I had heard from many friends about Maudie's and decided to give it a try. The best that I can say is mediocre. The salsa was meh and the lunch special, cheese enchiladas with red sauce were definitely processed american cheese or velveta. I ordered the jalapeno ranch dressing for my salad and it was so incredibly spicy hot that I could only tolerate one bite and I love spicy food! The service was great and I hesitate to appear negative but given the build up from friends and this disappointing first experience, I probably won't be going back. read more

I was craving Tex-mex so decided to drop by for dinner. First off, while the atmosphere is good, the service was pretty mediocre and slow. As for the food, it was okay. The chips & salsa were very average, and I ordered the "Regular Dinner," which came with a small beef taco (decent) and two cheese enchiladas which were way too salty. The beans were also super salty, and I overall left feeling as if I had two days' worth of sodium. DoorDash was kinda slow and I had enough time to take a break and study so I went about three weeks ago and got the taco bowl and it reminded me of the food I used to eat in San Antonio. The waitress was lovely and polite. They have wifi and provide chips and salsa so what's there not to love? I went again this weekend, same waitress who is funny and I ordered the chipotle enchiladas (has a kick) and I enjoyed myself. The waitress let me stay a while after my tab was closed so I could study. This is a place I see myself going quite often in the future. Our favorite go-to. Family friendly, down-home Tex-Mex. I'm only speaking of the original location. We are not too interested in the other ones, although we have been. We love the atmosphere here at the original Maudie's. Their cheese enchiladas are the best in Austin, and their Margaritas are very good. We have sampled almost every Tex-Mex venue in the Austin area. The only one that beats Maudie's (by a small margin) is Matt's el Rancho. No restaurant could ever nail the Bob Armstrong dip. I am really picky about breakfast tacos... hell, I am picky about most things, in general. Some folks at the new workplace offered to go get breakfast tacos from Maudie's. This is your typical Mexican food place. They serve great chips and salsa at the beginning of the meal (a little spicy). The restaurant doesn't have a ton of parking outside, so carpool if needed. Food: The enchiladas are great and the chipotle fajitas are fantastic, just a lot to bear with the spices. I've previously had the power bowl and its great. AWFUL! Worst Tex-mex imitation I have ever tasted. Tortillas are literally pre packaged and MICROWAVED. The limonade claims to be "freshly made" but is definitely not fresh at all. As Mexican person this definitely did not meet my standard of being in anyway close to being authentic. Forgot to mention that the red salsa tasted like straight up tomato sauce with a hint of onion. So I woke up hungover on Sunday morning and all I wanted was a healing plate of chilaquiles with lots of cheese and sauce. I called in a pickup order and arose like a phoenix from the ashes, hauling my fragile body into Maudie's. When I got home I was so disappointed I could cry. My chilaquiles was a sad pile of soggy chips with barely any cheese or sauce. I basically ate a plate of tortilla strips you would find as a garnish on a taco salad. Are you kidding me? No one's reviewed this place? Incredible. My girlfriend and I discovered Maudie's over 10 years ago when we used to do our laundry next door and pop over for margarita breaks (critical to the motivational process). Sandwiched between a laundromat and a nail shop with a patio overlooking a parking lot - the food, service and low-key atmosphere were so great, it forced me to break my "no strip mall" rule forever. In fact we loved Maudie's so much, they catered my going away party when I moved to San Francisco. Fast forward ten years and the original Maudie's has now taken over that laundromat next door, and hosts all of Terrytown including Ben Crenshaw. But the margaritas and queso haven't changed, and our favorite waiter is still there with the same unruly hair and AC/DC t-shirt. Only difference is, he probably drives a BMW instead of a VW these days. read more

After graduation, I still did not know where to go eat. My best friend suggested Maudie's over Santa Rita's. Her roommate is a native of Austin and raves about it. So a group of 6 of us came down here to eat dinner. Honestly, I had the beginnings of tonsillitis (though I did not know it at the time), so I cannot comment on the food for myself. However, everyone else seemed to like their dishes (they ate it all!), and everything looked delicious. The prices were pretty reasonable too. It ended up being under $45 for all 6 of us. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. There was a lady who refilled our chips and water who was kind of indifferent and weird. She asked if we wanted more chips, and my best friend said "no," yet she still brought some anyway and practically dumped them on the table. I guess I will have to come back to try the food another time. read more

