order of pork belly
Kurt P.

Dinner for 15 last week. We were only available after they closed for the day, but with advanced notice they were kind enough to open up just for us. For that kind of customer service alone they get 5 stars. I thought I'd try something different and had the catfish. It was incredibly crunchy, nice and moist. The slaw and sauce were great! The big hit of the night was the couple that ordered a double sampler plate (pictured). I think all 15 of us ended up eating off that plate. Their brisket really is wonderful, and I make my own... Overall we had a great time and really appreciated the staff for coming in after hours to accommodate us.

Another great Friday night at the Union Grille. My NY strip was cooked perfectly--adding the shrimp made it a great surf and turf dish. Service as always was top-notch. Next month they begin serving mixed drinks too!

I've been to the Union Grille 3 times over the past year and haven't left disappointed. Appetizers are always delicious and the entrees are cooked well and are fantastic! The vibe and food here is not something to miss. So good!

Pork chop dinner.

Wonderful dinner and great service. I had the pork chop which was cooked to perfection. GF had the fish and chips, similarly prepared. We finished with a huckleberry ice cream dessert and decaf French press coffee. Stacia took good care of us. As we were close to the kitchen, we got to see what others we're ordering, and it all looked excellent. We stayed in the hotel, so enjoyed the included breakfast in the morning.

Montana Cheese plate & trout hush puppies

Though the location seems to be out of the way and off the main road, the Union Grille is nestled right next to the Missouri river. There is a little walkway and then an old bridge over the Missouri that you can take a walk on. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the historic Union Hotel. It's appeal is music and somehow old fashioned but in an alluring kind of way. The ceiling is the old tin type with old fashioned designs. The seating area is dimly lit for an intimate setting. A reservation is HIGHLY encouraged! The staff are kind and attentive. We started with the Montana cheese plate and trout hush puppies for the appetizers. The Montana cheese plate was amazing. All cheeses are locally made. Each bread and jam complimented the plate well, not taking away from the delicate cheese flavors. The trout hush puppies were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The trout taste was delicate but up front. For the entrees we ordered the hanger steak (absolutely tender and amazing, well cooked and seasoned) and lamb chops which were cooked perfectly, they were not gamey or tough. The meal and the atmosphere is perfect for a small intimate gathering or a great date night. The dessert was rich and delicious and the flavors played on each other. Who thought lemon curd and rhubarb/strawberry tart would go together? So good. We ended the night with a stroll along the lit bridge I mentioned prior. Absolutely a delight. 1000% go again. Highly recommend.

Oh my. This was worth the two hour drive from Helena. Every single thing we ate was amazing, from the appetizers to the entrees.

We stopped into this…read morespot in Loma, MT completely by chance while visiting the nearby American Prairie preserve, and we were delighted by the whole experience. The atmosphere is pure, authentic Montana--warm, welcoming, and full of local character. For a restaurant in this outback town, Ma's Loma Cafe is punching above its weight. The people were friendly, the coffee fresh and endless, the waiter attentive, and the atmosphere fun and very Montana. As for the food, it was much better than your usual small-town diner fare. The burgers were juicy and cooked perfectly, and the BLTs were loaded and delicious, homemade potato salad like grandma's. The real surprise, though, was their variety of Mexican food. They make all of their own, including salsas on-site, and you can really taste the Mexican flare. If you are traveling through Loma or exploring the American Prairie, do yourself a favor and pull over at Ma's Loma Cafe. Great food, wonderful people, and an inviting local feel.

Someone had recommended this place a couple of months ago that used to live in the area. Their iced tea and ranch were both homemade and they were awesome. I had breakfast there, and it was done to order. Staff were friendly and helpful and lots of things to look at in that place for fun. Also took a gander at the local newspaper, which is always interesting as you traveling through areas.

That's being said we went on a Wednesday which rotates their steak dinner. Ribeye / New York / Prime Rib. Delicious. The service was great as they went above and beyond. When making the reservation and yes on a Friday you need reservations as they need to know how much steak is required to serve its customers. I took my wife on our anniversary and simply asked if they could make it special. She did and it was beautiful. Thank you for the special time. I recommend this to get out of town and small town hospitality.

We walked in and no one was there, but Sherry and a gentleman at the bar. They were friendly and place was clean and comfortable. She gave us internet password so we could reach our friend as cell service is poor in the area. In meantime, another baseball family saw our car and stopped. Sherry accommodated all of us as we came and went and was so pleasant and helpful. The food was great! Kids with grilled cheese, mini pizza and multiple Shirley temple requests. Adults had burgers, BLT, adult grilled cheese (with bacon). Side green salad and macaroni salads were great (macaroni salad was indeed especially good with secret sauce and not too heavy). By the time we left, the bar filled in and the conversation between locals and those of us passing through was like one big open room of friendly people learning about each other. We all took a gamble at the Shake a Day and were feeling content with meal and entire experience. The Highwood community clearly is made up of special, hard working, friendly people. Elmos is the kind of place I will plan in to our travels now. We look forward to steak night some time!

To start with, the Frontier Bar & Supper Club is a perfect example of what a best kept secret looks like! The outside may be old, but the inside is busy & full of life. We quickly realized that this was a hometown favorite where the locals go. I think everyone in the dining room knew each other! There's the dinner side & the bar side. Hubby & I arrived at 6:00 pm for dinner (glad we were told to make reservations!). We were quickly greeted by nice gal who seated us right away. Our waitress, Ellie, met us at our table as we were still getting settled. She told us she was new, but she handled our orders & everything else like a pro! The food was extremely generous, fairly priced & delicious! Soup of the day was Shrimp Chowder. It has ruined us from ever wanting CLAM chowder again! It was so good! We asked for to-go boxes so we'd have enough room for dessert. Ellie recommended Lava Cake as her favorite so we went with that. Great choice & I'm glad we split it! (Check out the photo!) We don't get to visit family often up here, but this discovery will always be on our list!

Amazing food and exceptional service. Great atmosphere. Highly recommend! Great place for families,…read moregroups, and company dinners.

First, the setting. What a delightful interior once you get past the rather understated exterior. Comfortable spaces, open, airy, not loud but full of sounds of people enjoying themselves. Second, the service. They are on it, immediately. But you never feel rushed. Instead, you feel welcome and valued. Third, the food. I the relish tray--once a mainstay of Montana steakhouses. But this one has hot, creamy cheese dip. And beets! (Well it is eastern Montana). The steaks? Just one of the top 3 New York strips that I have ever savored. PERFECTLY cooked and so so tender. Unbelievably good. Also loved you can have hashbrowns as a side. And my friend loved the rolls plus the halibut. Drinks? Certainly. A decent wine list. Lots of local brews. And well balanced cocktails. Quality is top notch, the quantity is there. The prices are fair, considering everything. What a place!!

Our table of four had one wrong entre delivered that was sent back. Two wrong drinks delivered. One sent back. The salads were large and really good. Bread was served with way too-sweet butter. For the price the prime rib was a bit thin. My med-rare looked so good but was tough and tasteless, which really surprised me. The calamari/onions tasted good but was rubbery. Was with great company so there was no complaining at the table. We enjoyed the place so I would go back and try something different, maybe on a quieter night. To compare, we had amazing, perfectly cooked tender and delicious prime rib the following night in a small town tavern for much less $$.
