Mass Ave Restaurant is an old dog you pat with genuine love and affection. Yes, it has green plastic tablecloths, a vinyl-tile floor and tables that can't seat more than 4. It is still a 5* establishment in my view, and here is why: I don't always want a fancy meal in a fancy place, as nice as that is sometimes. Mass Ave Restaurant is exactly what the name implies, and no more. I tend to call them when I wake up on Saturday or Sunday (or both, on such as this past weekend) to order us up some breakfasty take-out. When I asked my gf what she wanted for breakfast, she said "Everything." and proceeded to name off what that entailed. I called the order in (one thing to note is that you should speak slowly and enunciate when ordering by telephone, because they seem to have trouble hearing you) and the girl said it would be "5, maybe 10 minutes." !!! On Sunday morning?!?! Omelettes are about $5, side orders of fries and onion rings, which are crispy and good are $3, and their club sandwiches like the cheeseburger (recommended) are $6 and come with a side. Know that they do not fire up the fry-o-lator on Sundays, and that homefries are a wonderful thing, and not to be neglected. Oh, they have a few Mexican items on the menu, like rolleno plates. I've never been in the mood to try them because their other food is so good. I note this because the door and menu say they are a Mexican restaurant. Service when eating in is not usually anything special, but prompt and dutiful. I think eating in is pleasant enough. There are barstools and about a half dozen tables. Regulars tend to be at the "bar" which is all well and fine because I don't like sitting there. They always accommodate requests and generally I just feel like I am getting my money's worth of good food every time I order anything from Mass Ave. read more

Picture this: 6 teenage girls, 1 hour before school. Hungry, starving, desperate for any sort of food. The Mass Ave Diner was their victim. 3 of them arrived at 10:30 sharp, and the others trickled in within the next 20 minutes. The waitress came to take their order. She seemed frustrated, stressed, as she was the only one in the restaurant. A sign of understaffing and corruption of management. One girl asked for chocolate pancakes, and the waitress laughed. But they forgave her. They only wished the best for her as she was forced to work in terrible conditions. The girls waited for their food. And waited...and waited...and waited. Time was running short. They had 15 minutes more they had to leave for school. They asked for the check, solely to be efficient. Guess what the waitress did? She threw it at them. Poor her. The food finally arrived after an unacceptable amount of time. One girl's order was missing an egg, one's was missing an english muffin, and one's simply did not come. It was disappointing. The girls rushed to shove the food in their mouths, but they couldn't enjoy any of what they were consuming. They rushed out if the tiny, claustrophobic building. 2 of them suffered from salmonella for the next few hours, a result of the uncooked eggs, and they decided to never go back to the Mass Ave Diner again. read more

Low rating because of food. Got a side of pancakes and french toast for breakfast. Was pretty excited to dig in but realized that there was a problem during my first bite... The pancake tasted like omelette and bacon, and the french toast tasted like oil. Pancakes and waffles are some of my favorite things... I can't believe I tasted what I tasted. The cooking grill doesn't have designated spots to cook certain foods, and it does seem like they care much about cleanliness (this isnt something I care much about as long as the food is good). Excellent coffee and good food. This is a tiny place which gets busy on the weekends with the brunch crowd especially after 10 am. They have the BEST butter milk pancakes but you may want to order them with a side of fruit as they serve them with nothing but syrup. The freshly squeezed orange juice is awesome and they also make grapefruit freshly squeezed juice. Another highlight of this place is their fresh fruit smoothies. The home fries are also great. I went to Mass Ave Diner for breakfast on a Saturday and sat at the counter. The place is run by a delightful young woman who is half owner with the cook. I observed a funny scene as I was having breakfast: as the place was getting busy the cook became grumpy. It was hilarious as he kept saying things to the woman at the register and she finally got fed up and told him "Can you stop talking please!" read more

Conveniently located just a few blocks from Central (between People's Republik and Plough & Stars), this is a small, casual, inexpensive eatery. It's almost never crowded, except of course at Sunday brunchtime. The offerings are basic, but not bad. A smiling waitress will offer you coffee, then constantly refill it. The orange juice is freshly squeezed each morning. If you want a more exceptional execution of the same classic diner food, head to The Neighborhood Restaurant up in Somerville. Or if you want something more sophisticated than potatoes/toast/eggs or pancakes/fruit-sauce, go to Zoe's. read more

Wow. What a disappointment. It's got adorable diner vibes, but truly dismal food and highway robbery prices. $18 for a "California Benedict," which was an English muffin with an egg on it. Oh, and the bathroom (which is in a creepy, unfinished basement) had no toilet paper in it. I'm not saying the roll had run out, I'm saying there were no rolls. Nothing. Stopped in on our way from airport to hotel, looked busy/popular which seemed to be a good sign. Only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table to open up, and there was counter seating as well. Extensive menu (omelets, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, burgers, etc) so it was hard to decide what to get. I think one of the chefs is Caribbean and his gallo pinto was yummy. Husband had corned beef hash and literally commented that it probably came out of a can (but he says that about all corned beef meals he eats... yet he keeps on ordering/eating them). The house potatoes were undercooked, not crispy at all. If we were to be in the area again, would maybe be tempted to come back and order lunch instead of breakfast. This place rules! It's hard to believe you can get any meal in Cambridge for less than $10 but Mass Ave diner is both affordable and delicious. My boyfriend and I went for breakfast on a Sunday morning around 10. No wait to sit at the counter so that's what we did. I had the banana but pancakes, which were fluffy but filling, with plenty of bananas and walnuts. He had a bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich with a side of plantains. I love that you can get plantains here! They were excellently fried with just a hint of cinnamon. There were two standouts of our dining experience. First, the fresh squeezed orange juice. YUM. So perfectly sweet and authentic. Second, one of the waitresses makes jewelry which they display, and I bought the absolute cutest avocado stud earrings. Not really a part of the meal, but so cool that they had that. So combining some of my favorite things: food, affordability and shopping all in one place. read more

