An appointment cancelled with 34 minute notice from them just now. I called yesterday to reconfirm this long made appointment. They said it's there. I'm a member. It's extremely difficult to get any appointment. When I do get one, and reconfirm it, I expect to get a message. Not cancelled as I leave the house. Nothing that I'm looking for is even available for over a month away. I have made other ones way ahead of time but are they real? checking those, the dates have changed. The offers of a cancellation seldom happen. once maybe? It seems like they choose certain people but blow off others. The messages are good. If you can get them. It's very bad business practice because it disrespects people and their other time commitments. It seems to be their business model. Terrible customer service. I called to change the client of the appointment I had booked the day before the appointment, spelled her name out and everything to the guy. Today for the appointment, they tell her she's not listed and it's still under my name. So I call them, was told I didn't change the appointment...so who did I call then and spelled her name out to?? Not the brightest working the phones. Also had a previous appointment that I cancelled 2 weeks in advance and was still charged since the people working the computer didn't cancel both people for the couples massage. This review is not aimed at the massage therapist, his work is very good and he is a very nice person. This is for the amount of tip we were charged and how the calculation was made. My wife is a member so we pay a monthly fee and if she gets an extra half hour we pay that at the time of the massage, total of $108. She tipped 20% which should have been $21.60, but it was $39.13. When we inquired I was told the tip amount was based on a non-member cost of $188. So beware, if you use this location, watch out on how much your tip is. Better yet, take cash and give that to your massage therapist. NOT a good way to treat members! read more

If you're trying to get a massage, they're really hard to schedule with and you're better off finding another non-chain provider - you'll get a better massage and not have to wait 2 months for an opening. Kamren, who did my facial, was amazing and so nice. But honestly I didn't even go here wanting a facial, I wanted a massage lol, but I got tired of waiting to use this gift card so I decided to just do the facial, which was easier to schedule. The good ones all left and today I drove 40 mins to get here to try a new massage therapist ( probably not even good for my needs) and as soon as I walked in they said sorry we were just going to call you and let you know that your massage therapist is sick today. Well... it's been at least 2 years since I have been to this location. Front desk friendly.. with the exception of a guy with colorful hair.. was super "snippy" over the phone..but anywho Arrived for my appointment.. met my massage therapist. Was a nice guy. Started my massage.. he probably talked for a good 20 minutes into my massage. "Dude! I want to relax and not hear you rant and feel spit on my back from you talking right over top of me"! He finally stopped talking. The kicker is.. he massaged my back for 45 mins. I paid for an hour. Irritated to the utmost. I got a gift card for massage envy a long time ago but I have a normal salon I go to that I love but unfortunately yesterday they were booked so I figured I'd try my gift card. I called the Urbana office and was so happy to get an appointment for 1 that day. However when I got there I was told I'd have to reschedule because I am 12w pregnant and there was no prenatal person there. I was a little annoyed because I feel like these are quick things you could ask while making an appointment to avoid this. The desk was really nice about it though and helped me find an appointment for the same day at 3 in Frederick. This was the worst massage I've ever had. 1. The guy didn't even come get me until 3:10. We went over quick what I wanted and I explained some problem areas that I wanted a little more attention on. 2. I've never been to a salon where the therapist talks to you the entire massage. This was the most annoying thing ever. He tells me all about the massage style he's doing and the benefits and the founder and how it works to then the conversation becoming about politics....okay great I'm here to relax, definitely not talk to you about politics. I tried to be obvious that I was not into talking while getting my massage but half way through I eventually just gave up and started talking back once I realized this was not going to be the massage I was hoping for. Lastly this massage itself was a joke. Had I not had a gift card I definitely would have been complaining about paying for that experience. My husband could have done the same thing for free. He started by saying he was going to do csf release and that it would make such a difference in the massage. For 35 minutes he placed his hands on my lower back and on my temples barley touching them and that was it. When I finally realized I was more than half way through my time I spoke up and asked if this was all he was going to do because this was not what we talked about. I came for sore overworked muscles and whatever this was it was not helpful. He said "don't worry Ill get to the massage part. You must be used to regular massage". What?! Didn't I come here for a massage not whatever this is. With 15 minutes left he finally had me roll to the side and massaged my upper neck and back while talking the whole time of course and then was done. I was beyond annoyed that he massaged no other areas especially when I told him I'm on my feet all day for my job. I thought this would be a nice relaxing hour away from kids and work but instead I wish I would have just saved my money and waited for my normal salon. Nowhere - not on the website, not in their materials, not when I called and asked, not when I filled out the paperwork - was I warned or told that people with disabilities or medical complications needed a doctor's note in order to receive services. If they had said that *anywhere*, I would have happily made one appear when I came for my appointment, but instead they waited until I was *in the massage room, sitting on the table* to inform me that I would need a doctor's note in order to receive services. I totally accept and understand that massage can be contraindicated in some cases, and I had asked my doctors if it was okay for me to get a massage and not only was I told it wasn't contraindicated, but it was highly suggested! Now if only I had known I needed them to write it down... When they turned me away, I very specifically asked them to destroy my paperwork, as I felt odd letting them keep me on file since they refused services. And yet, one day after I had been kicked out, I received a phone call asking me if I'd like to schedule a second massage (hard to do, since I hadn't had a first one), and then later that day I received two emails from them. Luckily, there's an unsubscribe link. I get that you can't ask too much from a massage place located in a strip mall. But at the very least, when the dude in the wheelchair rolls in, you might think to mention that he will need a doctor's note. It was like they were so hungry for my contact information that they didn't care. There are some great massage therapists in the area who are desperate for work and who won't deluge your voicemail and email inbox with spam. Go to one of them instead. Most of them are cheaper, and don't require "memberships", and are way more ethical. read more

