I read the "negative" review about the person who received cheese enchiladas and not the chicken enchiladas they ordered. I feel sad for them as Matamoros' cheese enchiladas are one of their flagship items. I know a bank president and a college administrator 60 miles away in Victoria who drive an hour to Gonzales for those cheese enchiladas. Did this person even try the cheese enchiladas? Considering Matamoros is routinely packed with customers the reviewers 1 star review hasn't hurt their fan base. On to my review, I ordered the Taco Salad special on Saturday March 21, 2026 and it was fabulous as always. We did have to wait 3 minutes for a table to clear as they were slammed at high noon. Their parking lot was packed and the drive through line extended into the street. My taco salad was piled high with well seasoned ground beef atop crisp lettuce, crunchy tortilla chips, diced tomatoes, lots of their fabulous shredded cheddar cheese and a guacamole cup. (This is the same famous shredded cheddar cheese that used in their famous enchiladas) They also brought out a basket of piping hot, crispy tortilla chips and their signature green Jalapeno sauce they make from scratch daily. The green sauce is off the charts. I also enjoy their red sauce but I dream of the green sauce. My wife ordered breakfast tacos for lunch, 2 bacon potato cheese tacos. They use thick cut delicious bacon, make their tortillas from scratch, perfectly roast their potatoes, and yes use the same fabulous cheese used on my taco salad and on many of their other dishes including their signature enchiladas Are you getting my drift about how fabulous their cheese is? I'm adding a photo of our plates from this visit. Also you should search for Matamoros cheese enchiladas to see video of what those look like on YT so you can feel sorry for the poor soul who missed out on them. By the way we both had large iced teas, served in large, convenient and insulating styrofoam cups. Their tea is epic!! Served with thick cut Sunkist lemons on the side. I really don't have any complaints about Matamoros, if there was one selfishly, I would want them open 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 days a year. This is a family run business and they deserve time off to refresh and regroup and that's OK because every time I go there I always leave smiling. And every time I'm there I'm always met my friendly familiar faces. Also I should add. I've never seen anyone crying inside Matamoros. Everyone is happy there. I think they're happy because they love the food so much, and they love friendly faces who serve it to them. read more

The good - Service was good, food was ok, but not great. The idiotic Bad - Who charges for tap water?? I went up to pay and she asked me what we had to drink. I said water, she said what size? Puzzled, I again said "Water"! She said what size? I asked you charge for "water"? She said yes! Just to make a point, this was not bottled water, spring water or anything special. She looked over at our table and said .75 per cup. Note: When ordering a water, it was never said that we would be charged, nor were we asked what size we would like!!! Not that the food was worthy of a return trip anyway, but for poor business practices we will never be back!! read more

Stellar breakfast tacos. They are all over the tacos. You know they got it when there's a line of cars in the drive thru AND nearly every parking spot is taken. It's a humble place with great texmex. My business colleague and i went through the drive thru and ordered 2 mexicano megas tacos with green sauce and a chicken enchilada plate with a side of sour cream. Paid the 20. and cents, handed a 100.00 bill received the change and food and left. we work and live out of town. When we arrived at our destination out of town, we did not receive the correct enchilada plate, instead of chicken we got cheese. With the inconvenience of having to stop at a drive thru, i would expect the food the way i ordered it. It is the responsibility of the one who reads the order, and puts the food in the to go box to ensure its correct. This simply did not happen. The girl repeated my order 2 times, so it is not her fault. We were told they had great food, but will never know that with the customer service like this. I will NOT be returning. YOU DONT GET A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION!! read more

