Very excellent and kind doctor and very skilled I am very fortunate to be one of his patients.

After my physical exam with my primary doctor, he referred me to an orthopedic doctor to have a contusion bump on my shoulder examined. The next day, Dr. Masem's office called to schedule an appointment and the earliest appointment was four weeks out. Arriving 15 minutes early as requested, I checked in and filled out some standard new patient forms and signed some consent forms. The office has a waiting room with about 15 seats and four seats outside the office by the elevators. After a short wait, an assistant called into the office and to an examination room. He asked the purpose of my visit and I showed him my shoulder. A little later he too me to room to have three x-rays taken of my shoulder and I returned to the exam room. Dr. Masem came into the room with an assistant, who was documenting the examination and notes from the doctor. The doctor looked at my shoulder and the bump and asked if I had pain, numbness, activity restriction, which I said no and that I had no restriction in motion. He then performed some strength tests on my left arm. Then he reviewed and interpreted the x-rays and that I had sustained a shoulder separation, which I think was from a fall on a rainy day. He said it had healed and the bump is scar tissue or bursa. He discussed the treatment options and since I had no pain and restriction of motion with normal strength, he recommended nothing be done at this time. He said I should make a return visit if symptoms develops/worsens. Overall, it was a great visit and examination by Dr. Masem. He was kind and professional in his examination of my shoulder and took his time to explain the bump and the cause from the viewing of the x-rays. The office staff was friendly and helpful as well. I highly recommend Dr. Masem for issues with your hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. read more

Dr. Masem is doctor's doctor! He is dedicated to his patuebts who always come first. He operated on my elbow to correct a compressed ulnar nerve and my hand. Both procedures produced excellent outcomes. But his dedication to each patient can lead to extended waiting periods of more than an hour. I've had experimental hand surgery done by Dr. Mathias Masem six years ago. The surgery was on my right hand, it was to improve the movement in my hand. Not any significant changes no improvement in regards to movement, just left with more pain than before I went in to have surgery. I have to say I am completely perplexed by some of the negative reviews here. I am writing this review on behalf of my 86 year old mother who saw this wonderful and caring doctor for her bilateral hand arthritis and treatments. My mother asked that I write this review as she does not use cell phones or the internet. My mother was so debilitated by her arthritis when we arrived at his office in May that she was unable to even cut a slice of bread when she first arrived at his office. I had to cook, clean and do all basic things at home. After 3 visits she is back to being fully hand independent. Remarkable I'd say. I am a Nurse Practitioner, familiar w office protocols and differing bedside manners. I was relieved and heartened at our first meeting by his kind and warm bedside manner. All his treatment recommendations made perfect sense from a medical stand point and any questions I did have about extra treatments or tests, he had excellent rationale for not doing. The office staff is fabulous. They were kind, helpful and patient w my mother. The medical care for my mother as mentioned before was excellent. She has had both hands back to comfort and full use after 3 office visits, within 6 weeks. As a medical professional, sometimes I think patients don't fully understand the gift they have when they find a kind and expert physician like Dr Masem. We have been thrilled w his care and would recommend him to our best friends and family member. Thank you Dr Masem and staff for helping my mother get back to 100%. Update: I returned to Dr Masem for care after breaking my wrist four years ago and having titanium plate and many screws placed by another surgeon in a different insurance group. That surgery went well but I was left with a nagging pain for many years. Dr Masem successfully removed the screws that caused the pain and valiantly attempted to remove that plate. Apparently titanium is known to fuse with bone at times and did so with me. I'm recovering now but already I'm noticing that I can move my wrist without that poking feeling I had. YAY and thanks Eric for my beautiful custom made extremely comfortable purple with black piping splint. read more