My wife and I signed up for the monthly massage program a few months ago. While the soft selling of health spa-related products and services is regrettable, just about all other businesses have to adopt this value add-on strategy to survive and be profitable. I did not feel that the staff and therapists were following a hard sell strategy approach. Just be aware that they will kindly ask if you want to add a gratuity after you have had one of their services. Also, you can use your HSA to pay for massage services. My wife used to be a massage therapist and I have had massages from some of her colleagues when we lived in the Ann Arbor area. As a result, I have been exposed to many different approaches. Like at Massage Envy, all massage therapists have their own style doing massages. Since I bike commute and work on the computer everyday, I request that therapists work on getting the knots out my shoulders and neck, and stretching out my thighs, followed by a full body massage. Despite my requests, some therapists will use a light touch approach instead of a deep muscle approach that I prefer. So if you are not getting the kind of massage you are expecting, either make clear your requests or switch with other massage therapists. Of all the massage therapists I had, Kimberly is the best in meeting my needs. I would recommend her if you need some muscle tightness to be worked out. She has experienced hands, knows how to leverage her palms and arms, and was very capable in working out the knots and soreness in my body. I now make all of my future massage appointments with Kimberly. read more

I had requested deep and got that but I was not quite happy with my foot massage. I might have been expecting more but was disappointed specially since I requested it specially. Despite the discouraging reviews, I decided to try ME for my first ever prenatal massage. What I expected: to start off laying on one side, then switch to the other. Focus on problem areas with some full body work. What actually happened: I stayed on my left side the whole time. Steve worked almost exclusively on my lower back, mostly on my right side. He spent the last 5 minutes or so on my calves. I was so relaxed, I fell asleep for a few minutes which I rarely do during massages. Still, I left with mixed feelings due to not having any upper body or thigh work done. But 24 hours later, I still feel great without any lower back or calf pain that was bothering me the last few days. If you're comfy with a male therapist, I recommend trying Steve. The front desk was really nice as well. I didn't encounter any of the pushiness others have mentioned. They don't even ask for your email on the intake form. The receptionist that made my appointment was very friendly and the young lady that checked me out gave me the schpiel about membership but did not push me when I said I'd have to think about joining. read more

