After a few more visits I would highly recommend the loaded nachos, or a bowl, both have "build your own" options and they're chips are very crunchy and delicious. Avoid cocktails, I'm not sure if it's a staffing issue or what but the mojito didn't have any real mint in it and the mai tai was super sweet. Beer is standard and they have Modelo, Blue Moon and other beers on tap. Enjoy the paintings and other decorations, it's very colorful and fun! The Chips are salty, the guac is chunky & the salsa is dancing! I chose the 3 taco platter (chicken sofrito) & added my 5 toppings. Which were so hard to choose from but, I had to definitely go with cojita cheese & how often do you have pineapple mango salsa. Every time you come, you can have a different experience with all the options, I love it! I tried the Tequila Tini...hold on to your chair! It will make you think you can dance. If the music was a little louder, I just might have. The ambiance is casual & family friendly. I could see this becoming a nice mingling spot if they decide to stay open longer. With it's long bar & close seating, you'll make friends easily. The customer service was pretty well done. Especially for a new restaurant. All orders came out fast, correct, & hot. As a family, we have come to this restaurant now probably a dozen times. I definitely see why some people did not give this five stars initially.-but wait! They are good now - REAL GOOD! I strongly recommend a bowl. You can select your meat, rice beans, and additional things like lettuce, tomato onion, guacamole, sour cream, salsa to have them tail your meal exactly the way you want it. This most recent visit we were greeted and they brought my 87 year old mom a tea because they know she likes a cup of tea. Then they find us the perfect table, so our grandchildren can be grandchildren. And quite frankly, the margaritas are underpriced if you want a very fairly priced meal for your family, you can order from the Mexican side or the pizza side of the restaurant. Your final bill will not be that bad and the service is good so I really don't see why any family would not consider this place. They have my strong recommendation. read more

This place has so much potential. The staff was excellent. The location is good. The vibe is cool if you're looking for a dive bar vibe, which I was. So that might be enough right there. But why can't it have a line out the door like, for example, Sayulita's, which is also a taco kinda place? The answer lies with the tacos - which were very uninspired, and the margaritas, which were definitely not inspired, and served in a tumbler, so you're getting a whole lot of sugar water and ice. So we had a good time in spite, and played a game of pool. The bar tender was so welcoming. And a major plus is that they serve pizza from Pizza on Main. And that pizza was super inspired. We ordered a Mediterranean with white sauce. So it doesn't seem like it would be impossible for Mateo's to, at least, serve a decent margarita. And good tacos just need some tlc. read more

On Fridays I often splurge and order out. My mom wanted pizza so as I was looking, I saw Main st Pizza and Mateo's in East Hampton. We enjoy their Portland restaurant, Burger Heaven, so I thought it was time we try these two. Since they are next to each other, I could order Mexican (my first love) and mom could get her pizza. I ordered a carnitas burrito with a small guac and side of house salsa. I wish I took a photo or two. (Sorry). This burrito was huge! Full of juicy, shredded pork, cilantro rice and all the additions. They grilled it so it had a nice little crunch on the outside. I do love a little heat but steered away from the jalapeño salsa this time or adding jalapeños. It wasn't clear if they were fresh or pickled. I only want fresh! lol. But I like that my mom could enjoy their food since there is no spicy unless you add it. Now their guacamole?? Probably one of the best I have ever had. Truly. And I've tried a lot of guac!! I also used to make it at chipotle years ago. Mateo's is Smooth and creamy and they nailed it with the lemon/lime juice. Not too much onion - again I like that. So many places do not add enough. The salsa is as fresh as can be. Again, I need to try some items that would add some heat for me, but otherwise this place is AWESOME!!! Don't hesitate to try it yourself. This will be a new frequent go-to for me. Mom hasn't tried her pizza yet but it looks delicious. I will put a review on the pizza place soon enough. Keep up the great work Mateo's. We stopped by for some Margaritas and apps for happy hour and Mateo's did not disappoint. Nice decor and the food was delicious. Waitress was excellent. Nice spot to stop on the airline trail if you are biking through East Hampton Center. read more

Owner took down multiple honest reviews. This place SUCKS. The owner turned the only renovated part of the restaurant into a"bar only" area, the seating sucks, the food is overpriced garbage. The owner is a HUGE jerk to anyone who comes in. If you're not old and rich and white he will treat you like you're not supposed to be there. I tried eating in with family and he rushed us out and barely sat for an hour (the reason we sat so long was to wait for our food and he basically rushed us out). When I come in as an uber eats delivery driver he is very rude to his only cook, and you can tell she's overworked and underpaid. On top of it the last time I ordered takeout an AI took my order. If you support a business that would rather pay for an AI to take your order instead of a local teen looking for a job you're the problem and the robots ARE taking jobs. Owner is SO rude and I paid over $40 for one tiny piece of chicken and four garlic knots. Absolutely disgusting service, rude owner, disgusting atmosphere (you can tell they want you to get drunk at the bar so you can't taste the food). Hate this place! Bring real pizza places with NICE owners and authentic mexican food back! read more

Hubs had a burrito, I had soft tacos. Basic, with no presentation. Definitely do not understand the hype. If you've been to Fresca's in Colchester, there is no comparison. I was excited to find a Mexican option in our area. Sadly both my guest and I were disappointed. For vegetarians and vegans there was not much to be excited about. I could get past that, except that our table was not clean. Yes, we did pick it ourselves, but the others did not appear much better. The greeting we received was the best part of the experience. Everyone was very friendly and upbeat. The decor is very attractive and inviting While our server was pleasant, she was either not well trained or helpful. The server approached our table and asked what we wanted to order. We commented on the menu selections, and then our drink order was taken. After ordering, we did not get the table wiped down, or tableware, napkins, etc. When our appetizer arrived, we had to call a server to get us plates, etc. Because the visit was so challenging, we just paid our bill and left without ordering a main course. The bill for a beer, cocktail, chips with salsa and guac, was over $40. Maybe another time, after perhaps the menu is tweaked and staff gets more experienced, I'll try again. read more