I ordered a chicken dinner plate and the person at the register told me it came with 5 pieces of chicke. I received 3 completely overcooked chicken wings and it was so hard I could used it at my construction job... also its 13$ for this with a kids meal side of fries and a horrible attempt at coleslaw. this place used to be good but now it's nothing more than a cash grab only item I recommend getting it the breakfast sandwich. So many other spots to eat in the area so spend your hard earned money somewhere else. read more

I'll start with the pro: solid diner food (we went for brunch). Everything tasted good and was properly prepared. Cons: The wait to receive one's food is quite long for simple diner food. When I think of a diner, I want menus given to me when I'm seated and order quickly taken and served. All in, we sat our table for nearly an hour with simple diner orders (eggs and omelettes). Also, they have an up-charge of $4 for a "fruit cup" which was essentially two sliced strawberries, two raspberries, and two slices of banana. In addition, they took down our toast order wrong, delivering an English muffin rather than wheat. Otherwise, prices were reasonable, but the wait to receive one's order dissuade me from hurrying back. read more

I've being seeing your advertisement for a long time and seen how awesome your food look so I said one day I must go... well I finally made it on 7/3. I got there at 11:18. Did not get greeted at the door, but got a girl with glasses with a bit of an attitude. My son and I sat down and after 20 minutes of no one coming over my son told the girl with glasses we were ready to order. She said someone else is taking the orders. So we waited another 10-15. Put the order and waited longer, saw the people that order after us get their food and 10-15 minutes still after waiting. We lots patience. It was 12:15 when we walked out! The sad thing is it wasn't even crowded as I seen other diners and they had plenty of help or at least enough help. Pretty sad to promote a restaurant that people go out their way to go and try enjoy and support. The food at Mass Ave Diner is excellent! Simple, prepared well and tastes great and not like a pile of grease. They definitely do not adhere to the "diner" stereotype of really quick, greasy food; I genuinely enjoy coming here because the breakfast is really good. Space is tight here, especially on the weekends of course, so I wouldn't bring a big group here. This is a great spot for just you and a date, or you and two friends. There isn't really a good spot to stand if you need to wait for a table, you just kind of have to stand behind people eating at the counter, which feels so rushed. Their orange juice is heavenly - I challenge you to not drink the whole glass before your meal comes out (difficult, I know). Can't beat freshly squeezed! I usually get their veggie omelette, and when I was here yesterday, I decided to get fresh fruit as a side. It was an extra $2 and change, and the portion was so small, like a couple berries and a few slices of banana. Not worth it in my opinion! So we gave it another try, actually we've been back twice since my initial review. Much much better. Even though there was a wait, it was obvious there was much more organization at the grill. Every time I try something new here I'm blown away at how good it is, also they really know how to do bacon. Some times I'll order breakfast and get lunch to go. We started things off with Mass Ave Diner's rich and flagrant coffee. Rare for a local diner, it was brewed perfectly and is sourced from Atomic Cafe in Beverly (not to be confused with Atomic Bean next door). I'd come back just for the coffee. For food, Karolina's Chocolate Chip and Cranberry pancakes are a must-try as is the vegetarian omelette served alongside hearty home fries. Both were not too greasy (and didn't taste like the griddle as a reviewer mentioned below). The pancakes had fresh cranberries and with a bit of butter didn't even require maple syrup (real maple syrup available for $1 extra). The service is prompt and space is small and cozy, meaning a potential wait on weekend mornings. I recommend trying to snag a seat looking out large glass windows onto Mass Ave which allowed for a great scene on a snowy morning. read more

Very unimpressed. Poor food, poor service, dirty plates!! We sat down, got half filled coffee cups, slow to take orders. Place was empty and took forever to get the food. Food wasn't really cooked properly (undercooked potatoes, over cooked eggs). Asked for coffee refills, didn't receive. Discovered that there was debris in the coffee cup and the milk thing. Food did not taste great at all. Won't come here again which is a shame because I am very close. read more

The owner treats his staff like shit and it really makes it awkward ward sometimes to eat there. I usually went for breakfast on saturdays or sundays so maybe this isn't as big of a deal when it isn't so busy. But several times the owner is yelling or berating someone and it sucks. The pancakes are some of the best in Boston/Cambridge as their batter is great. Used to be able to get a stack of 3 for $5 and it was an awesome deal. They have since raised the price though to I think $9 and it's a rip off. So I no longer go here. It's a shame cause it hsed to be my weekend go to.. read more
