Update: I received a call back from the office within an hour of posting this and was able to get my labs scheduled! I appreciate the issue being addressed so quickly and wanted to update my note accordingly. Thank you! ---------------------------------- This review is not for Dr Paredez, who is honestly a wonderful doctor - but for his office. It is literally impossible to get in touch with anyone there. I've tried calling multiple times throughout the day, waited on hold for 15+ minutes only for someone to pick up the phone and immediately hang up. I've tried leaving a message both on the phone and on their site - no response most of the time, occasionally a call back (roughly 1 out of 5-6 times). I was told the office would contact me to schedule labs but of course, nobody did, so now I am just waiting indefinitely. I rarely post Yelp reviews, but am so frustrated with the quality of care here that I have to look for alternatives and hope that enough such reviews will get the attention of the doctor and perhaps something will change eventually. I plan to look for alternate care- not because of the doctor (who is, again, wonderful) but because there is just no way to ever get in touch with anyone in this office. read more

Dr. Paradez is great! My gastroenterologist retired and I had a question. My husband had come here and really liked and trusted Dr. Paradez; his own primary care doctor says he comes here. I got a telehealth appt for him to look at my records - and he said it was clear why my doctor had made the recommendation she did (even if in other circumstances, people normally need to come in for a colonoscopy). Great that he explained it so well and saved me having to get a procedure! And my husband had a very easy experience here with his. Dr. Paredez, you are a wonderful doctor. The two people who referred me to you spoke highly of you. You did my colonoscopy and all of your staff were wonderful- from the intake nurses to the Anesthesiologist. There is nothing negative I could say about them. The issues I have and had are the Assistants (Amber and Cinthya). Calls were made, messages left but were continuously ignored. I had an esophageal manometry procedure done on November 14, 2023. To date, December 19, 2023, I still have not heard anything from your office. In frustration, I authorized my Primary Care and ENT Physicians to request that all my records be transferred to them. That, too, were ignored. Wouldn't it be common courtesy and a practice of professionalism to respond to your patients on a timely manner, or at least, give them the respect they deserve for choosing you as their doctor? Scheduling six out of 8 appointments over the past 1.5 years (telling me 3:30 then Dr. Paradez wondering where i was for the video appointment at 2:30 PM ... another two times canceling the appointment w/o telling me in advance. A third time, I rec'd a phone message to CONFIRM my appointment, then the day of the appontment I waited for 40 minutes assuming Dr. Paradez was running late---I phoned, "No, we left a message to cancel the appointment; I explained that I listened carefully to the phone message 2 X and it said "to CONFIRM" the appointment. In other instances, they screwed up the time or said there had been no appointment scheduled (depite it being carefully written on my calendar!). I am detail oriented, highly organized, and had the times and dates on my calendar; they were wrong, not me. It is almost impossible to connect with anyone there by phone. They only have umpteen messages that they will get back to you w/in 24 hours. Some times they do, sometimes they don't. Some things can't wait. I have an appointment tomorrow. Today, w/o warning I got a text message with links to forms. Form 1 was lengthy and took at least 15 minutes to fill out. I had missed one question, I swiped the smart-phone screen to scroll back to what I might have missed, whereupon the smart phone screen changed to something utterly different. I went back to see if my answers were saved on the form; no they weren't. The form was blank. No way was I going to spend another 15 minutes filling out the form only to maybe have it get accidentally closed and blanked out again. Pissed, I deleted the text message along with the links to the forms. No idea if the forms were mandatory before my follow-up appointment or not. (And not every one has a smart phone that texts, let alone a smart phone at all. If my parents were alive at 95 and had GI issues, they would not have smart phones let alone be able to type on a tiny text keyboard. I will probably stop going to La Jolla Gastroenterology Group (LJGG) and Dr. Paradez (though I've been a patien of his for over a decade) as I am fed up with the impossiblity of connecting with someone there in a timely manner, their recent errors in schduling or keepin my appointments, and now that even though I had gone to LJGG for over 20 years (previously Dr. Nebel and Dr. David Roseman), they now have this mandatory form to fill out with every detail under the sun of family history, health history etc, (that Scripps and Sharp do not mandate for their GI MDs.) LJGG already has 95% of that information orm me; all they really need is medication changes and health issue changes---they do not need, yet again, my date of birth, who inmy family died of what, did I ever use tobacco, etc., ad nauseum. None of that has changed. My parents died of what they died of---that did not change. I never used tobacco--that did not change. My date of birth---that did not change. Good grief! Years ago there were four or five MDs there. Years ago they answered the phone when you called; you could speak then and there to a human being. Dr. Nebel and Dr. Roseman were phenomenal. Dr. Paradez has been good too---when you can actully book an appointment with him (that isn't changed or deleted by ineptness----which Dr. Paradez blamed me for!) And somewhat aside form the point, back in 2016 when I asked Dr. Paradez I give up!!!!! read more

