Similar to other reviews, sometimes customer service is all that matters. We reached out to Matthews Fence to have some repairs done to an existing wood fence after a pool company essentially destroyed our gate and a section of fence in removing it to make way for their equipment. I had reached out to a handful of companies and most wouldn't do such a "small job" so I didn't collect any estimates otherwise. Matthews Fence's quote was a bit higher than we expected but, as we'd been dealing with the problems for 5+ years, we decided to just go for it. After receiving the initial estimate, I replied to ensure everything we expected was included (as the estimate was just a scribbled note), received a response confirming, and agreed to move forward. A voicemail was left for me later that day by Britt, asking for a deposit. As we had concrete working being done, and house painting being done, I chose to wait to return the call until I knew for sure when a good day to have the work done would be (so they weren't in each other's way). 3 business days later, at 9:30am, I look out my window and see a crew has shown up and started working. They've already removed my gate and are carrying wood back to the site. I never received an email or phone call to confirm a date/time, nor did I ever call to provide the deposit. They just showed up. I immediately called Britt to ask what was going on and, despite asking four times why they don't call customers to schedule a date, the question was never answered. Instead, I was told they could call the crew and stop the work. I explained that I didn't want the work to stop, I just wanted to know why they wouldn't let me know the date/time before just showing up. I was told they did everything via email, and I had sent an email that I was good with the quote, so they moved forward. After pressing further about the lack of scheduling, I was told that normally people call them back after a voicemail is left so it's not an issue. Regarding the work being completed: they didn't initially do the job I hired them to do. I specifically called out in my request for an estimate, and in the message clarifying the quote I received, that I wanted the panels on either side of the gate to be reseated so they were once again solid. All that was done was rebuilding the gate, and poorly at that. After reaching out to complain about the quality of work, and lack of completion, they eventually (after 3 trips) made good on everything I needed but, not without Britt repeatedly telling me it wasn't in the "contact" (which I never signed, and had emails to show I requested clarity on). When it came time to collect payment, I filled out and sent a credit authorization form. I put the amount I was to be charged and provided my credit information. When the charge went through, there was an extra $9.60. Confused, I reached out to ask what that was for. I was informed that it was a credit card fee. I then politely informed Britt that, as someone who happens to work for a bank in regulatory risk, they could have a problem in not informing a customer of that fee (there are regulations that require disclosure before charging a card, especially if a specified amount is provided on a credit authorization form). Instead of being grateful for the information and moving on, Britt insisted on getting nasty with me, using all-caps to tell me it was on the contract (again I didn't sign anything) and again play up the idea that they did extra work for me not on said contract (which again, they did exactly what I requested before the initial estimate). Ultimately, between the horrible customer experience, and initial shoddy work done by the crew, I would definitely not recommend use of this company. I wish I had read the other reviews posted here before I made the same mistake. read more

Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. The owner of this company along with her mother that works the phone are some of the rudest people Ive ever dealt with. That is if you can get them on the phone, good luck. If I could give 0 stars I would. This was the WORST experience and I'll never use them again and will tell every single one of my contacts to do the same. I returned home when my fence was done and to my surprise they had drilled a massive post in the middle of my driveway for my gate. This was nor in the contract nor told to me verbally. Then the crew left sawdust all over without cleaning up, threw an empty water bottle and tshirt in my backyard, and they had cut down shrubbery/tree limbs and left them there. I honestly could have gotten over this (other than them ruining my driveway) but it was the rudeness and lack of customer service from the owner and her mother. They continued to blame it on me for not "asking enough questions" which is shocking because I can't question something I don't know happening. They then continued to talk down to me saying "do you even hear what's coming out of your mouth" when I was trying to explain what was wrong. They laughed at me, cut me off, wouldn't let me talk, and kept talking over me anytime I tried to say anything. The lack of professionalism was dumbfounding. While laughing they spitefully offered me $100 off of a $5,000 fence. That was just a slap in the face. They gaslit me so much I ended up breaking down crying over frustration WITH A FENCE COMPANY. I don't say this lightly but these people are horrible. Give your money to a better family who actually cares about their customers. read more

We called Matthews Fence to have a section of our fence removed. We learned from Wayne that they had installed our existing fence several years before we moved in. After getting a quote for the work (removing a 40 foot section of fence), we asked them if they had a LIFETIME warranty on gate adjustment and the replied YES, they would do the adjustments when they came out to do the job. At $790, we chose to decline the work and do it ourselves. When we informed them that we had completed the job and asked about the gate adjustment, suddenly the LIFETIME warranty no longer existed. The job took my wife and I about two hours to complete and we're in our 60s. $790 was a ridiculous price! See the pic. read more

Started not great I came outside to point that there was a underground dog fence and water lines. They didn't care even though I had marked them. The fence looks great I give them that. Lady that came out to give quote was awesome also. I contacted the manager about the broken dog fence and the 28 plastic caps they left all over. He was only worried about they are only responsible for marked utilities not a dog fence even though they never called 811 to mark anything. He didn't ask how can we make this right. It's 100 dollars not a ton to fix but that isn't the point. He was very defensive till I said don't worry I won't make you fix it. Good to know that paying 4900 for a fence and all they care about is the money. read more

