I was immediately greeted my first time there, and enjoyed petting Daisy while waiting for my appointment. Farah is the first hair dresser who really listened to what I wanted. She kept the length of my hair but trimmed it back to looking healthy! It was evident that the stylists had good relationships with their clients, as everyone walking in was greeted by name. If you want amazing results for color, go to Kathy! SHE IS AMAZING. I have dark dark hair, it was extremely dried out and it needed some therapy. Even though it did take a long time (3-4 hours) it was totally worth it! My hair has a new life and I'm in love with the color! When I picked the color I wanted. For your balayage/ombré needs, please go see Kathy! I found her actually by walking up to a random girl and asking where she got her hair done. Turns out the girl I spoke to was Kathy's sister-in-law. She gave me her IG handle (beautybykathya) and almost immediately, I made an appointment. It is quite a hike to the salon for me. Coming from Baltimore, it's about an hour and 20 minute commute. However, completely worth it! I had my hair butchered by another well known stylist for almost double the price of this salon. For my balayage, the cost was $150 not including tip. Kathy was honest and said that the hair color I desire would take more than 1 session. Well, even after the first session, I am completely sold. Along with her amazing hair painting skills, she was super amicable and patient. Despite the salon closing at 5pm, she did not rush and paced herself. We ended up finishing around 8pm. All in all, I highly recommend Kathy and can't wait for my next session to go lighter! read more

Having moved to Northern Virginia pretty recently, I hadn't found a new salon yet when COVID hit! So by the time the state lifted some restrictions, my hair was downright ratchet. I went to Matisse based on the Yelp reviews and am very glad I did. Despite limited service, they called me back with an appointment right away. The salon was super clean and maintained all safety protocols. The lovely Delia was my stylist and she did a great job. She listened to exactly what I wanted, she took her time and made sure it was right. She tamed my "lion mane" and gave me cute shorter for summer hair. Not bad service. Went here for waxing. Had to wait a long time even though I had an appointment and showed up early. Waxer was OK. Reapplied and waxed in same area several times which caused irritation. However, while I was sitting I watched a haircut and was impressed with the relationship btw the client and stylist. I have a hair appt in a few days.....will update afterwards! UPDATE: 1/28/08 I did get my haircut here. Linda was very nice and did exactly what I wanted. Did not use straightening iron but I didn't ask. I have WAY TOO much hair to impose that on anyone. I will try her again this month. Found a MUCH better waxer btw at L'Vida Spa by Brenman Park off Duke St (AKA NuYu Salon). Love it there. read more

It's a bit pricy, but it's a decent hair cut. I get mine cut by Leslie. She isn't perfect. There were a couple of times that I had to tell her something wasn't even. There was one time she cut off too much. But she was able to fix it before I left the chair. For the price, I expect less mistakes, but I don't expect perfection. read more

I went in to trim my dead ends and had Sasha as my stylist. She was great! Really cute and talkative. She saw that I was apprehensive about cutting my hair and went very slow, showing me how much she was cutting and assuring me my hair would be healthy and beautiful. She even blow dried it straight and it was only $30 for everything! That's the cheapest cut and blow dry I've ever had in this area and I love how it looks! While the salon is not much to look at, just make sure you schedule an appointment with Sasha and you should be fine! :) read more

I have been a customer of Matisse Salon and Spa and specifically the owner Farah for several years, and I always leave my appointments feeling so happy with my look and appreciative of Farah and her staff's talent and supportiveness. I originally found Matisse because I was diagnosed with an auto immune that causes hair loss and extreme scalp sensitivity and I was looking for a salon that carried more natural products. Farah carries several hair color lines known to be more gentle and with less strong chemical ingredients, and I really feel that Farah listens to my concerns due to my condition and always manages to make my hair look great-which is something I really need as I struggle with my ongoing hair loss. After reading the reviews, it was a with some apprehension I purchased the Groupon. . Being no longer able to go home (NYC) and see my stylist. Purchased the NOW Groupon & it was a great purchase. My hair color is a perfect match for my skin tone & the trim was done as I requested. My hair looks fabulous! The other reviewer who Criticized Farah/Sarah ( I too was confused, as it sounded like Sarah on the phone) Farah spent time looking over the charts for a perfect color match as my hair is growing out. She also spent time speaking with me about what was needed and or wanted. I will be back!!! And it will be with my sister who lives in VA now as well! You cannot please everybody but the other reviewer who wasn't happy with her red tone, should also be aware that red is a very difficult color. I've been going to Farah for more than 25 years (!). When I found out many years ago (the hard way, at another wedding-party salon) that I'm allergic to most hair dyes, she kept looking until she found a formula I can use. She is meticulous about details, and whenever I've had something I thought needed a tweak, she's been happy to comply. I get many compliments when I get a fresh cut and highlights. Plus the staff is cheerful and happy to help. TBH, I don't much like getting my hair done, but the staff is good with that. I made an appointment one afternoon at Matisse on a lark because I had been thinking about having my legs waxed for a while. I'd only had them waxed twice before and the 2nd time was over four years ago. When I got into the room (which was clean and beautifully decorated) I showed the woman my legs and asked if it was long enough. (I had about a week's growth) She said yes and proceded to wax them for about 30 minutes. When she was done I looked down and saw a patch of hair that she attempted to remove but said it was too short and that next time I should wait an extra week longer before coming in. She then hurried out of the room and turned off the light. I later realized that my legs were just as filled with hair after the waxing as they had been when I'd first gotten there. The owner was kind and refunded my money without asking, but I won't be getting my legs waxed ever again. read more

