Received guest massage services this week at Chapel Hill, NC location and was quite pleased first and foremost with the greeting and warm welome from the staff. Massage was spot-on excellent. I was impressed with the initial stretching from head to toe that I have never ever received during a massage. Of course, I didn't want to remove myself from the table nor the room once the session ended. I left so relaxed and light on my feet that I suggestd they consider a crash room for those of us having to wait for someone starting their session and it would be an hour wait. So a lot of massage places get a bad review for many different reasons and it's really all about knowing what you are looking for and managing your own expectations. When I come to a Massage Envy I am not expecting to get a "resort" like experience. I am looking to solve an issue I have with a muscle group or made a stress level. This facility does exactly that. I have been getting deep tissue massages from Rick for about 2 months now (two a month). Rick is great and can break down the muscles and is attentive to your concern. Also, the staff here is great. Calling the day before to remind you of your appointment. So if i am rating the facility I would give it 3 stars. The is nothing here to push it over the top and for sure a resort of some sort may provide a more intimate environment. However, Rick gets a 5 Star for sure!!! I called this morning and no answer 3 times.. after finally getting ahold of someone I told her what happened and she said maybe it was my bank acting up and that it's something normal that happens. I told her the card reader wasn't working right and she had made me insert and reinsert my card 4 times. She said she'll see what she can do then hung up. That was this morning and now it's 4 pm. Do not get a membership here - absolute scam. I was pressured into signing up for a membership at the only massage I have been able to schedule back in October. Once you become a member, it is very difficult to schedule a massage as they never have appointments available. I regretfully signed a 6 month contract in October and have not been able to get out of the contract - they even continued to charge me after the 6 months were over. I moved more than 25 miles away from the location, and yet I was not told that that would have qualified me to break my contract. Additionally, when my 6 months were up in April and I emailed about cancelling, the manager replied and asked me to sign another form to cancel (why is the email request not enough??). However, her response went to my spam folder and I was charged again for May and June. Now that I am moving across the country, they claim that they have finally cancelled my membership (although I have read online about people continuing to be charged even after being told their membership is cancelled), but they have only given me 60 days to schedule my unused credit. If I have not been able to find ANY open appointments at this location over the last 8 months, in what world would I be able to find SEVEN open appointments over the next 60 days? Especially when I'm moving across the country this week?? They have refused to refund me for anything, including May and June, and also cannot direct me to a contact i can speak to at the corporate level. This is an absolute scam - I deeply regret ever signing a contract with them. Do not let them pressure you into a contract like they pressured me. We went in for a couple massages early last year, paid in full, NEVER signed up for anything other than one time services. Months later I checked my credit card statement for something unrelated and found out they have been billing me $60 a month all year. Cancelled my membership in the Fall after trying to support local biz workers due to Covid. After finding that my tips were not going to the therapist (I was quoted $45 special membership) they charged me $55, I cancelled membership only to be charged 6 months later. The owner put a freeze in my account but stated in email that I would not auto renew after term. (Word play here). Today I got charged then only to be told I still have to fulfill the term. Guess what I did not ask for a freeze that was your own doing, Tara. If you can do what you want so can I. read more

Don't do it!!! This business has very poor and unethical practices. I joined just before the pandemic began and though I understand it is difficult for businesses now I was forced to continue to pay for a membership I did not use for an entire year. I am a registered nurse and due to Covid I am not comfortable with the health risks associated with receiving unnecessary therapies. The numbers continue to rise. When I was finally allowed to cancel I was told I had a limited time to get the therapies I paid for all year. I expected I would at least be able to use the services I paid for when the Pandemic situation improves. Swindling folks out of there money seems to be part of the practice here. Changed spa membership to Massage Envy from another chain and not sure that was a smart move. First appointment today and therapist was a no show. Equally disappointing was that when I checked in, neither of the two employees at the counter even knew that the therapist wasn't there. Very tempted to demand my membership be canceled. When a member is a no show at an appointment they get get charged the full fee; when the therapist is a no show, what do I get? Quite miffed..... read more

