Overestimate a swim teacher, and somebody could drown. I feel confident giving Foss 5 stars. We have had several teachers over the weeks for various reasons and almost all have been really great. Julia, Jennifer, Dayonara and Jeremy have all been fantastic. My kids have made such great progress, it is mind blowing. They seem a little pricey but there are options to keep costs down if you can be flexible with your schedule. And frankly, all swim schools may be pricey now, I have no idea. It is always clean, and safe. Everybody is in such a good mood. A great environment for kids. Highly recommended.

After the 3rd time taking the same class, I was denied the "swimmers guaranteed". Which states that if your swimmer repeats a level 2x they will be offered assistance the 3rd time. If they have to repeat the level a 4th time, it's is supposed to be "on us". I'm being told that because two of my sons attempts at the level were "camps" ie 4x a week for 2 weeks and 4x a week for a month, that I didn't qualify for extra help in his 3rd go round because "camps don't count" and likewise the 4th "on us" session per the technicality. I have been at the school for numerous turnovers that have directly affected the quality and consistency of their programs. I have never once complained. Now, when my son is struggling, I have been shown no understanding or treatment like a valued customer of 8 years. Shame on you.

One of my friends told me to check this place out, which was only a couple miles away from me. She loved their classes (she did Yoga, Pilates, and some kind of ab class) and thought I'd benefit from their facilities, especially the track. Although the Centre has a membership fee for the machines & classes, I was able to use the track for free since I was a resident (at the time). That was all I needed. I loved it! The track was clean and never too crowded. I don't think a lot of people realized what a gem this place was. I went at different times during the day and enjoyed running quietly by myself or alongside my husband (he came with me a couple times). Lockers are also available next to the track with keys. I also walked around the Centre and saw two nice pools, climbing wall, new & clean machines, and several rooms for classes. The only downside is that the parking garage is kind of narrow and you have to watch out for cars coming around the corner. It's hard to find parking sometimes, but at least the garage is attached to some kind of indoor bridge over the street so you don't have to walk across the street. I also came here once for some kind of green festival and really enjoyed all the displays, booths, taste samples, art, and petting zoo! Many parts of Elgin are really run-down but this is one part of Elgin that shines. If it wasn't for the Centre (and the library nearby), I wouldn't have been complete.

Good Instructors but Overcrowded and Not Much Progress…read more I feel like I can give a fair review of Big Blue Swim School because my kids went there for about two years, starting when they were in first and third grade. The setup is nice--they divide kids by age and skill level and test them on different swim skills throughout their sessions, which last about 45 minutes. All of the swim instructors were consistently kind and patient. We never had an issue with any of them personally. However, one of the biggest downsides was the class size. Sometimes there were too many kids in a single swim lane with just one instructor, which meant my child might only get about 10 minutes of actual instruction in the entire 45-minute session. They do run promotional pricing, which is nice at first, but once that ends, it gets expensive. My son eventually reached a higher level where he wasn't learning anything new, and my daughter stayed at the same level for months even though she was clearly improving. It seemed like they didn't track the younger kids' progress as closely, possibly because the classes were overcrowded. The facility itself is clean, and the locker rooms were always well-maintained. Parking can be a bit tricky since the lot is shared with several other businesses, and you definitely need to book classes well in advance--especially the earlier sessions, which tend to be smaller and less chaotic. One thing I wish they focused on more was water safety and survival skills, not just swimming technique. Overall, it's an okay place, but I'd give it a solid three stars--nothing more, nothing less.
