My dog, Leonardo, had such a great experience at Masterpiece!! The space is lovely, so calm and relaxing for dogs, and the owners dropping them off =) Staff is great, they showed me around the spa and assured me Leo was in good hands. My dog is super apprehensive about nail cutting (we typically take him to the vet and they do it in the back) so I didn't expect Masterpiece to have any luck...I was shocked & so happy to see that Leo had his nails cut when I went to pick him up!! Brought my dog here for a bath and nail trimming. It was amazing. He loved (didn't want to leave), his fur was super soft and shiny and his nails were amazingly well-trimmed and rounded up so as to prevent any scratching. Amazing service, especially during Covid. I called 7 different dog grooming companies and Abby was one of only 2 who even called me back! She was timely in her response and SO friendly to speak with. I immediately felt comfortable leaving my older yorkiepoo with them. She was even able to get me in for a same day appt (super impressed). A super important note that I LOVE about this spa is that they do NOT crate dogs all day. It's express appts, meaning they start on your dog immediately at appt time and text you let you know when they will be done and you can come pick up your dog. It's a nice open clean space. I got to talk directly with the groomer who worked on my dog about what I wanted and they even sent me pics of her right after she was done. I'm blown away at the EXCELLENT customer service and how they go the extra mile to ensure my baby had a stress free experience. Nothing a dog owner does excuses how they treated my dog. I brought in my small maltese-poodle mix, and they gave her the closest haircut she's ever had. They scolded me for not getting her haircuts enough (I had to wait over a month for them to have space for an appointment), but my dog's matting does not excuse their behavior. They handled my dog so roughly, she developed steatitis, trauma to the fat in her belly. Her appointment was March 1, and she still has significant trauma on her belly caused by this facility. I am posting another review, since I am unable to respond to this business owner's rebuttal to my first review. I will start with Abby's claim that my dog was not regularly groomed. He was groomed every month in New Jersey. I had just moved from NJ to DC not even 30 days before I brought him to Masterpiece. If you would like to verify this, Abby, since that is your new "policy," the groomer's name is Clarice at Purr 'n Pooch in Tinton Falls, NJ. He did not have a matted coat, since he was just at his regular groomer not even a month before I brought him in. As for you claiming he had not had a proper blowout in over a year, this is simply untrue as well. Again, this was done every month at the groomer named above. Due to Harley's consistent grooming, you claiming that it would take 5-6 hours to trim him is outrageous. We have only ever trimmed the back of his legs and the area around his butt. You did call me to tell me he was tired, and I was 2 doors down from your business at Pet Smart. I came immediately. What you left out when you called me, is that he could not walk anymore due to the grooming he was given. Three of you had to carry him out to me, and then he dropped to the ground unable to use his back legs. The conversation where you're claiming I told you to "keep going," never happened. I would never want my dog to be tortured in order to finish a grooming. Everyone that was carrying him out looked extremely guilty and nervous. I want to reiterate to you and everyone else that Harley jumped out of the car when we arrived and could not walk when you were done with him. Now let's cover your claim that you called my vet and found out he has had a multitude of health issues and surgeries. Harley had arthritis in his hips. When we spoke on the phone before I brought him, I had an extensive conversation with you about his age and his hips and the need for special care. You assured me that you could handle it. Harley has never had a single surgery, and you are telling bold face lies to protect your business and reputation. It's a shame that you had to hurt my dog so severely that it led to his death in order for you to recognize the need to create these new policies. I noticed here that you only reply to the negative reviews of your business. It seems that you take a lot of time to draft these elaborate responses. My dogs are nervous since they're rescues but this groomer did an amazing job with them. They were finished with both (two Corgis) in less than 2 hours and they were happy and their grooming is still fresh a few weeks later. Will certainly be back for their next session. All told with tip we paid $200 for two Corgis with a deshedding treatment and a teeth brushing. They even got some super cute bandanas! read more

