Super cute cafe with very good food. Parking in the back is very easy. My husband got cold brew and I did the lavender yuzu mocktail, both were good. I ordered the Lafayette on a baguette and he ordered the Parisian. The sandwiches were massive and also came with salad, neither of us could finish. They were very very good. The bread was perfect. Went to Matines Cafe for lunch today after Mass. The coffee menu is solid and their coffee drinks are well made. I had the Eiffel sandwich, which was flank steak, sautéed onions, and swiss on a baguette with Dijon. The baguette was fresh and the crust was crisp, the steak and onions were perfect, the swiss was perfectly melted, and the Dijon was just enough to provide that little tang. Had the tomato bisque as my side, and it was delicious! I love the vibe of this place. You can enjoy a great breakfast or lunch, or you could just as easily enjoy coffee and pastries while doing some work. There's no order counter, the waitresses will come to your tables. Amazing food, cute decor, good prices and free parking in the lot out back. There's also a patio. Never again! This used to be a nice place. No longer. Ridiculous practice now of having to take a menu from a basket, then go a few feet to the counter to place your order and pay. We gave a 20% tip. Not even a thank you. Bottles of water on the side for you to serve yourself. The kicker was the plastic plates with the cheapest utensils. The drinks tasted like flavored water. No thank you, no "how is/was everything." A real shame. read more

Old dirty fake plants, not great decor, looks like things thrown in here and there The thing bothered me most was cleanliness. It's wasn't awful, however it wasn't great at all. We sat by the window and the window had fingerprints all over. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. There was food all over the floor. It was not busy enough for no one to clean up the floors. Every table will have food underneath of them. You may have thought children were there eating. And the bathrooms ! Came here on a Sunday morning with friends and their young children (two are 6 months, one is 4 years). The layout of the place allows for strollers to easily get around and for patrons to spread out at their tables. We had an 11am reservation and I was glad we did because the place was full. Service was a bit slow (it took about 20 minutes to receive our coffees after ordering). My Brown Sugar Cold Brew was really delicious. The Artichoke Quiche was incredible! And the serving size was amazing - two big slices! They also sell gifty items that are mostly French themed. If you don't want to dine in, you can order things to go at the counter. read more

My mother and I stopped in for a late lunch and, although the food and drink were very good as usual, we had some other issues. When we had walked in, we saw a sign on the door asking patrons to please make sure the door closes fully behind them. However, there was no sign on the other side for people leaving. After the door kept getting left open, letting cold air in, I finally went up to the register to speak with the young woman there. I told her that people keep leaving the door open as they are leaving and asked if she could please put a sign for people leaving the cafe, which might help. I also asked if she could please keep an eye on the door, and let her know I had already had to get up 3 times to shut the door. To her credit, she did ask if we wanted to move to a different table, but it seemed like a hassle at that point. She did say again that she would be sure to keep an eye on the door. Guess what? She did not keep an eye on the door as more people were leaving. My mother also tried to catch her as she was going by, and she didn't stop. She basically ignored us the rest of the time. The young man serving us was polite but just kind of smiled and said sorry with a passive attitude when my mother mentioned the issue as we were paying (we told him we didn't want the coffee drinks after all, we just wanted to pay and leave at that point). I would think business owners would instruct their employees to try to please their customers and make them feel welcome. In the case of an issue, I would expect the employee to want to make an effort to make things right. This was a disappointing experience and I wouldn't recommend the place for this reason. read more

Loveeee! This French Café has ample room to spread out for coffee and yummy lunch. I also love their iced tea that's presented at the table. The croissants are baked fresh daily, and I recommend the smoked salmon. read more

Super cute French cafe, the interior is elegant and workers are kind. I got the lafayette on a croissant, it was light, crispy, and the pear was refreshing. The salad wasn't really a salad, just some mixed greens on the side without any dressing, I think that could be improved upon. Few things make me swoon like a good French pastry. Always looking for one wherever I go. Such a treat to find one so close to home. Discovered as I was shopping elsewhere and asked the clerk why parking was so bad. He gestured to the cafe and said it was really good. I had to check it out. Lovely, spacious and full of happy customers. I joined the line to order and after a short wait got a small cherry pie and galette de rois. Most of the offerings were based on a laminated dough. I wouldn't turn them down, but hope they expand to those intricate little treasures I crave. They had bread, I had to pass since my schedule would keep me from eating it at its prime. read more

