Before meeting with Darryl, I shared with several potential videographers about the vision of our video, but it was only Darryl who seemed to have truly understood my idea in detail and was actually excited to do it! With other vendors making me feel like my idea was unrealistic or unattainable, Darryl immediately jumped on board and even chimed in to put his creative twist to it. We knew immediately we found the right videographer! Essentially, I wanted Darryl to capture our long distance story and our journey of having to fly often just to see each other. From the first day we shot, Darryl proved how EXTREMELY flexible he was as he shot at several different locations and during different times of the day. He catered to our schedule and even traveled to LA with us to shoot some raw footage. Darryl knew exactly how to capture the moment and bring out the best in my husband and I without making it feel like it was a production. 90% of the time we didn't even know he was videotaping! We felt so comfortable and genuinely happy during our shoot that we hired him again to interview our families and ended up using those interviews to play at our wedding (instead of a slideshow). Both sides of the families had nothing but good things to say about Darryl! They commented on how comfortable he made them all feel. He even got my extremely shy dad to speak and answer all the questions! Choosing Darryl to create our videos was one the best wedding decisions we made. We love looking back at our videos and remembering how far we've come in our relationship and we have Darryl to thank for that. I have been in countless weddings and have dealt with many friends/families who have been extremely disappointed with their photographers/videographers. My advice is to make sure that your photographer/videographer is not only open to your ideas, but that they can expand on them and breathe life into your vision. Our engagement photo shoot was in Richmond at the local marina. Ever professional, Preston scouted the location prior to our appointment and really turned out some wonderful shots. We did a change of clothes and were finished with our shots in all of 45 mins (which was perfect for our busy schedules and my ADD). He turned around our finished shots in 2 weeks and they were perfect. We used them for everything: Holiday cards, save the date, wedding invitation (video montage), wedding website, you name it, we did it. We hired Preston for the full 8 hours on our wedding day. He was able to shoot both bride and groom before the wedding and even some family shots prior. The ceremony photos he posted on the blog were splendid. He even met with me and the wedding planner the week prior to the ceremony to scout the site and hash out details. We knew at our first meeting with him in person that his photos were beautiful, his work was high quality, and that he would be easy to work with. He accommodated our far flung locations and drove all the way to Santa Cruz for our engagement session and then to Grass Valley for our wedding, both of which are pretty long trips for him. On the day of the wedding, Preston showed up early and worked hard the full 8 hours. Having never been married before I had not a clue how the whole process worked, but trust in Preston to know what to do. He got shots of us, the wedding party, and our family members prior to the ceremony. The man works fast! He also had time to get all the little details before the ceremony. Post-ceremony was a bit of a blur for me and most of the time I didn't even know he was there, but he was catching all of the main events for the evening. I know Preston had to deal with photography demands from our family and wedding party and handled them like a pro. He also tried to catch my misbehaving dogs on film which required a bit of patience. They are very easy to work with. Patrick and Jessie picked a beautiful location, and they were both so patient while I futzed with my toddler son's clothes and hair. (Speaking of hair, seriously if I could get Jessie to come to my house and do my hair like that every day, I would do it. Girl is skilled. And my makeup. I never like when someone else does my makeup, but she made me look amazing and I loved it.) The shoot was easy and fun. Patrick gave great suggestions and made me feel very comfortable in front of the camera. The photos of myself and my son are amazing; this is a really talented team. Their rates are SUPER reasonable. She did the newborn photos of my first child with virtually no hiccups and second time around I tried to book with her and she took a week to reply initially and now I followed up and she still has not replied to book me. I randomly found Karla through an instagram sponsored ad while searching for someone to take my…read morenewborns photos. My interaction with Karla initially was great, even our session went great. Before leaving session, she told me I can expect my proofs in 7-10 days.. on day 11 I emailed her, day 12, day 13 and so on, with no response with an update. Eventually after me bothering her, she emails me back a screenshot she had posted on her Facebook (which I do not follow) saying she would be out until 8/21 due to a family emergency. Which is totally understandable, although I had to bug her for that response. If I hadn't would she have ever reached out to me as the client? Who knows. 8/21 rolls by and no response. I let her know how sorry I was about her situation and hope everything is okay. I let about a week go by and im not getting any response. I'm emailing her almost daily with no word. Finally she sends another email that her family member is in critical condition and it's out of her control. Which once again, I understand and can have sympathy for that but her lack of communication as a business owner to a client was absolutely horrible and making me bitter. I let time pass again to allow her time to "work on my photos" and after a while I thought to reach out again, at this point my daughter is already over a month old and still no proofs and no update. I reach back out for updates and again I'm having to bug her for any response back. She comes back to tell me I have 2 options, 1. Wait for her to finish my proofs when she has time for it and has no ETA on when they will be ready and I get ONE free photo or 2. Cancel and get a full refund.... Both options to me were absolutely ridiculous. I can't retake my newborns photos so what choice did I have right? I basically begged her to send me what she had unedited and I'd find someone to edit them because she clearly could not fulfill her job. She refused and said it was not an option. When all was said and done I ended up wanting a total of 10 photos. 8 free and one bonus one for the delay. I asked if the 10th photo could also be free for the delay and again she refused and told me she had x amount of clients and was behind on all these other galleries like it was my problem. I thought maybe just maybe she could have some compassion and realize giving another free photo wasn't too much sweat off her back. Her contract states that proofs will be given within 7-14 business days and final photos within 10-28 business days. It took 27 business days for proofs and another 12 business days for final photos. My newborn took her photos oct 2nd I got my proofs on Nov 9th!!!!! My final photos on Nov 21st. Just a day before my daughter turned 2 months. I hope she reads this and does better at communicating with her clients because this experience was extremely disappointing with how it was handled on her end from a client perspective. Please do better The photos... beautiful. Her work is amazing and I give her kudos for that. But her lack of communication and compassion ruined the experience and excitement I had for my first child's photos.
