I write many reviews on this, that, and the other thing. I always try to keep things in perspective when I review people or a place. If you are reading this, you are probably in need of a medical professional. I mean, nobody reads these for fun right? Six months ago I was taken to the ER . At 11 pm nurses came into my room to tell me I was going downstairs for emergency surgery and they would contact my wife. When I woke up next morning I had a hole in me as big as a coffee cup saucer. I also had colostomy bag attached to my waist. The surgeon that did the surgery on me, from what I understand now, probably saved my life. When the surgeon came in the next morning, he told me how close I was. He also assured me that I wouldn't live with on account of he could removed after the gapping hole closed up. After the the hole did heal, we started to reach out to that doctor to remove the colostomy bag. Crickets! Doctor would not even return my wife's, my home care, nurse or even my calls. We gave up on and got the names of two other doctors who do the procedure. My wife and I were so afraid to have to live with this thing for the rest of my life. It's Dr. I went to it told us how difficult the procedure was and the scar tissue was so bad from the surgery and on and on. Now we were terrified! Especially me. I didn't know if I could live with that thing and, was actually pretty sure I couldn't. Then we heard of DocSchultzel. We heard about his robotic surgery he did. We had to try. When we met him, it was amazing. Finally !! someone was optimistic. He wouldn't make any guarantees but for our conversation it was clear this was gonna be our guy. The other doctors focused on how bad my situation was. DocSchultzel focused on the positive. I believe the other Dr s were intimidated. Not Dr Shultzel. I probably don't need to say how amazing of a doctor he is., All you have to do is read his reviews ! What's just as important is his supporting cast starting with Emily! Emily, my wife and I cannot ever thank you enough.!! We love you, kiddo! These people are so on top of their game it is mind blowing! They are like a well oiled machine. If you had told me a few months ago that a man would change my life by tying rubber bands around my butt grapes, I'd have said you were nuts. But here I am, writing a glowing review for Dr. Schultzel--aka The Butthole Whisperer. I came in with hemorrhoids so bad they had their own zip code. Within minutes--minutes!--Dr. S. had them banded like they were VIP wristbands at a music festival. Was it the most comfortable few minutes of my life? Absolutely not. Did I walk out feeling like I'd been given a new lease on sphincter-based happiness? You bet your sweet behind I did. The man is calm, efficient, and shockingly nonchalant about staring straight into the abyss. It was virtually pain-free after the procedure, and now those pesky little problems are gone for good. I am beyond grateful for Dr. Schultzel, his team of Physician Assistants (especially Harper Smith who exceeded my expectations) and the entire team at Sharp Memorial Hospital. From my first consultation to post-surgery care, they were professional, compassionate, and highly knowledgeable. I was nervous about my minimally invasive colorectal robotic surgery, but they took the time to explain everything and made me feel completely at ease. The procedure went smoothly, and my recovery has been much better than I anticipated. The bowel prep was the easiest I had been through as compared to my previous colonoscopies. I feel healthier and more comfortable than I have in years. My bowel movements are normal, more regular and lost over thirty pounds as a result. Dr. Schultzel and his team are great! I had an inguinal hernia that needed to be repaired and I wanted the best doctor I could find. I ultimately selected him because of his confidence, the use of the robot, and overall thoroughness in making me feel comfortable with having the surgery. He has done multiple surgeries for my wife and the results are always outstanding. This alone, gave me a solid piece of mind knowing I would be in great hands. Especially since this was my first surgery. Hopefully I won't have any other needs that will require his attention. I had been seeing Dr. Schultzel for over a year for what were supposed to be routine in-office treatments. However, due to his practice's excessive overbooking, scheduling became a nightmare. He routinely scheduled over 20 patients at the same time, forcing me to wait over an hour past my scheduled appointment at every visit. After enduring this for far too long, I've decided to seek care elsewhere. I don't doubt Dr. Schultzel's clinical competence, but his practice model prioritizes quantity over quality. Just today, the office was packed with more than 17 patients--many of whom were elderly or disabled--leaving some standing while another seven waited outside in the hallway. One man had brought his disabled father for an appointment and had been waiting for two hours for an appointment they had arrived early for. Of the five appointments I had with Dr. Schultzel, all required me to wait over an hour and a half for a simple in-office procedure that takes only about four minutes to