After driving to our two big corporate box store nurseries, unable to procure a pretty common product, or any kind of customer service regarding availability, ordering, or the like, I felt pretty disillusioned, and more than frustrated. Pulling out my trusty Yelp app, I was able to locate Ohana Greenhouse and Garden Supply within several miles of my then-current location. Tucked into a long strip of warehouse's in Kahului's industrial area, behind a local fish market, I found a helpful worker who immediately offered me the assistance I was looking for and that is severely lacking elsewhere. Not only did they have the product I was looking for, but a quick look revealed a very nice assortment of amendments, potting supplies, and other items for the back yard horticulturist. I almost don't want to give away this secret reveal and keep it to myself, but they definitely deserve a shout out and two big (green) thumbs up!

If you own a landscaping company, this is a supplier that you probably need. They have on hand, or…read morecan order, more things than the usual home improvement centers carry. Although they cater to professional landscapers, they seem to tolerate us small fry who just own and try to keep their home looking nice. A while back, my hibiscus hedge was dying. Not all at once, though. The grim reaper started at the end and was marching down the line of plants. Long story short, the UH extension service concluded that a particular fungus was probably in the soil and working its was through my hedge. There were only 2 fungicides that could eliminate this threat and Simplot should have them. Another long story short, neither was in stock, but one could be shipped from the big island. It took over 3 weeks to get it shipped because it had to be included in a hazardous material container, although a hazardous container is sent every week. I did wind up with a lifetime supply of this chemical for the price of $75. It seemed pretty steep at the time, not knowing if it would work, but it did solve the fungus problem and the rest of my hedge lives on. Hooray! Anyway, Simplot couldn't help me on this visit. My yard guy wanted me to pick up fertilizer for my yard. He was very specific that it had to have a 10-30-10 ratio and slow release, so it wouldn't burn the grass. Simplot would surely have it on hand. Nope. Their only slow release had a 24-4-9 ratio and it came in a 50 lb bag. I only wanted 20 pounds. I wouldn't mind storing the excess, but fertilizer tends to turn sticky or hardens up over time. Besides, it's not close to the ratio I was looking for. My yard guy may have been confused. And, yes, this was only my 2nd visit to Simplot. A do enjoy walking around the home improvement stores, reading labels and comparing items. Simplot has a big warehouse, but there isn't much browsing. You talk to a guy at the front desk and he tries to meet your needs. That type of problem solving would be more satisfying if the guy seemed a bit more friendly and then I would return more often. When you arrive to the store they tell you, "oh I don't know, the manager sells it, I don't know what time the manager arrives, he sells a little bit at a time." If that's the case, why does this store advertise on the website "available to purchase in store" if they're going to discriminate and decide who they want to sell to?
