I wish the bus came more than every hour and later in the evening but for what it is it's a good bus system. All of the drivers are awesome. They don't allow music or noise to be played (which I like), an actual peaceful bus ride. The only problem is there's at least one person on every bus trip who smells like they haven't showered in 20 years. read more

The first driver that picked me up at 11:45 on route 29 in Kahan was very polite and helpful. After that, every single driver was super rude to the point of being condescending. This is my main transport to the Azeka Plaza , # 10 bus. It runs hourly. It's been on time each direction. They have rules. The space inside is seating and standing. And wheel chairs. Up to 3 bikes can be put on a bracket set up in front of the driver. So there is no room for surfboards or skim or boogie boards. I would guess , no folding beach chairs. No mask, shirt or shoes. No ride. Correct amount for fare. No change. Have it ready on boarding. No luggage. I feel sorry for the airport run but I think that rule Leans more to the homeless. Many are down to the clothes on their back, a rolling bag and a backpack and maybe a yoga mat. That's all usually in a shopping cart. That situation is as common as Surfboards in pick ups. I find the bus to be clean and all the drivers uniformly courteous. If you are here long term or a local you can get a monthly bus pass that cuts daily use fee by a significant amount. Cash only and buy it from the driver after the 25 th off the month for use starting on the first. There is a notice inside the bus, pass holders board first to speed the boarding process. Therefore, it's direly imperative you copiously study via CAREFULLY READING THE SPECIFIED PICK-UP SCHEDULE TIMES for ALL MAUI'S BUS ROUTES succinctly because from my faux-pas experiences, I kept missing the bus by a couple of minutes to ten minutes! Frustratingly, I have discovered you MUST be present by NO less than FIVE TO TEN MINUTES PRIOR at any bus stop or you'll definitely miss riding the Maui Bus, i.e., for example: While waiting at the Polynesian Shores Bus Stop (the Maui Bus may pass by Polynesian Shores' Bus Stop anywhere from forty-five minutes before the hour to fifty-five minutes before the hour!), after attending Citizen Church's Sunday Service (I hobbled across Highway 30 in order, arriving at the Polynesian Shores Maui Bus Stop), the Maui Bus #28 heading towards Kapulua passed by at SEVEN MINUTES AFTER THE HOUR, two minutes later, these two ladies were hoofing towards the bus stop which is across from my bus stop location where I had to sadly inform them the Maui Bus left at 1:07 PM when the two ladies arrived at the bus stop at 1:10 PM! Meanwhile, on the flip side, I had to visit Minit Urgent Care across the way from Foodland and across the street from Safeway: The time was 4:45 PM upon arrival at the Safeway via Lahaina Cannery Shopping Center: however, I missed the Maui Bus #28 heading towards Kapulua by FIVE minutes; however, the Maui Bus left Lahaina Cannery at 4:40 PM!!!!! RATS!!!! Equating, AUGH~I had to wait a FULL HOUR in order, riding the Maui Bus returning via Napili heading towards Kapulua!!!! What to do in order, avoiding the sweltering heat wave? Buy a DAY PASS for $4.00, hop onto the Lahaina Bus #23 heading towards Lahaina's Wharf Cinema, buy a drink after exiting the bus, gulp the ice cold drink-FAST, and the Kapulua Bus #28 arrives at Wharf Cinema at 5:30 PM! While I understand not wanting to inconvenience locals, something of this smacks of a scam deal with the taxi companies. The good: It seems to be a clean and safe bus system on Maui. It has been punctual. The driver was professional. We used the service Monday afternoon September 6th and rode bus number 15. The bad: Only one payment option: $2 cash per person per trip, exact amount. No change given. No credit card etc options. The driver could not wait 5 minutes for me to run 200 ft to the nearby convenience store to get change. Even though it was a slow day and we were the only two passengers. We even got there just as the bus arrived at the stop, so the driver should have had plenty of time. It does make me wonder if the driver was hoping that I'd just give him a $20 bill and go with it. I am not ashamed to admit that I have used the Maui Bus in the past, once to be specific LOL.  Though I have my own vehicle, I was being "pake" (pronounced pah-kay) that day, which means cheap or frugal in Hawaii's Chinese-Hawaiian urban dictionary, as gas prices were high at the time.  The plan: Take the bus from Kahului to Lahaina and meet my spouse for dinner.  Ready, set, go! BRIEF HISTORY: What started out as a small, public-private operation in 2002 between the County of Maui and Akina Aloha Tours has grown exponentially ever since, now offering 13 routes with numerous stops, high ridership numbers, and currently operated jointly by the County and Roberts Hawaii.   EXPERIENCE: I parked my vehicle at Queen Kaahumanu Center which has long been a main hub for the Maui Bus (though that'll stop in 2020) and jumped on.  I think I paid $1 or something back in the day.  The bus was cool and clean, and I had my choice of seat.  We had just two stops along the way to Lahaina; on Wells Street in Wailuku and the Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea.  Nothing notable happened at the Wells Street stop but man, after stopping in Maalaea, it changed my mind forever about taking the Maui Bus!  On board came two tourists, dusty and sweaty like they were done hiking or horseback riding.  Naturally they sat right in front of me.  I have a nose like a dog, so everything was multiplied.  Dampness and sweaty heads filled my nostrils.  Lovely.  And only 30 more minutes to Lahaina.  Calgon, take me away!?  We finally arrived in Lahaina behind the Wharf Center.  I told myself I am NEVER taking the bus again, no matter how high gas prices go.  I met my spouse, had a nice dinner, and was relieved that I had a chauffeured ride back home!   BUS ROUTES: They're pretty extensive and stretches to areas beyond central Maui including Waihee, Kapalua in west Maui, Kihei in south Maui, Kula in upcountry Maui, and Haiku in east Maui.  Most routes run from 5:30am to 10:30pm. BUS STOPS: Look for the small Maui Bus signs, accompanied by donated chairs and benches, or a civilized pavilion with a roof, lighting and seats. It's so Maui!?   COST: Single rides are $2, daily passes $4, monthly rates are $45 (with lower rates for students, seniors, and those with disabilities). OVERALL: Convenient routes and stops that'll get you around most of Maui cheaply and quickly. read more