Matisse Salon and Day Spa is an institution in Alexandria, Virginia. It has been there for over 20 years, but the stylists are always up to date on the latest trends. I have tried a range of services here, including colorful highlights when I was younger, sophisticated blended highlights when I was older, ombré treatments in two different colors, complete color changes, haircuts short and long, the brazilian blowout (hair straightener treatment), eyebrow waxing, and a facial. I have never left Matisse without a smile! The service is amazing, from the head massages to the professional blowouts to the friendly faces old and new. Thankfully, Farah gave me an honest feedback that my hair was not in a good shape/health enough to receive a strong chemical treatment due to perms I had not long time ago. I felt a bit disappointed but was totally convinced in what she said. Since I was seeking a change in my hair style for the summer, she suggested a highlight and I agreed. I used a $70 groupon recently and I'm glad I didn't pay anymore than that. My stylist was Sara or Farrah, not sure. I had black roots and leftover dark brown dye on the rest of my long hair. I requested red for my all over color and after it didn't take my stylist thought it was fine since it was at least a hue of red. That's not what I asked for. If so, I could have done that myself and not paid $70. She then told me that if I wanted it red she would have to bleach my hair and that the groupon didn't cover that. That's fine as well since she felt bleaching would damage my hair and didn't want to proceed. I was ok with that. It would have been nice to know that before hand though. The cut was ok. The people were nice but I wouldn't go back to this place. read more

I have been going to this salon for about 10 years now and have always been happy. Farrah, the owner is my stylist. She listens to what you want and always delivers. She often suggests minor changes for your hair style but is happy to cut any way you want. She is meticulous and wants to make sure you are happy with the results. They are very good and very professional - Farah ensures everyone gets regular updated training on the latest techniques. I recently had my eyebrows tattooed by Farah and once again - a great job! I went in with the $70 Groupon for a cut and color. I brought a picture of the cut I wanted. My stylist, Farrah, gave me a shorter version of the same cut. Unfortunately I went in with very long hair, and left with very short hair, so today I am having huge buyers remorse. The cut is cute, and I liked it after they styled it, but now a day later I am considering extensions and cannot wait for it to grow back. I think if it was 2-3 inches longer like I thought it would be that I would like it a lot more. For color I originally wanted strawberry blonde, but after some debate on what that means, I chose a different blonde shade, after 15 minutes (for a color that was supposed be on for 30) I was told my hair was changing fast and it was rinsed out. The color was VERY blonde, too blonde for me. Farrah sensed my unease and after drying it and asking other people in the salon what they thought, put a darker color on. Overall my hair looks ok. For me, it's too short, and the color is pretty much exactly what I went in with, so the $70 was a lot to spend. The staff was nice enough, although I felt like they were annoyed that I did not love the super blonde color they originally made me. read more

This place is fantastic!!! I have never written a review, but this was such a wonderful experience, I had to share. This was my first visit there and was a little apprehensive, but everyone there was so nice. They were all very pleasant, and very courteous - I haven't seen that in awhile. Before even starting anything, the stylist looked at my hair while we discussed options. After she gave me 3 ideas, I told her which suggestion I liked and we got started. I kind had a picture in my head of what it would look like based on our talk, but I was nowhere close. The actual cut and style are absolutely beautiful!!!! I was so happy with everything here!!!!