My favorite Mexican food place in all of Austin! I have lived here for 6 years and haven't found any place I love more than Maudie's. I even had them cater my wedding recently and they went above and beyond what was in the contract and really helped out at the event. I'm partial to the fish tacos, veggie fajitas, cheese enchiladas (with queso instead of sauce), and bean tamales. Their salsa is very good. It's nice and smooth, not chunky, and has a slight smokey flavor. They also have a breakfast menu that is worth checking out. Great local restaurant, great local catering. Ummm...I go for Happy Hour. There is nothing better than Maudie's Happy Hour. If Maudie's folds due to Covid I will be tremendously sad. It's my favorite place in Austin. The service is Bar None. It's just a great place to go after work and to talk to a good friend. I love Tex-Mex, so I really wanted to like Maudie's since it's located very convenient to us, but it's definitely not going to be somewhere we go since Chuy's is relatively nearby. I like the ambiance here and parking isn't bad despite how busy the restaurant can get, and the wait to sit is reasonable, if not fast. But the food overall isn't great, it's just average across the board. That's not to say individual ingredients aren't fresh, but unlike better mexican and/or tex-mex, the overall flavor just isn't there. Beware: take out orders get screwed up here/delayed consistently. The food here is just decent -- at best -- but the pick-up food service is absolutely trash. I don't dine in here because the restaurant's proximity to my house made it a regular option for to-go orders. Not anymore. I've stopped giving this place business because there seems to be no concern for take out orders. They had me wait almost 45 minutes total for soup and two potato tacos on my last order. I called it in and waited 15 minutes to pick up. When I arrived the food wasn't ready. So I waited by the bar (in front of the bartender)-- for almost another half hour. The entire time nobody bothered to ask me why I was just standing around or if I needed help. The bartender could have cared less. And in that time, I watched several take out orders placed well after mine get fulfilled. My soup was sitting on the take out line for more than 20 minutes. Nobody bagged it. And my tacos never came out. I had to flag down a manager to get answers, and even then the response wasn't sufficient. I left with no dinner after calling in a really simple order. I have been a Maudies fan for 10+ years and like the menu and service that I usually get. This location though! Expect a side of ATTITUDE with your food and drinks. Went for Happy Hour, Texas Martini is a home run for $5! Ordered drinks and quseo, waitress had an attitude from the very first minute! Place was basically empty and I still couldn't get her attention for more drinks, luckily the manager saw me waving my arms at her. I swear she was ignoring me. Was busy socializing with all the other employees that came in for the night shift, they take over 2 or 3 tables and everyone starts hugging each other, it was just weird. I was worried about finding a good tex-mex place in Austin for my friends and I who are from Houston. Their quesadillas were SO GOOD. Actually some of the best I might have ever had. Found this place on Yelp and was extremely pleased! Without a doubt the most delicious Tex-Mex food I've ever had! Service was good and the food came out extremely fast (under 10 minutes). we ordered the Chile Con Queso to start off and it was amazing - warm and delicious, not too spicy. I ordered the "Grandpa's Special" which is 2 beef and bean burritos with chile con carne on top - also amazing. The rice and beans are the best I've ever had. I've been to all the Maudie's and this is a solid location. There is something about this spot that I don't love as much as the other locations, but hey, it's still the Maudie's I know and love. They have a small bar, small patio, and small interior. Hey, maybe that's why it feels different. It's just so small. But beside that, the food and the drinks are consistent. If you've read my other reviews, then you'd know I'm obsessed with the Chano Special. It's just so good. I can pass on the fajitas, because they're nothing special or interesting. It was okay. Nothing to write home about. I ordered the queso since people raved about it and it wasn't what others made it out to be. I had to pour salsa into it to give it some help. I ordered the cheese enchilada lunch plate, and the red sauce was heavily flavored with chili powder. Chili powder is kind of like cinnamon. There is a fine line between enough and too much. The prices were fair for the food, and it would be a cute happy hour spot. I just probably wouldn't eat. It is pretty close to the lake, but not right on the lake. I'm so sorry I haven't done this sooner. You are my Tex-Mex restaurant of choice! I love the salsa here, like no other in town and the prices are fantastic. The Skinny Sheryl enchiladas suit me to a "t" since they downplay the oil, leave off the cheese and serve it with grilled zucchini. You can have beans and rice on the side if you wish, or you can go low cal with this one. The margaritas are top notch and the bartenders are always friendly. They also make great iced tea (not as easy as you'd think) My only complaint is consistency of service. Sometimes its fantastic, sometimes not so much. And I can't even tell you the why or when, it seems random. At any rate, if you love chicken in your enchiladas, lots of real cheese (my husband loves their cheesy enchiladas) this is a great place. Really disappointing experience here today. I work for a delivery service and called in an order, explained to the person taking it that I couldn't understand her and repeated my order for clarity. Something was lost in translation because the restaurant had doubled part of my order. I was then told that I was lying and forced to pay for the extra food. It's been a while since I've eaten at Maudie's but was eager to go back after picking up food a few times. Not anymore....there is more than one customer at stake with takeout orders; I wonder if I'd been picking up food for myself if I would've been treated that way.
