The tl;dr version: I ordered a bookshelf and it took 20 months for the order to be fulfilled. Not 20 weeks. 20 months. And after all that, the holes to hold the shelves weren't even properly aligned. The long version: It's August 2024. I want to order a large bookshelf (over 80 inches tall). I'd like to support a small business and get something that's nicer quality than Ikea. I find The Woodland Mills online. The shelf looks good. It's all wood. The price, which includes shipping, is reasonable. The website says that this large-size shelf will take several months to get to me. That's fine. I place my order. Not long after I place my order, I notice that the Woodland Mills website has changed. The shipping time for my shelf is now "16-24+++ weeks." How many more weeks does "+++" mean, I wonder? I am doomed to find out. In April 2025 (8 months after I ordered, so we're now up to 30+ weeks), the owner sends a message that seems to be to all his customers simultaneously. He's apparently been getting a lot of order status update inquiries from us. He provides an extremely lengthy explanation that encompasses everything from tariffs to the cost of wood from Finland to his inability to hire help. Hey, I get it; these are not negligible problems. He's acknowledging that there's a backup. He's implementing some kind of new queue system that should be able to give a more accurate assessment of where we are in line, if not how long it's going to take to clear the line. Okay. Let's see how this goes. In September 2025 (13 months after I ordered, so now we're up to 50+ weeks), I decide to inquire as to where I am in the new queue system. The owner tells me I'm at #12 and that it should be a few more weeks before shipping. In December 2025 (16 months after I ordered, so now we're up to 60+ weeks), I inquire again. Now I'm number 6, but "Tomorrow is our last shipping day of the year," so don't go getting excited. The shelf will be shipped in mid-to-late January. On March 11, 2026 (19 months after I ordered, so now we're up to 70+ weeks), I inquire again, politely but this time with a tone a bit less pleasant than my usually chipper demeanor, requesting either the bookshelf or a refund, posthaste. It will ship the next week, the owner says. "I didn't realize I had any order THAT old," he says. (Apparently the new queue system must not be quite up to snuff.) He apologizes for the delay. That's nice. On April 3, 2026 (so now we're at 20 months, or ~80 weeks): the bookshelf arrives. Now I get to put it together. I manage to do this and discover, when putting in the shelves, that the holes for the shelves are slightly misaligned. In some cases, this just leads to some light rattling when the shelf is placed, easily overcome by the weight of the books on top. In other cases, the misalignment is pronounced enough that it is impossible to use those holes. I did finally find enough usable holes to place the shelves, although not always at the heights that I would prefer. I didn't bother to complain. How many more weeks of frustration would that have engendered? But when I got a mass e-mail from the owner a couple of days ago, offering previous customers "Fast Shipping on Select Bookcase sizes!", I laughed and laughed. Never again. Fool me once, etc., etc.