Massages are fine when you can get one. Definitely don't recommend the membership as it's nearly impossible to get an appointment. They've been talking about hiring more people all year long. I was told I could be put on a list of people to text in case of cancellations - I got 2 texts and then they stopped. I can't even check on-line to see how many massages I have available based on my monthly payments and no one ever picks up the phone, so I can't figure that out without showing up in person. Also, if you pay your monthly dues, that covers 1 massage per month. Be aware that you're expected to tip an additional $15-30 per visit, so your dues must not be paying the therapists very well. I would stick with paying per massage, not the membership. read more

This review is about the poor service I received when I tried to utilize the benefit of my membership in another state while I was traveling. I found a location I thought was close to my hotel, so I called and booked a massage (picking from the 3 open slots they had available today). When I ran "walking" directions, I realized I had booked at a location that was 3 miles from my hotel instead of the location that was 1.5 miles. I called the closer location and booked; They did tell me I would need to call the original location to cancel - didn't realize the scheduling software was not the same across the franchise. When I called the original location to cancel, I was told that I would be charge 50% for cancelling the same day as the appointment. I reminded the girl, she had just spoke to me less than 30 min prior when I booked the appointment. I could understand if I had been holding this slot for weeks and then cancelled at the last minute...but it was just a bit earlier and they had several available slots. Keep in mind the only reason I was cancelling was because I re-booked at a different location. I understand the girl on the phone was just following procedure, so I asked to speak to the manager. I was told the manager was out for several days dealing with a family emergency. I was shocked there is no one with any authority there to talk to me and apply any logic to the situation. Unfortunately, I will no longer be in town when the manager is expected to return. Really poor service that there are no other managers at this location. I have high expectations of Massage Envy's customer service. This is a luxury subscription service for which my bank account is drafted for every month. They should hold all franchises to the highest level of customer service. read more

I was extremely disappointed in my massage experience here. I had to ask my therapist over ten different times to use less pressure as he was actively causing me pain. He would say oh yes sorry, hows this pressure but then immediately resume his deep pressure a few seconds later. At one point he masssaged my neck so intensely that it made my arm spasm. Further, I have had prior neck surgery for thyroid cancer and I asked him to avoid my anterior neck area. He once again said oh yea sure but then two seconds later went back to the same area. Also during the entire massage he had a fan on and it was blowing cold air on me. I was freezing the entire time. And to top it all off, he finished the massage 13 minutes early. I was asked by the front desk staff member how my massage was afterwards and I told him it was really not good and that I was sore and in pain after it right then. All I was told was oh yea, some people either really love or hate this therapist. No offer for a complimentary massage. Nothing. The next day it felt like my entire back was bruised and I couldn't even lightly touch my back without pain. It took 3-4 days before I stopped hurting. The entire experience made me feel extremely uncomfortable and honestly a bit violated. I have never experienced a massage like this before. No one should be in active pain during a massage and therapists should be capable of listening to their clients requests and not have a fan blowing cold air on entire visit. Beware of the Massage Envy contract! They won't let you cancel your membership. My finances have changed and I can't afford to get a massage every month. I get that the personnel at the franchise are just doing their job, so it's not their fault. I hate that there's no way to cancel your contract and I am worried that I am going to be one of the reviews below. I'm disappointed with my experience with this and I will try to figure out a way to make it work till my contract ends. I'm updating this review because I fell in love with a new therapist I just had. Her name is Pam and she did an amazing job. It was definitely a 5 Star massage and more! She knows exactly her stuff, she talked me through which muscles were really tight. I walked into the massage being extremely tight bc of a heavy upper body workout. Short version: VERY DIFFICULT TO CANCEL MEMBERSHIP!!! Here's how it went: 1. I fill out cancellation form; 2. manager leaves voicemail to confirm receipt of cancellation form, proposes that I "freeze" my acct, asks me to call to confirm cancellation form; 3. I call to confirm cancellation form, front desk relays cancellation message to manager; 