Hello, called this morning because I threw my back out playing golf. I have been a Massage Envy client for many years, but I do not go that often. No problem over the phone but once I showed up at 6:30 pm on a Saturday they said my account was suspended. Not once but multiple times. I asked OK given that what can I do right now, the lady continued to say my account was suspended for failure to pay since June. I have not been to the place since January at least, so I asked what can I do right now since my appointment was suppose to start, she said again that my account was suspended and I only had 1/2 a credit. I asked why they did not tell me this when I made the appointment. Again, in front of other people she says you account is suspended and I need to take that up with the Columbia office. Seriously, multiple times of or your account is suspended and we can not help you because you home location is closed was not helping. Also continuing to state how my account was suspended for failure to pay was not in any way helpful, I had another credit card to put on file, and this should have been brought up at the time of booking not 5 minutes before the appointment. If there is a problem with the account do not book the appointment the day of, do not make the appointment, have me drive 20 mins and then announce to all the people in the room that my account is suspended. Wonderful massage but don't like the sales tactics they try to push on you at the end of your treatment. The last thing you want to do is get hassled after you've had 45 minutes of bliss. Im not sure why another reviewer gave it 1 star for getting spam email and people calling to offer specials. I get spam email from everyone. Best Buy, Target, Amazon.com, etc.. its the nature of RETAIL BUSINESS. JUst opt out. Its not even that franchise's fault.. blame the corporate headquarters for that. 700 franchise locations nation wide. I had Kim the first time - VERY friendly. Professional. Nice massage. I had Joe Z the 2nd time.. and although I only went to Joe because Kim wasnt free im staying with Joe! I have alot of scar tissue and issus from surgeries in my back. He worked em free. He is the ONLY massuese to have actually helped me out. He also does this weird Thai massage that is incredible. Hes real friendly too. I have another appt made for Joe at the end of the month. I have read several reviews about other franchises.. well each Subway is run differently. Some good some bad. Until now, this location of massage envy has been good. Friendly staff up front. Not pushy. And great massages (especially Joe). So until I run into issues or problems, my review will stay at 4 stars. Best be sure if i get harrased or pressured into extending my membership, or they do funny business with my credit card - if its not resolved quickly ill go to the BBB and change my review on here. I loved getting my massage here, and I'll be back. The staff I worked with, Cate (?) and Kay, were wonderful. As it was my first time coming in, they requested I come in a bit early to fill out the paperwork so that Kay knew where my problem areas are. Cate was very friendly, and explained the entire process to make me feel at ease, and was exceptionally knowledgeable about what Kay was going to do with me. The waiting area was a little cramped, and the chairs/sofas felt a bit low, but otherwise comfortable. These were the only detractions, so all in all I was very pleased. Kay went over the process with me as well, and asked a few more questions regarding lifestyle and sleeping habits, and gave me some recommendations that have already helped a great deal. I thought it would be awkward, being mostly nude in front of a stranger, but Kay made sure that I was comfortable and never exposed, except for the body part being worked on. read more

My family comes here several times a month for the past couple of years. So actually many of the staff know my name and face. And they have always been respectful, kind, and caring. After my session this week, I was rudely confronted by a new hire after a session. And as she began to berate me her coworkers whom have provided me excellent customer service in the past watched on. I was appalled that they would allow someone with no customer service skills to be the first point of contact for their business. And after the other co workers watched the exchange, only one had the intuition to take over the matter. After that i was visibly upset and when i told them that, the rude new hire reponded with okay bye. And started smiling and told me to have a nice day. Not one other employee cared that this person treated me with indecency in front of my family and other customers. I immediately called the corporate number (az) to get to the bottom of this, i have not had a response since and can say that i will be transferring our memeberships else where. To me this was an act of racial bias as i could see the new hire's personality change abruptly when dealing with the other white patrons and the white members of my family. And her nonchalant attitude to my distress was anxiety inducing and counter productive to the purpose of my visit. Needless to say I will be contacting the BBB if coporate doesnt respond. read more

I've only received one other massage previously, and was in lots of pain with muscle tension in my back so I decided to go in to Massage Envy as I've heard about and/or driven by their locations for a while now. I needed an appointment the same day, and called around 2 PM to several Massage Envy locations, but the Frederick location was the only one with availability that day. I had my massage scheduled at 8 PM. I arrived at 7:45 as instructed, did some paperwork, and was led to a tranquility room to relax before my massage. At around 7:55, Paula came to get me, and my massage was amazing! Paula was friendly, courteous and really cared about making me feel comfortable and helping ease my back pain! She focused on my back and used ample time to reach other areas to complete a full body/targeted combination massage- I can't say enough good things about Paula. I knew about the membership option, but wasn't pressed at the end to feel like I had to sign up- the receptionist asked if I knew about it, gave me a brief summary and asked if I was interested. I knew going in that I would probably sign up to help with my back pain if the massage was good, and I did end up signing up! If you find the massage therapist that works for you/have a good experience, and you know going in that membership is an option, I don't think you can beat a $69.99 massage every month... My doctor told me years ago that I was going to have to quit my job due to stress. I had should and neck pain, could barely turn my head, and my back was a mess. I joined Massage Envy and as long as I get a massage at least monthly, I am able to carry on with my normal activities without pain! I was even able to keep my stressful job. The therapists are amazing. Massage Envy also gives me a reason once a month to do something for myself so my mental health improves as well as my physical health. Can't beat it! read more