complete. On top of that, his closest clinic was a 30-minute drive for me, and his office staff rescheduled four out of my five appointments due to "unforeseen circumstances"...No doubt that these cancelations became a common occurrence due to him spreading his availability too thin. Additionally, Dr. Schultzel is neither approachable nor particularly attentive to patient concerns. He often comes across as curt, making it difficult to ask questions or feel heard. If he were part of a large hospital system with strict patient quotas, that might be understandable--but this is his private practice. He chooses to run it this way, which makes his disregard for patients' time and money even more insulting. In sum, my medical concerns were never fixed due his inability to provide realistic and reasonable availability for appointments which lead to large lapses in my care. I genuinely hope that he and his staff see this review and realize they need to reshape the way they manage their patients. If you value your time, your dignity, and a provider who actually listens, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere for care. read more

I totally recommend Dr. Mathew Schultzel, DO. His diagnoses and experiences are the best in his field. I was a patient of another specialty Dr in Scripps of of UTC area for almost 3 years which was useless and not only it was a total waste of time and money, but I was not getting any better with lots of pain. As soon as I switched to Dr.Schultzel, I started healing and feeling better. He told me right away about my problems and he came up with a the right process and medication to help me heal faster. I won't get into details, but overall fantastic experience. It is damn near impossible to get an appointment with a specialist in SD that isn't 2 months out. Not the case with Dr. Schultzel. Dr Schultzel's encounter from the start of my Hernia surgery to the end was nothing but magnificence. The patience of the staff, while working with my accommodations when it came to work, scheduling appointments, etc was ever so great. His front desk receptionists, Rachel and Romi, had a very high welcoming demeanor, and were very friendly and professional. As well, were very helpful when it came to filing paperwork such the EDD, LOA paperwork, etc. During the surgery, and the post care, all was handled with good hands, and Dr. Schultzel made sure that everything with my health was followed up with and taken care off. The calmness of the doctor, along with the front staff returning any of my missed calls/messages brought me ease to my procedure/after-care. Overall, the atmosphere of this location is what gravitates me to keep coming to here. Dr Schultzel is an excellent surgeon. When I was referred to him by my gastro I assumed it would take a very long time to get an appointment. It was a scary time and I was so appreciative that I received a call right away and was able to get in the following week. He performed a robotic surgery on my colon and most importantly I felt safe and informed. His office even scheduled another pre op appointment at my request because I had a few more questions I didn't think of initially. He and/or his PA visited me at the hospital daily while I was recovering. When I had questions after the surgery I called the office and always received a call back with recommendations and if they weren't sure they checked with the Dr and called me back. Rushed and lacking in empathy. he didn't even bother asking me my name or mentioning it before he went straight to the exam. He told me he's going to insert an "instrument" and then proceeded to do so very quickly. I didn't even know what instrument this was. Then he proceeded to tell me something big as if he just informed he thought I had the common cold. When I tried to ask follow up questions or clarify about specific treatments he said "it's all in the pamphlet." Since he appears to be very defensive in his answers to others, I don't expect him to consider making any changes to his practice so I am just here to share with others my experience. His front desk is also disorganized. I'm shocked by the positive reviews here. If you aren't concerned about the sensitivity of the issues in the area he is treating and don't mind abruptness feel free to see him. Dr. Schultzel is absolutely amazing. My Dad has had GI issues for many years and had a poor quality of life. Immediately after surgery we saw a change for the better. It has been 2 weeks post surgery and he is able to eat anything and has not had any of the previous stomach issues. The staff is fantastic as well. Dr. Matthew Schultzel performed a Robotic umbilical hernia repair with mesh for me 2 weeks ago. He was able to get me in right away for a consult and Emily was able to get me scheduled for surgery the following day. He has wonderful bedside manner and performed a beautiful surgery on my hernia with little scarring. You can tell he really cares about his patients and Emily is quick to resolve any questions or concerns that a patient may have (ask for her if you have any questions). I just saw Dr.Daniel Burgess yesterday for my 2 week follow up and he was great! Answered all of my questions and was very kind and sincere.
