This is the second time Ive been ordered to pickup from Maudie's Cafe, in the Last 2 weeks, and both of my experiences were horrible. The first time, I called 3 times to place an order because the website wasn't giving me an options for how I wanted to customize my meal. Every time I called, I was put on "hold" (I say this in parentheses because I could hear everything they were saying, laughing, talking,ect) and was on hold for at least 5 mins, each time I called(which was 3 times). I then decided to order online and received this MESS of a "Stuffed avocado" and it was a MESS (we added chips to it because it was completely uneatable without it). Today was the SECOND time ordering for pickup, I finally got someone on the phone. I asked SPECIFICALLY for plastic wear for both meals, but the hostess or whoever was taking my order was rushing me and every time I asked something she quickly cut me off. At the checkout/pickup window, the hostess/or whatever, was incredibly rude. When I was picking up my order, I noticed a bee in front of the window and proceeded to warn her. She quickly dismissed what I was saying and ,very unwelcoming and dismissively, asked what my name was for the order. Mind you, on the phone she didn't ask for my name, so I told her she didn't ask for a name and proceeded to tell her my order, she cut me off again and said my name, saying she got my name from the caller ID. At the end of the transaction, I took my items but I felt very shitty. Very much like I didn't belong there l. Most of the costumers were white, even though this was a TexMex restaurant. There was nobody I could relate to or didn't look like me (black, hijabi). Idk if this had anything to do with it or if this place just has shitty service. We had lunch here today & it was delicious! My daughter had a vegan bowl, I had the lunch special with 2 chicken tacos & my husband had a breakfast dish. All we're very good, as we're the chips, salsa & queso. We also had margaritas with Avion tequila, that were delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone. read more

I go often to this Maudie's. The chips, salsa, guacamole, and queso are consistently good. The wait staff are friendly, attentive, knowledgeable and easily remember all the substitutions and changes. The last few times, we have sat outside on the front patio which overlooks, but it slightly blocked from, the parking lot- nicely shaded. The inside is spacious but not as large as some of the other locations. The tacos, migas, and power bowl are my go to. They also have a skinny menu. Great value. Tex-Mex is a type of American cuisine that is heavily influenced by the ingredients incorporated into the dishes of the Tejano people of Texas. We were visiting Austin and could not pass up the opportunity to sample this Southwestern culinary tradition. We stopped at Maudies and were seated after a short wait. The patio is airy and welcoming. We studied the extensive menu and ordered a bowl of queso (don't tell the cardiologist!), a Mango Margarita, a Prickly Pear Magarita, the Chicken Tomatillo Enchiladas, and the Carnitas Tacos. The margaritas were cold and deliciously refreshing. Yum! The queso was thick and mildly spiced with a wonderful cheesy goodness. Great with the tortilla chips. The chicken tomatillo enchiladas included pulled chicken, Jack cheese, and a tasty tomatillo sauce with chopped.lettuce, tomato, and sour cream garnish. These were well prepared and were very satisfying with a great tomatillo flavor. Finally, the carnitas tacos came with generous amounts of pulled pork carnitas on corn tortillas with cilantro and onions served with a side of black beans and rice. The carnitas were perfectly prepared and delectable when combined with the chopped onions and cIlantro. So good. We really enjoyed our first visit to Maudies and will definitely return next time we are in Austin. read more

Nice casual Tex-Mex spot in Austin that has a lot of locations throughout the city. I would put it on the same level as Chuy's for comparison. My frozen raspberry margarita was good. This location has a little area off to the side where you can stand and drink while you wait for your table. It's a smaller location and they were fairly busy. They have cute Christmas decor up right now for the holidays, which I liked. The menu is huge and most orders come with rice and beans. I ordered the fajita beef enchiladas. The meat was tasty and plentiful. It seems like their dishes have a lot of onions on them and the waiter was nice enough to ask if I was ok with that. Chips and salsa were decent. The salsa had a little kick to it. Overall, would return again or try some other locations throughout the city. read more

Came here for a quick breakfast. I got a couple Tatiana's tamale tacos and a coffee nothing to crazy. Honestly for the price ($3.75/taco) it wasn't a bad deal. All in all walked out of here spending $15 for a breakfast. Tacos were of good size as well. I'd say the tamale part of the taco was slightly underwhelming but they didn't skimp on the eggs either so there is some give and take. Salsa was pretty basic, not too spicy but I should've asked if they had a spicyer salsa in the back. You can always tell the quality of a Mexican/tex mex place by the quality of their tortillas. These tortillas were pretty average, don't think they were homemade but they got the job done. Don't come here expecting anything mind blowing but had fast and friendly service, food got the job done for what I needed, so I'd throw it up in the W column. read more

The food was standard Mexican fare. I ordered potato raja tacos with a side of black beans and they were just ok. I think a more involved dish would've been more enjoyable. The salsa was delicious! Could've just had that as my meal. The service was a little subpar. Maybe our server was new or just having an off day but he seemed a little out of it and kind of disappeared at the end. Maudies Cafe like many long dated establishment in Austin is suffering from what I call "Take your patrons for granted because they keep coming" attitude. While waiting for our table we ordered a Mexican Martini which was disgusting unless you love pure lime juice, no alcohol, and too much syrup. Maudies Cafe needs a bath. There is a dingy dated feel to the place. Our food arrived which besides the salsa was not memorable. Even the queso was fair. How do you screw up queso? I know maudies cafe is convenient for breakfast tacos, and a quick low quality bite, but come on we deserve better. I go to Maudie's nearly everytime I come to Austin to visit family. It's one of their favourite places and they're born and raised in Austin. I'm honestly surprised it doesn't have a higher rating but I don't hate that it doesn't. I feel like the 3.5 stars is like the the whole "the best Chinese restaurants are the places that have 3.5 stars" take (it's totally correct btw). The 7th st location is the original one and the best in terms of food. I can't speak to the drinks because we usually come here for breakfast or lunch but when I went no frills texmex this is what I want to eat. read more

This place is nothing out of the ordinary. The food is mediocre, but I feel like the people just come back for the price and the portions. Service is not too bad, but we came at a busy lunch time and I feel like the desserts at the end were missing a lot of toppings, sauces that the menus said it would have...... so who knows what else was missing from our actual entrees. Yesterday I tried the Marfa Stack for the first time, and it was my favorite thing I've tried from any Maudie's. It's cheese enchiladas topped with two eggs. Worst Mexican food I've ever had. Please avoid unless you like store bought beans, cold store bought tortillas and wet ground beef in the microwaved taco shells. Don't get me started on the "bean dip". There must have been a sale on Hormel Chili because the spicy version made an appearance the night I was there. Possibly the worst queso in Austin and I didn't know a restaurant could mess up queso. But Maudie's certainly found a way. Anyways, please avoid and go elsewhere. Probably the best breakfast in the area I live in, as it's affordable, has a large variety (menu available all day) and close by. Maudie's isn't the best tex-mex in my book, but it's certainly serviceable. I always go for the breakfast tacos - Pete's is my favorite, especially if you can deal with the serrano kick. The eggs are creamy, flavorful and more than enough spice to wake you up in the morning. The tamale taco is also very good (scrambled eggs and pork tamale). Two tacos should be plenty of food for breakfast, and if you're still hungry, just munch on the chips; though admittedly, our batch was a little stale.