Yes, I am a fan of the bus. It helps me do my small part to help Hawai'i reach it's 2030 Renewable Goals by riding it 2x week into town from Kihei. Today, it happened to me - there was no room on the bike rack in front of the Kihei Islander bus when the bus stopped at South Kihei Road & Ke Ali'i Alanui. I have seen this happen before to another Kihei bike rider in the past. Disappointed, I rode my bike home drove my car into town instead. Kindly consider an expanded bicycle rack to a few buses that service the Kihei routes before the electric buses arrive. Hopefully, the electric buses will have ample room for bikes. Complete & total nightmare. I rarely handout 1 star reviews - but using this transportation system as a tourist is a complete and total nightmare. They are ill-equipped to handle large loads of people especially with dual cruise ships in port. The staff is rude, unprofessional and, not in the least, helpful. They don't keep track of how many tickets they sell and it is beyond ridiculous and completely unsurprising when a heated argument bordering on shoving match breaks out because they do not implement clear and defined instructions for line queuing and where to wait specifically for the appropriate bus. I will not bore you with the details; but in a nutshell, I ended up with a massive detour for something that should have taken me only a 1/2 hr each way from my origin point to my destination and back - ended up being a 2.5 hr gong show - just coming back. Also, their drivers are not the friendliest either, so if you want to experience the friendly island feeling. Taking the Maui Transit system is NOT the way to experience it. If there is a customer service complaint & resolution process evaluation component to the next time Maui decides to outsource to a 3rd party for their public transportation needs - their current contractor should be docked major points for their complete & utter mismanagement. In short - if you are a tourist to Maui - forget using their transit system and rent/hire a car, even if you are a cruise ship passenger, because you won't waste time waiting for a bus that would be willing to let you on or not having to worry about a brawl breaking out because transit company doesn't think to order enough buses, when a double ship load of day tourists unload to experience the delights of Maui. read more

Coming from Los Angeles and it's mediocre public transportation system I was appreciative of Maui Bus. I wish it was more extensive and the lines ran more frequently than once an hour, but the buses were on time, not too crowded, and not too expensive at $2 or a $4 day pass. The drivers I had were really tourist friendly. The Wailea line terminates right across the street from the Grand Wailea hotel, which was so convenient. Instead of paying a ton to rent a car, the bus was a convenient option! I took the bus to Kihei. (Though I later learned that some stores in Kihei will shuttle you out from your hotel for free to Kihei, like Hilo Hattie, this was still useful, and I got to meet some locals on the bus, too.) Then there is just the sheer novelty of riding a bus with seatbelts. read more

Frist the really good news Maui has bus system that is expanding offers 7 days a week service and reliable buses. Sadly many routes only run once and hour and some of the feeder routes are not synchronized well. Most of the drives are Great, but some have chips on there shoulders waiting for to break some unspoken run made up in there head. Then they try and be all nice to you when they let you off the bus. That said with the bus and my bike placed on a rack I have been able to explore lots of places on the island, I just wish there more routes and later routes on the weekend. read more