Their lead guy for installation has to have a 10 rating. He was polite and without asking explained why he was a bit later than planned. Very acceptable explanation. Went right to work. All we needed was a gate installed in the fence at the back of our property. He explained a few options that we had and he promptly began the install. It was amazing to watch this craftsman work! IMPRESSIVE to say the least. As he was finishing, I just had to share my favorite chocolate with him ! ! ! One of the few craftsmen/workers that I've seen clean up at the end of the task. I contacted this company and ask for a quote. I'm moving into a new home that I'm not physically at yet. I asked for a quote to install a fence prior to moving in because we have several large dogs. I called and no one answered. Several hours later I got a phone call. The representative on the line was not customer friendly or someone that should be answering the phone. She ask what type of fence. I explained it was chain-link and we needed it to go around the entire property with a gate. She then continued to push and asked me what kind of gate I told her it was chain-link. She then practically yelled at me "NO I need to know the length!" I said "that's why I'm calling you so someone can come out and look at it to measure. I'm not physically there and I apologize for bothering you. Thank you and have a good day." Based upon less than a 30 second interaction of someone treating me like I'm an inconvenience for their company only shows that they have absolutely no concern for their clients whatsoever. After posting my reviews the owner of the business contacted me. They ask that I please give them the opportunity to show they do care about their customers. The owner said that she was personally going to go to the property and measure where I needed my fence and gate. When they came out to look at the property they did not measure the backside of the lot for a fence. There is one driveway that leads back to a very large garage. That's where I asked for the gate to be installed. The gentleman that came out to look at my property thought I wanted my gate on the other side where there's absolutely nothing to access. After talking to the owner of the company and the representative that installs the fencing it is comical. I don't know of any place that specializes in only fences that would not look at the entire fence and would not listen to their customer. Once again if you don't know how to measure and you can't understand the simple instruction of where a gate needs to be placed I wouldn't trust this company to install a lightbulb. read more

One of the owners repeatedly told me that mine was a "small job" and they would squeeze me in after completing larger jobs. Maybe that is why they changed my appointment more than once. Don't expect the courtesy of a phone call. They will email you and expect that you are glued to your inbox so that you will find out they are not coming as scheduled. They will show up when it is convenient for them, not the customer. And when you point out their lack of courtesy they will threaten to cancel the job. read more

At the end of day the job wasn't finish by one slat in the planel. Crew left no courtesy note saying they be back, no call from the business office; lack of communication. The crew had piles of dirt in your and our neighbor's yards, back patio covered in mud, left the hose out, etc and the office stated they didn't have to clean up because the job wasn't over yet no communication because it looked like they just up and left. The discarded materials behind our property into the common area said it was "non of our business", they never acknowledge the crew was unprofessional in any way because leaving lunch trash in someone yard is not a problem or wiping their boots off on the front yard garden bricks. When it was all done they damaged the neighbor's mailbox on their way out. Didn't stop to see what they did, just took off. Prior to the job being done we should have known how this would go because when the utility lines had to marked they called us to complain that the lines couldn't be marked because left our old fence locked; if we knew you were coming it wouldn't have been a problem. Also, I'm a teacher and they complained that I didn't answer my cellphone during the school day and thought they had priority over my classroom. read more

Initially got quotes from 3 different fence companies and their price was best. They told us the would start work on a certain date and never showed. I had to call and email and finally someone called back and said due to weather they pushed us back a week. A week later came and nobody showed. After pestering them again someone called and said they will be out and they finally showed and did half the job and said they would returned tomorrow. They never did. I'm hoping they return Monday. Hoping for the best. My neighbors have their fences by them and they appear to do great work. Seems like they just work when they feel like it. read more

My husband stopped in the Hemby Bridge office of Matthews Fencing which is less than 3 miles from our house. He asked to have someone come over and give us an estimate on replacing the gate in our yard. This visit occurred about 3 weeks ago and we have not seen or herd from anyone at Matthews Fencing. The day of installation, the owner came out just to chat and introduce himself which was very nice as well. The workers were very nice, kept my yard clean, and did great work very quickly. In my opinion I would never even have called them. They came to my house, gave me an estimate, signed a contract took my money then never showed up when it was time to do the work. Apparently everyone they have on the calendar gets bumped when it rains. That didn't even bother me so much as them never calling to tell me they would not be coming. Very poor customer service too. Not only did they never call to tell me we got bumped, they started an argument trying to convince me they were right and I was wrong. Who does this to customers? Think twice before calling. They did refund me my money but that was after many heated discussions of them telling me I am wrong they are right. read more

Put gate in wrong location. Make sure you verify where you want the gates. They didn't verify with me prior to install. When I showed them the e-mail stating where I wanted them they stated that they couldn't be expected to remember e-mails because they get a lot of them. Made me feel like a number instead of a valued customer. They did offer a $100 discount on a new gate which is why I give three stars and not just one star. You just need to stay on top of them since they are a volume outfit. read more

Absolutely love this fence company!!! I have had 5 fences at each new home installed by them over the past 30 years. My latest fence was just installed and they do a fabulous job. They were on time for the initial quote. Once I signed papers, it only took a week to get my fence. The workers were very polite and efficient. We hired Matthews fence to install a fence to keep our two large dogs in. Their representative met our dogs, was told of their digging habit, and assessed our property. The recommended wire mesh that was added to our split rail fence is easily bendable and rips. It takes nothing for them to escape. We were told that this wire would be significantly stronger and although no guarantees could be offered for pet destruction, we were given the impression in the sales pitch that this fence would be a solid solution and worth the $2400 investment. One month after the fence was installed, the dogs got out by quickly bending the mesh. I called Matthews Fence and told their representative of the problem. I was told someone would get back to me, no one did. A few months later the same problem happened, and after multiple calls they recommended additional work be done to the fence for $900 but still couldn't guarantee it would keep my dogs in. I am now having to pay $1500 for an invisible fence, which I should have bought in the first place. read more
