Working with Masonworks has been a roller coaster. They are very, very good at the masonry aspect, but we had a negative experience with everything outside of the excellent stone walls and patio they built for us. They have built beautiful flat stone walls for us in our front and back yards. We were very impressed with them after the first job they did for us in our front yard a few years ago, so we did not even look at other companies when we wanted to spruce up our backyard this year. The garden walls they built in the backyard were once again beautiful. However, as a gardener, I was disappointed and frustrated by the following things: - Our contract included 50/50 loam compost for the new garden beds. During the job, we caught them filling the beds with the grass they had pulled up from our old lawn and asked them to stop doing that. - When I went to start planting, I found that the garden beds had only a layer of new soil but that my shovel quickly hit a lot of big rocks and uncovered old soil, debris, and trash. - They completely trampled and destroyed my established perennial garden, which was located in a garden bed above where the new beds were built. They also broke several pavers in a little garden path I had and removed them without replacing them. - They recommended microclover for my lawn and seeded it for us as part of the contract, but it grew in quite spotty despite us maintaining it properly with daily waterings. I contacted them about the first issue and their initial response was to tell me that the stones I was finding were part of the wall construction - this was not the case. They had someone come out to take a look and concluded that the soil did need to be replaced, which they finally did. It is much better now, though I still have found some large stones in it. However, in the process of solving that issue, they caused the second one - many of the perennials that my mother and I had worked to plant over the past four years were totally destroyed. They offered me a credit to compensate for the loss, or the option to have them reinstall new flowers, but by that point I just didn't want them near my garden anymore so accepted the credit. I didn't bother contacting them about the spotty lawn - I threw down some grass seeds yesterday to try and fill in the gaps. While I appreciated that they did eventually take steps to resolve the issues, I found it quite frustrating to have to keep reaching out just to get them to do what they really should have done in the first place. They never did a final walkthrough as I've seen other contractors do. No apology for destroying my garden. They have a Benjamin Franklin quote, "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten" - I definitely felt some of that bitterness throughout this process. My conclusion is that they are really excellent masons but do not understand or respect gardens. If you hire them, be prepared to have to deal with that. read more

Fantastic experience with Junior and Bruno at Masonworks. On time, on budget and great outcome! Highly recommend.

We searched a long time for the right contractor for our front railings. Jeff and Riccardo were fantastic. They provided detailed estimates and were able to answer all our questions. They also adjusted on the fly and we able to make a custom solution for us with beautiful wood railings with aluminum balusters. We've gotten multiple compliments from friends how sharp it looks. We have two small kids and were very concerned to be going into winter without railings (we are 33 steps from the street). Jeff was able to squeeze us in before the end of season. Riccardo and his team were out in the freezing temps finishing the railings. Everything came out great; communications were smooth throughout; and cleanup was perfect. I'd highly recommend this company - we plan to use them for home improvement projects in the future. read more

We had a fantastic experience with the Masonworks team. We had a very drab front yard with grass we couldn't keep alive and a backyard that is at a tilt, plus a very thin patio. We met with Jeff to discuss ideas and he gave a lot of great advice. They started the work as soon as the materials were available. And finished quickly. Now looking back at it half a year later, our front yard has a tree and is full of wild flowers. Our patio in the back is a great size (Jeff pushed us to go a bit bigger and we are grateful). And we now have a long garden area that's flat and beautiful in the backyard. Jeff helped us design the garden area as we just had vague concepts. The workers were great, did the job carefully. Measured and remeasured to ensure it looked perfect. Were open to feedback and small requests. The only thing I'd state is to repeat any details that are discussed but not in contract that are maybe small preferences. To repeat them whenever there's a new team on the property as some details did get lost. But those were minors Overall great work and we are really enjoying the results. read more

They gave me a timeframe of 10:30-11:30 AM and showed up almost an hour early at 9:40 and started spam calling my phone while I was unprepared in the middle of a very important business meeting. At 10:20 I finally answered and was kindly greeted by a man named Junior. I told the gentleman I was very sorry but he had to wait 10 minutes, potentially even 20 minutes for me to be ready on my end and I offered to reschedule to 10:40 AM (still very much in window). His entire attitude dropped like a brick and he became very nasty, ultimately telling me to never call them again, ever. They wasted my time and I'm happy Junior decided to waste his own time too. Next time, show up on time not an hour early or an hour late. I feel like I dodged a massive bullet by not going with Masonworks. I also patiently waited 10 days just for a quote that never happened. Terrible unprofessional customer service, and disrespectful to the customers time. Nobody stated to be ready earlier or later than the timeframe given. If you can not provide an accurate time frame then dont give one. Imagine I showed up a full hour early to my business meeting and was rude and disrespectful to all the other attendees that walked into the meeting room only 10 minutes early... and then become unprofesional to anyone who showed up on time... what a joke... read more