4. manager calls and leaves another voicemail to confirm receipt of cancellation message and cancellation form, again proposes "freezing", asks me to confirm cancellation message; 5. I call to confirm cancellation message and reiterates cancellation intent; 6. manager calls and leaves confirmation of cancellation. The whole process took over a month, and they charged me $54 extra. A cancellation request should be processed like this: 1. I fill out cancellation form; 2. form is stamped "RECEIVED" and membership cancelled. Long version: I signed up for Massage Envy (ME) in fall 2011 when I moved to NC for graduate school. Most of the time I received my massages from the ME in Durham (on Renaissance Pkwy) b/c it was closer to where I lived, but this review is with the Chapel Hill ME because this is one that gave me the most headaches. Signing up for ME is no problem, and they automatically charge your credit card every month even if you don't show up (will discuss this part later). I knew I would be leaving NC in late April 2013, so in the beginning of March when I called the Durham ME to make a reservation, I asked to cancel starting in April. They first tried to get me to stay by saying instead of cancelling, I can freeze it for 6 months and they won't charge me, when I said I'm not coming back in 6 months (or ever...), they said my membership is valid at franchises across the country. After I said no thanks to that, they said that I can't cancel my membership anyway because (1) cancellations have to be done IN PERSON, and (2) cancellations have to be performed by the franchise that signed me up, in my case, Chapel Hill. 1st sign of cancelling trouble: If I'm only allowed to cancel in person at the franchise I signed up at, what would've happened had I moved back to CA first and wanted to cancel, fly back to NC? In early April I went to the Chapel Hill ME to cancel in person. Only the manager can process cancellations, so I was told to come back. By now I'm getting close to moving time and knew I had to pay for April's massage, another $54. Mid April, I go again, manager not in that day and not the next day either, but I fill out a form and the front desk told me the manager will call me back in a couple of days to confirm my cancellation. 2nd sign of trouble, cancellation isn't valid until a manager "confirms" it, and a manager doesn't come in every day. Looks like I'm in it for the long haul. I ask the front desk as to how many "pre-pays" I have left. A pre-pay is equivalent to an hour's worth of massage. In any particular month when I'm too busy to go, they still charge me $54, and that becomes a pre-pay. If you do go in for a massage on a particular month, then your credit card is charged in person. So I ask the front desk if I can give one of my pre-pays to my Fiance, they said yes, but with a $10 transfer fee. This seems highly unfair. I've already paid, it's my credit, and they want me to pay $10 so that I can give the credit away? But I do it, b/c I wanted him to have a massage. So the next few days, I went in several times to use up all my pre-pays, leaving one for my Fiance. On my last trip into ME, I go with my Fiance, he uses my prepay (which cost me $54+$10), and I pay for my massage in person. Then a couple of days later we're out of NC, but the manager never called. Silly me, I assumed they figured out that I was quitting since I used up all my pre-pays in less than a week. Almost 30 days later (!), I got a voicemail from the manager, informing me that she's calling to let me know that she's received my cancellation form and offers to freeze my account instead of cancelling. and then I had to call her back to confirm that I've received her voicemail and to confirm that I really wanted to cancel, and that if I really wanted to cancel, I have until tomorrow to use up my prepay. 3rd and 4th signs of trouble. After more than a month I'm still not cancelled! And they've charged my credit card automatically even though I've already gone and paid for one in person, and now this pre-pay is set to expire in one day. So I call back AGAIN to confirm that I want to cancel, and the front desk says the manager is out at lunch and wanted me to call back later, I insisted that they just take down a message because I didn't want to play phone tag and I had to work. They were reluctant to do it, but I wouldn't get off the phone until they did. Next day, manager calls to let me know that the message was received and wanted to confirm with me that I wanted to cancel, I call again to confirm, she calls again to confirm. ARGH. read more

