The doctor at this facility, Erwin Danzer does not know what he's doing. I'm a chronic pain patient and he would rather give me narcotics then give me Lidoderm Patches. I've been a chronic back patient for 20 years and he argued with me about the number of patches that I can use and refuse to let me have more than one a day because he said it was at risk of a heart attack. It literally says on the box that you can have three a day. On my way home, the doctors office called me and told me that he had discovered that he could give me three today so he was gonna call in my prescription for me. On another visit without any prior notice, I was told that I had to take a drug test, I was charged for that and he's the one giving me the medication. I have no history of missus however they just threw this bill on me. I live a long ways away and I need my medication. What was I going to do? I had to agree to the urine test even though I have no prior history of miss of using drugs. After we found out that I had a torn rotator cup, and that I needed to have a major surgery on my shoulder and that I would be out for a very long time. I called the doctors office and asked them to call in a sling for me so that I could pick it up from the pharmacy. They called me back and told me that this doctor told me to go on Amazon to order one from Amazon. Like what the... I have medical insurance. After I found out that I needed surgery, I called an excellent podiatry surgeon that I had known from previously and asked for his recommendation. During my doctors appointment at the Pain clinic, he was getting ready to tell me who the doctor was and they said hold on one second let me check my messages because they left me a voicemail.... The message was 28 seconds. When the message finish, he scolded me and told me never to do that again that I was wasting his valuable time. That he had other patients who needed him, however, at the time there were no other patients in the clinic or in the waiting room.. 28 seconds folks! Oh, and then my favorite, which is the very last visit ... he's the one who's prescribing all my medication and there's a lot and so they come in and they're asking me how I'm doing and asking me about my medication and my dosage and I said I don't have my medication with me... I said you prescribed all the medication so whatever you have there in your tablet is exactly what I'm taking... he then responded to me that he didn't have access to that information and that he expected that every time I come into the doctors appointment that I need to have a list of my medications I need to know the dosage of every single one.... Even though he's the one prescribing it. I'm telling you, this guy is not a real doctor in my opinion he's a fancy drug dealer. He was offended when I wanted the surgeon to recommend my post surgery medication.... He wanted to give me Percocet, the surgeon gave me oxy.... Percocet is more addictive than oxy! And my very last and most favorite experience were the number of phone calls that I received from Walgreens... informing me over and over and over again that they would not work with this doctor and that they would not be filling any more in narcotic medication for me if he was my doctor. They said, and I quote he never returns our phone calls! There is a different pain clinic, I don't know which one it is, but I know that people have told me that they are very professional. I don't think I need to say anymore, I'm so exhausted from trying to just get adequate medical help from this clinic. I'm 56 years old. I have four different disabilities and I have two people in my family who are doctors and never have I been treated this way by a doctor. I don't know who gave him his license or who let him graduate, but this is a mess over there. By the way, they're not gonna take your medical insurance, they're gonna say they don't need it .. later you're gonna find out that somebody else is billing you but because they never took down your insurance information and they didn't relay it to the company who's doing the billing you will receive a bill that has not had the insurance deducted. read more

I started going to the pain clinic 4 months ago, the first two visits where with Erwin Dancer and the next two visits where with Stacy Gregory. Both good human beings but they both need to stop treating patients as addicts, there are lots of us that really need pain medication and they seems to define their jobs as controlling how much meds they prescribe rather than the patients needs. Six months ago I made the unfortunate mistake of going to see Dr. James Van Nata for a lumbar ablation. Because I'd had this treatment done in Honolulu 6 times with great results and zero complications, I went to the Maui Pain Clinic without doing my due diligence (researching the Drs reputation) While Dr Van Nata might be one of the least personable people, I was there for his skill set & medical acumen. When I tried to get off the table after the 1/2 hour procedure, I collapsed and was caught by a nurse before I hit the floor. Apparentl, even though he had perfect pictures to guide him. He hit a nerve. I was there for an hour trying to recover and finally decided to get a wheelchair and get out of there. Stop. Don't go here; go to a Orthopedic Surgeon or Neurosurgeon. This so called 'pain clinic' only ignores your communication and creates more complicated pain. Go to a real doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating pain. This clinic only channeled me into expensive shot after shot, in the wrong joint because they failed to diagnosis properly. You'll only get muscle relaxers and anti depression meds. Or worse, they force you onto Gabapentin so you will be a non thinking zombie and can't see the harm they are doing. read more

