It turned out that it was impractical for her to use the crutches. The crutches are a regularly stocked item that came off the shelf, not a special order. She tried to return the crutches on two occasions, but the store was closed. When she finally was able to go in on July 12, 2011, the store refused to accept the merchandise for return, even though the crutches were clearly unused and still had the original packaging attached. The store cited a sign, as well as the fine print on the bottom of her sales receipt, indicating that there would be no returns allowed after 7 days from the date of sale. (It also indicates that even returns made within 7 days are subject to a 10% "restocking" fee. This would be the charge to put the item back on the shelf.) A merchant has a right to dictate restrictive return and refund policies; however, there are times when flexibility is in order and simply makes common sense. Fortunately, consumers have the power to choose which businesses to patronize and where to spend their dollars. Based upon our singular experience with Hometown Medical Supply of Northampton, I would warn fellow consumers away from doing business with this company ... a company with unfriendly policies that strongly suggest that it should not be in business.
