The vibe is energetic and positive. My daughter's math has gotten significantly better to the point where her actual math homework for first grade is too easy for her. So it's definitely helping for sure. Separately mathnasium has their own effective currency called "cards" that students earn based on how much math they do and they then use those cards to buy whatever items they want ranging from candy to toys to even big ticket items like ps5 or Nintendo switches. This teaches my daughter to essentially be good with money by learning to save instead of spend which is even more important to me than her being good at math.

Our daughter is already involved in a lot of activities yet we wanted to supplement her learning with additional tutoring without having additional learning assignments -- Sylvan Learning fits the bill. 1. Our daughter looks SUPER FORWARD to going each and every week. The positive reward system they use is excellent. 2. The atmosphere is very positive - the teachers are kind and friendly. 3. There is NO outside homework - very big plus for us not wanting to add an additional burden of more homework. 4. The administrative staff are super helpful, and meet with us monthly to go over our daughter's progress and learning goals in great detail. 5. This program is evidence based, and they use solid metrics to define progress and set new and measurable leaning goals. Both of my kids have been attending Mathnasium El Segundo for 1/2 year now. I wouldn't say they…read morelook forward or enjoy going to tutoring class (who does?!) but, they admit that the work they do at Mathnasium, empowers them when it's Math time at school. Occasionally, when my kids are not following a lesson at school, they do not hesitate to ask the tutors at Mathnasium to spend time to work on that specific lesson, so they can be more prepared when they return to school the next day. Overall, my kids believes Mathnasium is crucial for all types of students. The El Segundo location is convenient , and all the tutors are great with the kids. The head staff is very patient, and is willing to take time to discuss the progression of the student with the parents. If you are on the fence whether you should send your child to Mathnasium, then I highly suggest you to. The struggle should not be at home, and be left to the professionals.

I feel as though she is not getting a full understanding of the basics when presented via Common Core. In second grade alone, they have jumped around from the simplest addition & subtraction all the way to multiplication and division!?!?!? A week here, a week there. It just doesn't seem like a solid foundation. Kumon's system is all about strong fundamentals! We will have our daughter in Kumon throughout her schooling, so long as Common Core remains present in the district & state. I highly recommend Claire and this center!

My 1st grader has been attending the tutoring center for a few months now and the level he is…read morestudying here is surprising. I reviewed the materials he is solving, and it's definitely ahead of what I thought he was capable of. He was writing letters in mirrors images pretty recently, but the stuff in the workbook here that he was reading and writing reminded me of PSAT (for those old enough to remember those) . Of course, to do these, he needs attention and guidance from a teacher at a much lower ratio than what we can get from school, and here, it's kept at about 2 students per teacher. Being a fidgety flighty 6 yr old boy (hopefully normal?) I don't know how much he learns in his school class of 26 kids and I don't have the skills to teach him myself so I started sending him here for professional help twice a week to make sure he doesn't fall behind. Looks like mission is being accomplished so far! And most importantly, he enjoys learning here, which made it part of our weekly routine now. They offer a free assessment, where the student takes a test and they come back with analysis on the student's level and recommendations. It's a nice computer printout that Mr. Chow goes over with you. And then you can decide to enroll or not, and how often to attend and what times you'd like. It was a nice way to get started, as well as probably the first time I got my child assessed on anything. Thankfully he tested slightly above his grade level, but upon examining the questions, I did notice it would've resulted differently had we not done a few reading sessions on our own just the week prior to the assessment, as the vocab tests were specific. So it's not perfect, but still a really useful experience for the child and the parent!

The tutors are patient, supportive, and really take the time to help each student understand the material. Our kids feel encouraged and capable, which has made a big difference.