Shame on the (2:30pm out of Cinema Center) Lahaina Islander route driver who decided not to honor riders waiting in line and called all bus-pass carriers to board first. This left my 84 year old father in law standing all the way to Maalaea. Quoting to a woman waiting in line with 3 children. 'These are MY rules. When you're in my house, you follow my rules. When I'm in your house, I'll follow yours." Poor form, Roberts, your rude, dismissive, drivers need training, and you know you need more service to Lahaina. Rude drivers, who don't assist elderly passengers are bad for business! Get it together! The Maui bus transportation system is very easy to get by. People do complain about the bus being late, and it does get annoying, but I can understand why, because of traffic or accidents. One thing that I dont appreciate, is the attitude of some of the bus drivers. I can understand that they have a very difficult job of driving long distances everyday, but there is no reason to treat everyone indecently, especially people who are very new to Maui, the elderly, and mothers with their child who are very slow. I really love the Maui it's nice and clean and they have a new route called waihee villager route8 and it takes u all the to pablito senior park. And the kula islander been revised because it can take you to Salvation Army Walmart , pukalani and then to kula. And they should also have the Kahului 5 and 6 go to Kahului Airport zone 3 and haiku islander 35 go straight to Walmart because haiku islander always experience traffic coming and going. Busses are ALWAYS late, except when you travel before 9 in the morning. It is not exception that the bus is 20+ minutes late, and sometimes they do not show up at all! There are some busstops occupied by homeless folks, and they fight regularly. Sometimes, the bus just does not stop when you are standing at the busstop. Please, rent a car or go by bike/on foot. read more

Upon arrival at the Maui airport, my boyfriend and I had planned to take the bus to Lahiana, with a transfer at the Queen K center. We were shocked to be rudely thrown off the bus, being told that we couldn't carry our luggage onto the bus. This was surprising for two reasons 1) the bus stop was at an a airport and 2) we had two small bags each, which easily fit on the overhead bins of the airplane. Every other bus driver was absolutely fine, but our first encounter with the Maui Bus left a sour taste in our mouths. Enjoy Maui Bus, but beware the mean bus drivers. read more

If you're not looking to reserve a car, the Maui Bus is a pretty convenient way to get around the south and west sides of the island. During the few times we rode it, the bus was on time, the people were friendly and it only costs $1* per trip. The only potential downsides are that it doesn't run too late in the evening (depending upon the route, 8-9 pm) and you may have to switch buses frequently if you're going longer distances; the system is a collection of 12 bus routes that go limited miles. *Just like with mortgage documents, credit card applications, etc. there's a catch on the $1 fee. You pay a dollar every time you get on the bus. So if you're going a longer distance and have to do a transfer, it's an extra dollar. read more

We needed to get to Safeway for some shopping; and, the Kaanapali Trolley driver mentioned we could catch the bus at his next stop. He dropped us off at Whaler's Village; and, right on time, the Maui Bus showed up. I bought three round trip, thinking most of the routes had "reverse routes" but, when we arrived I reviewed the map and saw that wasn't true for this route. Nonetheless, at $2 one-way; and, $4 all-day, the Maui Bus is a bargain. The busses are clean, the drivers friendly and knowledgeable; and, they run on-time, as near as I could tell. We Ubered it back, since we didn't want to do the full 45-minute loop; but, honestly if it hadn't been for the groceries, it would have made for some nice sightseeing. read more

I use to ride the bus ALL the time. Hit or miss some days with the busses -- especially in Lahaina. They're crowded for sure. Especially with all the local commuters & the tourists. But usually the drive to a certain stop is quick in lahaina. A lot of the busses don't have AC & sometimes is unbearable. Not sure how drivers do it! The drivers are all nice. But seriously? They're not information centers you hold up everyone else time when you're ASKING a bazillion questions. Who cares which side of the bus has a better view? (yes I'm talking to you tourists!) & I've sat near the sign that states "disruption of a transit operator is a class C felony." oy ve. The Maui Bus Service is great!!! The bus routes goes everywhere that a "typical" resident or visitor needs to go. The bus schedule is 95%+ on time. You can also download their app to see the bus real-time location and when they will arrive to your stop. Most drivers are pretty nice. We were upset at one driver that gave us a hard time about bringing a small "two-piece" fishing pole onto the bus. She gave us a lecture about how the pole needed to be placed inside a container or properly covered?!? The pole was not set up and there was no loose hooks or anything exposed. It seems like most drivers don't have patience for non-locals and visitors from the mainland. The price of the bus ride is pretty cheap, too. $2/one way or $4 for an all-day pass. read more