I initially worked with Junior who came by to give us a quote on several paving projects around the property. Scheduling an initial visit was easy and he was on time. His first was missing part of the work we discussed but he came back to retake some measurements and sent updated information. The quote was competitive, neither lowest nor the highest we got and based on reviews and references we decided to hire Masonworks for the patio part of this project (remainder will take place at later date). Getting a date for the project was quite difficult. I understand it is a busy time, this was a relatively small project and other variable affect timeline but I would go weeks without an update and was never able to get a general timeline (are we talking a month or 6months out). We were not in a hurry to get this done, just wanted to have an idea of when the project would get done. We eventually got a two days notice that work would be starting. I was surprised that no one came to finalize details, such as the exact shape of the patio. We worked that out the day off. The crew was there early and hard at work all day. The whole project was completed over one day which was quite impressive. They worked well and efficiently and cleaned everything before leaving. There was a small issue with a fence post that was bent when they pulled out their truck, but Bruno, the site manager, sent someone to get that fixed for us. we are overall pleased with the results, even if communication was sometimes a bit challenging. read more

We have now used Masonworks for three projects: to replace a small retaining wall (2019), build a patio into a hill (2020) , and just finished a basement. As with my previous reviews, I can say that they did exceptional work. The permit process took much longer than I anticipated, due in part to the City of Boston, but once the work began it proceeded smoothly and took the length of time Masonworks anticipated. The lead on the crew reviewed various options with me when necessary, answered all my questions, and never pressured me to make one choice over another. When the pump to the toilet began to make noise during the project I texted in the evening and I got an almost immediate response from the project manager, who was at the house first thing the next morning. They even fixed a few stones that had dislodged from the corners of the patio as it settled. The office manager would benefit from an improved bed side manner but everyone was professional and polite. I highly recommend Masonworks. read more

Repaired to sets of stairs. Front stairs, removed damaged concrete slabs (4) and replaced with beautiful blue stone. Re-pointed brick base. Secured one railing that was salvageable. Back stairs, all brick, in total disrepair. Repaired to perfection! Also re-pointed foundation. The crew was fantastic. Accommodated any needs we had. Beyond polite. Hardworking. Put in a 12 hour day to get the job done. Couldn't ask for better work. The price was right too. They beat two other contractors who came in super high and also recommended unnecessary work. I followed up with my initial contact at the company who told me the guy should be coming back, he never did and I never received any communication. We had a very disappointing and traumatizing experience with Masonworks in the context of a large masonry project that involved a retaining wall and stairs. It all started from the scheduling: as soon as we had signed the contract, it was virtually impossible to reach them to get further details of the start dates and to discuss the details of the work. Then, they just showed up one day and put a sign at the yard. After they had started and demolished our previous structure, and we were at the point of no return, the change orders, extras started piling up. We also made the mistake of taking their words regarding, e.g., the stone material, which then turned out to be of a lower quality than what we had agreed upon. Masonworks had their subcontractors work from dawn to dusk, and beyond, which was both a disturbance to our neighbors and led to shoddy results (joints, angles, code violations, etc.). They do not seem to care of your property: there was a lot of damage to our front yard paving etc. Our mistake was that we did not investigate the history of this company properly, like reading their negative reviews and taking note of how aggressively they respond to them. As soon as problems started piling up, their communication with us became disrespectful and even intimidating from our perspective. Long after they are gone, we are still in the process of having real contractors fixing the mess they left behind, which is costly and time consuming. read more

I worked with Masonworks in May 2022 on a big project to completely re-do my patio around my inground pool, driveway wall, and two sets of steps. I had a great experience from start to finish, primarily working with Bruno as my main point of contact. I'm a first-time homeowner who was taking on my first significant project at the house. I asked a lot of questions before I decided to partner with Masonworks on the project and Bruno was consistently helpful, timely, and patient in his responses. The project required coordinating with a fence installation company, as I was also putting up a new vinyl fence around the patio. Bruno came onsite a 2nd time before we signed our contract so he could meet with the fence company and make sure everyone was aligned on the plan. Also, I was allowed to go into their office in Woburn to see the pavers in person before finalizing my choice, which I appreciated. The work started on time and progressed as expected, which was important to me due to the coordination with the fence company and trying to keep the whole project on track. Bruno's crew was respectful of the property and did a great job with the project. Towards the end of the job, Bruno and I did a walkthrough together and created a final punch list. His crew addressed all of the items on the punch list and the patio looks great. We received a lot of compliments from our neighbors while the patio was being constructed (it was visible to the whole neighborhood before the new fence was installed). Jeff and his team were FANTASTIC. I asked a few different companies for quotes and they were the best at communication and response. We wanted to extend the patio to the exisiting patio. During this time supplies are lagging nationally and they were good about letting me know about lead time etc. The team who came out to build the patio were the BEST. They really tried to come up with the best solution to add to the existing patio. Their workmanship and professionalism were excellent. They worked hard and they were very meticulous. They left the backyard also very clean afterwards and even fixed up the edge of exisiting patio to make sure everything lined up perfectly.
