Many years ago a friend bumped his elbow into my front tooth, knocking it in. For decades I resisted doing anything about it. I'd rather get a, well, root canal than get a root canal... The dentist said it was time, at last. And it was feeling funky. Office staff were great, Dr Nealon explained what was going to happen at the consult with no sense of upselling; and during the procedure he exuded a casual professionalism and confidence as things progressed. His help was on top of things too. There was some pain for about 18hrs after, nothing that some high doses of IB couldn't handle. He even came in on a weekend to deal with a time-dependent touch up. No one wants to hear that they need to have a root canal. I had a cracked crown and when my dentist went to replace it he said that I had an infection and referred me to Dr Nealon. Dr Nealon not only did a great job but has a very calm and pleasant demeanor. There are no adequate words to describe the pain emitting from my cracked tooth! My dentist (Dr. Spero@Laurel Smile Dentistry) referred me to Dr. Nealon's office for a root canal. Yikes! I called Friday morning and was fit into an already busy schedule especially since the office closes early on Fridays. I was impressed with the office location, the staff and well because I HATE dental visits (obviously), I was thoroughly impressed with the service. When Dr. Nealon started the root canal, there were 35 minutes left on my parking. He completed the procedure and I still had 9 minutes left! He was careful, gentle explained everything he was doing and I experienced minimal procedural pain after. Granted, to have a strong opinion about who does your root canal indicates that maybe you've had a bad experience, and in the past, I have. So I'm picky. I did a lot of research and chose Dr. Nealon, and he surpassed his rave reviews. He's kind, real, gentle, and communicative. If you've never been traumatized by a bad endo, go to Dr. Nealon and keep it that way. If you have been, look no further. He really is wonderful. He did a great job on this root canal; I just gave him a bad tooth to work on. 4. The receptionist with whom I spoke might well have been brusque because she was sharing the grief of Dr. Nealon who was absent because of a death in the family. 5. He gets 5 stars for being a gracious human being and an outstanding endodontist. Probably the best in the Berkeley area. --- A couple of months ago Dr. Nealon gave a root canal on a tooth. He was paid $1300+ for an hour's work. Today the tooth, not the root, fell off. No trauma, just talking on the phone. No looseness the day before or earlier. Dr. Nealon's office said, 'Too bad, so sad. Go see your general dentist and get a crown.' Of course, that happens with root canal teeth, but rarely so soon. I've had the misfortune of running the gamut of dental procedures. You see, my teeth are made of stale marshmallows. In March I broke a tooth lower left molar. It didn't bother me and with a pandemic raging I figured I'd ride it out until things cleared up. Well that hasn't happened, and Stay Puffed No.19 wasn't having it anymore. My dentist referred Dr. Nealon and I couldn't have been better taken care of. They got me in THAT DAY! The COVID precautions alone were way above par. HEPA filters and windows open, Repeated handwashing, Full PPE. Then it was game time. Dr. Nealon and crew were gentile and always checking in on my comfort. I fell asleep for a spell. I was referred to this office by Dr. Needham from Campus Dental for a root canal, and I'm so happy with my experience with Dr. Nealon and his staff! They also have a good COVID protocol in place where you rinse your mouth before being seen and wash your hands Dr. Nealon was incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and courteous and made sure I was comfortable during my two visits. I have INTENSE dental anxiety (like panic attacks during a cleaning) and avoided any dental work for years. I finally came to my senses and got on my fixing-teeth-journey. I was referred by Dr. Truta due to my need for a root canal. I expressed my concerns and fears and Dr. Nealon was very kind and reassuring. I used the nitrous and was able to put on headphones to help drown out the sound (I also brought a stuffed animal). I can't believe the root canal was so painless. I am so grateful to Dr. Nealon and his team for taking good care of me, listening to me, and treating me with care and respect. Long, sad story with a happy ending: after my regular dentist told me my tooth needed to be extracted, he sent me to an oral surgeon, Dr. Khalil, at Bayside Surgery, who was fabulous, to do the extraction. Dr. Khalil, listened to me and we jointly decided to try a conservative treatment, a root canal, first in hopes that the tooth would NOT have to be extracted. He sent me to Dr. Nealon. Dr. Nealon did the root canal, actually a RE-root canal--it was not done properly the first time. He took the time to explain, answer all my many questions, researched at home for an antibiotic I could possibly take, stood beside me explaining in detail the panoramic x-ray. Another words, I felt he really cared about me, not just as a source of income, but as a quite worried person. He was professional, down to earth and just plain nice. And, oh, pain? I did not feel the prick of the first anesthetic. Yes, it hurt that evening--what re-root canal wouldn't?