steak and baked potato with salad and ice cream was perfect. We would definitely come more often if it wasn't a 4hr drive....we did catch a few fish at the bridge and that made the trip well worth while for a Father's Day outing. read more

We were headed to Whitefish on the train a few weeks back, when we got word the tracks were closed at the pass due to the wildfires. Not wanting to subject ourselves to whatever alternative transportation options Amtrak would scrape together, we rented a car in Havre and lit out on our own. It was already evening, and we were planning on spending the night in Great Falls (The Electric City!), but hunger demanded our attention. Now there's not much between Havre and Great Falls, but a few folks recommended Ma's in Loma and said that since it was Thursday, it was Mexican night. We had a dinner plan. We both got the special -- beef fajitas plus the soup and salad bar. Great prices, super tasty (the chile verde soup is something I'm going to try to recreate), guacamole, chips, and a decent beer selection. Can't say we'll likely be in Loma again in the near future, but if we are, we're stopping at Ma's! read more

Stopped by Ma's Loma Cafe with some friends from Big Sandy. The cooks were tasked with preparing roughly 15 meals that ranged from bacon wrapped filet mignon to a philly omlet. All the meat was pulled fresh from a large refrigerator in the front of the store and the portions were well worth the cost. Despite the remote location of the restaurant, this place served up one of the most flavorful Ribeye Steaks I've ever had. If you're ever passing through Loma and looking for a good meal, I'd recommend stopping by. read more

Unimpressed. Had high hopes but food not only took forever to come out, it wasn't prepared right. Our steaks were over cooked. Wanted steaks medium and there was no pink! Staff was nice. Might look into cooking classes for the chef. read more

Great country cafe on the highway between Great Falls and Havre. The owners Greg and Maria along with their son Lester put out a great product. I had their fried chicken which was probably the tastiest I've had in awhile and my wife's burger was pretty amazing with a hand formed party that seemed to be at least 3/4 a lb if not bigger with some really nice nice nice bacon. Sure a lot of their side items are things like tater tots or fries from their distributor but the important stuff like the main dishes are homemade and excellent among their genre. I am excited to try Mexican night at some point and in weekends you can get a nice charbroiled steak. Their wine and beer selection is above par for a highway cafe and the decor is understated but clean and nice looking like they have been doing some renovations. The meal was surprisingly good, and refreshing as I've been disappointed so many times by little joints that should be good but have at some point given in to doing a premade menu. This will be a new hangout for us when we crave a diner meal or a slice of amazing home made pie, oh yeah I forgot to mention the pie...... Great, the German chocolate pie was pretty much amazing unique and very very rich. Thanks again to the owners for a great experience. read more

Stopped here on Saturday while staying in Fort Benton at the Canoe Campground. This is a real mom and pop's type restaurant. We came in around 2:30 pm. Hostess/waitress was very friendly. Asked what the best thing on the menu was and she said the hamburgers, since the buns are made fresh daily in house. Instead I already had my mind made up for mexican food, so I ordered the Burrito XL and my husband got the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and Onion Rings. Neither of us were disappointed. Both were very tasty. But I must say, my favorite part was the Chocolate Peanut Butter Slice of pie that I got and the Sour Cream Lemon. Definitely worth it. Plus on Thursday nights they have Maria's Mexican Food Night...and since moving to Montana from California, we have not had real authentic mexican food, so we are excited to come back again and try this. read more

My husband & I were headed home from a long day in Great Falls, Mt. We are usually in a hurry to get home, not this day thank goodness. We stopped in at Ma's and had dinner. What a great decision. My husband ordered the Shrimp Kabob and I had a hamburger-no fries. His kabob consisted of a shrimp taco as an appetizer, salad bar, shrimp kabob on a bed of Spanish rice and carrot cake for dessert. Everything was fabulous!!!!! Oh and on the way to Great Falls we stopped in for a piece of their homemade pie which there were several to choose from. Sour cream raisin pie.....yummy!! Huge, juicy burgers on fresh buns. Hot, crispy fries. Some of the best home-baked pies around. Quite possibly one of the finest diners in Montana. Nothing fancy here; just friendly (but not fast) service and great diner fare at a more-than-reasonable price.
