My mom and I got some great massages here for a slightly-after-Christmas present. Here's how our pro vs. novice experiences went down: FIRST-TIMERS: It was my mom's first time at a ME, so she had to fill out all the preliminary paperwork. They were very thorough and a staff member even came over to go over the paperwork and asked if she had any more questions or concerns. Her masseur was very good and she said his massage was better than the last one she had gotten at a fancy hotel in Asheville. They convinced her to become a monthly member, and since she was added to my plan, she gets them for $49/month instead of $59. MEMBERS: This location is big with lots of rooms. There is a member's lounge with some couches, a water cooler and a bowl of candy. When I booked an appt. over the phone, they said it was at 4:15. After arriving earlier than that and waiting til about 4:20, I asked where the masseurs were. This was the first I heard that my appt. was actually at 4:30. I was disappointed that it still ended up starting late (about 4:45) but the service was great and I think the masseur did still work for 50 minutes. When we were checking out, the staff told me that I got a free hour long massage added to my account for referring my mom. Score! read more

This location is absolutely horrible. Ive been there a total of three times. Twice there has been mistakes from no one opening up the store to calling me to reschedule and have me come in with no one available to do the massage. I know my review won't make a difference but I want it to be heard. I don't usually go to Massage Envy for my massages but my daughter bought me a $50 gift card for Mother's Day so I proceeded to go online and make an appointment for a massage and I signed up for 60 min for $75.00. I was expecting to have to pay $25 out of pocket and then a tip (No problem). After getting there I wrote on my profile that I wanted a deep massage and told the women 2 times to go harder because I was used to a deep massage and she never would. She finished 7 minutes early and it was the worst massage ever and when it ended my neck was as tight as when I arrived. Then to say the least I went to pay my $25 and she said I owed $75. I said I had a gift card and she said that's after the gift card. I said I thought that was the total amount and she said "no, your not a member". I NEVER saw a message on the website about paying $125 when I signed up for the massage. Needless to say I will NEVER EVER go back there again! Just FYI to people who ever wanna cancel their monthly payment with Massage Envy. My mother recently passed away which put me strapped for money have to pay funeral expenses because she had no insurance, I contacted them to suspended my draft until I was able to come back. They refused to cancel it an said if I didn't put another card on file they would keep drafting the $75 regardless of whether or not I came in for the massage. They have been trying to charge me everyday to that account since then to the fact I have to keep no money in there or they will take it. Now they are trying to draft $150 even tho I have asked the repeatedly to stop. They will not stop drafting your account no matter what you say. You'll have to end up canceling your card or bank account to get them to stop. I will never go back to them for any reason read more