The pain clinic had a great doctor, Smith. He explained everything about my pain level and how important exercise and staying in motion is for me. But they fired him and now we have Danzer. He is not knowledgeable, and never offers anything to help. He is condescending and rude. He will walk out of the room while I am in mid sentence asking a question. Then he doesn't come back. He has no knowledge of what he is doing. Pain clinic should get an actual doctor, or at least go back to having someone that can talk to you like a human. read more

I have just paid off my bill for Maui Pain Clinic...and I feel nothing but gratitude. From the first appointment, Melissa at the front desk knew me on a first name basis and welcomed me with a smile everyday. I felt taken care of and like I was an important client to this clinic. AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! Google his name and you will see all of the negative reviews. I saw Dr. Van Natta for a neck cortisone epidural. What I found very strange was Dr. Van Natta had no mask on from greeting me, during the procedure room or after. All of his staff had masks on. Mind you this appointment was when Maui was hitting record numbers over 100 daily in the midst of Delta (August 26,2021). Later that day my neck started to ache so I called the office to ask if I could ice it and take ibuprofen. As a side note I also said to the receptionist at the end of the conversion, "By the way I was wondering why the Dr. wasn't wearing a mask, I don't want come across accusatory but I was curious as to why? Was it so his glasses don't fog or so he can see the XRAY better when guiding the needle?" I made it very clear I was just asking not accusing, I wanted reassurance to why he wasn't. She was very understanding and said she would relay the message. A week later I got a call from his office saying Dr. Van Natta refuses to see you as a patient that asking about why he wasn't wearing a mask is the reason. You could hear in the receptionist's voice how sorry she was and that she empathized with how unethical this is. I felt personally hit by this, pain management is a series of appointments and a last resort option when everything else has failed. It's also trial and error building on the previous appointment. I had been dealing with neck pain for 6 months and hoping they would be part of the solution to this long ordeal. Instead he dropped me just for asking about why he wasn't wearing a mask. My neck felt pretty much the same as it did before the injections this makes me question if he even did the procedure right. His total lack of professionalism and breaching Health care worker protocol with no mask then releasing me when I just asked why he didn't wear a mask shows a lack of caring for his patients, the healthcare system and covid. I have also reported this to my primary DR. as well as other doctors who are personal friends of mine here on Maui, all of whom will no longer be referring him. read more

