I got my first tattoo here back in October 2013 as a walk-in. The artist never bothered to tell me his name which should have been a red flag, but I didn't know any better. He wasn't very personable. Not rude, but he was very quiet and clearly not into smalltalk of any kind. Thankfully another guy came in and struck up a conversation with me. He might have been another artist, I'm not sure. He never introduced himself either, but I remember he was in a wheelchair. My tattoo was pretty simple. It's just an outline of a flower with three arrows going through it on the top of my left foot. I followed the aftercare instructions I was given, and didn't wear socks or shoes that touched it for a couple of weeks. Once it was healed, I was so disappointed in it. The lines aren't tight and solid, and they're much thinner in some spots than in others. Now that I have better quality pieces on my body from a more friendly and professional shop, that disappointment has only grown. I would go back and have it touched up, but I don't even know who did my tattoo. And after all of the horror stories I've heard regarding the shop owner (and the Trump signs out front) I'd rather not set foot back in that shop. I'll have my new artist rework it. read more

This place has moved. The new address is 99 S. Broadway (Rt 28) just north of Barnes & Noble. I went today to get an estimate and was impressed with the cleanliness and appearance. I'll be back once I finalize my design & will rate it (had to assign some stars apparently to post). Update: got the work done but not real thrilled with it, and it needs a touch-up which I am going to get somewhere else. Uneven color, looks like he missed a few spots, a little blurring on linework (unsure if that's his fault or just my skin dealing with being injected with ink in thousands of tiny places). $130 but I would've gladly paid more for better work. Also not real thrilled with all the tea-party wingnut propaganda I didn't notice the first time; if I had, I wouldn't have gone back. Oh, cash only, and if you want to use a debit card they tack on a fee which I'm pretty sure is against the rules of VISA/Mastercard. I'm sure they'd gladly take gold/silver coins, though. read more

Got my second tattoo yesterday at Masterpiece and I love it. The reason I'm only giving them 3 stars is because the service was bad. This wasn't my first tattoo so I knew what to expect but the tattoo artist did not know that until we got into the room. I didn't even know his name until he gave me his card as I was leaving. I expected him to introduce himself and ask me if I had any questions before he started and none of that happened. He never went over any of the aftercare with me and just handed me a piece of paper as he was talking to two people who just came in. He didn't even try to find out if I liked his work. Other than my not so great experience with the tattoo artist, I really did like the place. Extremely big and clean. Lots of options for tattoos if you don't know what you want when you come in. They definitely know what they are doing. Overall, I'm happy with my tattoo. I'm pretty sure this is my last tattoo so I won't be going back to Masterpiece. I would recommend this place to other people but just not the person I was tattooed by. read more

I've gotten three tattoos here, and one industrial piercing. What I like about this place is that it's clean, well lit, and the staff is very professional. My last tattoo was my largest, and I'm not a huge fan of needles (I know, I know, I asked for it) so I don't usually enjoy watching the work-in-progress. This time the tattoo artist (I feel bad that I can't remember his name) popped "Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny" into a small television nearby, giving me something to concentrate on as ink was etched into skin. It was a small comfort, but very much appreciated. There's only so many ways a person can be distracted after an hour and a half. Each tattoo has healed beautifully, and I've always been impressed with the quality of work. I also feel that the prices are pretty fair. I have no reservations recommending this place, and when/if I decide to expand the work, I'll be returning to Masterpiece. read more

I got my first tattoo here six years ago. I was happy with the tattoo at the time but years later and now with more tattoos added on my skin. I've realized it's the poorest quality tattoo I have. It's a tiny tattoo but the lettering is uneven and off. Also, the guy who tattooed me was really quiet and didn't even introduce himself. They don't really care to make you feel comfortable when getting inked. I came back here recently to get an estimate on a new tattoo and the guy working the front desk was completely unknowledgeable. I showed him my simple (all lines) tattoo design and he said quote "I'm not sure how much this would cost actually." He then continued to estimate a ridiculously high price range and couldn't find time to set up an exact appointment date. I kept my cool and told him I would come back another day. I never came back. Oh and that day I went in for an estimate, the entire shop smelt like cigarettes. It was overwhelming and it seemed like someone had smoked right in the shop. read more