In today's world I do everything that I can to support businesses and make sure that I show up to my appointments. Today I encountered a unique situation when my fiancé and I were on our way to our appointments and got a call that a close contact had tested positive for COVID. Though we had no symptoms ourselves, we called immediately to let staff know upon finding out. Unfortunately this happened to be right as our appointments were supposed to be starting. We felt that even though we have no symptoms ourselves, we shouldn't risk potential spread to our awesome therapists, staff, and other customers. Upon calling in, we were informed that we would be charged full price for the services booked, and were given no alternatives. I understand that workers need to be paid, and we were happy to still tip our therapists generously for their expected work and time, but I can't understand why we were penalized for trying to do the right thing here, with no alternatives given. My husband and I had a couples massage on 12:17:19. When I booked, they asked if we had been there before, which we had (my husband had a 6month membership at one time). The website says an hour massage is $65. That's the introductory price, but it never says what the price is for a returning customer. Turns out it's $95 EACH!! I suppose I never asked the right questions...but it seems as if they punish you for returning (and not having a membership). Very dishonest !!!! We went into a contract for the better prices and was told we could could cancel anytime.. WRONG!!! You can defer payments for 6 months not cancel. The contract wasn't explained to us in a very clear way and we was being rushed. Fortunately we was able to get out of the contract but was told they couldn't refund the money. There are very few times that I give a "1" star. The service/business has to be incredibly bad or dishonest for me to do so. This certainly fits the criteria. Let me say that I have had many, many massages---from San Francisco, to SC, to Thailand, to numerous other states and countries. I have also been reviewing on Yelp since 2007. Thus, I believe that I have a certain measure of credibility. While visiting relatives in SC, I overheard a commercial about paying $150 for gift cards and getting a massage for myself for free. Knowing Christmas was coming up, prior to purchasing the deal, I asked if they had an opening for 2 people on the Saturday following Christmas. They did so I booked appointments and bought the "deal." We then discussed type of massages, whether we wanted the couple's room, and was reminded to get there early so that my husband and I could complete the paperwork. Fast forward to Saturday: We arrive early and are told that we have no appointments. When asked who made them, I point to a person standing there. She then proceeded to indicate that I was not telling the truth and that I had never booked appointments, only purchasing the gift cards. Now, to be honest, this really irritated me since the massage was part of my Christmas present to my husband and because I specifically told her that I would not buy the gift cards unless they had a Saturday appointment. I am not sure what part of saying this, telling her we would take the 2 1:30 p.m. slots, indicating we would take the couple's room, and telling her what type of massage we wanted would ever be misconstrued to mean that we did not "book" an appointment, especially when given a credit card to purchase the gift cards and hold the appointment. All she had to say was that she goofed. I would not have been happy but I would have gotten over it. To say that it was my fault when I had made a special trip there to book the appointment only caused my blood to boil. Driving roundtrip over 1 hour and 20 minutes for my massage only increased my ire. A business is only as good as its service. Needless to say, while the massage therapists are incredibly important, the front desk can destroy a business, especially one in the "optional" service business. Dishonest business practice,bought a gift card for wife's birthday and when she decided to redeem it they told her it expired after six months which was not Mentioned on the card or anywhere. When I bought it there was no mention Of this rule so they sad that there was no longer funds on the card and won't even try to resolve the issue. Corporate office contact info is not available SO GOOD LUCK on that. The masseuse and massages were actually really good! I very much enjoyed the experience, however....the scheduling and billing is a nightmare. I understand "mix ups" can happen and we are all human. So a "mix-up" occurred and they did the right thing and offered some free add-on services, of our choice and were very professional about it and took ownership that is was their fault...but then the billing started. I got charged for everything and nothing was free. When I called to inquire, the Manager is the only one that is allowed to make refunds and I am still waiting. I believe in second chances so I will go back, but they really need to get it right the first time. read more

Take heed before signing a contract for a membership with this location. It is indeed a contract - not just a membership agreement. Their front desk sales associates will tell you that you can cancel at any time (they told me repeatedly to my face that what I was signing was NOT a contract and can be cancelled with 30 days written notice at any point), but it is not the truth. You can only cancel after a full calendar year with them, if you move to a location where there is not a Massage Envy within 25 miles of your new home or receive a doctor's note that says you cannot participate in their clinic services any longer. If you ask to be released from the contract, the manager will refuse. They will tell you they can only go by what you signed. Massage Envy is more of a financial drain and scam than any place I have been. I was a member here at four or five years ago and my husband bought me a gift card for Valentine's Day. The card was $55 which should've been more than enough and as I left today from using the card they charged me an additional $40 because it was not a first visit. My husband is furious and this is my only way to get the word out. I quit five years ago because I watched them steal six or seven visits right out of my sisters account and not let her use what she had paid for. I can see nothing has changed. They might've mentioned to him this possibility when they sold him a gift card. buyer beware. read more

My membership got cancelled without my knowledge due to employee error and I had to pay full price $190 after the service was provided. The service representative was unhelpful and even sociopathic, showing no regret or empathy!!! I hate to speak I'll of a business, but I don't want anyone else to get duped. Rip off! Company collected over $500 on the monthly plan, which is fine, but once I called to cancel they informed me that I only had 1 month to use the 10 services left. I was unable to do 10 massages in a month, who can, and they cancelled the membership at 12:00am on the last day of the month and did not even allow me to try to get a service on that day. The Massage Therapist are great but I would stay far away as possible from their monthly scam. I guess that is why they currently have a lawsuit on them about this same situation. read more

