A young lady who lived in Austin when it was still weird told me how East 6th used to have its share of bad hombres. "Good luck getting down that street without getting robbed," she reminisced. One might have felt Odyssean as he braved the muggers and pickpockets in order to reach his very own Ithaca, i.e. Cisco's. The finest Tex-Mex in Austin, despite the working class charm of Original Joe's, comes from the kitchen at Cisco's. The biscuits, softer than Penelope's lap; the breakfast tacos, folded crisper than the crush of her gown; the enchiladas, juicier than her amorous effluvia; and finally, the migas, they're pretty good migas. The dining area is split between a Googie modern room with chrome molding and terrazzo floors; then on the other side is a modern ranch with oak wainscoting and red Naugahyde. I'm sure Christmas lights were hung, every place in Austin has Christmas lights. A very helpful waitress told me that their enchiladas are award winning. Their sauce was more of a meat sauce than a chili pepper sauce, the latter being more common to a Californian such as myself. Still, very good. Not surprising that it won an award. I recommend ordering the migas biscuit. This allows you to sample two dishes in one. Saving money and saving space in your guts. read more

I have a long history with Cisco's -- this was the first place I ever had Mexican breakfast, back when I was a senior at UT -- so I came in with real affection and nostalgia. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. The migas themselves had good flavor, and I still remembered loving the warm salsa served with migas and sausage. But on this visit, everything was served rather cold/tepid, which made the whole meal fall flat. Warm salsa can be wonderful when the plate is hot; when the food is lukewarm, it just doesn't have the same magic. We were first seated in the back room, which felt like a refrigerator, so we moved up front. Unfortunately, the ceiling fans didn't help the food stay warm either. The biscuits were also underwhelming -- somewhere shy of "meh." I wanted to love it again. I really did. Cisco's has history, charm, and a place in Austin memory. But breakfast needs to come out hot, especially dishes like migas, sausage, salsa, and biscuits. I hope this was an off day, because I'd love for the old spark to still be there. read more

Passing by this restaurant SO MANY times before, I'm angry with myself I haven't tried it sooner. It is one of the older restaurants that you can tell why they're still in business: they care about the food quality and taste. The fajita was well seasoned and not overcooked at all. The portion is huge, happy we decided to split it one. I especially want to note that the rice side is fresh and not dry at all (I know we all been to places where the Spanish rice looks and tastes dry). And MOST importantly: they turned this biscuit hater around. But the catch is, the biscuits must come from Cisco, nowhere else. Loved this place. I was in the mood for migas and the waitress recommended that I add chorizo to it. I read about their delicious biscuits, so I ordered the migas in a biscuit. I ordered the carne guisada and migas tacos with water * both were okay, but lacked the bold flavor I was hoping for. The tortillas weren't homemade, which surprised me given how long this place has been around. I remember having a similar experience years ago, so maybe I just haven't found my go-to order here yet. Parking was a headache; honestly spent more time circling the block than sitting down to eat. How have I lived in Austin for 12 years and never been to Cisco's? The place is bigger than it looks and features a cute diner style area as well as a couple of dining rooms. Our server was super friendly and answered all of our questions as we perused the menu. We started off by trying the Salsa Toxica. It's their spicy salsa but has a really unique flavor. Then we ordered the Migas and the Huevos Rancheros. The migas were full of chips and veggies and the ranchero sauce was lovely. After seeing the kitchen staff pulling fresh, house-made biscuits out of the oven, we knew we had to try them as well. I never thought I would say this, but one of the best biscuits I've ever had is from a Mexican restaurant. You absolutely have to try them!! They have such a lovely flavor and consistency. The first time I had breakfast at Cisco's was 30 years ago and it was an institution then, so its status at this point is legendary and for THAT ALONE it deserves a five star review. Is it the best breakfast in Austin? No. I'm not going to try and tell you that there aren't better breakfasts out there. But man, they make some tasty migas and the biscuits with the squirt butter are pretty nice. The coffee is average but served in abundance by a friendly staff and the decor will transport you back to a simpler time in this city when the only celebrities were politicians and coaches. A throwback to the Golden Age of Austin, Cisco's has been serving Migas and Huevos Rancheros on East 6th Street since 1950. A classic Mexican Diner, the food is honest, filling and delicious. It's also a great value. Cisco, Willie Nelson and Coach Royal may no longer hang out in its kitschy dining room, with its mis-matched chairs and old photos, but they'd be happy to