Dr Danzer is the ONLY physician. There's a reason for everyone leaving!! HORRIBLE PHYSICIAN! Bedside manners? NONE. Doesn't care that your in pain. Kept putting me on mutilple muscle relaxers and when I finally told him (after 6 different muscle relaxers) that the side effects are terrible and making me so much worse, he got even a worse attitude and told me to find a different doctor. MY PLEASURE!!! Having 4 herniated discs and nerve damage he should be understanding and sympathetic to at least a degree. I feel sorry for some of staff. I recommend every person do their research and talk with other people that have had injections because Kaloko pain clinic is a junk operation. However, the front office staff are great people and the clinic is lucky to have hard working professionals to make up for the negatives and unprofessional behavior of the nurse practitioner and doctor. The Nurse Practitioner does not focus on your treatment or taking the time to learn about the issues that brings you to them. Rather the impression is how fast they can get you in and out to charge your insurance. Arrived for procedure and it was obvious the doctor had not reviewed my file and unfamiliar with my diagnosis, which highlights the nurse does not talk with the doctor as the doctor didn't even know if his nurse was on duty that day. After the procedure, under the pain contract, medications agreed upon and promised would be ready. Rather medication was not prescribed until two days later and I was forced to be in pain because their contract doesn't allow you to see another doctor even in the ER for the same condition. A little research on my part would have prevented this experience as I later learned from a surgeon and a professional pain clinic that pain injections are a "shotgun" approach to dealing with pain. This is not a solution rather a mask that covers up the real problem just like pain medication. I recommend people look for alternatives and if going for shots find another clinic as this one is on lower end. I have gone to Maui Pain Clinic in the past. I've had several steroid injections for chronic pain in my back. None of them ever worked. I found the nurse practitioner quite friendly & knowledgable but two things about the office bothered me enough to change clinics (I now go to Hawaii Institute of Pain in Wailuku - pleasant, clean wait area, friendly staff, excellent nurse practitioners, and Dr. Garcia is the only doctor I've ever had who gave me some relief with his steroid injections!) Here are my two concerns with Maui Pain Clinic: 1) the wait area is the scuzziest wait area of any doctor office I've ever been in. 2) prior to the doctor administering the steroid injection, instead of referring to my file, he simply asked "where does it hurt"? Somehow that didn't make me feel very confident. Then, no surprise, the injection did nothing for my pain!!! They say that a good part of pain relief is psychological as well as physiological and I was certainly prepared for the injection to fail!! My advice: try Hawaii Institute of Pain read more

Dr. Van Hatta (owner) was a former provider of mine in 2016. I left his clinic after his p.a. "shannon" halfed my post spine surgery medication and did not tell me beforehand. I expect my provider to be HONEST & to share the TREATMENT PLAN with me HONESTLY. I yelped shannon in 2016. Now van hatta, one of only four drs who take my insurance and does pain management on maui, is refusing to treat me in 2022 because of that review. I'm a paralegal for 20+ years and van hatta& his staff CLEARLY accept and DENY people based on IMPLICIT BIASES& PERSONAL PREFERENCE & NOT MEDICAL QUALIFICATIONS nor NECESSITY OF PROVIDING MEDICAL CARE TO THIS COMMUNITY IN MAUI NEI. A'ole! why is he afraid of a 6 yr old yelp review about a provider who hasn't been there in years? No these drs are discminating against people 40% of the time according to a recent Harvard law review article about pain management doctors & medical discrimination. Dr. Van Hatta is CLEARLY unable to put his oath to give medical service to this HAWAIIAN WOMAN FIRST, without personal judgment and BEFORE EGO. patients need to arm themselves with info because this type of discrimination is leading to a major amount of APPROPRIATE & QUALIFIED pain patients NOT RECEIVING PALLIATIVE & NECESSARY CARE because doctors feel they can CHERRYPICK CLIENTS. I was with Maui Pain Clinic over a course of some time. Only because my insurance said I was already there I had to stay. I will never go back. The doctors there are rude and don't know how to do their jobs. I had to tell the doctor what to write in her report because for some reason she couldn't understand at thing I answered to her questions. The front desk woman, Melissa is very rude and loud. She has no sense of privacy for any patients as she will discuss anything very loud without a care for anyone's personal information. She tries to be involved with everything in the office even if it has nothing to do with her. Always trying to micromanage things she plays no part in. On many occasions she moved my appointment without notice and I spent so much wasted time in the waiting room that was always full. It wouldn't be until the worker's compensation gal Jackie would come and start calling patients in that things would begin to get under control. I would not recommend this office at all. i would have given this a 0 star. this clinic is horrible. most unprofessional place EVER. melissa, the front desk person, can be heard talking stink about patients. she thinks shes whispering but not. the doctor who does the steroid injection doesnt ever look into your file, doesnt spend time to talk to you. i swear, he only sees you for a second and then hes gone. the nurses are okay but everythibg feels rushed. there was no sense of personal interest. i would def go somewhere else like the hospital or dr.garcia. read more