Watch your credit cards. My husband was on my plan for a year and my date on my card that was paying expired. When he went in for his massage we only had two months left so he gave his credit card for the remaining payments and I updated my info for the two months. In April, we submitted out cancellation request, personally at the store front and all was well in April. It is now almost August and now after 3 months of no activity his card was drafted $55. Surprise, yes! He called repeatedly this morning and no one answered. Finally had to call another location to get a manager and information. The manager was supposed to call back this afternoon and of course with their awesome customer service, yes, we had to call back. Here was her response "I don't know why that happened, why don't you give your credit card and we can refund" no explanation, no wondering why, nothing, just give me your credit card. Don't know about you but this isn't right. First of all they repeatedly cancel last minute and don't apologize yet if we need to cancel will charge us a visit. They are unprofessional most times at best and they suck at billing Yes I am venting and I should complain to corporate but I cannot get corporate. In fact, i can't get anyone to answer me on WHY! I'd been going to this location for four years. They had great management in place for the first few years and then seem to have gone through turbulent times. I have now cancelled my monthly membership due to the extreme pain of working with them. In the past few months I have had 4 out of 5 scheduled appointments cancelled the day of the visit. The first of these happened while I was in the waiting room after being checked in -- the person at the desk came back and said "I'm so sorry, your therapist isn't here, I didn't realize it until now." Two additional cases -- the most recent of which I received today -- were attributed to "scheduling errors" where their systems allow for them to make a reservation on my behalf, but apparently did not account for the availability of the masseuse. Both of these notifications were given to me a few hours before the appointment, even though they called me the day before to confirm. Today I finally "had it" and I complained. I related that this is very frustrating to have 4 of the last 5 massages cancelled the same day with no recourse offered. I additionally relayed that their ineptitude in this location led me to cancel my membership, because it's frankly a joke. The desk assistant suggested that I can transfer my membership credits to someone else or try another location. Thanks for the advice, I'm going to Southpoint from now on. Y'all are seriously a joke. This is the consistently worst customer experience I have encountered, and for some reason I kept coming back. No more. Been here twice so far. The staff are friendly and helpful, and I've never had to wait at all. The decor isn't great, but it's adequate. The massage itself: The first time it was a little disappointing, but the second time was AMAZING. Devija (pronounced "day-vee-yuh" by the staff) is awesome. She found every hard-to-find knot in my back immediately and gently but firmly worked at them until they were gone. I haven't had such a good massage in years. I'm now a loyal customer. read more

I never leave business reviews, but I just couldn't resist giving Massage Envy Eastgate some praise! I have suffered from migraines since I was a child so I try to get the occasional massage to work out some tension, but it's hard for me to work in the time or cost. After having a migraine for 3 days in a row, I decided I would try to squeeze in a last minute massage with the Eastgate location. They were able to schedule me in even though I called the day of and only an hour beforehand. I had never been to this part of Chapel Hill and on my way to the store, my phone died, hence so did my GPS and I got extremely lost. I ended up missing my appointment time and found my way home to charge my phone. Instead of just charging my card for canceling, a representative from the store, Tia, contacted me and rescheduled me for the SAME NIGHT. She was very understanding and accommodating when they could have been angry at me for missing my appointment. When I got to the store, the staff was very friendly and laid-back. They were informative of how the massage works and asked me various questions to see what my needs were. Instead of providing a generic massage, they really catered to what I needed and what I was comfortable with. They offered water, drinks and candy while I waited, which was only a moment for me to fill out the questionnaire. As for my massage, I can't rave enough about Sara, the massage therapist. It was the best massage I have ever had. She really paid to attention to what I said I was looking for and was receptive to where I was aching the most. I felt relief in areas I didn't even know I needed it. She is truly the best massage therapist I have encountered. You can tell she is very experienced and professional. There is nothing more awkward about having a stranger touch all over your nude body (lol), but Sara made me feel extremely comfortable and at ease. Awful experience. This is literally the worst massage envy I've ever been to. I had a late appointment so when I got there the front desk employees were outside smoking. Then I had to wait for them to come in and feel like giving me my first time visitor health card. Once I finished the card one of the ladies didn't even acknowledge me and the other was in the makeshift office pretending to work. I wasn't even aware that they had a quiet room until I left because I wasn't invited in to it. When the masseuse came out he just said hi and follow me and basically left me at the door. No ME small talk or anything. I told him I wanted a medium pressure massage but I don't think he knew how to do anything but deep. I also asked for him to focus on my back, neck, and shoulders, however, my shoulders were completely ignored and I had to constantly tell him to lighten up on the pressure.