know that nothing much has changed. We came for brunch, to meet up with friends who hadn't been here since their youth. They stated that the food taste has somewhat dropped from what they remember. Perhaps due to new cooks and such. Regardless, we thought our food was of satisfactory Tex-Mex quality. This large yet cramped restaurant felt somewhat loud as we made our way to the back section for our seats. It is an old building, in the old part of the city, with dated seating. They have a lot of different pictures and such on their walls that I kept glancing at as I made my way to my seat. I've enjoyed coming to Ciscos since I recruited a company exec in 1994. She picked the place because she lived in Austin and I had a home in Dallas. I and my friends were headed to a nearby dance pub and wanted to eat first. There were a lot of nearby restaurants within walking distance but we selected Cisco's based on the menu. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner selections all day long. I got the Cisco Special and really enjoyed everything on it. It had a big ol slab of fajita beef that I sliced up and had a bit with every bite. We got house margaritas on the rocks that were most welcome. My wife got the migas breakfast plate and said it was great too. Ok, it's been a good while since I made it back to my "go to" Mexican breakfast place. Somewhere around here I have a picture of me, an old girl-friend and a buddy. This was a staple in my 20's (don't ask lol), it has not changed much, other than more bar stuff. I remember back when we would get Screwdrivers / Bloody Maria's along with my fave Chorizo / Eggs / Ranchero / Refritos. I'd get a side of fajita or bacon and mix it all together and onto the fresh tortiallas. Well, I did the same thing this time and bravisimo. The area around here is NOTHING like it was back in the day, but things change. Fortunately it is a Texas State Landmark and the developers can't touch it. 75 yrs in business and still delicious. Wanted to check out this historic place because it was one of LBJ's favorites. I understand that breakfast/brunch is the popular time to come, but I'm not a morning person. Thankfully they serve some of their more popular breakfast items all through the day until right before closing (when we arrived). Queso: No one seemed to be talking about the queso, but I absolutely love queso, so had to give it a try. Turns out there is a reason for their queso's obscurity, it's very watery and a little bland. Like your chip will just get a little soaking and won't be able to carry much queso to your mouth. Be prepared for lots of dripping on your table! Picadillo: I'm most familiar with Cuban picadillo, so this Tex-Mex version felt like it had a lot fewer spices. However, it was very flavorful with its meaty intensity and went very well with the fluffy bun it was served on. Migas w/ Beef Fajita: This is why you come here, right? A very hearty dish with a mountain of eggs and tortillas scramble next to lake of red salsa and a bog of refried beans. Everything paired so well together. Also, the $4 add-on of fajita steak is totally worth it because the steak & eggs combo makes it just perfect. Chicken Enchiladas: Was thinking about the cheese enchiladas, but the waiter recommended the chicken because of the green sauce. And yes, he was totally right. What a great place to have breakfast! Cisco's has even around many years, but this was our first visit. I understand this is a favorite place for politicians to grad a bite to eat too. When you first step in, you are surrounded by years of photos and memories. Take you time and check them all out. Our waitress was excellent! An absolute icon to the Austin area....and long before Tex-Mex was a thing. The place dates back to 1950 and it looks like it....and we loved that fact. Service was great. I want to start off by saying that I did have a breakfast here that was decent hence my return...but this meal was awful and I hate to say that, but my nachos were inedible. Chk was cold, cheese was cold, chip was stale and burnt. Pretty dang good! 8 out of 10 stars. The service was personable. The migas are iconic and the biscuits are addictive. Loved the ranchero sauce that came with the migas. And the tortillas were obviously hand-made. The only knock was the price. Chips and salsa were free, but a sprite, an iced tea, 2 migas plates, and a single side biscuit was $36.53 after tax but before tip (surely only a few dollars worth of ingredients). It was worth the iconic experience of an old school Austin spot. Also, it felt good to support them in order to keep Austin local. Come here when you're hungry, because you're going to get a lot of food! (And it's all for a pretty good price!) I came back craving enchiladas. This time I got them topped with chili con carne, but I think I preferred the other sauce I had last time. Once I ordered, I remembered that queso is half off almost all evening (I think it's 4 - 7?) so as a last-minute impulse I ordered that as well. I'm glad I did! It's perfectly smooth and yellow and fake without much spice, just as old-school diner queso should be! The rice and beans were bland, and the chips and salsa nothing special, so next time I might ask them to not serve and waste things I don't want to fill up on.