Best groomer we have gone to! We have a 70lb, 5 year old Goldendoodle who is a little skittish getting bathed and groomed. We have never felt good about his past grooming experiences - he always came back nervous and fretful, or in the worst case, sick! All that said, we are thrilled to find Masterpiece Spa. Not only did they do a wonderful job with our pup's cut, but he was happy and much less stressed after his appointment. The technicians only take one dog at a time, so your dog is only there as long as he or she needs to be and gets extra special care. The staff is super friendly and will text pictures and questions during the appointment. They also sent me a ~20 minute heads-up before our pup was finished, so I could pick him up right on time. I can't believe it has taken me so long to write this review. On November 29, 2020 (friday after thanksgiving) I picked up my new rescue Japanese Spitz from Newark airport and arrived back in DC very late at night. She is a survivor of the illegal Chinese dog meat trade and had been in a crate for about 20 hours. I've never had a dog with fur (only hair) and was completely unprepared for how matted she would be. She was caked in urine and feces. It was awful. She smelled horrific. I tried bathing her and cutting some of the worst of the mats but realized very quickly I was out of my depth. Masterpiece was the only place that even responded to my inquiry and they fit me in on Sunday even though they were completely booked and on a waitlist. They were so understanding and clearly wanted to help. During the grooming they used special ear muffs to muffle the sound so she wouldn't be scared--remember she had only just arrived in the US and everything, including the language was so foreign. When I picked her up she was like a new dog. She was so calm and clean, much happier. I can't recommend this place enough, they are wonderful. I had a upcoming appointment for my dog and had a EMERGENCY where I was admitted into the hospital....Once I got out the hospital I called Masterpiece told them my situation hence they charged me the full amount. I spoke with Abby to book another session and hoping they will waive the full session since I it was a Emergency, Abby never said anything. Once I brought my dog for the next session they charged me full price even though they saw my doctors note stating I was admitted in the hospital. Abby was pretty much saying someone should've called that day I'm like WHO I live in DC all by myself no family. If Abby would've told me on the phone I still had to pay I wouldn't have made the next session in the first place. When I finally received my dog he looked awful still has hair all over his face a beard it looks as if he hasn't been cut at all. Now I have to use my clippers and cut him myself. My puppy has only had two haircuts ever. This was his second experience and while he loved the affection his haircut was terrible. They cut his hair very low, almost completely off and left only a patch on the top of his head. The price was over the top. $145 plus I left gratuity for something I could have done myself. The explanation was that my dogs hair was matted. Not true. He is nature at fluffy and very soft. Some hair under his belly and around other places were matted. This is common because of their cleaning and bathroom usage. However, the style of cut I asked for was not granted and the price wasn't adjusted. Hair grows back but it will take some time. Masterpiece, the owner and employees are unprofessional, rude, and disrespectful to its patrons. More importantly, their grooming services are overrated and overpriced. Safe your earned cash, you will not enjoy the service, and neither will your pet. Today I had a grooming service for my dog. Due to unforeseen circumstances (thunderstorm and rain, which my pet dislikes immensely), I was running late and received a call from Masterpiece, and was rudely told that if I could not arrive within 15 minutes of my appointment, I needed to turn around and will get charged for the total amount. No matter how nicely I pleaded that the owner resorts to the business backup protocol to give my dog a trim, it was refused without an explanation. Remember I reserved and paid for 2 hours, and my dog was refused. This is unprofessional, distasteful, and outrageous. At the end of the day, as an owner of a dog and a business person, I fully expect that my dog and I are treated professionally and compassionately. The treatment I received was unexpected and surprising for a retail business and pet grooming service provider. Do yourself and other owners a favor by not using their service. The groomers are a hit and miss; sometimes, you get good grooming, but more often, your pet receives a less than satisfactory grooming, and if you return for a grooming correction, you are discouraged. I will never return and let everyone in the neighborhood know how unprofessional this business, owner, and employees act. Reply to owners remarks: Your response is deceptive and laughable. On Friday, the day of my appointment, I received a call at 9:13 AM, and at the time, I made it clear that I was on my way not far away. More importantly, I specifically asked you in a polite way to take my pet and give him a trim which you stated was the normal protocol under similar circumstances. Because my dog had not been to Masterpiece since June was because you had no availabilities and he had received a grooming six weeks earlier. You were aware that my pet had received a recent grooming in that you called me to fit him in about four to six weeks earlier and I told you he had received a grooming at another dog spa. Because I had an appointment, I asked you to keep it in place. Additionally, I asked you on several occasions in a polite manner to not charge my