I don't know what the previous reviewers are talking about with the office staff. This is one of the best experiences I've had in any Dr's office in the bay area, and I've probably been in 30 or 40 in the last 7 years. Laverne at the front desk was extremely friendly and prompt in her service, and responsive to phone calls as well. I got in to see the assistant quickly and he took a very thorough history. The doctor came in quickly thereafter. Dr. Masem is a truly wonderful Dr. I am a circus athlete and have had a number of training injuries. I've seen orthopedists who really don't care that much. If you get to see them at all (some just let you see their physician's assistant and never spend time with you personally), they'll spend 5-7 minutes with you, not really listen to your story, not explain anything to you, and not really think through comprehensive treatment and support. Most doctors I've seen have no clue how to deal with serious athletes and will tell me rest for an extended period of time and send me on my way. Dr. Masem spent a solid 30-40 minutes carefully interviewing me about the injury, palpating the joint, going over my imaging and thoroughly explaining everything to me in as much detail as I requested, and discussing the pros and cons of many potential treatment options. They performed the procedures we decided on immediately and he went out of his way to make sure my follow up appt would be with him directly. He was friendly, deeply knowledgeable, and was all around everything I could ask for in a doctor. He is a great resource to athletes in the bay area. read more

Very disappointing care from Dr. Masem. He operated on my husband, ultimately removing most of 2 fingers. Besides ALWAYS late for appointments (to the tune of my husband waiting 2 hours in the waiting room almost EVERY time he had an appointment) and no pain management after surgery (or before), I would highly recommend you find another care/surgery option. He even went as far as to refuse to re-dress my husbands hand at a post-op follow up appointment. My husband was clearly not ready to leave with out re-wrapping his hand (as it was when he arrived). Dr. Masem said "well, don't you have gauze at home?". What kind of patient care is that? The worst. Again, I would use caution and frankly, find another care provider. read more

Three months ago I had carpal tunnel surgery on both hands, not always recommended, but I wanted only one period of healing and recovery. Dr Masem and his crew including the surgery center were all wonderful. Informative, thorough and kind. I couldn't recommend him more. I just had my final follow up today and I'm feeling nearly 100%. My experience with Dr. Masem's office overall was pretty mixed. He has excellent bedside manner and correctly identified a potential broken bone in my wrist from xray. He recommended a cat scan which was needed, to determine the exact nature of the break. He seems like a nice and carign guy, and is not medically aggressive or pushy. So medically, and personally, he was helpful and this is the upside. The downside is quite typical for medical care unfortunately: he appears to be overbooked and the coordination between him and his office staff is subpar. He recommended that I get a cat scan, but after it was performed, even though I personally dropped off the catscan cd to his office, when I called them they had NO idea who I was and NO record of the cat scan being performed. They seemed resistant to me coming into the office initially, concerned that my insurance might not cover the follow up. In other words, his office didn't want me to come in to simply have him evaluate the results of a costly diagnostic procedure that he personally recommended. Once the paperwork was finally straightened out, they worked hard to schedule me for the appointment, and moved things along quickly. But the lack of coordination and delays resulted in a 2 week delay, which with a broken bone, is a serious problem (since it heals wrong). Upshot is I lost trust in his practice to take care of me effectively. To add insult to injury, his office phone usually goes to voice mail, and they have NO way of leaving a message to have them call back. Just says "please call back later." Hello! This isn't the 1950s folks, please get with the 21st century. Like I know, I am a consumer of American medical care and therefore, I have the status of a stray dog, but can you at least make an effort to make me THINK that you have some interest in returning my call, ever? read more