Had a tat there yesterday & the work itself is great. The reason for the 3 star rating is the lady at the front desk, not so great. I wanted to talk to artist & see his work but she was so hung up on not letting me even by considered till I picked a design & payed for it I almost left. Tattoos are artistry, before you put something on you that's going to be there forever is it so crazy to want to discuss it with the artist? It was a little too assembly line & that part I didn't like. My fault though, I wanted a tattoo that day & that's what you get for walk in I guess. As far as the artist, Tom did it and he is very good. His work is great, clean lines & he's a nice guy. This review is being written approx. 7 years after getting 2 tattoos done here by Tom. Mainly because I didn't know that Yelp was around, and because BOTH tattoos still look excellent (thanks to sunscreen & great line work). I also took my younger cousin here (she lied and told me it was ok for her to get a tatt...I later found out it wasn't and she was grounded) and it came out great. I'm not sure if Tom is still working here, but if he is, he's awesome. He also has a tv with DVD's to help distract you from the pain...it doesn't work but I love when shops try to help as much as they can. __________________________________________________________________________________ ::UPDATE Jan 2017:: Back in Nov 2016 I updated my review stating that they support Trump and I that wouldn't return. Keep in mind that I got pierced here 9 years ago, and they have moved locations and lost/gained artists since then. (Maybe even changed hands? Who knows?!) I went here to get an industrial in my ear, and the guy who did it was this super hot Irish guy with the sexiest accent ever. I was 16 years old (my dad came along for the paperwork) but I fell madly in love with this guy's voice, even though all he did was talk about Dial soap for about 15 minutes. I could have listened for another 15 years. The piercing was quick and as painless as it could have been. My only complaint is that the hole in my cartilage was a little too close to the edge and after about 6 years worked it's way out of the cartilage and was just under skin, so I had to take it out. Seriously though, if that Irish guy still works there, can someone let me know so I can go back and have him do my other ear? Maybe he can whisper sexy antibacterial nothings into my newly pierced left ear... read more

I gotten my belly pierced here and a tattoo. This place is the best! (Piercing about 5 years ago and tattoo about 3 years ago) I am planning on getting another tattoo too. This place is CLEAN and well priced. I've been to many places to watch my friends get their piercings and tattoos and they are NOTHING compared to Masterpiece. Belly Piercing experience- I forgot the girl's name since it has been forever but she was a professional. Very nice and clean. I didn't even feel the needle go through. So A+! Tattoo- I got a tattoo on my foot by Joe (I think that's his name if I recall correctly). He is extremely nice and did a pretty good job. My small tattoo was $60. To this day it still looks good. I don't even need to touch it up yet. read more

My first time here was about 6 years ago on a whim, we were up shopping at the mall and decided with my friend; Hey! I'm 18, I'll go get my tongue pierced. She had been to Masterpiece before and so we went there because she knew it and usually piercings and tattoos get business through word of mouth. I had a great experience; from what I remember. A girl did the piercing, awesome. I never remembered it actually hurting, when people ask me now; I say it didn't hurt when it happened. Yes my tongue swelled up and I sounded like a re-re for a week or so. But that's whatever, expected. The place is easy to get to and plenty of parking. It seriously looks/reminds me of a doctors office. Which is very positive and I think a good drawing point when you tell someone; Oh hey yeah I went here and it seriously looks like a doctors office. That means CLEAN! BRIGHT! HAPPY! All positives, coupled with the positive experience I had, means the person I tell; will most likely go there at some point. Good job boys and girls. Staff is also friendly, cute.. yay. Cute tattoo artists, you can't go wrong with that. And I'm saying this because at least there were last time I was there. So in 09, my sister turned 18 and she had wanted to get a tattoo; she thought about it and all that stuff, came up with something and then last year she was 19 and decided she definitely wanted to get it done. The places I go for mine, the minimum seemed too high for her design and so I said, Well hey I'll take you up to Masterpiece, we'll hit the mall do some shopping, lunch and get you a tattoo. We had called that morning and they said that the min was $50 so that was great. However when we got there, without asking about the design on the phone (two roman numeral numbers) they had said shed pay $90; which was ridiculous personally but we stayed; just because it was very small but they do numbers different. I can't imagine what they do for $50 now.. and the numbers aren't big at all, small and on her hip. Anyways, she liked it there. She liked that it was clean looking and it was her first tattoo experience and I was happy I got to share that with her. If the time/need/want of another tattoo came up for me, I'd go back. I don't live near NH so its not some place I'd choose first; but I would go if time permitted and I had another reason to be up there. read more

Terrible service. The work they do is pretty decent, but the hit I take to my self respect EVERY time I walk in this place is not worth it. The owner is a jerk and his wife is even worse. I got a tattoo from Masterpiece about 3 years ago...I recently went back, being generally happy with my tattoo and what a mistake. I was ignored for about 30 minutes until an unhappy man walked over and looked me up and down. His eyes lingered on my body too long and I was uncomfortable. I explained I wanted to get a small tattoo on my hip, the man made a crude joke and the whole staff laughed, even the woman, which was disturbing. The quote for the tattoo was $120.00. I tried to explain that my last tattoo was only $60.00 and was of equal size AND I had gotten it there. He laughed and made me feel stupid for asking. Me and my girlfriend left and got tattoos at a different tattoo shop in Salem. No good! read more