account without providing any grooming service. You rudely refused to accommodate any request for service and charged my account without my agreement of any of your policies. If my dog was groomed once at your business, I stand corrected but let me clarify that I was not overly impressed. I also take great offense at your accusations that I attempted to bully you in any form. On the contrary, your phone tone and unrelenting position not to accommodate my dog was rude, disrespectful and unprofessional. I've been to MCS to groom my puppy after some extensive research for groomers in the DC area. I love the fact that at Masterpiece, you can schedule your appt for your dog with hourly blocks. This versus what other groomers do which is have you drop the dog off all day and then pick them up at the end. I always thought this practice by the way was super weird -- it doesn't take the dog all day to get groomed... so why not have hourly booked appointments like any other salon? Anyway, the staff and team at Masterpiece are fantastic. I think it's clear that they love dogs and pets in general. I was incredibly nervous to drop off my 3 month old puppy at the time as it was her first professional grooming experience. But I could not have been more pleased with the results. Abby and her team of groomers took such good care of her and before the end when we picked her up, she was wagging her tail and was very happy. I now have gone back 3x and each experience is the same. They also provide really helpful tips on things that are outside of grooming -- like training and health tips that I found very useful. My puppers need his nails trimmed and his glands expressed, which is normally a quick visit to the vet, however they were only handling the more serious issues. Masterpiece to the rescue! They answered my email within the hour and after a quick call we had a spa day on the books. They handled both of these requests, as well as a bath (it was much needed) and he was in and out in less than an hour. The pup came back smelling amazing and the team was great to work with. My 45 lb pit mix was happy and calm (unusual for her because she's anxious and hates baths) and received the best de-shedding she's ever gotten--she hasn't shed at all in the week since her grooming. She's also been scratching less (they used a medicated shampoo that I didn't even know she needed), and her coat feels cleaner and softer than it has in years! Don't ever be late for drop-off or pick-up, or watch out! Don't ever bring a dog in with 'matted' hair, or watch out! Don't ever use a card one time and a different card another time, or watch out! Don't call on a smart phone and expect return calls - they claim to have left text on my house phone? They insist they will only accept dogs who get haircuts every 6 weeks. You must pay their price, submit to their schedule, whether it is convenient or not. At $150 a haircut I don't feel like taking in my mini wooly curly poodle every 6 weeks - so today I had to pay $25 penalty for hair that they called matted - that is $175 for what? having a dog whose hair under his legs and tail, where I usually do not brush, gets a little knotted up? They shaved his whole body, except the ears. There is no way he looks like a poodle. If you are rich enough to put up with this place, you are not going to appreciate the undesirable street conditions to pull up with a car, and then stand outside a gate. read more

UPDATE: Abby just loves a tit-for-tat, a day later and she's still trying to rehash the hour by hour of when my dogs had their symptoms. I have to say it was a shock to get her berating text messages while I was on the way to the vet with my sick dog, but this is a new low. Her response below really speaks for itself. No empathy at all, and customer service that entails telling clients that they're wrong and that she knows better than them about their dog's health or even like some sort of omnipresent god knows when someone's dog had their symptoms and didn't. Ultimately I think kicking someone when they're down says everything that needs to be said about Abby's character and that of her business. You can decide whether you trust her with your dogs. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Total lack of empathy, terrible customer service, and complete disregard for the health of the dogs in their care. I'm so genuinely sorry to have to write this review , but I think other people should be aware of this situation. We have been going to Masterpiece with our two dogs for many months and have been loyal customers. That all ended today when we discovered that both of our dogs were sick with some sort of viral infection. After hearing both of our dogs cough we decided that the smart decision would be to bring them to the vet and to cancel our appointment with Masterpiece with less than an hour's notice. When I called to inform them that the dogs were sick and that it was for the best that we keep them home so as to not infect other dogs they claimed that they understood but then proceeded to tell me that they were going to do me a favor and only charge me $100 for canceling last minute. Of course they have a strict cancellation policy and I understand why. But what makes zero sense to me and what I believe points to a complete disregard for the health of the dogs