Doctor Masem is my hero. As a writer, artist, and typewriter mechanic, I spend a lot of time very actively aware of my hands. A series of cryptic injuries (domestic violence. String-of-qualifiers aggravated [qualifier] assaults) found me with two mangled upper extremities in sequence, and no help with daily living tasks or recovery from the surgical interventions required. After consultation with 5 different surgeons, I was lucky enough to get into Doc Masem's schedule. His staff is mostly remarkable: experts all, coordinated by an ace admin, I credit them as much as him for my adaptation to my injuries and rapid-ish recovery. There were some problems, grave ones, in areas rare enough that maybe there's a learning curve but grave enough that there are laws protecting patients from their occurrence. Assistants disclosed my treatment schedule to my ex-husband, who tracked me there thru my insurance benefits, forwarded with the rest of my mail to him. I had criminal protective orders and HIPAA protection and many many letters abc post-it's and sharpie scrawl on my chart advising that no one be advised of my name, other identifiers, etc. And they let him not just take down my surgery details but change them. My car, home, and person were attacked on the eves of appointments, and the nurse who attends patients at their pre-surgery prep visits and post-op checks took direction from him and became abusive. She argued with me over drug metabolism and adverse reactions, at my second surgery, after more than a year of regular drug/assisted aggravated sexual assaults that she decided I was making up. She curtailed treatments as unnecessary given her personal experience with her carpal tunnel injury years earlier: she drove her son to soccer games the week of surgery, so why should I need a parrafin bath or tens unit or acupuncture instead of deadly-to-me tramadol? I got thru the second surgery aftermath on arnica, and a tens. Gave up on hand therapy, and was lost track of in post-op after I complained about the hipaa violations. I'd seek care from Dr.Masem in a heartbeat next time I have insurance. But not in his private practice, unless assured of fundamental shifts like management by objective. You can't expect a successful outcome of treatment if abuse is a component. Confidential information requires confidence his nurse and scheduling assistant willfully disregarded. But seriously, Masem himself is overwhelmingly meticulous, a caring professional non pareil. read more

Dr. Masem may be the most amazing hand/wrist surgeon on the planet. That doesn't matter to me right now. I went in to have the Carpal Metacarpal joint of my thumb looked at. My problem was function and strength not pain. On the form I filled out in the office waiting room, I stated the absence of pain several times. There were, "N/A"s all over the form. No pain. I have no pain. No. Not. Pain is not the problem, etc. "Is this due to an injury?" NO injury. "Describe the pain." THERE IS NO PAIN. There was even a section where it asked about workman's comp and the name and contact information for my lawyer. I wrote in, "Am I going to need one?" Turns out that wasn't so funny. The nurse, or assistant, identified herself many times as having once been a primary care doctor. She told me she was there for background. (Then what were the forms for?). She asked me about the pain. "I don't have pain," I told her and demonstrated what my problem was. It is function. There is no strength in the thumb. She praised Dr. Masem, obsessively, which made me uncomfortable (for him?). When he came in, he was very sweet. I liked him immediately. She introduced me and said that I was having pain in the CMC joint of my thumb. "There is no pain!" I had to insist. They'd taken X-rays and blow ups were now posted on the wall. He showed me what was going on and asked about the pain. When I told him I didn't have any pain, he said, "You should have pain." (??). Then he took my hand and started to manipulate the thumb. "Does this hurt?" no. "This?" no. "This?" no. "How about this?" no. The manipulations got more and more aggressive until he was grinding my thumb, pressing it into the joint and twisting, then yanking it out and rotating it. "Does this hurt?" "This?" "How about THIS!!!" Thinking about it now, it makes me sick. When I figured out that he was trying to hurt me, for whatever reason (curiosity? novelty? disbelief? sadism?) I raised my voice, "No, but if you keep doing that it WILL!" His assistant behind me explained, "He has to find where it hurts." I said, "No he doesn't," and yanked my hand away. I will not go into analyzing his assistant who put words in my mouth and carried on a bizarre monologue after the doctor left the room. The upshot is that I went in with a painless thumb and left damaged. I cannot use my thumb now without terrible pain and it's been nearly a week. If this is permanent I really don't know what to do. My family relies on me for care and I have no backup. I will not go back. I may file a complaint. I am still in a state of disbelief. Why would he do that to me? read more

I was trying to get in with a surgeon in San Leandro who shall remain nameless. Out of frustration I went to Dr. Masem's office and begged for help. My had was broken, I neede surgery, and it had been healing for 3 weeks already. Dr. Masem saw me on a walk in basis. I was in surgery the following day. I arrived on time. The doc saw me 68 minutes later. Yes, over one hour later. This is totally unacceptable. Apparently my time is worth nothing to this doctor and this office, while he makes hundreds of dollars an hour - at my expense. I'd love to send him a bill for my lost wages incurred by his overbooking strategy, but of course it doesn't work that way. This total lack of respect for others means that I'll be looking for another doc. I recommend that you do likewise. read more