Wish I could give ZERO stars! I stopped in this afternoon looking for a place to maintain my recent piercing (done in another state), and to buy jewelry. Not only was the man working there rude and belittling, he insulted my piercer, questioned my reason for getting the piercing, and ultimately made me feel so terrible that I was brought to tears! He even tried to get rid of me by sending me to another place down the street!! Masterpiece lost a good customer today, but more importantly I will actively try to keep anyone I know from going there. No reason anyone else has to have this type of terrible experience! read more

One of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I went in as a very, very nervous newbie to get my nose pierced, and the piercer snapped at me when I asked him to explain everything he was going to do (which he still didn't do adequately, even after snapping at me), sighed and rolled his eyes and basically yelled at me for accidentally touching my nose after he cleaned it, and was very impatient and short. When he saw how nervous I was, he immediately told me I was only gonna make it worse on myself (possibly true) but said so in a very brusque, "I'm-only-saying-this-because-i-want-you-out-of-my-hair" tone of voice. He made me feel like an inconvenience to him, rather than a customer. I don't even know what his name was, since he never bothered to introduce himself to me. I'm sure his actual technique was fine, but he was so awful and rude I never got to find out. A veteran might be okay, but as a nervous newbie, I felt ignored and dismissed before I could even calm down enough to get excited about it. I will not be returning to Masterpiee. read more

Just got my 8th tattoo today, my 3rd at Masterpiece - I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. Today, Craig was phenomenal! Not only is his artistic ability second to none, but he was extremely personable and determined to ensure I was completely satisfied with every intricate detail throughout the entire session. If that wasn't enough, what truly impressed me was his level of integrity - after providing me with the price for his service, I naturally added ~30% to that as a tip. Craig refused such an amount! He said 10% was more than enough. I was, and still am, in absolute shock. It is clear he is a man who takes pride in his art and not simply one who can draw well, trying to make an extra buck. I would not even consider going anywhere else but Masterpiece and after tonight, I'm not sure I would want any other artist to work on me other than Craig. read more

Got a small lightning​ bolt tattoo here with some friends over the summer. Clean, quick, and thorough. Originally I wasn't sure if I'd come back for more tattoos because both the woman at the front and the artist​ were not the most friendly. Not necessarily rude, just not very patient to help with the nerves that accompany getting a tattoo. However, I saw photos of Dan's work and I decided to go back. I walked in hoping to make an appointment, but instead he fit me in that day. Dan was amazing, super friendly, patient, and helped design the perfect piece. I wanted super delicate script and he nailed it. I will go here for all my future tattoos and recommend this shop to anyone looking for a tattoo. $50 minimum here which is also a plus! read more

I went to get my tattoo yesterday which i have been in contact with Matt for a month so he can know what I'm getting and can get it ready. It was supposed to be sketched out and ready for me when I arrived. It was not ready, I waited 45 to an hour when I arrived for them to scetch it out. While waiting the smell in the trailer was nasty and the candle did not hide it. It smelled like a strong odor of weed or something.While doing the tattoo I pointed out where he missed some but he didnt fix all the places.i noticed after I took bandage off. The e near believe and the heart near hope not colored in. He was in a hurry to get paid that for a tattoo $125 he had " no chang" and rushed us that he got a $35 tip when we were trying to give him $15 or $20. So not prepared. This company went to shit the older owners would never let there place smell like the new place and would have done better jobs keeping up with everything. There goes out tattoo parlor time to find a new place to get tattoos. In search of getting my tattoo fixed somewhere else as I write this. read more

Called to schedule appt with Nate as he was very highly recommended by a few friends. Sue answered and informed me that all tattoo ideas for coverups must go through her. I explained that I wanted to run some ideas past Nate as he had helped a few friends with their coverups to find what would work and blend ideas, likes, interests, passions, etc. Sue, very rudely stated that she was the deciding factor in who would handle the cover up. I stated that I wanted to have the consultation done with Nate repeatedly but she continued to bash his overall abilities stating that he isn't good at intricate cover ups and that if the ideas were too much she would assign me someone else. Someone that I was not recommended to go to and someone that I would have zero comfort and familiarity with. I have now taken to Facebook to reach out to Nate for personal help/advice to avoid giving Sue my business. The tattoo industry is still a customer service industry but she seems to rule her shop with a iron, tattooed fist. Hope to hear back from Nate for my cover up. Hope Sue, the owner or owner's wife gets Hep C and dies a slow,painful death with no one mourning her passing because she was a raging bitch to those that hoped to patronize her establishment. This is my favorite place on Earth! My daughter, now 15, has gotten 4 piercings by Sam, and we have had nothing but incredible experiences. I recieved, in my opinion, the best tattoo ever by Dan in April. What he managed to pull off is nothing short of a miracle! I love showing off my piece of work, as it never fails to get a well deserved response. My wish is that everyone could be as happy as I am from my experience with this incredible shop. Honestly, I hear people complain about costs, but cannot understand why anyone would willingly pay a bargain basement price and then be surprised because you got a piece of crap permanently placed on your body. That's on you...you get what you pay for...However, after being a supportive, loyal customer, I must say I am a bit saddended. Monday, my daughter went to get a new piece of jewlery put into one of her helix piercings as, every time she messes with it, we end up back at Masterpiece. In addition, she chose to have the jewlery in her rook piercing changed. This was done by Dan, as Sam had a day off. THREE days later I had to bring my daughter back as the " backing" of the new rok jewlery fell off. Had NO problem doing this as I trust the shop completely. That being said, was BEYOND shocked they charged me $12 more for Sam to put a new backing on. Really sad. Will it stop me from going back? No. However, it was the first big disappointment I have experienced here. I guess the lesson is to stic k with what you know. read more

