One of my friends told me to check this place out, which was only a couple miles away from me. She loved their classes (she did Yoga, Pilates, and some kind of ab class) and thought I'd benefit from their facilities, especially the track. Although the Centre has a membership fee for the machines & classes, I was able to use the track for free since I was a resident (at the time). That was all I needed. I loved it! The track was clean and never too crowded. I don't think a lot of people realized what a gem this place was. I went at different times during the day and enjoyed running quietly by myself or alongside my husband (he came with me a couple times). Lockers are also available next to the track with keys. I also walked around the Centre and saw two nice pools, climbing wall, new & clean machines, and several rooms for classes. The only downside is that the parking garage is kind of narrow and you have to watch out for cars coming around the corner. It's hard to find parking sometimes, but at least the garage is attached to some kind of indoor bridge over the street so you don't have to walk across the street. I also came here once for some kind of green festival and really enjoyed all the displays, booths, taste samples, art, and petting zoo! Many parts of Elgin are really run-down but this is one part of Elgin that shines. If it wasn't for the Centre (and the library nearby), I wouldn't have been complete.

The center was clean from the inside lockers to the pool area. I think the biggest complaint is that it was very crowded, but it was a really hot 90-degree day, so I get it. It's worth a visit.

She was in front of the blue line which is less than 2ft, I was watching and she was wearing a vest. The manager came over to tell me they are not babysitters (I didn't ask for one) and she had to have a parent in the water with her. I asked where are the signs indicating this rule. They pointed to a wall of fine prints. I asked can I have a refund since I did not want to go in the water, they said no. The safety/survival stuff they teach gives me peace of mind, which is huge! My kids love going every week, their instructors are amazing especially Jennifer! Good Instructors but Overcrowded and Not Much Progress…read more I feel like I can give a fair review of Big Blue Swim School because my kids went there for about two years, starting when they were in first and third grade. The setup is nice--they divide kids by age and skill level and test them on different swim skills throughout their sessions, which last about 45 minutes. All of the swim instructors were consistently kind and patient. We never had an issue with any of them personally. However, one of the biggest downsides was the class size. Sometimes there were too many kids in a single swim lane with just one instructor, which meant my child might only get about 10 minutes of actual instruction in the entire 45-minute session. They do run promotional pricing, which is nice at first, but once that ends, it gets expensive. My son eventually reached a higher level where he wasn't learning anything new, and my daughter stayed at the same level for months even though she was clearly improving. It seemed like they didn't track the younger kids' progress as closely, possibly because the classes were overcrowded. The facility itself is clean, and the locker rooms were always well-maintained. Parking can be a bit tricky since the lot is shared with several other businesses, and you definitely need to book classes well in advance--especially the earlier sessions, which tend to be smaller and less chaotic. One thing I wish they focused on more was water safety and survival skills, not just swimming technique. Overall, it's an okay place, but I'd give it a solid three stars--nothing more, nothing less.

In the end, the school cancelled the time slot my daughter was in and with no notice, the only teacher that was teaching in a way that I began to see progression, was no longer with Goldfish. :/ I still think the facility is nice, but I've taken a star away, b/c, at least for independent toddlers, I personally wasn't crazy about the revolving teachers we had when we tried to continue on and felt that sometimes the teens weren't equipped to handle the energy of a toddler like an older instructor might.