I've only been twice but I only eat out when I'm with friends and I have very few friends. The first time was during a busy time of day, but I found the noise level acceptable. The second time was on a Saturday around 2:30 p.m., and there were few customers, which was nice. I have no recollection of what I ate the first time, but food is unimportant to me. The second time I had salmon on a baguette. Chewing that baguette gave my mouth quite a workout, but that's as it should be. It was delicious. I was surprised by how reasonable the prices were. The servers I had were polite and attentive. More than I'd have thought they'd be, considering that they looked like runway models. That's not a slam on runway models, but you know how they can be. Matine's Cafe is very near me and good enough that I almost wish I had more friends so I'd have a reason to go there. read more

The food is mediocre to fine, but the service is so bad it's almost crazy. It wasn't overly crowded at lunch, and our water glasses were empty for a very long time. We couldn't signal the waitress to help us, and my six year old was extremely thirsty after finishing her meal without water and then about ten minutes of us looking around. My husband went to the counter to ask a woman (who he believed to be the manger) for water. She said of course and she would bring us some right away. Bizarrely, she went about doing other things and did not help us but several minutes later she sat a new table directly next to us, filled all of their glasses with water, then stood near us whispering and laughing with our waitress while she dangled a pitcher of water over my daughter's distressed face. I loudly asked if we could please get some water for our child and she finally poured some and bolted away without an apology or any acknowledgment of how weird it all was. It was extremely rude. Our pathetically poor waitress then stood over us with her eyeballs on the mobile payment device until we finished tipping her. What the heck is going on with this place? Also: I placed my bag on the floor which was a mistake, since it was covered in spills and milk and I realized it was straight up filthy. read more

I used to frequent this cafe but I had a poor experience and unfortunately won't be returning. The Lafayette sandwich is prepared with a small amount of deli meat and canned pears. Tried both the salmon board and the salmon tartine. Liked the tartine much more since it had more flavor served with taziki instead if whipped feta. Expensive but portions are large. The french onion soup is just okay - a bit too salty (and I love salt). Also tried friends artichoke quiche. Served luke warm but very nice. Loud when full which I dont like so Id go back on off hours. Service is friendly. I really miss Le Pain Quotidien and nothing comes close to it in terms of organic offerings and coffee but at least Wayne now has a decent frenchy place again. read more

The food and ambiance were quite good, however, I won't be returning. The service left much to be desired. I sat and waited while several tables around me were approached and served by our server. I was essentially ignored for about 10-15 minutes. I had to ask another server for our server twice so I could place my coffee order. Multiple things that our table ordered came out incorrectly. For example, I ordered a hot drink and received a cold one. I drank it as it was because I didn't want to have to wait even longer. Another member of my party is a vegetarian and expressed this to our server. She explained she wanted a particular sandwich without the meat. The sandwich arrived with prosciutto and had to be sent back. Another member of my party requested cream for her iced coffee. Our server never brought it. My friend had to ask another server to bring it. The attitude of our server left much to be desired. She tried to explain away her lack of attention by trying to shift the blame on a member of my party for not giving her the correct order. I went to Matines over the weekend with a friend. It truly is a cute establishment. I love the gifts to buy around the shop as well. Unfortunately, there were a few things that turned me off. For starters, it is self serve. You have to order at the counter and they deliver the food to you. I realize this isn't a huge deal but I anticipated having a waitress. The other issue I had was the price. For a latte, pastry, and yogurt parfait I paid around $25. To me, that is just astronomical. The food was decent, latte was good but not warm enough, so none of this warranted the $25 price tag. As cute and charming as this place is, I don't think it's worth returning. read more