I have been seeing Dr. Paredez for over 15 years. During this time I have had over 5 endoscopies & colonoscopies. Not the most fun. Dr. Paredez is human, his staff is human, and sometimes they have busy, very complicated days. Of course, as a patient, I feel like my case should be first, but there are true emergencies and other people who are ahead of me. I have yet to go to any Dr office and be called on time. Dr. Paredez is one who sees you close to your appointment! I have also been the emergency case that makes him late for appointments. It's never intentional, and I'm glad he is as thorough as he is. Dr Paredez is extremely knowledgeable in his area, and was referred by two of the "Top Doctor's" in San Diego. He has saved several lives of people i know personally by finding cancer early. His skills as a clinician is what every patient needs. If there is a bad day, and you have to wait... think of the person he is helping. It could be you one day. His office staff works very hard, but they are not infallible. They are amazing and do their best. Have I felt like they have forgotten me.:. Yes, I did experience it once. This physician has an excellent bedside manner, and I felt extremely comfortable & safe undoing my first colonoscopy and EGD. His highly trained nurse anesthetist administered propofol and I was out for the entire procedure, waking up shortly after they were done. The staff are professional, kind and thorough. I felt compelled to write this positive review because I was nervous going into this - even though I was referred by my highly reputable internal medicine Dr. She was spot on in referring me to this office. The staff all seemed happy to be there and seemed to respect & enjoy working w Dr Paredez. This is important because it shows they take pride in their work and in turn will take good care of you. If you have any doubts, don't. You're in good hands. Literally!! Contacting the office beforehand mostly involved going through their automated system & waiting for a call back. A tiny bit of patience on your end will ensure you get in touch and get the best care once you're seen in person. Lastly, they did offer to call in the pills for my prep which I tolerated with no issues. It was a $30 co-pay and worth it. Good luck! Dr paradez is a great doctor who listens to his patients when I was in San Diego he was closer but know I live in los Angeles I willing to drive to him. He makes sure I am ok. Recently my mom was in the hospital up in la he personally called me after I sent him lab results he agreed I need iron I refuse to take iron supplements I want thru iv he totally understood why. Apparently they are giving out MD's like drivers licenses these days. Worst experience of my life. I was having extreme burping to the point where I had to start cancelling events and staying home. My stomach was hurting constantly, no matter what food I ate, some foods made it worse. I finally went to Dr. Paredez thinking he might be able to help me. He told me to stop using cannabis and that that was the cause. I explained to him that I had stopped for 2 years and still burped constantly, but it fell on deaf ears. I stopped and of course nothing changed. He then scheduled me for an endoscopy. I made it clear that I did not have insurance and he said it would cost $750. The day of the procedure the nurse (male asian, very nice and thankful for him) notifies me that it will cost an extra $250 for propofol. He was confused as to why the doctor added that instead of the usual barbituate+fentanyl that everyone else gets. The nurse decided that me being put on propofol was ridiculous and went with the standard route. As I was laying on the gurney nearly headed towards the procedure room, another nurse came up and started talking about how the colonoscopy is rather uncomfortable. I said I was getting a endoscopy, she said "oh whoops" and ran off with her clipboard... Right before the procedure I was burping uncontrollably as usual, and Dr. Paradez said, word for word, "lay off the weed bro", as if I'm some bro of his. Extremely unprofessional. As I mentioned, I had laid off of it and don't even use cannabis any more. I would never be your "bro", bro. I get the results back and he says for me to start taking double doses of Peptid AC. Really? That's the cure. Throw a bandaid on the symptom? I then received the bill which was much more than the original $750 agreed upon. I went in to the office to contest the bill, and the lady in charge of billing was actually quite friendly. Oh, and I finally figured out on my own what was causing the burping. I had an overgrowth of bacteria from my large intestine that crept up into my small intestine (SIBO). I cut out all sugars and carbs and have never felt better in my entire life, no thanks to Dr. Paradez. FYI: This guy is a part owner of the La Jolla Institute of Endoscopy, can you say conflict of interest. STEAR CLEAR OF THIS GUY. He is a joke. He is rude and doesn't listen. He shouldn't be practicing medicine. He should be cleaning toilets. I have proof and documentation of everything I said above if any of you have any doubts. read more

