While I hate dinging a local company I also need to be truthful. The work that was done by Geoff was good, but the charges that Jonathan gave on the invoice were eyewatering!!!! I'm a property manager, I use repairman and contractors all the time and this is the most inflated bill I have encountered. For 2 wooden door shims installed, and the tiling I asked for wasn't possible to do, I paid nearly $900!!!! $135 per hour and 5 hours time, when Geoff the handyman was in and out under an hour, was driving 1 hour each way which means I was charged 2 hours for a Home Depot run. I contacted Jonathan to complain about the time he had charged but he was rude and kept texting me to the point I refused to answer him anymore as he was starting to harass me. His reply to me below is the tone to expect. I am Yelp Elite. I don't write a bad review just to annoy a local business. I write truthful reviews, I wouldn't be Elite if I didn't. I requested help with a new roof on my patio. Instead of replacing the cheap tarp that was put on, Michael suggested the plastic roofing in the color Gray. No Jonathan, we did not give you the wrong address. Your worker just did not note it down or something. He worked 4. 1/2 hours on 2 minor shelves, yes you gave three hourly rate but one could only expect 2 hours n your minimum. Yes I am a witness to the hours worked, and the work done. He did not do the shelf as we discussed, at all and it will need a redo. Again, I was clear. I left for awhile and Vicki did not observe the silly job he did, until I came home. Again, it was a 4 ft x 18" piece of plywood and 2 metal brackets. You ask for a credit card before even showing up. Vicki tried to negotiate with you but you charged the $606. without her permission. That invoice shown is all we were given: no breakdown, nor hours. I checked on line under your business name and you are NOT in good standing. z as it is there on the State BREG, site and under GET taxes and complaints. I have a copy of the report, for the court. This means that you are collecting GET and not paying them. Not good standing could also mean complaints. WE PAID FOR THE FULL REPORT. Since you choose to argue the matter here, we will take this to small claims, and let a judge decide. We are filing a complaint with the state of Hawaii. You are not a licensed contractor. My partner had contacted Maui Handyman LLC listed here: She told them she needed 2 shelves put up: it was one in each closet: One of his ( the owner's) workers got here and I asked how much per hour. He said 95$. I have been here 20 years and never heard of anything like that. He statutes he works really fast, so we both assumed an hour or 1 1/2 hours. He did drive to Ace to get what was a small piece of wood, and 2 of those regular white braces. He got here at 9:20 am. He was only gone less than 1/2 hour. He took about 1/2 bringing in a huge table saw, and setting up. This would normally take their own time, and require a skill saw, a drill, tape measure and a square. I have pictures of what little was done. I walked down to the beach for a couple of hours, and came back and gus worker was just finishing up at 2:00. that is 4 1/2 hours, to put in 2 minor shelves. Then he proceeds to charge us for 6 hours, and gave an invoice without the hours and total amount due. We are 2 senior women, but my partner paid him $606. She said she objected, but that's what the owner wanted, and his worker inflated the hours to him and told him 6. I had just walked in the door at 2:00. What do you do when you have no time to do an outdoor project nor the tools to do it? After you're done panicking, call the Maui Handyman like I did. Actually I emailed him through Yelp. He replied quickly, gave me a quote after I described the area I needed help with, and actually offered me a couple different times to come down and complete our landscaping. So what i had in mind was to have Jonathon build me a simple awning to protect my washer/dryer and water heater from the torentous elements of Kahului. After much discussion and advice, he has definitely surpassed my expections. He went on to even have the same matching bottom as the main cottage (not sure what you call it) so it kinda flows together as one piece as though it was original. But great job. I'll start this by saying I'd give this business 3 1/2 stars. They are punctual, communicative, pleasant, and hard-working. My only issue was project mgmt and billing. GET A WRITTEN TIME AND PRICE QUOTE AHEAD OF TIME. I recently moved to the north shore of Maui and needed some repairs to the rental I'm staying in. Searched Yelp and found Jonathan and his team at Maui Handyman and called after reading the wonderful reviews. The woman I spoke to was great, scheduled me for a pre-job free consult 2 weeks out, and said a quote would be provided afterward which I could decide to/to not move on. The day before my appt, Jonathan called to confirm, said they'd plan to just get started the next day, that he'd send 2 guys to cover the job to ensure all items on my list were done quickly and efficiently, affirmed the hourly price, and said he didn't think it would take too long to handle all especially with two ppl. GREAT!! I was eager to start anyway. I met Trucker, Joe, and Jonathan the next day - all on time, pleasant, and ready to go - and we walked through the house ID'ing what could/couldn't be done and made a plan. By the end of Day 2, a couple more things had fallen off the list due to supply shortage and an unavoidable change on my side (new homeowner announced by prop mgr at the top of Day 2 needed to be consulted on one item), a lot of time was allocated to smaller projects and none to the larger ones (which info I texted to Jonathan at day's end) and I ended up with a $3,500 bill a couple days later. I called Jonathan to discuss as this was a lot more than I'd planned and the job wasn't complete. He said I understood their billing and that the time had been spent, I could hire them to come out again a few days later to do the other stuff but that it would probably be best if I hired someone less expensive for that, and acknowledged he understood if I didn't want to work with them again in light of the results. We communicated a few more times over the next month and I told him I felt taken advantage of bc there had been no prior quote and little supervision to ensure the job was done completely and timely as promised. Jonathan ultimately adjusted my final bill to what I'd originally planned to spend for the entire project so I am very grateful to him for that - Thank you, Jonathan. I do still need to hire someone for the remaining matters so there's that. Tbh I'd hire them again if my initial trust hadn't been so shaken bc I really liked them. Had them try to install an air conditioner, what a mistake that was! First of all they tried to overcharge me, quoted me 2-3 hours @$95/hr. and for sure no more than 4 hours. 4 hours at $95/hr. is $380 before taxes. Got the invoice and it was for 6.75 hours! which is $641.25 before taxes. After a bunch of hassle, I paid them $475 before taxes but one should not have to go through the trouble of arguing over an invoice that was essentially agreed on. They said if it was going to be more they would call to discuss but I never received a call. I that wasn't bad enough, I got a call from a guest telling me the air conditioner was falling out! Come to find out the unit was just sitting on the cement curb below it and it was NOT MOUNTED TO ANYTHING! So I'm really not sure what took so long. Then as the air conditioner slid out of the opening the front tilted up and broke the bottom jalousie window and bent the screen frame. Called Jonathan and told him about the problem, and he first tried to blame it on guests then when he seen pictures he said he had a handyman in the area he would send over to at least prop the unit up from the outside with some 2X4"s.