Buyer Beware!!! My initial visit was fantastic. The masseuse was professional, friendly and very skilled. I decided to sign up for a 6-month membership that involved 1 monthly visit along with discounts on additional visits. The service was exceptional every time. The monthly payments were set up for auto-draft from my checking account. At the end of the 6 months I decided I no longer needed the membership so I called the office to cancel. The very next month when I received my bank statement I noticed that I was still being charged. When I called the local office they said that I hadn't cancelled in the correct way. I went to the company's website, followed the directions which involved writing a letter of cancellation. I did that and hand delivered it to the office. I didn't quite trust them after that so I informed my bank of the situation and told them to decline any further auto-drafts. A month later I got a call from Massage Envy saying they could not process my payment... I went a few rounds with them before getting them to leave me alone. A year later I checked my credit and found that they had reported the entire 6 month's membership fees to a collection agency (even though it had been paid). When I disputed the negative collection, the credit agency responded that Massage Envy said it was valid and would not remove it. My daughter was surprising me with a massage for my birthday and they told her I use to pay $79.99 which I did years ago for two people! They sold my young daughter an hour massage for $79.99 instead of the introductory price $49.00. Rip Off!! I was furious when I heard this so I called them to get her a refund which she had just purchased 15 mins earlier and they would not. I would give this massage away before I step foot back in there. I left them because the good staff quit and the massages started lasting 35-40 mins but I am paying for an hour. I see why now, they are nothing but crooks!!! Be careful what you sign. They won't let you terminate your contract at the end of the 12 months unless you do it in person and one of their managers must be present (I assume that is so they can talk you out of it). Make sure to read the reviews that are "not recommended", they are more recent and more accurate than the fluffy reviews from 2010. Especially the ones about their business practices and how they treat their employees. I had a friend from school warn me about how she was treated at the front desk, and then I saw firsthand the attitude towards the clients, how they have brainwashed the massage therapists to work during their "down time" which is NOT PAID, and then knit pick the new therapist apart and tattle to the manager and get them fired over trivial things. My husband bought me 3 massages for a Christmas gift. I went in February and got my first massage. Today, I called to make an appointment for my second massage and she said my membership was expired on March 20. My husband paid two hundred dollars for this gift and had a gift card with 23$ dollars left on it. I asked her, "Why wasn't I told in February that I had a membership that expired on March 20"? She replied," Your husband signed a contract".I asked her if there was anything I could do to renew my membership. She said, I'm the manager and the computer will not allow me to renew it and save your other 2 massages. In my opinion, it is good business practice to communicate to your customers. She should've said Mrs Brondell, its already February, you only have until March the 20th to receive your other two massages so don't let them pass u by. Anything to make the customer aware of the deadline. This is where Massage Envy gets you...it's all about the money and who cares if a customer spent two hundred dollars and only received one massage. If this company doesn't cater more to customer awareness it will continue to have unsatisfied customers. I went on $10 pass a friend gave me after not having any massages for over a year. Therapist Luonne was great. However don't go here if you don't want to deal with the hard sell to join their membership. If $60 every month is not in your budget just go to an independent therapist or a spa that doesn't sell memberships so you won't get into something you can't afford. I really liked the therapist and was already considering booking with her again so I hemmed and hawed a bit and they offered to reduce the 12 month contact to 6 months with still a free add'l massage and no enrollment fee (surely no one ever actually pays that?). I signed up figuring it was a decent deal (and only bc I can afford it) and would be good for my recurrent back and hip pain to get regular massages for a while, as doing so has helped in past. My technician was great and very nice! I was not impressed with my overall experience. I'm sure if I lived in Spartanburg, I would go out of convenience. I found out from one of the technicians that the owner does not provide medical insurance for his employees. Other Massage Envy locations do provide this for their employees. This can make a difference in quality of service because it affects employee morale. I got the feeling that the morale was way down at this location. I have been to three other massage envy's in two different states and I can tell that there is a different type of work environment here. Also, the tip suggestions are MUCH lower than what I normally see. I wouldn't complain because I hate tip suggestions anyway, but it was an observation. It's hard for me to support a business that doesn't seem to care for their employees. That's why I rarely go to Wal-mart. It tells me that the owner is either disinterested in his business or doesn't care about his employees. I would love to revisit in a few months to find out that the situation has improved. read more

I agree with Sage T. about their business practices. I love my therapists and have been going to Massage Envy for over 2 years. My experiences with the therapists have always been wonderful. The front desk, however, is quite different. I was treated well until I had some questions about billing and their membership policies. It all started when after months worth of visits, I finally relented and I became a member along with a couple of my friends. That was a mistake. I was locked into it. At one point, I had numerous "massages" built up because of my busy schedule and after a year of membership, I asked if I could hold on to the ones that I had (which were numerous and paid for) and stop the automatic withdrawal of more money causing me to accumulate even more hours worth of massages. In the end, I was informed that if I withdrew my membership, I would lose the ones that I had stored up. I was very disappointed and felt as if I had been deceived. I hope that for the sake of the clients and their therapists, they change their policy. Few people have money to throw away in this economy. read more