I got a tattoo done here by Dan (who I guess is the manager/owner) about a year and a half ago. It wasn't anything too fancy or huge; just four lines of a poem that I wanted done on my side in a typewriter script (which I actually brought in and he made the trace exactly from my printed copy). I was quoted a pretty steep price--$200. They actually charged me per letter, and added on an extra fee since it was on my ribs, which I'd never heard of before. It took a LOT longer than it should have, too. I felt like he was purposely working a bit slowly to try to convince me that it was worth the price (I'd expressed my chagrin at the quote). I will say that I'm happy with the outcome, it was exactly what I wanted (not that it was a difficult piece). But for the time, the price, and the someone indignant attitude I got I was not all that impressed. He had to apply and reapply the trace, probably about 15 times to get it straight, and he kept getting annoyed with me for breathing. At one point he stopped to take a smoke in the closed up room (without ever asking me if I minded, which I did), which sent the message that this job was getting on his nerves. Maybe he was just having an off day, but I definitely got the feeling that I was bothering him...and getting charged $200 to do it. The place was clean and good sized. Three stars because I'm happy with the outcome, but I was definitely underwhelmed by the service, experience, and price. I won't be going here again. read more

I asked specifically that it be done with the finest point needle to emulate the detail of a rubber stamp (it's an Edward Gorey image) and he did it remarkably quick and with genius skill. I was so disappointed. I have been going to masterpiece for 6 years now (for piercings only) and I have had a great experience every time. I got my cartilage twice, mid cartilage, belly button, and forward helix. All piercings healed very well, no issues. Piercers were always friendly, place was always clean, etc etc. I went in for my last time today. Was pierced by the older gentleman, didn't even introduce himself so I don't know his name. I wanted my septum pierced so they set up the room and I went in. He didn't explain what he was doing and suddenly the needle was at my nose. I asked why he wasn't using a clamp, and he said he never does. He seemed like he was in a rush and was bothered by my questioning. Onto the actual piercing. I have done a lot of research about this piercing (as I always do) and it is suppose to go through the gap in your septum cartilage that is just skin, the sweet spot people have nicknamed it. It should glide right through. Well he certainly missed my "sweet spot" as he struggled and pushed hard through my nose cartilage. Worst pain from a piercing I have ever felt. I started bleeding furiously after he swapped the jewelry in and I knew something was wrong. The piercer said nothing. He started ripping at my skin to make the ring a bit wider. I was crying at this point and swearing under my breath at the pain. I am very good with piercing pain and have never experienced something like this before. He didn't stop to give me a break, just kept going at it. When he told me to look in the mirror I was horrified. The piercing was coming out of the front of my nose! Not my septum! I showed him and he wasn't even apologetic. He just said yeah I will have to take that out. He took it out, which was followed up with another gushing of blood. He didn't say anything as I got up to leave. I was expecting him to say come back and I will do it for free, sorry about the inconvenience, but nope nothing. I am so upset, for I have always trusted masterpiece, but after this experience I can say I will not be coming back. If you go for a piercing make sure Sam does it, not the older gentleman. First let me say I read the reviews and was a little worried, my wife bought a gift certificate and as such I was committed. I elected to have a custom tattoo done and from the reviews I selected Dan to do the work. Dan I believe is the owner, not that I knew at the time of selecting him, I made the appointment and had the work done over a couple of sessions. They could not have been better, the work was done right and in a clean and pleasant environment. I cannot see why there are any negative reviews. I will defiantly be getting my next tattoo at Masterpiece. read more

I recently went to Masterpiece to get my nose pierced. After lots of reading I finally decided Masterpiece was the studio to go to. And I was right! I was greeted by Sam, who also turned out to be the piercer. She was super friendly and helpful in deciding what type of jewelry to get. Once we were ready to pierce, I started getting nervous as this was my first piercing with a needle. Sam instantly put me at ease; assuring me I would be okay. The piercing went fine and I was not worried after all thanks to Sam! I would recommend everyone see Sam for their piercing needs. She is great in every way.