Most of the drivers, cleaners and other workers are nice or neutral. There are bad apples though. The older ones honk at cyclists who don't push the bike rack up fast enough, and scold cyclists who do it "too early." They'd be better served not keeping such miserable people on staff. read more

Mm..mixed experiences here. Namely 2 buses ;) The first time the driver was great - I'd just arrived in Maui and thought there was a shuttle you could get from the airport, but apparently there isn't. The bus driver of the bus I caught showed me exactly where to get off, which next bus to take, and allowed me on with all my suitcases ;) The next bus driver dropped me off rightt in front of the banana bungalow hostel, and a guy on the bus struck up a conversation as a native Mauian with some advice for my vacation :) On the way back though..I was really struggling with my suitcases and no one would help me, the bus driver made me throw away my Starbucks cup of water lest I spill any on the precious bus, and didn't give clear directions (of course, I looked everything up anyway beforehand). The next bus was late too, and the announcements..well, we all know how the Hawaiian alphabet only has 13 letters so it's a huge struggle to remember a single word, but with the blurred out announcements I feel like even the native Hawaiians would be struggling to tell the difference between Kahului and Kamehameha. The french couple next to me looked to me for advice, but I really had nothing. Best thing to do here would be to just go by the time table and get out when the time comes - and hope your bus isn't running late! read more

Honestly, I was totally in shock how good the Maui bus system was on my last visit to Maui. We didn't end up getting a rental car, but the Maui bus worked well for us getting around West Maui. The buses from Lahaina to Kaanapali don't run too often, but the route is excellent- stopping off at Cannery Mall - on the way to and from Whaler's Beach. Arctic air conditioning and fairly courteous drivers save from one really rude guy in Kahului. Our last trip on the way to the airport from Queen K centre- our bus was 40 minutes late :-( Apparently, an accident kept the bus stuck on the highway - another bus picked us up and got us to the airport on time. The schedules are posted in many places, and easy to understand. I downloaded a pdf onto my phone to have handy for checking times during my trip. We also took transit from Lahaina to Kahului for $2 each ~ unbeatable value, esp compared to airport shuttle buses. And, got a day pass each for $4 to go to Paia, easily and so cheaply. We love the Maui Bus system and use it every time we visit (twice a year). Rental cars are so expensive and this is a great alternative. However, on the 1st of August and the 2nd of December, our driver was sold out of the senior monthly passes. His suggestion was to catch the next driver. Someone certainly could police this situation better and make more effort to assist your patrons. The driver today said he sold out yesterday. Why can they not resupply at least at the end of each shift. read more

These guys drive like idiots! From cutting cars off to blocking the entire lane in front of bus stops, I'm surprised there aren't more accidents involving them. I've seen some of these dummies making illegal u-turns in the Millyard to running stop signs on waiale road and other areas and blocking the lanes instead of pulling to the side, forcing people to pass them illegally. Not to mention speeding on the highways and surface streets. They need to be put on notice to the Federal D.O.T. with all the violations they commit daily! And complaining to their bosses is no use, as they seem oblivious to trying to correct the problems. The county needs to change bus companies, as Roberts Hawaii has some of the worst drivers! I ride the Maui Bus every day! Its great! There are rules though and need to be followed. No food or liquid allowed. Exact change only. Monthly passes get on first. If you have a lot of 'stuff' take Uber. You can buy monthly passes on the bus or at their offices - one is in the Wharf Cinema Center! I have my own vehicle, but I am finding I am using the bus more often. I like to use it for point to point bicycle rides. When I am on bicycle I do show up early so I can get one of the two bike rack spots. In general the bus is on time and allows for easy transfers. $2 for a ride/$4 day pass is a deal. read more

Bus driver was beyond rude when we asked if the bus goes towards our hotel. Couldn't believe his attitude so we decided to use uber which costs more but the driver was at least not a total jerk. Won't use the public bus again although it would have been nice to save the money. We spend a lot of money getting to Maui when we come and saving 10$ isn't worth the experience. We arrived in Napoli on Saturday feb 23 for a 2 week stay. We have used the bus system in Maui previously. We got on the bus on Monday feb 25 and bought a senior month pass for 25 dollars each (2). We took that bus to Whalers Village, had dinner and waited for the return bus. Much to our surprise the driver would not honor our passes. He said they didn't go into effect until March 1...but the first bus driver never mentioned that and we rode the bus on our purchased pass. We had to pay another bus fare. He was extremely rude and wouldn't give his name. I called and was told to call back in the morning and speak with Danielle. My husband called and she was also extremely unhelpful and rude. The customer service at this business is non-existent. We have now spent $50 plus other fares on a monthly pass that we can only use for a week.