I drove up and parking lot was full so imagined food had to be decent. Sat at a table and waited for awhile and waitress never came to table so I opted to order at counter . I ordered the guisado plate. Price was average if it would have been edible. I can say the chips were warm and fresh and salsa was decent. The guisado on the other hand was large chunks of fatty meat in a dark chocolate colored sauce with a gritty taste. it came with rice and beans and a scoop of guacamole. Remodeled from an old gas station, the place looks to small and not so appealing. But the mouthwatering smell of food from outside will draw you in. Great food! I was driving through on the way to Austin when I saw the reviews. We arrived at the lunch rush so it was crowded. We ordered in no time as the line was moving fast. Our food took about 10 minutes to arrive. The food was really good! For only $5.00, I got 2 enchiladas, rice, refried beans, and guacamole! It also came with homemade flour tortillas that were warm and delicious. The salsa was spicy and tasty as well. I stuck with water and a squeeze of lemon. The food was fantastic. The atmosphere was ok, but it was clean and bright. It looked like a converted gas station. This place really hit the spot and the price was ridiculously cheap. We just happen to be driving through Gonzales,TX, and this came up as a near by place. At first it looks like it is part of an old gas station, and was limited parking, but we decided to stop. Apparently this is the place for breakfast in Gonzales Texas and my fellow yelpers haven't alluded me wrong!! So instead of the free hotel breakfast we came here and glad that we did!! once we arrived by the hustle and bustle of the parking lot, we new that it was going to be good!! so we enter the establishment and we hit the line? not knowing how the drill was we were at a stand still for a couple of minutes till we finally asked? Yes line up behind the last person and wait your turn to order (to go or to stay) once you ordered, find a place to sit most tables clear up quickly, no numbers and no names they get your order to you!! our order two Barbacoa tacos and two Migas al la Mexicana and two 16oz Dr. Peppers from fridge in the front as you walk in. The (hefty) Barbacoa taco very very good!! just right not to dry or oily, and the M.a M.also very very good!! and the salsas the red just for taste, but the green!! oh yeah!! that's the wow factor!! only wish I had more, to kick the very annoying slight hangover out of my head?!?! read more

Decided to stop here for some tacos on the way to town and I have to say these are some pretty good tacos. Unfortunately the wait was too long because they forgot about our order but it was worth the wait. Hopefully that doesn't happen again. The line was actually out the door. Food was not that good and over priced. The quesadilla didn't even have a price on the menu. When I asked the waitress she said it was around $8. The menu described it coming with taco meat or fajita meat. I didn't get a check and instead had to go to the register and list all the food we ordered. It was more expensive than I expected and when I checked it was $8 per quesadilla plus an extra $3 for the meat. Considering the cheese in the quesadilla seemed to be the consistency of nacho cheese, I'm not sure how it could be eaten without the meat or how they could charge $8 for 2 tortillas and nacho cheese. read more

We came here the first time because of the reviews. They weren't wrong! The food is super. The service is awesome. I can order lunch at breakfast! What more could you ask for? Tip 1: Order the carne guisada. Trust me. No cheese--it doesn't need it! Tip 2: Split the Mexican plate. No, really. Tip 3: The green sauce is awesome but super spicy. Approach with caution. Coming here is like coming home. Their taco salad all the way full order is wonderful! Also it's not on menu but a puffy quesadilla is also amazing!!!!! Just order it! It's deep fried goodness! My sister says their burgers are good too....weird right?!! Queso isnt, it's just melted cheese but mix. With their green salsa and bam yummy! In the mornings this place is PACKED!!! I will say this as positive, it's affordable. The queso was cold and clumpy. I asked our hotel staff for authentic Mexican food, and if this is the best in town, I feel for the locals. The green sauce is spicy, but red is like eating tomato sauce. Nothing was authentic, or great quality. The quesadilla was another huge disappointment. The nachos were lacking flavor. In the land of "Come Take It," I'll leave it next time. I would suggest anyone find an alternative to this place. I didn't like the fact of pretipping either, but rolled with it. The staff really looked at us like we were bothering them just by being there. On the menu they had breakfast tacos and some that stuck out to me was "meat and egg" so I asked what the meat was in a meat and egg taco. Another local favorite, this restaurant has the best rating in Gonzales which now I understand why, there really is nothing in Gonzales. The taco I got was the Richard or Roger or something like that it was the super popular one, there was too much potatoe and the bacon was burnt. Not to big on flavor in this town apparently.
