On the east coast for the holidays, and I couldn't stop staring at my husband's cousin's lashes....man, she won the genetic lottery with those puppies. All I can say is that my extensions are the single greatest make-up related investment I have ever made (and I have spent a TON of money on make-up). Masami worked on my hair and make-up for my wedding in Napa, California, and I LOVED the whole experience! I went for the eyelash extensions and I'm glad I did it. She came over to my house a couple of days before the wedding for the eyelash application. I spent a week on the beach for our honeymoon and didn't even have to wear any make-up other than sunscreen because my "fake" lashes looked o-so-fabulous! Even if you are not getting married, get the eyelash extensions. It's the best beach makeup. I don't have thick hair but I grew out my hair for the wedding, and Masami created this illusion of volume by using "anko" (must be an ancient Japanese secret!) in my hair. I'm part Asian so Masami definitely knows how to work with Asian faces. The makeup looked natural and she somehow gave me that "pink blushing bride glow" instead of making me look like a Geisha. For my birthday I treat myself to one high priced service. One year a tattoo, another a spa day. This year I wanted to get eyelash extensions and I trusted my fellow Yelpers to light the way. A few years back I had gotten an eyelash perm which didn't produce the intended results. My eyes had mini afro puffs on them, so I was wary about getting them Kim Kardashian thick. I love Masami. I get eyelash extensions done by her and she does a fantastic job at about a 3rd of the price of salons (about $80 total for two sets of 25 lashes on each eye). She takes her time and is meticulous. The extensions actually look natural (altho I'd recommend going with the 8/10mm combo rather than the 13mm, unless you want to look like an anime character). Since I have no skill with an eyelash brush or a curling iron, I hired a hair and makeup stylist for my wedding. Masami was perfect for the job and reasonably priced. Responsive to email, prompt for our appointments, very friendly. She also does eyelash extensions and hair extensions if you need such services, but I went pretty simple for my wedding, so didn't use them. I have been wanting to get eyelash extensions for some time (I am one of the lucky ones who have the straight, short, asian lashes - yet all the men in my life have long, thick curly lashes) and was worried when I heard all of these horror stories about crappy extension jobs. This review is long long long over due. I first started researching eyelash extensions after having seen them on my cousin about 3 years ago. I know...really long overdue. I happened upon the Novalash website and looked for consultants that were in the Contra Costa area. This is before I knew what Yelp was! I called to get pricing from Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Concord, and Alameda. Masami had a website that had a complete profile of her extensive experience, and even though she was a little further out from Pittsburg, I called her anyway. She had really affordable pricing. It was more than 50% less than the other places I called and her suggestion for when to retouch was longer out. She was able to fit me into her schedule even in the middle of her hectic move. Masami is a pleasant woman to talk to and she makes you feel very comfortable on her worktable. She was able to complete my first set in less than 2 hours. I was so extactic with the results! Beautiful long eyelashes. She even educated me on how long the lifespan is of eyelashes, when and how they grow seasonally, and what types of hair take better to extensions and so forth. I showed off my new lashes to my girlfriends, and one girl immediately was surprised that my eyes were not red and burning. She thought that was the norm!!! Her sister had gone to someone and had this horrible problem for a week after she got hers done. I assured her that whoever she went to did not do it right and may have gotten glue in her eyes. For Masami's expertise, you really can't beat her price. Not only a skillful application and affordable, it's also convenient - Masami will come to your place for a $10 travel fee. I went to Sephora a few weeks after getting my extensions to buy some makeup, and one of the sales ladies was helping me by trying some products on my face, and after almost 1/2 hour of applying different foundations to my face, she was like "I can't stop staring at your eyelashes - they're so long and beautiful - I'm jealous - you definitely don't need mascara." Masami is great. I had her doing my makeup and hair for my wedding ceremony and banquet, which were on two separate days. And she gave me two completely different styles which were appropriate to the different venues and events. I cannot believe how much compliments I received. Masami's so sweet & personable and she's very meticulous. For enhancing eyelashes, I prefer the extensions over using Latisse. The upkeep is less expensive considering the cost of 1-month's worth of Latisse. I don't have to remember to put the medicine on every night. I don't need to spend time curling the lashes or applying mascara. The best part? Since I have to be careful to not rub my eyes so much, the puffiness & dark circles under my eyes have diminished. My makeup artist for my wedding had seen me 3 weeks prior to the special day for a trial run. When I entered the room, she could see my new lashes from across the room. When it was time for her to start work on me, she commented on the huge change and how great I looked. Masami did a fantastic job on my hair and makeup for my wedding, and the most impressive part is that she showed up to my house on the day of the wedding at the crack of dawn as scheduled! The makeup colors and hair was all in good taste and to my liking, which is subtle and classy, not too colorful since I usually don't wear too much makeup and I don't want to look too differently on my wedding day. My hair was simple and beautifully done as well. Masami suggested me putting a white flower in my hair, and that made me look so much more elegant. Please read and learn a lesson. Well, here is a dreaded lesson for everyone. I went out of town and had my eyelashes done by someone else- who "stated that she has been doing this for a long time" Lo and behold, the eyelashes she put on looked absolutely fake! I hated them, they were so thick that you can totally tell they were false! When one of them came off, it looked like there were 3 attached together. There was so much glue applied that they had irritated my eyes making me want to scratch and itch. This was absolutely a bad choice on my part. Beware out there!!!! They will tell you anything to get your business but now I have learned my lesson! I will tell you, I made this person remove them and the glue remover that she used was horrible!!!! It burned my eyes during application! It took her 2 hours to remove these horrible lashes!!! I lost 50% of my lashes! Compared to Masami's lashes which are Novalash, they are the worst. The ones that were put on by this "other" person looked fake, they were thick. Never again.... Masami's work is totally uncomparable. Novalashes are beautiful, they look natural, long and when they fall off, there's no pulling or tugging. For now, I am going to let my lashes grow. Bridal hair & make-up: The adjectives that I would use for Masami Rung are... talented, friendly, professional, easy-going, prompt, detail-oriented, and accommodating. I was referred to her by a friend who had her bridal hair and make-up done by Masami. It was very easy to communicate with her, and she returned my calls and emails promptly. Masami came to my place for the trial and took her time to answer my questions and explain different make-up techniques. She tried different shades of air brush make up (included in price) to get the right combination for my skin tone. She took notes of colors and styles she used for the trial, so she had them ready for the wedding. My maid of honor and I had booked her service for the wedding, and Masami and her assistant arrived a few minutes early to set up at our hotel. It was so relaxing to have a quite morning to get ready. It took less than 3 hours for my friend and I to do both hair and make-up. I gave her feedback from my trial based on photos I took, and she made adjustments on the spot. She even helped me get into my wedding gown after the session. My hair held up and I hardly needed to touch up make-up during and after the wedding. Our guests kept commenting how beautiful I looked without looking too overdone. In the photos I could recognize myself. :P Two months after the wedding I went back to her house and got another set of hair and make-up because we had to postpone our outdoor wedding photos (a.k.a. Asian Engagement session), and once again, Masami did a wonderful job. Eyelash extension: I decided to give a try and get eyelash extensions a week prior to our wedding.