--, but a half bufferin sent me to a good night's sleep and no more pain. Let's hope that you won't need to make a visit to Dr. Nealon's office. In the sad chance that you do, you're in absolutely capable and caring hands. Having cracked my tooth eating popcorn at the end of last year, I went through a giant ordeal figuring out the best treatment when the specialist in my normal dental practice wanted me to get an extraction/implant. Dr. Nealon was referred to me by another dentist who insisted that he was the best. Needing an emergency root canal before flying out of the country, by some miracle Dr. Nealon was able to get me in the morning before my flight. To say that I was terrified of getting a root canal is an understatement. Having been blessed with good teeth (thank you genetics) the only major procedure I'd ever had is a filing. You hear the horror stories of root canals. What stands out so much is the fact that Dr. Nealon has amazing bedside manner and makes a lot of effort to ensure the patient is as comfortable. His presence is so calming, he could have a side gig as a meditation facilitator! Before the procedure he took a lot of time answering my questions. Throughout the procedure he checked in with me frequently to ensure I was okay. He also went above and beyond, doing the build up for the dentist who was going to be putting in my permanent crown so they wouldn't have to do it. Frankly I owe a lot to Dr. Nealon for making sure that my cracked tooth could be saved, as well as for letting me enjoy my awesome vacation! What a legend. I came here knowing I was paying for higher-quality care and I got it. I had seen probably 5 dentists about this infected tooth underneath a crown. Over and over again I was told it's possible a root canal could cause a crown break, and there could be no tooth underneath for a build-up and I'd have no tooth! Just writing that I feel better about waiting a year to take care of it. Cut to Dr. Nealon. He very plainly says after looking at the x-ray "looks like there's enough tooth there." Well, that's a relief. He also says he's confident he won't break the crown, but also didn't lie and said it was possible. That's a really bold thing to say, because imagine if he did break it, I'd be quite sad. He didn't break it. He was also the first person to inform me my tooth was abnormal because it had two roots. Five dentists, no one else told me that, and I ask a lot of questions. The procedure was quick and painless. I think he has good anesthetics or something because even with the local gel before the needle, I didn't feel the needle at all. That never happens. I always have *some* tolerable pain I grit through in dental work. Nothing here while he's drilling down towards my jaw. I'm so relieved. I went from wondering if I'd need an implant and would have no teeth after a root canal, to walking away with an infection treated and my tooth intact. In the end, Nealon was worth the price because if I saw a lesser-quality doc for a root canal that broke my crown, I'd be paying a lot more. Thanks! read more

Dr. Nealon...I LOVE..(is it weird to say you love your endodontist?!) this guy! I had been experiencing pain which I could have sworn was coming from the lower right, rear area. Nope! Dr. Nealon found the tooth causing pain (upper rear...go figure) and explained nerve connections and migrating pain. Needless to say I needed a root canal. Pre procedure Dr. Nealon was very thorough with his explanations. During the procedure, he often checked in to let me know approximately how much time was left and reassured me the process was going well. Here's the kicker..wait for it.... I FELL ASLEEP DURING THE ROOT CANAL! what??!!...lol I've already passed your info on to the lady in line at the post office Good experiences have a way of randomly being shared! This is (I believe) the first review I've ever written on Yelp. I was referred to Dr. Nealon for a root canal treatment. I happen to suffer from a lot of anxiety relating both to breathing issues and post-nasal drip when it comes to longer dental