Dr. Paredez has that rare combination of medical competence and great rapport with patients that makes him an exceptional doctor. I like that he starts his consultations by speaking with the patient in his office and really listening to their concerns. (I have been to GI docs who immediately get you into the hideous and shameful buttless gown and snap latex gloves on while barely acknowledging your presence!) Dr. Paredez is personable, avoids using too much medical-speak without being condescending. Dr Paredez must have been having a bad day when I saw him. I would never refer anyone to him. He was sarcastic, obnoxious and rude. Kara is right - digestive issues are difficult to diagnose but unlike her experience Dr. P did not ask very many questions. The few that he did ask were all answered on the questionnaire they have you waste your time filling out prior to the visit. Last Fall my OBGYN recommended Dr. Paredez for my first routine colonoscopy because they are now to begin at age 45 (I'm 49). I called for an appointment and didn't hear back. So a couple of weeks later, I called again and spoke to Cinthya Pena. She said that I needed to fill out forms and then they would call me, asked for my email and sent the paperwork. I filled it out and faxed it to her. Again, I did not hear back and had to call her. She said that they now needed a copy of my medical ID card (not included in her original request). I faxed that over. Then again, crickets. Nothing. I called again and was asked if I wanted to come in for the colonoscopy the following Tuesday. I said yes and asked for the address. Cinthya said she would email it along with instructions and asked for my pharmacy to send over medication. On Friday (after I had called her to to ask about insurance) she left me a message assuring me that my insurance would pay for the anesthesia. My email has been the same and on file with them since I first made verbal contact with Cinthya in December. There was no email sent to me or instructions for the procedure. Today, the day before the colonoscopy and after I have paid the $90 for the medication, made arrangements to take off work, had my mother make arrangements to take off from work to take me, etc. I call to find out where the procedure is to take place and Cinthya says she's sorry that she hadn't sent me the instructions and does so. I read them and I was supposed to have stopped iron supplements and things like advil 5 days ago, had a specific diet, etc. This is my first colonoscopy. The way I've had to proactively, consistently, pursue them to get this done feels like I'm asking them for a favor or asking for a free procedure. Today when I asked Cinthya if they had an internal process to send out instructions a certain number of days prior to the procedure so people could prepare accordingly, she said, "nope" with the attitude you would expect from a disgruntled teenager. This may be a routine procedure but it's my body and it's important to me. I am trusting a doctor I have never met, going under anesthesia, and taking time off from my busy schedule. I am not ordering at the local fast food drive through. I now distrust the competence of the Doctor, had to call my OBGYN to tell her because it makes me pause to think that she would refer me to someone like that, and I'm going to my primary care to see who she recommends. Doctors may not be aware of this but if your office staff is this incompetent, it reflects directly on you. It makes me question your competence as a Doctor. It was not one oversight but a series of consistent neglectful acts that make me lose confidence in your practice. read more

When I was in the hospital with severe liver failure, he acted quickly to prescribe the lifesaving treatment that made my survival possible. Today, I had an endoscopy with no sedation with Dr. Paredez, and I could not expected to have gone any better. Dr. Paredez did an amazing job and his friendly attitude helps you feel much at ease. His staff at La Jolla Endoscopy was also wonderful and willing to answer any questions i had. They were all very patient with me and made sure everything went well. i strongly recommend him. He is young and is trained in the most up to date procedures. I now have to wait for the results of the biopsies, but his calm attitude tells me everything will be ok. His office is very busy (as you would expect any good dr to be) so consults are fast, but to me this is worth it because i know patients are seeking their services. No pre-interview, lined me up on the next table with no thought of me being a bit nervous, did not listen to me when I advised the sleep medication wasn't working and sent me through the butt chute screaming all the way. This experience with Dr. Paradez is to be repeated again-no question. I am now his cheerleader. He has an incredible intuition acknowledged when he met with me prior to the procedure. Deep sleep was recommended by him after meeting with my type A personality. I did not mention my prior experience until after he suggested deep sleep.THANK GOD!. In June 2012 my gastroenterologist retired and he referred me to Dr. Edward Paredez. I have had four abdominal surgeries, the last one in November 2013. Dr. Paredez has recommended outside resources that have benefitted me. He advises me on doses and kinds of medications to take. He was very responsive to me after my most recent surgery when I became very sick four days after returning home from the hospital. He got involved and got me the medicine that eliminated the problem. I am totally satisfied with having him for my doctor. read more
