Both of my kids have been attending Mathnasium El Segundo for 1/2 year now. I wouldn't say they look forward or enjoy going to tutoring class (who does?!) but, they admit that the work they do at Mathnasium, empowers them when it's Math time at school. Occasionally, when my kids are not following a lesson at school, they do not hesitate to ask the tutors at Mathnasium to spend time to work on that specific lesson, so they can be more prepared when they return to school the next day. Overall, my kids believes Mathnasium is crucial for all types of students. The El Segundo location is convenient , and all the tutors are great with the kids. The head staff is very patient, and is willing to take time to discuss the progression of the student with the parents. The tutors are all young students in high school or college. I really thought there would be more adult staff. My 9 year old loved the tutors and the center, while my 7 year old too rambunctious was "not quite ready for the program". It's a good program that builds math skills and confidence. read more

I joined Yelp just to give Mathnasium props. We moved to El Segundo for the great High School. Unfortunately, the previous school district left my son completely unprepared for 9th grade work in math. He was lacking skills and confidence. Math is too important and I don't have the ability to help him with algebra and such. So we signed him up and took advantage of the summer Mathnasium program. My son liked the sessions and was gaining knowledge every session. He knew it was helping him immensely, so we continued using it into his freshman fall semester this year. If your kids need some help with Math, this is the place! My daughter would not enjoy a packet a day or any other type of tutoring, but she looks forward to Mathnasium every week. Mathnasium's philosophy is totally different, they break down the components so the kids actually understand the basic application of Math, it totally fits the Core Curriculum. Plus they make learning fun through games. I already see a transformation even though we've only been there for a few months. All the instructors are really nice, Victor is my daughter's favorite. Though they are all nice to work with. They do get new tutors sometimes but they are always so amazing with the kids. Lotus and her crew at Mathnasium are so great. Our two young sons (grades 3 and 6) were really struggling with "common core" math and it was beginning to affect their self esteem. I had had the absolute pleasure of finding Mathnasium of El Sugundo this past Spring. My girlfriends son attends a private Catholic school and was slated to receive a C for his final grade. I was so delighted to have a conference with one of the owners, Leron, who you could not help but appreciate his understanding and patience in dealing with parents and a student. Leron had my girlfriends son take a placement test where it showed that he was definitely behind both Federal and State standards. We immediately enrolled my girlfriends son in Mathnasium's curriculum which makes total sense after listening to Leron's explanation of the program. I am happy to say that my girlfriend's son received a B on his final grade in math. We had my girlfriends son attend tutoring three days a week for the last month of the school year, and I think it paid off in dividends. Going forward we enrolled my girlfriends son in summer school where he is taking Geometry and on his first test he recieved a B. Keep in mind my girlfriends son is attending Tutoring sessions 4 times a week for the remainder of summer school. I have also had the delight of meeting and having several discussions with Leron's partner, Eti who so incredible. We are so lucky to have two wonderful teachers that have offered supplemental assistance in our community. This is not an inexpensive program, however I believe sometimes in life you get what you pay for, and in this case the program speaks volumes!!! I have traditionally been my own kids' tutor when it comes to anything that has to do with academics. They do not like the concept of homework and has such a bad attitude when I try to help them. It's a constant battle. In trying to save my own sanity, I decided to give this a try and it has been great. The twins come home excitedly telling me how many math sheets they have completed and what prizes they have earned. They look forward to going and learning. What else could I possibly ask for! PS Lotus, the owner worked with them directly for the first while and she was very very personable. She played math games using cards with my twins to make them feel at ease as they tend to be on the shy side and do not do well with new changes. I met the owner/director of Mathnasium Eti at the El Segundo run for education 5k in April of this year. They had a booth there and I stopped by. Eti was very nice, and personable. She explained their philosophy of teaching. My son was a freshman at ESHS, and had a private tutor at the time. After I told her the issues my son was having, I decided to schedule an assessment for him. At the assessment, I met Eti's husband, who was just as intelligent, and very well educated in all levels of math that is way beyon my level of comprehension. I sighed my son up, after just one session, he said that he learned a lot but not just that, but that he understood what they taught him. That's a lot coming from my son who would rather do anything else than algebra! He has learned so much going to Mathnasium then with his one on one tutor! The facility is well lit, and the staff is very friendly. They even have a reward system in place where you can win prizes like a gift card to in and out which my son likes. My son even likes the little chats after his session is over about basketball with some of their tutors there. By the way, his algebra grade has improved which made me very proud! After trying at home tutors and tutors at various locations, we stumbled upon Mathnasium at the start of 2016 summer. Upon completing her first session, my daughter came running out to the car and exclaimed, "I get it Mom, they explained it to me and I understand!" I can't tell you, as a parent with a child that has constantly struggled with math, which has undermined her overall confidence at school, how terrific it was to hear her say this. Not only that, but she liked it too! Bonus! The center director/owner, Eti, from what I can tell is always there when it is open. She is patient, caring and seems to genuinely care about all the kids that pass thru the doors She is available for discussion at any time. I never feel hurried or dismissed when asking questions or have a concern. The center itself is a positive and upbeat environment, with the students earning star points to use toward items at the center. The only reason, I give it 4 stars instead of 5, that for us, it has been a challenge to get to the center when it is open.