in their care is that when I informed them that my dogs were sick and probably contagious they proceeded to punish me for doing that. In other words, they incentivize people to not be transparent and to hide even infectious illnesses from them. Of course I didn't want my dogs to be sick, of course I wish I knew prior to just before our appointment, and of course I didn't want to have to take them to the vet. One of our dogs almost died of pneumonia, so I am particularly sensitive to handling these sorts of health issues before they get out of hand. So how did Masterpiece treat me? Adding insult to injury, after I told them I was disappointed with the charge they proceeded to engage in an argument with me via text message, as I was taking my sick dog to the vet, trying to explain to me why I was so wrong for feeling the way I felt. It was bizarre to say the least. That's what I call terrible customer service, not to mention a complete and total lack of empathy. Especially in today's world, businesses should be incentivizing people to be transparent about their dogs health so that they can avoid needless exposure to contagious illnesses for other dogs. Instead, Masterpiece insists on getting their fees and incentivizing the exact opposite behavior. What a shame! read more

My 6mo puppy, Nico had such a pleasant experience. Rachel was super friendly on the phone and even better in person! Katelyn was gentle and great with my puppy. The place is very clean with room for dogs to move around comfortably. Nico was the only dog there at the time as they take dogs by appointment, allowing him to receive one on one attention. A friend of mine who owns a local pet food and supply shop recommended Masterpiece Canine Spa (MCS) when I said I needed a place to go in DC. I have a very sensitive and sweet 7 year old dog who is used to extreme pampering by his current groomer, but she lives too far away for it to be convenient anymore. Not only is MCS convenient, but it is a place where I feel I can trust to take my little dude. They were accommodating, sweet, and made sure that we were comfortable leaving him there and that he was happy while getting groomed. They also sent photos. It was great. He loved it and will be back for grooming at MCS from now on. Love that there was not wait because of their appointment system. He was in and out in around an hour. AWESOME place. The people here are friendly but, as I learned, you can't expect to get the service you ask for at this groomer. When I set up an appointment for my four month old puppy to get her first haircut, the person who answered the phone said they suggest a "puppy cut" for a first visit (just around the feet and eyes). I told her that my dog's hair is long and on the verge of matting, and that she needs a haircut. She said "okay we'll put you down for a haircut then." When I arrived the groomer (Katelyn) again told me that they normally do a puppy cut for the first time so the dog doesn't get too scared. I again told her that I would like a haircut. She said that she would try to give her a haircut, if the dog wasn't too scared. Over an hour later, I got a text saying my dog was finished, and while on the way to pick her up, I got second text saying they didn't do a haircut this time. When I arrived, the groomer explained that my dog did okay, but was a little scared of the dryer and that "it's just a lot for a puppy to get a haircut on their first visit." I get that it's a scary experience, which is why I booked at a spa that only takes one dog at a time, doesn't crate, etc. However, I came for a haircut...because she needed a haircut. Though I understand and appreciate their concern, I would have assumed that (1) as the customer and parent, I get to be the one to decide how to introduce my puppy to getting a haircut, (2) if the groomer is going to take the liberty of making that decision for me, I would have at least received a call to discuss, prior to them telling me she was finished, or (3) that if things went down the way they did, they, at the very least, would have discounted the price of the service I didn't want. All of these assumptions were incorrect. I paid $75 for a bath and nail trim. I will be going elsewhere next time. read more

So this review has been long overdue. Masterpiece Canine Spa is the best place that I have ever had my animals groomed. I have a standard poodle, a rat terrier X rescue, and a long hair cat. In previous salons I had to wait 6 hr for my dogs to be done. Sometimes the results were not as glamorous. After Masterpiece Canine Spa, my standard poodle, who get grooms by Katelyn, always looks and smells incredible. Constantly has his picture taken and get complimented on the street. My rat terrier X, who is scared of strangers and isn't a fan of grooming, finally feels comfortable in a grooming salon. She loves all the staff. Never shakes dropping off and runs in every time we go there. My cat, who has had some really bad haircuts and gets stressed at the groomers came out looking amazing. Lauren handled him with complete ease. He looks amazing. All done in half the time, it usually takes for most grooming salons. The staff is a very knowledgeable, very professional, and always greets you and your pet with a smile. Definitely doesn't make your pet feel like it's just another dog or cat.
