I brought in a couple kids motorcycles and Mason tuned them and brought back some life to enjoy again. Great service and knowledgeable.

At first I thought they were ok, but then started noticing problems with the service. You'll see some 5 star reviews on here, but keep in mind, mechanics have left this place. It's a small little garage shop and mechanics seem to come and go. I had them replace a front tire on my Yamaha FJR1300ES. Afterward I noticed front end vibration over a certain speed. I called Reed and he said sometimes the balancing weights fall off. I brought it back taking a photo of the balancing weights beforehand, there were 3. When I picked it up and paid for service, I asked Reed what the problem was and he said one of the weights was missing, but when I looked, the same 3 weights were still there and the vibration was not gone. I suspected his balancing machine is not working properly. Had another shop take care of it, vibration gone. I had them service my BMW R1200RT and afterward the left faring was rattling. I thought maybe it just needed an adjustment, but I decided to take it to San Jose BMW to make sure I got a straight answer. I was beginning to not trust Santa Cruz Motorcycle Service at this point. BMW found that two clips that hold the left fairing on were completely missing. They ordered new ones and put them on, rattling gone. I had Reed do a minor crash repair on my Yamaha, fell over on a mountain road while stopped, bad curve with steep camber. I did not receive an itemized receipt of the work and parts. He had some things repainted, some parts replaced. I felt like I got gouged on that one. I called one day to see if they had a Micheline Road 6 GT tire, as I needed a new one. Reed said he didn't and then said that I don't need a GT tire on my Yamaha FJR 1300ES. That shocked me. I told Reed my rear brake was pressing down too far and feeling spongy. He recommended the front and rear calipers and brake system full seal replacement and flush. After paying for that there was no change in the rear brake. A Yamaha dealer found it was the rear brake master cylinder that needed a rebuild kit, much less expensive fix. Had that done and the rear brake is now fine. I brought my Yamaha FJR to Reed for a 52k major service. All they did was adjust the valves and replace the spark plugs. Some miles later I noticed oil seeping down the side of my engine. I took it to another Yamaha dealer who discovered it was leaking from the valve cover that SCMS had serviced. Not trusting SCMS anymore, I paid for another valve adjustment from a Yamaha dealer and they found that the gasket was not replaced properly, old gasket material was not cleaned off completely and 7 valves were in need of adjustment, 4 out of spec and 3 right at spec. So I paid again to have it done right. Will probably be taking Reed to small claims court to get a refund of that service. He even ordered the wrong rear mounting bracket for a Givi case I had him put on, and then made me keep it instead of refunding me for it. Bad wiring job on the rear brake lights for that case also. Two of his mechanics came out of the shop one time I was there and told me they were leaving. They didn't like working for Reed. I'm not sure how many have come and gone, but that's not a good sign. So after a bunch of shenanigans, I decided to never go there again. I am demanding a refund of the valve service they did and will take it to small claims court because I guess I hurt Reed's feelings and he is refusing to stand behind his work. I gave this shop multiple opportunities to impress me with good service, and too many times things didn't go well. Reed was a salesman and he is a fast talker, quick to defend and defer. IMO, this shop is not trustworthy. From my personal experience and what I have heard from other people, Reed looks for any opportunity to jack prices and overcharge for things. Mechanics seem to come and go. In more than 30 years of riding, I have never had issues like this with any repair shop. But I have always gone to dealers. This was the first time I tried a non-dealer repair shop. You can see from his reply below that he takes no responsibility for any of these problems. Valve cover gaskets do not fail early if they are put in correctly. My bike has never leaked oil until SCMS worked on it. I have photos of everything from the shop that repaired it correctly.
