It is no…read morebuy-in and no gambling for money, but it is a great opportunity to practice poker with a friendly and fun group of people. I didn't know much about poker when I was invited by my walking partner to play but I went and was welcomed warmly. I played the first several times with a laminated card to help me remember things like what exactly a flush was and did it beat a full house! Lol When I needed help in anyway understanding the game or my options during play, the other players jumped in to advise. Their coaching is not slanted to give an advantage, but they've helped create a great learning environment. The chips are real, the play is competitive and fun even though (of course) there's no money being exchanged. And the more I get to know the other players, I see the healthy rivalry each week with the usual ribbing between some of the regulars. Sunshine Poker League tournament play occurs on specific nights at various venues. I have attended at Charlie's Place, a restaurant and bar on Foothill in SLO on Wednesdays. Other venues host poker nights like Figueroa Mountain Brewing in Santa Maria, and more in Atascadero, Lompoc, Nipomo, Bakersfield, and now expanding to San Diego. Of course, since it's free to play, we support the venue by grabbing some food or a drink on breaks.