In my short time here (less than 45 minutes) three birds flew into the building, two of them crashing and falling dead on the floor. This was just gross and disheartening when eating/ordering food and drink. The server also was not friendly, was not greeted when I came in, then when trying to find a table to sit at (was not aware it was also a "sit down" restaurant when there was no host at a hostess stand?) I was told I could not use half of the tables in the establishment since I wasn't "sit-down dining". Coffee was good, food was sub-par. Came to Matines in CH on Presidents Day in the afternoon. We initially scoped out the restaurant for a table. I counted 7 empty tables that were full of dirty dishes (NOT a good look or pleasant to see)! FRom what I could see there were 3 occupied tables in total. There were 5 employees standing in a circle talking behind the counter, and one walking around on a cell phone. There were dozens of white napkins on the ground (something white scattered). It was immediately clear that the owners weren't present! If a manager was there, he/she certainly wasn't doing a good or effective job!! Our drink order was completely wrong, and the food was just okay, Nothing special. We were not at all impressed. Lots of improvement needed here. read more

Lovely restaurant-- like you've stepped into a Parisian café. Everything we tried on the menu was delicious, and the ambiance was so so cute. There were tables and benches adorned with pillows. They sold little knick knacks and delicious teas, where the tea bags have this unique shape with a little leaf. From the cafe, we ordered the artichoke quiche, lavender hot chocolate, chicken sandwich, and avocado tartine. We also ordered a winter special, mushroom soup, which was so creamy and delicious. Everything was spendid, and we'll definitely be back to try more off of the menu. The waiter will engage with you in French if you would like as well. read more

Matines is such a wonderful addition to the area! I went there today for lunch with a friend. We were warmly greeted and chose a table so we could study the menu. We then ordered at their counter, and our lunch and drinks were brought to us. My friend had the Lafayette sandwich on a croissant, which she declared was delicious- a perfect combination of pears and Brie. I had the Versailles sandwich on a croissant, and enjoyed it down to the last crumb. My friend had a lavender hot chocolate, and I had a regular hot chocolate- perfect on a blustery chilly day. There is a wide selection of gifts and books available, and you can order pastries to take home with you. Prices are very reasonable and everything is made fresh to your order. Nice ambiance too, and pretty French decor- tasteful but not overdone or fussy. I'm looking forward to my return visit! read more

Man- I wanted to love this place! But I can't yet. First, I admit I may have had the wrong expectations. This place reminds me of a little spot in Midtown Manhattan called Pavé - which is amazing. (In fact, I feel guilty for not reviewing it - I'll do that soon) Based on the server's recommendation, I got the matines sandwich - scrambled eggs, bacon and cheddar on your choice of croissant, bagel or baguette. I went baguette of course! For $2 extra, I got a cup of soup (tomato bisque) instead of a salad. And a drip coffee. The pros: The coffee was very good - and I got a free refill! The baguette was fresh and toasted up nicely There was plenty of bacon and cheddar The soup came with a nice little slice of toasted baguette The less good: The consistency of the scrambled eggs was off putting. I expected either velvety, European style soft scrambled eggs or larger curd, firmer eggs (I prefer the former, but know they are difficult to deliver in a commercial setting). Instead, they were kind of grainy - evoking more of a Wawa / powdered eggs feeling. The soup was quite far from hot - just tepid. And the flavor is ... ok. Compounding my disappointment, is the fact that my meal was $25 after tip. :( The ambiance is quite nice - little French marble bistro tables and rattan chairs. And teo long banquettes with ample pillows and bolsters. Well-conceived French accents throughout. It's very French without being belligerently French. The acoustics aren't great, but the conversation buzz is pleasant. Decent parking behind the building - but be careful of the narrow driveway from Lancaster. I tried to turn in and a FedEx truck going the wrong way almost gave me a much worse morning than I was planning. This isn't the restaurant's fault as the driveway is clearly posted to not enter from the wrong side. Nevertheless, I'd recommend navigating to the smaller road behind the restaurant. For the future - I can't try a breakfast sandwich again until I know the eggs have evolved. The lunch items look great on the menu and their ready-made pastries look very good. I'll definitely try at least a pastry and more of their excellent coffee while I keep my fingers crossed about the eggs. And if I ever do get the breakfast again, I'll skip the soup, save $2 and just have the salad. read more