procedures. I found Dr. Nealon incredibly caring and helpful around this issue. And I'd like to add that it wasn't just the kind of "professional caring" that one sometimes finds in the medical and dental professions. Rather, Dr. Nealon repeatedly struck me as a person who genuinely does care from the heart about other people. This alone was of great help in relieving my anxiety. (I have been fortunate enough to meet just one other dentist--Dr. Tom Adame, now retired--and a couple of MDs about whom I also felt this way.) Between us, Dr. Nealon and I worked out an approach around my anxiety that worked for me quite well. As for his technical expertise, I am obviously not qualified to judge that. However, I did notice that several times he spoke to his assistant after checking the current X-ray to say that such-and-such needed just a little more touch up. Everything about his attitude and his attention to detail from beginning to end made me trust in his expertise. Additionally, he does offer some discount to those of us without insurance. One more thing--I noticed below a one-star review from some years back. First, please be aware that it was written a long time ago. Second--and I am only guessing here, and we are all entitled to our own opinions--but sometimes if you read between the lines you may sense that some critical reviews reveal more about the person writing them than about their target. I have had nothing but incredibly friendly and caring treatment at the Endodontic Care Center. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE (Alicia, Sandy, Dunja, and Dr. Nealon) is sooooo nice! I was super nervous the first time I went in for a consult, but the calm I felt when I walked in the office took that away immediately - there are lotuses and fountains and pretty windows and calming paintings on the walls!). Then Alicia smiled and started chatting with me about celebrity gossip (It's my guilty pleasure, leave me alone) and I knew I was going to have a good experience! Even the bathroom made me feel calm! Dr. Nealon is really thorough and talks about the entire process of the root canal, including what happens before and after. I've even asked him questions while he's looking through that uber-cool microscope and he's always taken the time to answer them, with patience, and most importantly, without judgment! (I hate when dentists judge my mouth - don't you??) Sandy and Alicia are really helpful when it comes to feeling ok about paying a very large bill (hey, insurance only covers so much), and they have been great about working with me to set up a payment schedule. I've now had two root canals done, and I'm going in for my third (I just have really crappy teeth and have had really crappy dentists) next week. It's strange, but I'm actually looking forward to it!! Really, I'm just looking forward to wearing those awesome blue, green, or purple glasses!! My wife needed a root canal and she has had some fail in the past due to very tricky roots I really wanted to give this tooth the best possible chance. Being in the health care profession myself and actually many friends who are in the dental field I wanted to do my research and find the best possible place for her to go to get the procedure done. Dr Nealon came highly recommend from my friends who were in the dental field. I did my own research on Dr Nealon and found that he did his training at Harvard and UCSF, in healthcare those are the best places in the world to train and they only take the best and brightest. I also liked that Dr Nealon used the most current and high tech equipment to do his root canals. I researched other providers in the area and no one has invested in the type of equipment Dr Nealon has. (Make sure if you are shopping around that the dentist preforming your root canal 1. Is a Endodontist, 2. Uses a surgical microscope 3. Uses 3D X-rays 4. Has a machine called the "gentlewave" to help clean the root canal). My wife went to him and she is very well acquainted with root canals and was very impressed by the care she received. She said it was painless. Well, here I am writing a 5 star review about getting a root canal. go figure. I actually found the procedure fascinating. Dr. Nealon clearly knows what he is doing and it's fascinating to watch. My root canal was a little complicated because my nerve space split into two. In the x-ray you could clearly see how it branches and one branch was pretty curved. It obviously took technique to feel out those two branches. I felt like I was watching a mechanic who really knew the specifics of a particular model of car. He's a specialist, and he knows what he is doing. Avoid him at all possible if you can, but if you need a root canal he's your guy. read more