I received a massage gift for Mother's Day and decided to finally use it. The experience from beginning to end was so positive. The staff are warm, friendly, and responsive. I had Missy as my massage specialist and she was wonderful. She really helped with the back of my neck and stretched it really well. I would highly recommend her! It was hands down the worst massage I have ever received and hope to receive. The therapist did not know their right from left on more than three occasions despite my correction 2+ times at each occasion. There wasn't a single smooth pass over the musculature. There was not a single pass from origin to insertion if the muscles. There were several occasions in which the therapist was pushing onto my spinous processes and ileum instead of the musculature and the corresponding attachments. The masseuse didn't understand what flexion, extension, side bending and rotation of the neck was. I specifically said not to put my neck into extension prior to the massage beginning (due to medical reasons) and that was done throughout the last third of the massage. The pressure was asymmetrical the entire time as well. I debated leaving midway throughout the massage but didn't want to be rude. Unfortunately, it only got worse and now I have a massive headache and my back and neck feel worse than when I came in. If you have a background in medicine or athletics or simply know what a good massage should feel like and are aware of your anatomy I would NOT go here. It is worth the gas money to drive somewhere else. I am sure there are some good Masseuses is there but unfortunately that was far from my experience. read more

I've been a member for two years. There are a lot of good therapists at this location. I like deep tissue massages, and at least two have more than exceeded my expectations, being both strong and gifted at finding the right spots. If you don't like your therapist, try a few until you find one that works for you. I also enjoy being able to use my membership when I travel. My wife and I have booked appointments from Sonoma California to New York City and places in between, all using our member credit. read more

Not only did my massage therapist give me a really great massage, but she also gave me valuable tips on how to prevent the tension I was getting that were easy fixes to my everyday routines. She also listened and used just the right amount of pressure and focused on the spots that needed the most attention. BUYER BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE. We moved out of the area from where I had signed up at Potomac Yards Massage Envy, to a town that does not have one and forgot that I had this membership. Before I knew it, 19 massages had racked up before my credit card expired. Now I am trying to "Use" them. I had to re-activate my membership (so they can start charging me again!!). Then they tell me I can gift some of my extras, but oh by the way there is an extra $10.00 charge for that. For this sign up there is no clean paper trail, no agreement with the fine print spelling out your obligations. Every time I call I get a different person and a different set of rules and charges! Buyer beware, If you think you can make your massage every month, good for you, but if you fall behind, it will be hell to catch up and they keep charging you all the way. There is no way to pause the charges until you catch up!!! Poor business practice for the customer. I am now faced with trying to get 19 massages within a 3 month period before I can close my account, Otherwise I face losing $500.00 or more! read more

I just went there for my first massage and invited my friend as part of her birthday present. It was amazing!!! That hour went by too fast though...I didn't want to leave yet! My friend and I loved it so much we immediately asked to sign up as members. It's inexpensive enough for our taste and that means at least one massage a month. My masseuse was Misti and my friend's was Kimberley. They are keepers for us!!! I look forward to trying out their facials too! As someone who frequently visits here I'd like to set the record straight about a few things people are complaining about. First of all, for the select people trying to say "beware" about memberships, you are ever so carefully leaving out the fact that there is an option to freeze payments on your account for up to half a year (and yes, they inform you of this every time!!!!) and the fact that Massage Envy, especially this location in particular, has worked with COUNTLESS people to help them with payments. Nor do they even pressure you about joining in the first place! Just because you can't make your payments doesn't give you the right to attempt to tarnish this company and location's good name; especially when they are indeed more than willing to work with you. The therapists and front desk associates are all wonderful people who will ALWAYS get my business. This location is by far one of the best. read more

I walked in there today for an introductory massage. I decided to get the 90 minute massage. They gave me Kimberly. My appointment was at 12 noon and since she was running late the girl at the desk said she would still give the 90 minutes. She started at about 12:15 p.m. I wrote on the IPAD my issues but she did not go over anything I wrote or asked questions. I then got on the table. She knows I was very tight but she gave a very soft massage. She should have ended the massage at 1:45 p.m. but ended it at 1:30 p.m. I feel like she rushed through it. I definitely told the front desk about the time frame and they apologized. I will definitely not go back to her. read more

Went to massage envy for the first time last Friday and was very much impressed. The front desk staff were friendly and atrentive. My appointment started right on time. My massage therapist was Kimberly and she was absolutely wonderful. She went over what I had booked for my appointment and asked me plenty of questions so she could recommend the proper service for me. The massage itself was absolutely fantastic, I'm pretty sure Kimberly has magic hands. This was my first true deep tissue type massage. It wasn't painful at all and I left feeling much better. I felt loose and I was in significantly less pain than I had been in when I walked in. Also the online booking is great. I woke up at 6am to get my kid off to school and booked an 8:30am appointment right on the website. The app is also super convenient but I didn't have that until after I booked my appointment. I also signed up for the membership for the cheaper services as I plan to return, at the very least, once a month. read more
